I can definitely believe alcohol is bad for sleep. I have a few drinks every Friday to celebrate the end of the week, and it's definitely my worst sleep of the week. I fall asleep quickly, but I often wake up extremely early, and then can't fall back to sleep because my brain is too alert.
I stop caffein for 2 weeks and the result is amazing and outstanding I feel less nervous feel more satisfied and comfortable and my sleep is on time too ! Caffein is bad as alcohol
Kind of a coincidence that I saw this. I quit caffeine about three weeks ago after a cup of Starbucks Nitro basically induced a panic attack. The first week without caffeine was ROUGH but once I made it over the hill I noticed I sleep way better, wake up feeling refreshed, no more "micro" headaches in the afternoon, and my energy levels are far more steady.

Even as I have some resistance to the facts, the mature part of me is accepting responsibility for my health and wellness, committing to live the remainder of my days without abusing myself. The man literally cites his own book, as a source when writing academic papers. As you said, many of the claims on the book are based on zero evidence. I don't trust him at all, neither should anyone else.

Other times he only mentions work of colleagues (in the style of "Researchers at the University of X did the following") or even his own group's experiments without citation. I assume these works exist and maybe there was an unfortunate decision not to make the physical book appear too long with many pages of references?

It is basically a critique of the modern science quest for citation prominence and the effect on scientific research. In particular our sleep expert here ignores studies showing results suggesting more alertness with 5 hours of sleep and he does some self- supporting cropping of graphs.
I think it's a pretty proven fact that caffeine has a half life of 5-6 hours. I think he's talking more about excess, like people who drink 3 or more cups of coffee a day and a bottle of wine in the evening!
I’m watching this as I am laying in bed with a slight buzz on a Tuesday evening. He’s completely right though, both affect my sleep a lot, especially caffeine. I don’t drink coffee in the afternoon because of this. I can also feel that alcohol affects my quality of sleep. Sound advice by the science guy. You don’t need to live by it, but it’s good to keep in mind if you’re struggling with sleep. I sometimes have bad sleep phases and will cut out exactly those two substances.

I feel this so much! I never drink coffee, and the last time I did because a colleague invited me, I just couldn't fall asleep! I drank that cappuccino at 4pm and I think I fell asleep at 4:30am 🤦🏻♀️ My heart was beating so fast and I just couldn't stop my brain from thinking

I read that your brain isn't wired to benefit you, but to strengthen your D.N.A. for future generations. But I don't know much about that. I drive a forklift for a living and have no children. If humans only use 10% of their brains, that supports the idea of your brain not being to your benefit, but for the evolution of D.N.A.

Evolution keeps testing limits and would defo not make a glucose slurping organ (your brain uses A LOT of sugars) to only use it at 10% capacity all day. Your brain cannot ‘strenghten’ your DNA either. Your DNA is a fixed thing. You got half from mum, half from dad and a little mitochondrial DNA from your mother and you gotta survive with that. Your brain is wired though to survive and reproduce and organisms with better DNA have a better chance of surviving and reproducing, hence passing these more favorable genes on. That’s what we call evolution :)

Using half-life as a method for working out the psychoactive duration of a drug is extremely oversimplistic. You can't just take the half life of a substance to work out how a substance will affect you at a certain time after ingestion. This is because there are temporary tolerances based on receptor saturation that majorly alter the amount of a substance that can be actually used by the brain. Caffeine lasts signigicantly shorter than what the half-life would suggest.

Good question. Tea has theanine which blunts the effects of caffeine. So when westerners talk about caffeine they are referring to coffee. Natural tea can vary so much I think it's hard to make generalizations. I bet most lab studies are done using caffeine tablets which is not the same thing as tea. Anyhow, if you have trouble with sleep experiment.
No because it has less caffeine and it has the amino acid L-Theanine to balance out the stimulating affects of the caffeine. If you went overboard on it I’m sure it could affect your sleep
I used to drink between 2 and 4 energy drinks a day for 8 years. Quit cold turkey a few months ago, and after the first 5 days, my quality of life has drastically improved. I sleep better, I feel better, and I’m happier. I still crave those things though.

Perdust Dude lol. Matcha is/has caffeine. So does Yerba mate, & black tea.
Good question. Tea has theanine which blunts the effects of caffeine. So when westerners talk about caffeine they are referring to coffee. Natural tea can vary so much I think it's hard to make generalizations. I bet most lab studies are done using caffeine tablets which is not the same thing as tea. Anyhow, if you have trouble with sleep experiment.
No because it has less caffeine and it has the amino acid L-Theanine to balance out the stimulating affects of the caffeine. If you went overboard on it I’m sure it could affect your sleep

I used to drink between 2 and 4 energy drinks a day for 8 years. Quit cold turkey a few months ago, and after the first 5 days, my quality of life has drastically improved. I sleep better, I feel better, and I’m happier. I still crave those things though.
Best way to watch this vid is while enjoying an Iced Irish Coffee before you go to bed.
I love coffee but I had to quit drinking it. Messed up my sleep really bad. I feel a lot better now.
