As someone who's read the entire lore document (god help me) I think you did a pretty good job explaining the lore. It's actually much more correct than you probably think it is. One small correction though: we don't know if Xeroc betrayed Zeratros. Remember that the lore items were written by Yharim, who's heavily biased against the gods and doesn't know what happened between Xeroc and Zeratros. It's actually really implied that Xeroc's ascension was somehow different from the ascensions of the other gods, since they and Silva are the only gods who share domains with the dragons they absorbed. Both are much stronger than normal gods in some way, Silva doesn't die when killed (she's been thrown into the abyss multiple times) and Xeroc is simply the strongest being in the solar system, and both were exceptions to the general rule that the only surviving gods were the evasive ones (Yharim's crusade didn't end because he met gods he couldn't kill, nor because his army left him. He's still stronger than everything except Xeroc and Noxus. It ended because the other gods were too good at running away.). There are many theories why Xeroc and Silva are different from the other gods, the two big ones are Terminus and Dragon Attunement, but the reason they are simply hasn't been released yet. There's an entire side of the lore (actually multiple sides, word of god is that only 5-10% of the lore is public currently) that hasn't been told. The upcoming Sunken Sea overhaul update, Boss Rush dialogue rewrite, and Aerialite books will clarify a lot of the pro-god arguments. We only know what Godseeker Yharim has told us so far. Good video though! (me try not to write multiple paragraphs about Cal lore challenge (impossible))
Huh… I never thought to doubt the lore items as they are the only source of information we have, but that makes sense. It’s nice to know I wasn’t too far off the mark, though! Thanks for the insight.
@@AskaKwestan You don't have to necessarily *doubt* the lore items, Yharim generally doesn't actually lie explicitly, it's just that he withholds a lot of info that he thinks would paint him or his crusade in a bad light (yes Lord Yharim, torching the sunken sea and thus killing everyone who needed water to breath was certainly necessary for your crusade. There were definitely no other options here.). He also doesn't know everything either ("hey there buddy. it's me, the devourer of gods. some giant worm from another dimension that can fill the exact role in yharim's army that he needs who had an oddly specific powerset that happens to be able to absorb essences from gods. im from this far off dimension with no gods. how did i know what gods were? 😁"). It's not that the lore items are unreliable, they're just unreliable for painting a clear unbiased picture of the calverse. They are reliable for painting a picture of how Yharim views the world. Here's a question for you to think about (if you're not tired of cal lore): there's crimson and corruption lore items yeah? Both are made from the essence of gods? Why is there no Hallow lore item? Actually let me rephrase that: why does Yharim seemingly ignore the Hallow? Since absolutely despicable gods create things like the crimson/corruption, what kind of gods create something as pure as the Hallow?
Good video! I feel like you did a good job at covering what makes Calamity special for many, while also being quite entertaining as well. However, I would like to bring up *one* mod that I also thinks deserves more coverage. Personally, I think that the current best mod on Tmodloader is the Spooky mod. While not nearly as large, it provides an amazing assortment of content that stretches from the moment you start a playthrough, all the way up until late game. Rather than focusing hard on the loop of bossfights, Spooky mod focuses on making for a much better experience with exploration, adding in 4 highly developed biomes, each filled with content to discover as you go. While Calamity does provide some new biomes of its own, they are kept as a side-piece that help make its gameplay loop flow better with progression. Meanwhile, Spooky mod makes sure to capture as much mystery and adventure into its new additions, putting all of its content into just these locations. Because of this, Spooky mod is also much more compatible with other mods due to its minimal changes to the base game, while Calamity is frequently less friendly towards trying to play with multiple content mods active. As for aesthetic and gameplay, Spooky is amazing in those departments as well. Spooky mod has an incredibly fun, charming and unique style to its presentation, designed to capture the nostalgia and goofiness of the spookiest month of the year. Whether it be walking through a forest full of browning leaves and delightful little creatures to exploring the depths of the dark and maze-like catacombs, to even exploring the icky eye-themed thriller in the underworld. The mod is bound to give anyone who plays it some fond memories of Halloween from their childhood, while also exploring many of its common aspects in some of the most creative, inspired ways possible. This is all capped off with an amazing, perfectly funky soundtrack by its composer BananaLizard. Don't take this comment as me trying to say Calamity is bad or even that Spooky mod is a better mod. Calamity has a lot of its own merits, and your video does a great job covering them. If you ever look into making another video essay on a Terraria mod however, do consider Spooky mod as a great topic for next time.
Honestly, I'm kinda sad that these videos get so overshadowed by the songs. The songs are incredible, but these are also amazing! In conclusion, underrated.
@@AskaKwestan having played both. I do agree to what you say about calamity being as good. and my opinion might be biased as thorium's my favorite mod. (thank you for the heart btw)
The lore items are rewritten as if everything they want to add in the future is already there, hence why there's a lot of information and mentions of stuff that seemingly doesn't exist. For instance: stuff like Braelor, the Onyx Kinsmen, the Distortion, and Statis. They are all stuff that will be added or will get more information in the future.
This is a very good video to summarize the Calamity experience. As someone who has recently beaten the mod for the first time, I have been obsessed with playing it as the other classes (so much that I have beaten it with three of it's five clases) because of how much I love the passion, the love and care put into this mod, because genuinely it feels like a DLC to the game, and I just can't go back to regular Terraria after it. As for why people play infernum... I am currently playing through it, and I have yet to find a reason why I dislike it. I think the main reason why people search for difficulty like this is to get that feeling of accomplishment, the same reason why people go through such lengths to 100% games or even play some of those games people know as rage games like Getting Over It, Only Up, hell, even things like Dark Souls or Touhou. I have yet to reach Infernum's highest challenges (as I stopped playing last night up until Polterghast), but having put in 4 hours just to beat Providence, it felt GOOD. SO GOOD in fact that, even after dying dozens of times, I said to myself: "fuck that was such a fun fight". As someone watching your content for the first time, I really liked this video, you did a good job hooking me up with your intro, and though I disagree with some of your points, I see past that and understand your love for this game and this mod, and I really appreciate the effort you put into this video. But hey, skill issue. Thanks so much for the comment dude. The compliments mean a lot! So i will finish vanilla terraria first and then go to calamity. Fire video tho, really enjoyable even to someone with almost no terraria knowledge so props to you
7:24 Calamity is a pretty poor way of making someone experience Terraria for the first time. The difficulty of boss fights is too complex for beginners unless you play on Classic (at that point just play vanilla since Adrenaline/Rage are only on Revengeance), same with the crafting recipes later on. It can also negatively impact how someone views Terraria's gameplay in a way, because Calamity mostly waters down big chunks of the game (Mining/exploration and "mobbing") in favor of boss fights through a mix of said aspects being made too easy and shortened to the point little preparation & interaction is necessary. This is also why I disagree with summing up Calamity as it merely enhancing base Terraria, because not only are they pretty different fundamentally but Calamity has a lot of changes & mechanics I find disagreeable and makes me enjoy vanilla & other content mods more.
I did make an effort to touch on the fact this was a semi hot-take in the video. For clarification, I did mean a friend hand-holding you through to play with so the difficulty of bosses could be evened out and such. This has come from a bit of personal experience when a mate of mine who had no idea about Terraria wanted to hop on so we pulled him into a Calamity run and we all had a great time. Personally, I don't think Calamity makes exploration easier though. If anything there's way more to do. And mining only feels easier post-ML definitely. But by that point, you've basically seen it all. Early game and mid game still feel like base with extra stuff. If mobbing refers to farming mobs for low drop rates, I do personally prefer it that way because being forced to make an AFK farm for a drop was always a little tedious to me. Of course, I don't sum up Calamity as "just enhancing the base game" because that would be a discredit to both the mod and the original. Rather, I tried to convey how it integrates well enough and adds tons to have fun with a friend who knows nothing about it. I definitely wouldn't just tell a friend to play Calamity by themselves knowing a single thing about Terraria. Now THAT'S a bad time. Thanks a ton for the insightful comment!
@@AskaKwestan Calamity weapons tend to have a combination of big hitboxes, significant piercing and/or homing (often two of those) while having similar if not inflated DPS compared to the average vanilla weapon. As such, they easily destroy regular enemies as they have little to no chance of fighting back most of the time, compared to vanilla where crowd control weapons will leave the tougher enemies alive for more time and boss-killer DPS weapons often have drawbacks that needs you to not be careless (or simply lack piercing). You are definitely not forced to make AFK farms in vanilla, if you can handle it you can combine water candle + battle potion with some flat surfaces to have constant streams of enemies to fight, and using the different specialized weapons in your disposal to survive the onslaught until you get the drop(s) you want is part of the fun. But when I used to play Calamity regularly, most of my "mobbing" experience was drinking Zerg potion and holding left click as my extremely powerful, large weapon annihilated everything as they spawned in and I'd get my inventory clogged in less than 30 seconds. I mean, THAT is cool and awesome powertripping, but in the long run I started preferring the more balanced vanilla gameplay. It may be different since last time I checked and played, but Calamity increases the base mining speed a ton while also nerfing Ancient Chisel if I'm correct, making the incentive & rewards for obtaining items like higher tier early game pickaxes and (again) Ancient Chisel much less significant. So that's why I feel like exploration is easier and more streamlined, with imo a lesser feeling of progress in that department. The Abyss is the big exception to most of what I described and is one of the best pieces of Calamity content. Thanks for the response!
