This is mostly about the top leagues, but the depth of leagues is almost infinite. Almost anyone can get involved in a pub team or a Sunday league team. That’s what makes football so great, it’s open to all, you just have to have a passion for the game.

The matches don't just end when the referee feels like it. The match is in two halves. The refs keep a careful note of any stoppages, injury time, time wasting, pitch invasions by fans etc during the game. This is then added onto the game at the end of each half. The time added for each item IS at the ref's discretion, but they don't just stick on the odd 20 minutes when they feel like it. This can make games very tense at the end when you end up in this injury time period, especially during crucial matches involving team relegation or promotion.

@@CoL_Drake It isn't just injuries that add to extra time - it's also all the substitutions, VAR and if the ref thinks the other team is time wasting when taking goal kicks, free kicks etc, he will also add on a little bit. It's not an exact-down-to-the-second science, but there is definitely thought and logic behind how much extra time is calculated and played. And even if there are 6 minutes shown on the board after the 90 minutes is up, extra time can be added during extra time for the same reasons above.

    • @HellDuke-
      @HellDuke- 3 года назад +8

@@CoL_Drake any actions that stop the match from happening is factored in. The reason why you could add 3 minutes and after 4 is that the referee will typically allow an attack to finish. The "Kicking it back and forward to each other" is done for quite a few reasons, 1, as the video mentions, you keep possession, the other team can't score if they don't have the ball 2, you hopefully frustrate your opponent and draw them out of their positions, imagine two centre backs kicking the ball between each other, eventually the opposition strikers and centre forward will try to press them, this leaves a hole in their position, so one of your team mates goes into that space and receives the ball, now one of the opposition wingers is going to have to press them, leaving a space on the flanks... before you know it the other team aren't in any of their positions as they're having to cover other spaces left behind by their team mates causing disorganisation. 3 it can simply be to run the clock down if you're already winning, 4 it can be used to give your team a breather and a chance to reorganise themselves after being under some heavy pressure. Football is a very cerebral as well as physical game, its like a physical chess match constantly hanging on a knifes edge

In regards to signing kids it works kinda like this, in the UK (and most of the footballing world) , individual teams having scouting teams that scan practically everywhere with a lot of these being childrens leagues practically (U9s through to U18s) and approach them into joining the clubs academy. Where they'll train football practically daily, as well as have their schooling - it's here where obviously some go onto to eventually reach the first team, others get loaned out to other clubs and some unfortunately fail to make the cut.
So for us our schools and University teams are there like you're school/college system, but it's a positive side effect that scouts can attend these matches looking out for talent. But generally most players who enter the footballing pyramid are spotted from amateur/non-league football the world over. Some huge players in the premier league now were originally scouting like on the streets of Brazil and Africa playing barefoot when they were offered the chance to move country and try to make a career out of it.
Equally in some of these lower league clubs (say a League one or two club), if a promising player comes through their academy and a Top team comes in to buy them, a sell-on fee can be useful as say the top team buy a promising player for £5mil with a 20% sell on clause. Say that player turns out to be amazing and is sold in the future for say like £80 million, 20% of that £80mil will go to that original lower league club. Which can absolutely change the fortunes for that club, the sums I listed are a bit extreme but you get the point.

The video you watched is slightly incorrect at some points for example relagation:
2 teams get kicked out of the league and replaced by the top two teams in league below.
However the third worse team plays the third best team from the league below to determine who is going to play in the bigger league. That is the relegation, not the two sure losers but the ones that have to fight over it.

A cup is a tournament where teams get eliminated one by one until there are only two left and there's a final.
If you win you get to stay, if you loose you are out of the tournament.
A league is a set of pre-scheduled games where every team plays every other team (twice) and you get points (two for a win, one for a draw, zero for a loss) points are counted at the end of the season, and determines who wins the league.
No-one is eliminated in league play, every team plays the entire season, but the three bottom teams gets dropped down to a lower league, and the three best teams of the lower league will take their place next season.
The [world cup] is a tournament, where every country (that qualifies) gets to put together a national team. The players have to be citizens of the country they represent. It's like in the olympics. (Wich do not have a pro (mens-) football tournament, as that would steal the light from all other sports. The world cup is held every 4 years.
[UEFA champion's league] is a league in wich the 20 best teams out of the european leagues compete against each other. Champion's league plays every year in paralell with each country's own leagues.
In theory, champion's league could be made up entirely of Spanish teams. (If they were good enough)
The european teams are international in the sence that they consist of players from many different countries. The teams can recruit players from any country, and any league within those countries.
In the leagues, a player only represent the team (club) that has signed them. The clubs or teams all have a home city.

  • @WKogut
    @WKogut 3 года назад +36

24:37 he said "to youth academies", most professional teams have their own academies that they develop young players in (they are mostly local kids, very rarely you see a foreign kid there) and when they get older they may join your main team. The club has several youth teams and most often a reserve team for players old enough to be pros, but not good enough to be in the first team. You are full on pro from the age of 16 most of the times, there is no school/college system like in the US. .

While most cities, towns and even larger villages in the UK tend to have football teams, generally it is just the city based teams that have the resources to get into the more competitive leagues. In theory they could all compete, in reality smaller teams just couldn't afford to pay professional players. Also as long as you can get a working visa you could join a team as a professional player (assuming you have the talent and opportunity).
The Premier league is the top UK based championship that happens every year while the World Cup only happens every 4 years. Also the World cup is an international championship which is separate from all the other championships that consists only of national teams like England, Germany, Italy, etc. I would suggest watching the England matches if you do decide to go through this years world cup as you will be most likely to get commentary in English as well as having a few less confusing names being mentioned.

World Cup is for INTERNATIONAL COUNTRIES all over the World like The USA/England/ Brazil. The other massive INTERNATIONAL Tournament is on RIGHT NOW and on Sunday it is THE FINAL. These are The Euros and just for European Countries. The FIMAL is in England between England and Italy. The atmosphere will be electric and songs/chants will ALL be by the fans NOT controlled in any way by the Stadium. The difference each year between the Top 2 English Divisions (the best in the world ) is $240,000,000 and there are 92 MAIN teams in the FOUR top English Divisions. In the English F A Cup once in a while, a team OUTSIDE the Top 92 League Clubs WILL knock out a major team.

I believe there are currently about 42,000 teams in England. About 2000 of these are professional or semi-professional. There are 11 tiers to the National League System, with the top 5 tiers being professional.
There are 20 teams in the Premier League (tier 1),
72 clubs in the English Football League (divided into 24 clubs in the Championship aka tier 2, 24 clubs in League 1 aka tier 3, and 24 clubs in League 2 aka tier 4),
68 clubs in the National League (divided into 23 clubs in tier 5, 22 in tier 6, and 22 in tier 7),
228 clubs in Southern League/Northern Premier League/Isthmian League (tiers 7-8),
680 clubs in tiers 9 and 10 (that contain 17 different leagues and 34 divisions),
and tier 11 has about 900 clubs and 60 leagues.
And this is just for England (apart from 5 welsh clubs lol)
so put simply, there are a lot.

10:40 what she said is actually accurate. Best football games always between great defensive team against great offensive team which keep tension at the highest level for long time. Waiting one or the other cracking up makes it more exciting. Most boring ones are between two defensive team that have no goals to chase. They are middle pack team and they both happy about it. It's nearly end of the season so even players don't care that much and ball always stays in the middle of the pitch. It's a nightmare for people who watching it.

Fifa World Cup and the just ended UEFA EURO are basically international competitions where countries compete with each other. The format there is a group stage with 4 teams in a group in the same format that was explained in the video (3 points for a win, 1 for a draw) with each team playing the other teams once. Then you get the playoffs where it's a knockout. The FIFA WC and EURO each happen every 4 years with a 2 year offset. So you get the World Cup, then 2 years and you get a EURO then once again 2 years a World Cup.
In the meantime The UEFA champions league and each league is going every year where it's the clubs.
Quick answer for the goalie and the shirts. The goalie has to wear an outfit of a different colour than anyone else on the field. So let's say your team is white, the enemy team is red and the referee is yellow, your shirt cannot be of any of those colours.
As for the rules. The goalie can indeed use his hands to pickup the ball, however this can be done only within the goalkeeper area (the big box in front of the goal), outside of that large box he must play as any other player. There are also small rules about picking up the ball but too complex for now.
The goalie cannot be tackled in the goalie area. Any such action or action that intentionally puts the goalie in danger is typically met with a red card. Basically, the player gets sent off and his team has to play a 10 vs 11

  • @lauz-im3ov
    @lauz-im3ov 3 года назад +6

The goalkeepers do wear a different strip to the rest of the team. They can go anywhere on the pitch but can only touch the ball with their hands/arms within the penalty box - that's the big rectangle in front of the goal. They wear a different colour so it's easy to spot them and know if the person touching the ball is allowed to.

"Can an American football player play in Europe?" This year Chelsea won the Champions League (Europe's biggest football competition). One of their star players is Christian Pulisic, an American. He earns £3.2m per year. The World Cup happens every 4 years. This is for national teams (like England, Scotland, USA etc), not Club teams (eg Chelsea, Man Utd etc). Goalies are the only players who are allowed to handle the ball in their own goal areas - hence they wear different coloured shirts to their team mates so the referee can quickly identify them. Refs will award the other team a penalty if anyone other than the goalie handles the ball.

When he was talking about signing kids and then selling them later, he's talking about academies, over here we don't have secondary school or university football in the way you guys do for your sports, or atleast they aren't as professional or important as yours. Instead we have academies, which is where professional and semi professional teams will not only have their senior teams but also youth teams for each age group, usually from about under 9s to under 23s (which is usually just a reserve team).
These academies find the best young players they can and train them until they're either old enough and good enough for the first team, or not good enough and too old to ever be good enough, if they're good enough they'll either be started or loaned out or sometimes poached by bigger clubs, if they aren't good enough, they might be released for free or sold to a smaller club.
This system means that young talents get the professional coaching they need and provides a source of income for smaller clubs, take carlisle united for example, they allowed Manchester United to take their 14 year old youth keeper dean henderson for free on the condition that he have many bonuses in his contract. Now he's a good goalkeeper for man united and carlisle united get paid every time he plays for man united, and if man united ever sell him carlisle will be paid 20% of what they sell him for. And this isn't even carlisle's only example of this either, there's also players such as jarrad branthwaite, who was sold to Everton on a relatively low fee, but has similair clauses in his contract.

Our Town alone has up to 20 teams. And it is a small town of 30 000 people.
You can actually create your own team, and play against the big teams. All you have to do is register your team, and try your best. Your team can end up being in the National Tournaments or some thing.
There is actually a tournament dedicated to small and new teams to try their luck in joining the bigger leagues.

To illustrate a couple of your questions; my team finished top of the English Championship, and as a result we're playing in the Premier this year. Unfortunately we are likely to finish in the bottom three this year, so will be relegated back to the championship next year. And we have just signed a Yank, who we signed from a team in Germany.

About the kids: basically, if a team buys a good kid really young, they can train them to be the best player they could possibly be. Football will be the most important thing in their life, everything else comes second.
Of course the team needs to get permission from the kid's parents and the kid themself. In fact, it's often the parents that try to get their kids signed to professional clubs at a young age in the first place, because they'll probably become rich and famous. It's every little boy's dream to one day play professionally, so almost all of them gladly accept, even if it means moving halfway across the world to do so.
There are of course strict regulations in place to keep everything as safe and humane as possible, including a maximum number of training hours per week and a mandatory level of performance at school.
That being said, the kids that get scouted are often very, very young (Robin van Persie was only 5 years old when he joined his first professional club), so one could ask if it's ethical to completely control the lives of kids that are that young, similar to the discussion about child Disney stars.

The World Cup is its own tournament that happens every four years with national teams playing each other (e.g. England vs USA) and that tournament happens during the "off-season" once the club leagues have all ended.
The Premier League is the top league in England for English club teams (e.g. Liverpool vs Manchester City).
The Champions' League is a tournament for the best club teams from the different leagues in Europe to play against each other (e.g. Liverpool vs Real Madrid).

    - World Cup is every 4 years and is about qualified national teams (countries) competing for the trophy.
    - UEFA Champions league is European tournament involving the qualified clubs (cities/towns) of Europe, every major football continent has its own version.
    - National major leagues (also called ''championship'') involve the 18-20 best clubs (cities/towns) of a given country. Then you have minor leagues (also called ''2nd/3rd/4th divisions'') also using the promotion/relegation system.
    - The Cup involves every clubs from every division of the given country, some low division clubs managed to win the trophy.
American players can play in any European clubs (or elsewhere) if a club is willing to hire them and fill the proper paperworks in time, just like any regular worker hired by a foreign company.
A very young player can be hired on the expectation that his talent will grow enough for him to be a top player but he will mostly play for the amateur/youngster team of the club, usually 16yo is the minimum age i saw a player in a major league.

    Great comments by you!
And - please believe me! - I'm not here to correct it in any kinds!
I'm 53 from Dortmund, Germany. It is [Dortmund] round about 600,000 inhabitants [formerly quite well known for steel and breweries - right now for technical inventions and universities] ...
Right now there is the European Nations Cup in Germany 'cause we host it. Also in Dortmund - we got a very fine Stadium for it, that's true: I enjoyed a LOT as foreign nations played against each other ... it happened yesterday as Italy won against another nation called "Albania" [Sorry ... we got a lot of different nations inside Europe, which you probably cannot understand at first] ... traffic jam, yelling people in a very good and polite way. I appreciate this!
Please take a view on a regular match inside of the major leagues - like in England, Italy, Spain ... and Germany for sure. Sometimes there is some trouble, but we are able to handle it ...
    Best wishes from
    Stefan [Dortmund, Germany]

The game do not end when ever the ref fells like it, he time the down time, the time he have stopped the game, and ad it, but only he know for sure, apart from every one else with a stopwatch/timer, with in a few sec. So the match is 2x45 min. Plus down time.

The only way to join from the US is being scouted and bought, you can`t just join any club. So you just start playing at any local club (from the whatevs league/series D and below, only mums care about, as he put it in the video 16:20), scouts get around all over the world, they will find you if you are good, they some times get 10-15% of 100 mill $ deals.

The Euro and the world cup are only for national teams, the other once are for clubs, they can be from mixed nationality to some extend.
Like tonight the Danish national team play the English national team, but a lot of the Danish players are also playing for English clubs, and are part of champions league for English clubs.
This also means team mates on national teams, tend to all be opponents in club football.

Possession football is good at wearing out your opponent, chasing the ball takes more energy than keeping it. That's why you'll see defenders just passing it between each other, the opposing attacking players will be pressing to get it back, kinda like forechecking in hockey, if the defence play right the attackers wont have the energy to do anything with it when they do get it, while they are doing that they are also looking to exploit the space left by the midfielders who may have also moved out of position to pressure the ball carrier. For the team trying to get the ball back, pressure is essential! You cannot allow the team in possession too much time to think, that constant pressure will eventually cause them to make a mistake... there is soooooo much strategy involved in footy, it really is a thinking person's game.

Here is some breakdown for the Champions League:
    1) Qualifying for Champions League : Champions to Top 4. (Slots allocation depends on club's nation coefficient ranking. Higher coefficient point = Top 4, Lower coefficient point = Champion only)
    2) Coefficient is based on countries ranking on Continental football organization.
    3) A 3rd tier European Club competition was introduced, called UEFA Europa Conference League. Directly focus to lower ranking domestic clubs. The qualifying criteria is similarly to Champions League but the opposite in terms of qualifying spots.

You may notice there are two rectangles in front of the goal.
If you just touch the opposing goalkeeper while they are in the smaller rectangle, that can be considered a foul.
The bigger rectangle is where the goalkeeper is allowed to touch the ball with their hands. If they go outside those rectangles, they become just another player and have to follow the same rules.
Also, if the defending team fouls the attacking team inside the bigger rectangle, the attacking team gets a penalty kick 11 meters from the goal with nobody but the goalkeeper allowed to defend.

About "selling player" - the process is as follows - player has an contract with the current club but wants to change club and there is a new club that would be interested in him. The new club negotiates with the old club a price for agreeing to terminate the contract with the player. Next the player agrees the terms of the new contract with the new club. All this can not happen without the consent of the player.

The passing back and forth and sideways is to lure the other team forward in their pressure to be able to surprise them with a fast deep pass forward or a quick rush with the ball by one player or a drible with the ball past some opponents - or even a very long pass towards their goal area to create a scoring chance against the now (locally) depleted opponent team.

The part about young players is more of a training programme agreement rather than an actual contract, since contracts imply labor and child-labor is forbidden.
A friend of mine from grade-school had a similar thing where he got scouted playing in the little leagues and got promissed a spot in the training programme for PSV, one of the bigger clubs in The Netherlands. It basically meant that he would follow a training and diet programme set out by them to train him as a football player and he would follow schooling with an associated high-school/college programma that allowed him to follow a more strict training regime by setting out seperate homework tasks that give him some breathing room in that respect.
After the programme he got loaned out for 3 years, since that was part of a later contract from when he turned 18, to another club in the same division. After those 3 years he was transfer free and moved to play in the States after two more years of local football. He played in Orange County FC and now plays for Cheonan City FC.
So the youth-player thing is just a seperate educational programme that allows young players more time to train for the sport alongside their regular educational programme.
