- The glorious honeymoon period has finally come to an end - my Porsche 911 996 has broken. The 996 is known for problems with its M96 engine - the most common being IMS bearing failure, bore scoring and D chunking. But this didn't happen to my car. Find out what went wrong in this video.

Matt looks to have aged significantly after acquiring the 996 : )
grand pa matt
Ola V He looks good for 44
Yup, just pulling his leg considering the vandalism and now the mechanical issues.
Yes having to pay the bills for an old 996 will do that you. If not than just compare the repair bills, insurance cost etc to the miles and calculate the running cost per mile. There you go.
Might have been a good idea to have the IMS bearing changed while they had the transmission out, or was that done too?
Hopefully you got a bumper to bumper warranty.
Jake Root, from CarMax with your unreliable Land Rover?
Le Leedler unreliable but its worth it . warranty paid all the maintainance cost
Syahmi Amin dirk diggler Have you ever watched Doug demuro?
Le Leedler yes . all the time
Did you do anything with the IMS bearing while you had it apart?
No IMS or RMS replacement while in there?
Jose Lopez really expected that as well!
What about the air vent, was it fixed?
The salesman looked like a thief. I remember he was saying, its a London car ...
Ask DougDeMuro about warranty
Robert Ri
bumper to bumper warranty from carmax.

UNLIMITED MILEAGE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY
you should have gone to Edd China..... imagine that vlog
I have a rattle down low at idle with the clutch up too, pushed in it goes away. Really prominent at drive ups where the sound bounces off walls. Does not sound quite like yours(more muted) and only when truly cold does 2nd gear grunch a little nor does the lever wobble in gear. Fingers crossed it is the DMF, as that was not replaced when previous owner did the clutch.
When the clutch out is out isn't that a good time to install one of the IMS fixes ?
Does anyone know if he already had the infamous IMS bearing replaced? that would have been the ideal time to do it
Did you replace the IMS bearing? If not, why?
Hey Matt. Love your vids about your Porsche. Keeping up with content.
Matt. Your videos are Great mate.. love it... been watching you since i stopped watching TopGear. Keep it up pal!
Hi i have just bought a 2015 Seat Ibiza which has a blown out rear speaker, and squeaky window. also the car pulls to the left, take it to an alignment place and they said Caster was out, are these all things the dealer can sort?
Great video-- Matt is the "Everyman" of car ownership, someone we can identify with and relate to. It helps that he's completely likeable and totally engaging. When he gets miffed, so do we. When he's happy, we come along for the ride. Personally, I find this blog series better than Car-Wow but I do understand you have to look after your employer first. More!
Get a room...
Ismael Tenenbaum It's true, he's totally cute, and I totally would. Poor straight people, missing out.
Hope all is resolved and she runs well for you now. I also started off my Porsche experience with a 996 Turbo 2 years ago and she broke my heart with all the silly little things that went wrong. Sold it a year later and upgraded to the 997 C4S which is a much better car inside out despite not having that turbo kick.
I hope they've checked out the IMS bearing or replaced that as well?
These cars, actually any car can be a nightmare, look forward to hearing the progress, hope it ends well Matt
cheers
does this car suffer from the IMS bearing failures? did you get a replacement bearing kit put in whilst the gearbox was out of the car?
How much was the gearbox fix?
I want a 996 4s but looking at what mat has gone through I will have to let my dream car stay in my dreams.
love your 911 my fav shape from the series
Yep, fixing the driver side air vent was the first job I completed, followed by new wheels, new wishbones and bushes all round, new air con rads, new rad, air con recommissioned, new trans oil pan, new anti roll bar and bushes, many oil leaks fixed, new maf, new aos and a new petrol cap. Now she's a beaut!
what kind of stabilization are you for your camera, Matt?
Wavetrac diff. Put that on my Civic FN2 when I had my clutch and 3rd gear syncros changed. Worth the money and best to do all at the same time. But had to pay for everything.
When you drop the clutch, etc. What about the IMS???
My 1.8 i-VTEC Honda Civic automatic 2006 has done over 146,000 and it's still on the original gearbox and engine and only just had its second battery from new, and my air on has never had an issue just a air con service from honda dealer every 2 years
Great stuff. I'm sure all the 911 owners will be trading them in for automatic Honda Civics now
@@k20ee96 They could, however, consider a Honda NSX. It's a credible rival to the 993 Porsche. :)
Haven't seen you do any more videos of this car, how has it been treating you? Love this car btw.
dude I really like your vids but that clickbait thumb was lame
If you were actually paying closer attention you would've noticed it just like I did.
If you thought that it looked real well that's really your problem
yeah you re right, it was dead easy to spot it from my mobile phone screen
no smoke, no Edvard Munch face anywhere in this video
Not with Arnold Clark, they grudged me getting the cup holder replaced due to it being broken, oh and the rear bumper clip which made the bumper stick out at the wheel arch slightly oh and the wheels needed re-conditioned, oh and one of the air vents. Took 6months in total for my bmw to be fixed while I done all the calling and middle man work. So don't buy or rely on Arnold Clark!
Mine makes that first sound, I've been ignoring it :B Which recirculation valve specifically was it?
Mine makes a similar sound to the 2nd but only when you shut it down without pushing the clutch in. It's the last sound the car makes when shutoff and goes away if the clutch is in. Always thought it was the DMF... Crud.
Awesome call on the diff, that's the only thing my car is really lacking right now! (well, aside from a mezger and maybe some gt3 LCAs)
It's your double sprung flange valve.
I envisaged many many problems from day one you both this car Mat
I had a similar linkage problem in a 964 Targa a few years ago. It gets progressively worse.
should have done the IMS upgrade and rear main seal while the box was out. sweet motor though chap :)
I've got a new Porsche 718 and it makes all sorts of noises like that, not always in tone with the engine, a lot of clunking from the gearbox (although it feels smooth) etc. I thought it was normal and now I'm worried about this sounds
why you had it tore apart.you should have done the ims bearing as well.
Had 2 911's ... a 996 and a 997. Never broke down. Very reliable! Bad luck i guess. Good luck!
Dutchman Nic Vegter Maybe they weren't blue
Sure that must be it! 😊
Woah - was it September! Time moves fast. Not having the best of luck so far although as you say, every cloud has a silver lining!
Am I the only one to notice that a vandal has entered Mat's Porsche and sprayed the interior a sort of diarrhoea brown? Bet it was the one who jumped on the roof. Bastard!
pete draper OEM colour "Suicide Savannah"
Oh, my mistake. Sorry.
pete draper Maybe Mat had a bad Chinese!
agrrr... "am I the only one" most anoing sentence ....
diarrhoea brown is exactly what I thought it looks sh##.
Is the differential upgrade worth it on this car?
The PSM acts as a simulated differential which works off the braking system so I thought it was unnecessary to upgrade to limited slip.
+Black Sheep my car has no psm nor tc. It's just me and my skills... Or lack of.
No IMS replacement while you were in there???
My first question
The thing that instantly springs to mind for me, when he's talking about old cars needing repairs all of the time, is how my 1999 Plymouth Neon, has had so few repairs and, save maybe brakes and transmission, Almost nothing problematic at all! 138,000 miles and counting...This car will survive the Apocalypse!!
One of the most common things you seem to see on a lot of private advertisements when people sell a Porsche is "just spent $X.... on a complete engine/gearbox rebuild".
I owned one in the 80s and was able to say the same thing when I sold it.
Don't be surprised about that 2nd gear. I already mentioned on the first video that you made about the Porsche, it has been used as a city car so it has been driving all time at low speed so second gear the most used one.
What kind of camera equipment are you using? The camera and stabilizer and stuff haha
second noise is very similar to my fiesta exhaust being loose.
With the second gear issue, it could have been the clutch.
I just changed the clutch in mine (ok, it's a Ford Focus, but still), because it didn't disengage properly when cold.
Same issue. Notchy second, but it didn't grind first or reverse, nothing else was bad, just second and sometimes first. The throwout bearing wasn't doing it's thing, but as the gearbox warmed up, tolerances increased and it was all good.
IMS Bearing replaced?
Are we going to see the supercharged MX5 anymore?
Hey Mat, always leave one problem unfixed coz if you fixed everything, something else would break ;P
Let's hope gearbox doesn't have to be removed again in future for the rms
I would of gone for a lightened single mass flywheel ;) but did they fix the vent?!
Very cool, nice one on the diff, have you tested it in anger? I am looking to get an lsd for my 997 but apart from importing a proper friction plate Guards from the US at an unknown but undoubtedly high cost, I wasn't aware of any options other than the quaifes. And my clutch is also weird :-/
+Pedro Venda wavetrack is like the quaife but still works even if one wheel has zero torque. And it works under engine braking too.
Thanks - I've also found that RPMtechnik put a wavetrac on their CSR, so that's another thumbs up.
Next mod: British-flavored LS3 swap ... those are becoming more common. The best part? Porsche and GM LS engines both use Bosch electronics, so it's more "plug and play" than you'd think. Engine failure despite a fixed IMS is becoming common with the 996, so that may be something you'd want to look into.
Manuel Carrillo III , what about a LS swap in a 04 BMW 530i?
Wait you got rid of the MX-5?
Any more updates on your 996 Matt?
Someone give this guy a promotion! He is very good at what he does!
hi mat, can u do a review on the nissan rogue?
My Dad's Boxster 987 had a ticking issue once, then we did the same thing as you and gave it to the specialist to drive for a week and they couldn't replicate the issue.
A friend of mine had the same problem with the engine. It broke down at a speed of 70 MPH. Lot s of problems with Porsche engines! Such an expensive car.
Wow, I'd fancied one of these. I think I'll stick with my CL500...
I been looking at buying a used 996, this video has really scared me!
I thought used 996 were pretty bullet proof?
Didn't do the IMS???? WHY? I just inherited my fathers' 2002 C4S. It has a little notch going into first and second but I'm not about to get it rebuilt just for that. Totally understand when it is under warranty tho..
There a pain to own, constant squeaks, rattles and problems............not worth the time and hassle
Matt - we need an update on your 996.1. It's been far too long!
Seems like a good company as they looked after you with it
Is the clutch, fly whel the noise...
I didn't need to have my clutch replaced until i hit 102,800 miles and it was a cheap fix, resurfaced the flywheel, new clutch, pressure plate and throw bearing and its all set, good for another 100,000 miles.
Can you please answer me Mat if you paid for the repairs at the dealer please,i would like to buy an used car too and i am worrying if is't sorth it or not?
Best regards,
Michael, Belgium
I almost bought the same generation Porsche, but decided on a used Miata instead. This video makes me feel so much better about my choice. I have had zero mechanical problems with the Miata, extremely reliable vehicle.
:? and not changed IMS & RMS :-O
Air conditioning won't turn on below a certain outside temperature. Gearboxes can be notchy until warm.
that dual mass flywheel is freaking costly btw and it is always changed with the clutch
I have a 1998 boxster ,in 2005 I did a 3.4L 996 engine swap at 60k. I never ever had a problem with the car. It has been solid. It looks new and drives new. Not sure why do people complain about these cars
Bummer! I avoided Porsche for these reasons. No such non sense
with Miata MX 5.
DMFs seem to wear on all cars, one of my Ford Smax's has a good DMf and clutch at 204000 miles, but the other one has vibration at 48000 miles
Update on this, the 204000 mile SMax is now 212000 miles, still same DMF and clutch etc, the other SMax 70000 miles, still exactly the same vibration, both totally reliable daily drivers for my wife and son, I have a BMW and that’s also totally reliable having covered 20000 miles since April
Any updates Mat? Has the Porsche been given the elbow..?
ticking noise sounds like a dodgey injector. as for oil issue you may have a leaky turbo seal from irregular back pressure. these are lovely cars but when they go wrong its game over. hope the issues aren't major.
2:30 in, have your A/C recharged and if needed swap the relay, easy fix. As for the knocking and the other ticking noise, spend more time learning to shift properly, 2nd and 3rd gear are very powerful and strong gears and should be treated with respect.
My car is very very tricky to put it in 2nd when the engine is still cold in the mornings, I sometimes leave it in 2nd till it warms up to avoid the struggle. I always thought that's how it was designed or something and it's normal, but watching this video, a chill ran down my spine... O.o what should i dooooo
if the crunch in the 'box goes away when it gets warm, it couldn't be synchromesh, it must be the oil. everything that doesn't change with the time isn't the oil and vice verso
0:43 lol the sound is normal, it sounds like a BMW M20 :D
the 3.4 engines in the 996 are prone to have issues. My dad's one had got a full rebuild which cost the previous owner £10k which got done only 6,000 miles ago which it's only done 44,000 miles
Nice colours - exterior & interior.
You have the best 996 color combo. Jelly and peanut butter :)
revs go up when you put the AC on, on any car I'm pretty sure.. atleast my 2 cars do.
+Anthony Cioce Yeah, that's me showing it's working - Mat
Beetles always sound rough
Pure German quality! 😂😂😂😂😂
Are you out of your mind?!
Better than UK quality ...
But the most important question, did they fix the vent ? :D
You Funny guy Matt, dealer did all work for you. Cool
dual mass flywheel clutch..very expensive
I'm glad it's all right now. As your radio is broken, why not update it with a model which has a touchscreen, maybe add a rear camera and such.
Carbuyer have really stepped up their game
So many ignorant comments. The ones that call the car garbage obviously never drove a 911 of any generation or a Porsche for that matter. Its his car and his money. Go drive your boring Camrys and Accords
marco correia did you watch this. ?? He's the owner and is reporting on its faults. (New gearbox clutch etc) major problems thousands of pounds .this is real not fictitious dick.
Japanese CAR'S happiness reliability and speaking of boring DRIVE Toyota Celica or Lexus lad and maybe Porsche will remember how build car's again, millennial television product parrot LOLOL
marco correia just listen to yourself.
I brought a 911 drove it for Three years .I enjoyed but it’s not the best car I’ve ever had .
I live in America and people hate everything other than American cars and it just gets on my f****** nerves I have a Porsche I've stuck a bunch of money into it but hey I like it I'm going to trade my Boxster for a 996 so I'm watching as many videos the damn car as I can so I know what I'm getting into and you're right these people should go drive their Camry are there Ford Focus they have no idea what it's like to drive a performance car cuz they're not into it so to them it's silly because they think that of a car as just transportation and that's it but it also can be a work of art a car for people who like to drive so I'm sick and tired of the naysayers as far as I'm concerned they could take their boring cars and drive them into a tree for all I care I'm sick and tired of people calling my car a piece of s*** just because I have to put money into it now and then f****** ignorant I think cars in my country suck they're big f****** boats everybody wants a big boat I don't get it not at all they brought back the Challenger and they made it even Lamer on the first one big heavy bulky heavy car what is the point of that
What a piece of garbage. Just throw it away and get yourself a really good car. Like Dacia Sandero
Alex Sardo Kia Picanto, mate. You can't go wrong with South Korean engineering, almost too hot to handle, just look at Samsung.
This is James May's secret RUclips account.
he cant afford a decent car. give him a break.
Alex Sardo I really hope that was a joke
I keep telling myself, "someday I'll have a Dacia Sandero, someday..."
that's usually the problem of owning a used car, we can't expect the problem, it could be worse. at least now we know the course of such sounds, not lucky enough ehh..
hi matt, been there done that experience many times because we can only afford to bought used car even on 3rd order but thats the deal of buying used car.soon it will be back in good condition.
Gearbox input shaft bearings notorious on the 996
