The ending, and what seems to be the most poetic part of the movie, warns us, not about man, but men.
The commentary throughout the film was written by Jean Cayrol, who suffered the horrors of concentration camps.

Tellement vrai... Ces paroles de Michel Bouquet resteront à jamais dans ma mémoire. Sans parler des images inoubliables que des générations entières d'élèves auront vu dans un silence pétrifié. Difficile de tenir jusqu'au bout sans s'écrouler en larmes ou vomir.
9 ans après, je répond à votre message, par un grand oui... Je suis en 3 ème, et on vient de nous montrer se film... horriblement vrai . Il en est difficile de ne pas pleurer ou vomir...

The ending is particularly powerful in 2019, given the bigotry, hatred, and widespread impulse of the diseased psyche to find a scapegoat to blame for its own damaged state. "We survey these ruins as if the old monster lay crushed forever beneath the rubble . . . as if we were cured once and for all of the scourge of the camps. We pretend that it happened only once, at a given time and place. We turn a blind eye to what surrounds us and a deaf ear to humanity's never-ending cry."

It isn't an isolated incident. The people who perpetrated this .... their equivalents are everywhere, all the time. It could happen anywhere at any time when conditions permit it. We must be vigilant. History has proven this correct - the Bosnian genocide of 1995, the re-education camps in China today.
