    The main takeaway from this is that you should drink alcohol in the morning before work, not in the evening after.

    I trust his expertise, but in his book Why We Sleep he mentioned a lot of experimental studies without giving proper citations in the majority of cases. • @shad2617
      @shad2617 4 года назад +8

      The man literally cites his own book, as a source when writing academic papers. As you said, many of the claims on the book are based on zero evidence. I don't trust him at all, neither should anyone else.

    • @Lumpiluk
      @Lumpiluk 4 года назад

      @@shad2617 As far as I remember, there were at least some references for key arguments in the alcohol and caffeine chapters. Other times he only mentions work of colleagues (in the style of "Researchers at the University of X did the following") or even his own group's experiments without citation. I assume these works exist and maybe there was an unfortunate decision not to make the physical book appear too long with many pages of references?

In particular our sleep expert here ignores studies showing results suggesting more alertness with 5 hours of sleep and he does some self- supporting cropping of graphs.

    He’s completely right though, both affect my sleep a lot, especially caffeine. I don’t drink coffee in the afternoon because of this.
    I can also feel that alcohol affects my quality of sleep. Sound advice by the science guy. You don’t need to live by it, but it’s good to keep in mind if you’re struggling with sleep.

    The more I learn about my brain, the more convinced I am of it being a borderline useless clusterf**k of a thing, when it comes to trying to live a quality life in the modern world of today.

    • @matthewsamboy4377

      I read that your brain isn't wired to benefit you, but to strengthen your D.N.A. for future generations. But I don't know much about that. I drive a forklift for a living and have no children. If humans only use 10% of their brains, that supports the idea of your brain not being to your benefit, but for the evolution of D.N.A.

      matthew samboy Your brain doesn’t function on only 10%. It’s a myth I commonly hear but it’s not true at all. Evolution keeps testing limits and would defo not make a glucose slurping organ (your brain uses A LOT of sugars) to only use it at 10% capacity all day. Your brain cannot ‘strenghten’ your DNA either. Your DNA is a fixed thing. You got half from mum, half from dad and a little mitochondrial DNA from your mother and you gotta survive with that. Your brain is wired though to survive and reproduce and organisms with better DNA have a better chance of surviving and reproducing, hence passing these more favorable genes on. That’s what we call evolution :)

    Using half-life as a method for working out the psychoactive duration of a drug is extremely oversimplistic. You can't just take the half life of a substance to work out how a substance will affect you at a certain time after ingestion. This is because there are temporary tolerances based on receptor saturation that majorly alter the amount of a substance that can be actually used by the brain. Caffeine lasts signigicantly shorter than what the half-life would suggest.

      Good question. Tea has theanine which blunts the effects of caffeine. So when westerners talk about caffeine they are referring to coffee. Natural tea can vary so much I think it's hard to make generalizations. I bet most lab studies are done using caffeine tablets which is not the same thing as tea. Anyhow, if you have trouble with sleep experiment.
