The Effects of the German "Sturm und Drang" Period on French-American Composer Joseph Bologne

  • "Sturm and Drang" (Storm and Stress) is a proto-Romantic movement in German literature and music that occurred between the late 1760's and early 1780's. In this video I explore the connection and how composer Joseph Bologne used "Sturm and Drang" methods in his music. I also perform various pieces to illustrate the discussion. One of the pieces is Bologne's "Violin Sonata G Minor" with myself on piano and my daughter, Molly Ferguson, on violin.

    Chunks of the end of the Saint-Georges movement remind me of Domenico Scarlatti (K. 120), especially the use of descending thirds. Just sayin'. Nice presentation throughout.
