  • After our reaction to Global News' "Cricket rules explained in 2 minutes", we had several requests to react to Netflix's version "Cricket" from their Series "Explained". We definitely didn't grasp the entire concept after 2 minutes so this episode definitely helped to fill in the blanks! Maybe these two clueless Canadians aren't so clueless anymore (about cricket at least) after this reaction! Hope you enjoy.

    Test Match format: 7-8 hours a day, 5 days long (no over cap, time limit for a day)
    One Day International (ODI) format: 7-8 hours in a day (50 overs per innings)
    Twenty twenty (T20) format: 3-3.5 hours in a day (20 overs per innings)
    Test cricket is still played, though T20 is the more popular version. Yes, fielders don't use gloves, only the wicketkeeper does.

      1) In test matches there is a cap of 90 overs per day.
      2) 3 Sessions of 2 hours each, 40 Mins of Lunch Time and 20 Mins of Tea time, So 7 Hours of play each day.
      3) In each Session you are supposed to deliver 30 overs.
      In every format the bowling team is supposed to bowl 15 overs per hour. So that's how the calculation for how long a days play will be is calculated.

    The three main forms of cricket are still played. No longer do international teams come to play just Test, they play a Series which includes 3 or 4 Test Matches along with 3 ODI and 3 T20 games, for a 'Summer of Cricket'. Thes normally start at the beginning of December and conclude in the start of February; so most cricketers bring their families with them, to enjoy the breaks between games.

    There was a distinct slant to that documentary, and much it misses out. Cricket in the 18th and 19th centuries was played and supported by aristocrats and the gentry certainly, but it was also played by working men. It was played on the village green by the blacksmith and the squire alike, a game that brought people of different classes together in way that tended not to happen elsewhere. As GM Treleyvan wrote. "If the French noblesse had been capable of playing cricket with their peasants, their chateaux would never have been burnt.".

    What they mean by "posh" and "inaccessible" is that back in the early years of cricket when a match might last 3 - 5 days only those players or spectators who didn't need to work for a living could play or watch. It's why when the first professional players appeared they were looked down on by the "gentlemen" players.

    Cricket in England when played as Test Matches were inaccessible to the working class due to the length of the game, they couldn't just take of work to attend. It was to a similar situation in Australia, but a lot of cricket fans would take some of their holiday leave, to attend a Test Match. Cricket available to the general public was basically club, county or district matches, which were played on the weekend; so only 2 days not the 5 days for Tests.

    Test Matches would start on either a Wednesday or Thursday, and end on a Sunday or Monday. Each days play was divided into three 2hr sessions, allowing for a break in play; the bowling team were required to bowl 90 overs per day, if they failed to meet this requirement they would be fined 10% of match payment and the opposition would extra runs determined by the highest runs in an over for every over the bowling team is short.

    It's called test cricket for a reason. Let's take opening batsmen. Their job is to not get out early, wear the ball down a bit and try to score a few runs. A very good opener can score 150-200 over a day and a half. That's being switched on, 100% concentration for 8 hours then having to switch straight back on again the next morning. And fast bowlers, absolutely destroying their knees and shoulders for hours and hours. It's a tough game, a proper test of skill and determination.

    Test cricket last up to 90 overs and couple of breaks (longer - lunch break and shorter ones - tea break) each day but can go beyond 90 overs for a specific time tho.

    Test cricket was inaccessible because what working person can take FIVE DAYS off work to watch a sports game?

  • @tycosyco
    @tycosyco 3 года назад

    Test matches usually start each day at about 10 AM and play until 6 PM and picks up the next morning where it left off the previous evening. As for the tickets issue, you usually buy a ticket for each day and pick which days you want to watch so days 4 and 5 are most popular.

    • @Brakdayton
      @Brakdayton Год назад

      Don’t forget the break for tea. And you could buy a ticket for day four or five that gets washed out by rain, or completed by day three.

    Test match has five days, 8 hours a day with three sessions. They have tea and lucnh break. Whereas One day match is 50 overs for each side, 50 overs take 4-5 hours. After one team is done playing 50 overs than there is inning break.

  • @shanukhamaru6432

    In a test match it's almost 8 hours /day .provided 1 lunch break and 1 tea break.
    And a 50-50 match gets done in 7.5 hours normally.

    To be honest the 5 day cricket is the beast
    It's damn interesting
    But the teams competing have to be equally skillful.
    What the first time listeners think is a bat and ball and 5 days is ridiculous and will be boring which is quite obvious to think
    But it isn't
    There is so much and so much more to the 5 day format
    It's just amazing.

    Its a great game due to the unique structure of the first team setting the total and the second team trying to overtake that score, the thrill of the chase is whats it all about. Imagine baseball where the yankees bat thru the whole 9 innings straight with the pitchers rotating every 6 pitches, then the Red Sox coming in and having 9 innings to overtake that total, if they do before the alloted 9 innings then they win. Simple really. Test cricket has the teams having unlimited pitches to score as much as possible before their batters get retired down the card , One day cricket each team gets 300 pitches to score as much as possible, T20 version each team gets 120 pitches to set a score.
