The classic origins of Thor, Iron Man, and Doctor Strange all revolved around addressing arrogance as a character flaw

Dr. Strange is the "END ALL" in the 60s & 70s comics. They nerf'd him BIG time for the movies. They had to or else there is no point in the movies because Dr. Strange and Wanda can literally write their own destiny! Defenders handle NYC threats, Avengers handle world level stuff and Dr. Strange, the sorcerer supreme!!! ..... he deals with the multiversal/for all time/everything everywhere on red alert, we don't know what we don't know level stuff.
Yeah in the comics Doctor Strange is insanely powerful. They don't quite display his full power in the MCU...at least not yet.
You should learn by now that they barely based the movies off of the comics. They took A LOT of liberties. Taskmaster and Ghost were turned into women. Ego is Star-Lord's dad(which is wrong). Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are not mutants.
In comics there is no such thing as "nothing more powerful than this"

On the Loki question.Dr.Strange was still a surgeon,Ancient one deemed the Avengers will do the job without help.

There is an actual story explanation why these sorcerers have never shown up before with all the other catastrophes. The Time Stone allowed the Ancient One to see into the future to see that she did not need to meaningfully intervene, that each of these events would work out fine. (A later movie will show that she was taking part discretely here and there but was able to hang back for the most part and let our heroes save the day). Unfortunately now she has died in this movie, and so from this point, sorcerers will start showing up more.

33:15 not really a spoiler, but, like someone from space will point out, the Chitauri aliens that Loki used are basically garbage-a**, disposable shock troops. So in retrospect, the Avengers can handle that, the Sorcerers have bigger things to deal with. lol ranked 1-10 as far as outside threats, the Chitauri are about a 2 MAYBE a 3 or 4 WITH Loki as he is atm, Dormammu's like a 7 or 8 type of threat.
Dormomu is neither good or evil he's a deity like galactus he is just what he is. In the words of loki an ant has no quarrel with a boot
Where Thor introduced magic to a degree, Doctor Strange dives deeper into the world of magic and the occult within the MCU. Also when he gets the call in his car and the medical cases are being shown to him, one of them is Rhodey's spinal injury.
Like she said: the Avengers protect the earth from physical danger and the sorcerers protect it from spiritual threats. Also as far as Antman goes remember Pym explains to Scott what will happen if he goes too small. And it ain't good.
The film in 3d was unforgettable. Simply, the best 3d experience you could possibly imagine.

something not really mentioned in the movie is that Strange spends YEARS (potentially many years) going through the time loop with dormammu, further practicing his magic and ultimately making himself a master
I liked it for various reasons. I knew what the X-Men were as a kid and Strange was featured in that. I think he was inspired by Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes which was one of my favorite novels as a child. I love the character idea at any rate of an egotist humbled by becoming hobbled. I also love the huge concepts in it and I thought they did well here fleshing them out. Then add the cast who are great imo. The questions you posed will be answered later and then you'll understand why they weren't addressed now (would give away later plot points if that was done).

There is *ALWAYS* someone more powerful. Iron Man came out in 2008 and Marvel has been pumping out movies, TV, and streaming shows non-stop. You are going to ask, "Where were these people?" a lot.
Officially, Strange is too busy to deal with "ordinary" villains. In practice, Strange costs so much in CGI, Marvel had to calm down with him.
Pre-Covid the MCU things would balance themselves out in the end even OP characters, post-covid MCU is another story completely.

"Civil War" is one of the best action-y comic book movies, has great hero involvement, and has a fantastically-deep story that directly effects the Avengers as a team and the future of the MCU. "Dr. Strange" on the other hand is subdued and has less action comparatively, but it's got a great story, great pace, great effects, an amazing character arch, MAGIC FFS, and it also carries such a weight on the Marvel Universe and it's future as well. Great movie review!
Marvel has many hero teams the avengers are the flag ship group, Dr. Strange is kinda a wild card he isn't part of the avengers but works with them all the time the team has most associated with is the defenders, not the Netflix group but yes same team, the original line up was, Dr.strange,hulk, silver surfer, and major the submariener, talk about the power house team.

Simple reason why you haven't seen Dr Strange yet. It has not be his time for the story. Not every story in a universe has to have all available characters. What the sorcerers deal with other issues and since they were not needed for any story prior you just dont know it yet. Good call back to why what was happening did not effect the people and they didnt notice. Still have to look past the fact the ancient one still would have appeared out of a sparkly circle seemingly from nowhere and surly would have turned some heads.
In the comics, Dr. Strange is pretty broken and for a long while he was easily the strongest of the marvel heroes. Each era of the comics struggles with how to handle him, how strong he should be, all because he is so broken.
I think you missed one more Stinger scene at the end.

Thor and Hulk have been Nerfed to death in the MCU
Yes they're nerfed heavily but it's not just Thor and Hulk... it's most of the really powerful characters. Dr Strange, Ego, Loki, Odin, Hela and most of all... Thanos. Meanwhile the lower-power characters mostly got boosted- Captain America and Black Panther were elevated from peak human to superhuman, Falcon was given bulletproof metal wings and a high-tech drone with powerful military ordinance. The MCU flattened the power curve- moving most charactsrs away from the extreme high and low ends and closer to the middle (which was ideal for cinematic purposes)

Strong or powerful? Doctor Strange is an Omega level, so top tier. However, Wanda Maximoff is way more powerful believe it or not. And what will blow your mind even more is there is someone even stronger then both of the combined, and said character is from the X-Men.

here's an idea, stop thinking and enjoy the movie lol @4:30 and no Dr. Strange is not the strongest, not even close. Wanda is the strongest in the MCU currently. Strange/Vision would be 2nd, Thor would be 3rd, Hulk would be 4th. Then i would say it's a 3-way tie between Spider-Man/Black Panther/Ant-Man actually. Cumberbatch is from the UK.

Earth in marvel is not just 1 earth, the comic marvel earth is earth 616, but the mcu is a hybred of 616 and the ultimate universe, this is why samuel l jackson plays nick fury, in earth 616 nick fury is David haslehof but in the ultimate universe samuel l jackson has been playing nick fury a full decade before iron man was made

To answer your question about where were they during the big events in the MCU. You will find its a common theme sometimes. Best answer is its just for writing purposes. Sometimes they will answer where someone was, other times they won't. As for this movie, its a bit complicated.
There will be a mention of where he was during the battle of NY in a later movie. General we are told though this movies takes place after Winter Soldier, but before the Thor Ragnorak movie. Though during Winter Soldier you do see Stranges name on a list that Hyrda was after. But this was mainly just to tease Strange would be a upcoming hero.
It's kinda confusing as they try to keep the MCU movies in a certain order but there are times when somethings don't add up right. Just best to think of the timeline of the movies as a "loose" order of one after another. But also remember whatever year a movie came out, so this in 2016, it means the MCU time was always about a year ahead. Thus this movie more or less was actually taking place in 2017. Again, its confusing. lol
If you liked the mind bending reality stuff in this, you should check out Inception and Tenet. You'll love it! You will either watch them and be super confused or really loving it. Unless you watched them already. Can't remember.
I remember when the trailer for the movie came out, so many people were mad the Ancient One didn't look like in the comics. In comics she was a he and a steretypical super old asian guy. Obviously they did away with that to make it more modern. And I think Tilda did an amazing job as the Ancient One. Heck the whole cast is amazing. Strange is pretty much tied near the top of my fav MCU heroes.
Though comedy wise AntMan and the Guardians are at the top.
The original sorcerer Supreme was augamoto, the medalist the sorcorer Supreme wears is the eye of augamoto, in the story line of 1,000,000 B.C. when Odin first came to midgard he was already hear and ancient at that time, but there must always be a sorcerer Supreme and now it's Dr. Stranges time
That 's in the comics, the history and lore of the MCU is entirely different.
In the MCU Odin and other Asgardians have lifespans of just 5000 years so the events of Avengers 1,000,000 BC never happened The MCU's Eye of Agamotto was the time stone instead of a different artifact that dispels any magical darkness and sees through all illusions.
Is a movie, not a riddle or a puzzle that you can solve in the first 15 minutes. Just relax, let the story unfold, enjoy the acting... For example that scene where Strange raging in frustration is so contemptible with Christine: they were magnificent! If you stop every 30 seconds to suppose what will be next, then where's the good part in watching a movie?
You don't have to know previously all the Marcel characters, there's a lot a people thinking that the Avenger were and are what they saw in the MCU. Others are really funny saying things like "a She-Hulk and a woman so powerful like Captain Marvel only can be woke propaganda"... Oh man, I love that laughs so much!

And The One Above All is basically the Christian god in terms of power but they never really do much except watch shit happen. But they can be killed and has been before in the comics.
It is a lot of power but then we dont know if Thor or Hulk can be killed. As you said Vision and Wanda are also very powerful. Is Dr. Strange just a mortal with a cool toy that can be caught off guard while sleeping? Can he predict and avoid his own demise?
