  • Join me, Mickey-Jo (‪@MickeyJoTheatre‬) & Ashley (‪@AshleyHufford‬) on a theatre trip to see the musical Here Lies Love (‪@herelieslovebway‬) on Broadway at the Broadway Theatre in New York City.
Find out more about the show, how immersive it is, the theatre, merchandise and more. We saw the production twice, standing and seated, and in this video I discuss the pros and cons of both experiences, the differences and my own personal recommendation.
    ------------------------------------
    ABOUT HERE LIES LOVE
The immersive disco musical is based on the real story of Filipino First Lady Imelda Marcos, whose husband Ferdinand Marcos was the 10th president of the Philippines and ruled as dictator for 20 years until 1986. The musical featured a score by Grammy, Tony, and Oscar winner David Byrne and Grammy winner Fatboy Slim, with music by both, and concept and lyrics by Byrne.
Leading the final cast is Arielle Jacobs as Imelda Marcos opposite Jose Llana as Ferdinand Marcos, with Conrad Ricamora as Ninoy Aquino, a Philippine senator who critiqued the Marcos family during its regime until his assassination in 1983. Ninoy Aquino's murder sparked the People Power Revolution which resulted in the removal of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos from power. Both Llana and Ricamora reprised their performances from the musical's 2013 Off-Broadway run.
The all-Filipino cast, a first for Broadway, includes Broadway alums Melody Butiu (Doctor Zhivago), Jaygee Macapugay (Shucked), Julia Abueva (KPOP), Aaron Alcaraz (Mean Girls), Kristina Doucette (Wicked), Jeigh Madjus (Moulin Rouge!), Geena Quintos (Miss Saigon), Shea Renne (Hadestown), and Angelo Soriano (Aladdin), as well as Moses Villarama, Jasmine Forsberg, Reanne Acasio, Renée Albulario, Carol Angeli, Nathan Angelo, Roy Flores, Timothy Matthew Flores, Sarah Kay, Aaron J. Albano, Danielle Troiano, and Aaron "AJ" Mercado. For many, the show is personal as several of them and their families lived in the Philippines when the Marcos family was in power.
Returning to the project from its Off-Broadway run are original director Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge) and choreographer Annie-B Parson. They are joined on the creative team by music director J. Oconer Navarro, Tony-nominated scenic designer David Korins, Tony-winning costume designer Clint Ramos, Tony-winning lighting designer Justin Townsend, sound designers M.L. Dogg and Cody Spencer, Tony-nominated projection designer Peter Nigrini, and cultural and community liaison Giselle “G” Töngi. Casting is by Tara Rubin, Xavier Rubiano, and Gail Quintos. Bobby Garcia serves as casting consultant. General management is by Foresight Theatrical. Tom Gandey and J Pardo also contributed additional music for the production.

So awesome that y'all got to see the show both ways! I loved it from the floor the one time I went to see it. Such a blast! I also got to see Lea, even if that part is quite small, but still very cool. Glad y'all got to see Arielle and Conrad your second time around, too. They're fantastic. It's truly a fantastic cast all-around. I got to meet almost all of them at the stage door, too. This was probably the show where the most cast members came out to the stage door of all of my stage-door experiences. Love truly lies here at this show!
PS: I don't know if y'all got to do more immersive theater this trip, but I hope y'all check out Sleep No More someday! It was also another unique and super cool experience. I've been eyeing it for years and finally went on my latest trip when I also saw HLL, and I'm dying to go back to experience them both again!

Thank you for being in depth on the difference between standing and seated. I still need to see this show!

I've been seeing Broadway shows for decades, and Here Lies Love is - by FAR - the most extraordinarily staged show I've ever attended. Like you, just walking into the theater before it began, I was mesmerized how they turned a theater into a disco. The show happens all around you, you feel like you're a part of it.
I'm sure safety issues are why you can't bring drinks to the dance floor. You're constantly moving around, so my guess is they want to make sure they won't get sued if someone slips on a wet floor.

Thanks! Very helpful to have both standing and seated perspectives. Appreciate the recommendation.

I might be in the minority that loves the standing experience way more than seated. I've seen it 4 times now: 3 times standing, 1 time seated. If (or when) I go back again, I would choose standing without a doubt.
Btw, in the first half, I noticed Arielle and Conrad were not on. I hope you got to see them in your second visit.

I'm so glad you went to see the show twice! Honestly, you could see it twice on the dance floor and it wouldn't be the exact same show/experience!
I have been lucky enough to see the show 11 times: 6 times standing, 3 mezzanine, 1 floor side seats (in the house left side) and 1 in the VIP/Club Lounge. Most people I talk to agree with me and think the dance floor is the best way to see the show (if you only see it once). It is truly an experience like no other on Broadway!

I was excited to see what you had to say! I haven't experienced the sitting version, but I agree if you're only going once to see the standing version. It really is a unique experience and a lot of fun. The story line was also super unique which I enjoyed as well. I was excited to have a Sunday night show, Here Lies Love seems to be one of the few shows that runs on Sunday evenings.
I am assuming they don't allow drinks on the floor due the possibility of both spilling/wet floors and possibly people throwing the cups (I recently saw a Shania Twain concert in the US at an indoor arena and they were pouring beer from cans into plastic cups because of the potential of people throwing cans and bottles!! What is wrong with people, and what a waste!). It would be nice to have a drink to make it feel more like a club though. Maybe they need to give them out in spill proof toddler cups :)

I'd love the experience to stand being a shorter show. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be visiting in time & if I was because of medical bag needs I'd likely have to do a seat. Love the uniqueness of what they are doing so I hope it's something more shows continue to strive for in the future & to think out of the box with how to present a show.
