People always had a pattern of getting nicer cymbals later on if they ever decide to budget, so I think it's always best to invest a really nice ride and crash before even sniffing into other cymbal type territory - especially bc you can always sell 2 HHXs but not so much an 8 pack of Meinl HCS of the same total price.

I find good (expensive) cymbals are more important than a cheap drum set. The drum set can sound great with new heads, cheap cymbals like sabian b8 sound cheap but also don't last as long as my high quality cymbals, some are about 20 years old and are in great shape, no cracks, dents, or keyhole. But first at most is a good set of hi-hats and a good ride cymbal, as you will be playing those two the most.

While I understand the sentiment I guess I’m an asshole because there’s no way I’m playing B8’s when my ears are use to my beautiful sounding K customs. You can make shitty drums sound better but you can’t make shitty cymbals sound like K’s, you just can’t. I can take a shit drum kit, recut the edges, finish the interiors to make crappy soft wood harder (harder woods project more), replace the stock heads with remo’s etc… but you can’t make shit cymbals sound better you just can’t…

I buy most of my cymbals used. Even then most of them are mid-range cymbals too. I think the only "premium" cymbal I've ever owned was a Zildjian Oriental China I got for cheap for a car boot sale. But that broke years ago.

I think if your cymbals sound like a bunch of clanking metal, the sound engineer will probably just turn them down. That’s not the worst thing in the world, but you will be able to contribute less to the performance. It’s really like most things for us instrumentalists: most people won’t be able to place their finger on when you’re doing something right or wrong, but all the little things combined does affect their experience.

Wuhan cymbals make great cymbals for not a lot of money. Both of my splashes, and a fx crash are made by Wuhan and I’ve made money recording for people with those.

This is truth, bro. I picked up a sabian b8 set for 3 bills for jamming with and recording with a buddy.

You are absolutely 100 percent correct. Just play the drums. Never been explained any better than this.

Not a pro here , I think you should upgrade if you still have these stock brass cymbal come with cheap drum . Cymbals can’t be tone therefore pick one that you like :) sadly my ear really like b20 ….. haha

As for me, hihat is most usable cymbal in universe and it can fix whole picture of drumming. For example pst3 set with pst7hats are better than complete pst3 set, in my opinion
