- Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the 18th century 'Angry Young Men' movement in Germany, 'Sturm und Drang'. Translated into English as 'Storm and Stress', this short-lived movement was characterised by raw emotion, drama and rebellion. Melvyn is joined by Tim Blanning, Emeritus Professor of Modern European History at Cambridge University; Susanne Kord, Professor of German at University College, London; and Maike Oergel, Associate Professor of German at the University of Nottingham.
Thank you for this video, it has given me some understanding of the context of Romanticism and Enlightenment as experienced in Germany.
Very interesting discussion, but the picture is not quite appropriate. While it shows Herder (sitting in the chair on the left), Schiller (reciting) and Goethe (with his hand in his pocket), it shows them at a time when they had long turned their backs on Sturm und Drang. It's Weimar Classicism, and Goethe certainly doesn't look 25 anymore. :)

Reminds me of Italian Futurism, most of the leaders died in World War 1 so the movement petered out
I just finished Faust. What a fascinating discussion. thank you
Faust would have never been written under today’s copyright laws. Look up Mickey Mouse protection act
@@isidoreaerys8745 Why not? Does it carry so many cultural references?

Thank you, can you spell the name of the woman playwright that was part of the movement Sturm und Drang? Thank you very much
