Great video. +carwow Mat is a great presenter. This is Realworld and believable not chock full of 000,000's supercars that mere mortals cannot afford. Thanks
Should of spent that money on a better car without the name £16000 could of got you a speedy BMW, Audi etc without these problems!! Look at how much he had to change to this car and the additional cost- that's going to go to the scrap uno! Many cars that are 10 - 18 years old are more reliable than this and he brought this car at 55,000 miles!!
UK roads are part of the problem, too many potholes and speed bumps. They play havoc on the suspension of cars, my daughter had the same problems with her Audi. Expensive business owning German cars.
love how you love your car :) we take for granted how amazing it is to zip around in these things ... i don't understand it when people don't love the cars they have.
Funny coincidence, the top mount on mine failed very similarly to how yours did, except mine were likely the original ones (150k mi old) and it didn't fail until after I upgraded to H&R coilovers. Not odd by any means, but it was a $600 part (both sides) I hoping to avoid. Great video. It's refreshing seeing your car is being treated right as I've seen many videos of less fortunate cars
Matt - I was just about to comment that it was the top mount, but I saw they found it. I had the exact same issue, sound etc. on my SEAT Leon Cupra 280. Turned out SEAT fit it wrong, which caused it to fray and become loose. You can also diagnose the same issue by opening the bonnet, putting lock on the steering wheel, and holding your fingers on the top mount. It will 'creak'.
Love your passion Matt. And so refreshing to see a video from a man with life experience (meant in a positive way obviously), rather than one of these rich young kids who car vlog, which you get all over RUclips.
Assuming it's your own money Mat, well done for having the guts to buy a 911 at this end of the market, magazines always recommending so good to see a real life test. Best of luck.
Glad the old girl is all sorted out.Was looking at a second hand 911 and Cayman.Went for a Audi TTs in the end.Love your interior really sets it off nicely 🍺
Mat, I must say that you are the very best carshow presenter in the entire world! You accent is quite hard to get for non-english native speakers but it's astonishing how funny and interesting you make such a common subject looks like!!! o/
My brace bars were in two pieces on both sides. These things rot like mad as they unprotected from the road salt etc.. and have holes inside of them which hold the road debri. You've spent a fortune on the car and then you buy second hand cross bars which are paramount to the handling of the car. Mine cost £200 for both including mounts and bolts from Porsche so not really bank braking compared to some trivial items.
Top man Mat. My '98 has a cracked head which has been repaired by Motorcast. I am in the process of rebuilding the m.96 in my garage :-) Plans are afoot to upgrade suspension over winter months. Thanks for your inspiration
carwow Yes had intermix both in oil and coolant. The oil cooler can be a suspect, but not sure this would affect both. I emailed Jake Raby in the US and he was 99% sure the head had cracked on Cyl1
Matt, you need to visit a place called Centre Gravity in atherstone, Warwickshire. They tweak the factory geometry and transform the car. They've done magic with my Cayman s, I was in awe of the car afterwards. A hearty recommendation
The rubber engine mounts are quieter for the street. The performance mounts will transmit more engine noise to the interior. Sacrifices Porsche makes to make the car more civil on the street.
There is fluid in the engine mounts which gets hard under vibration, that is why it moves a lot in your hands, nothing wrong with it Matt. Hydraulic engine monts work that way, they are fine like that. By the way, straight up called the problem of the noise, damper mount.
I have owned a 996.2 and I would not be bothered about replacing parts in the £100s as it's a real fun car to drive and starting to age well , the gen 2 lights are a lot better then the gen 1 fried egg ones though. However any 911 996-997.1 manufactured from 1998-2008 excluding (turbo & GT3) has a high chance of catastrophic engine failure , IMS people seem to say is the major problem but unfortunately scored bores are as common and d chunk . They reckon it's 5 % failure, but its not if but when in my opinion. I had scored cylinders on mine with low mileage and full service history , driven steady in till engine was warm and I'm a car guy. Either get a 993/964 or a gen 2 997, otherwise you could easily be looking at a 10k engine rebuild bill if the dice lands on you. Bloody pitty as I really liked the car. Porsche does get away with a lot that other manufacturers would be crucified.
Although it surely wasn’t cheap, I wish there was a repair shop like design 911 in my country. Those guys really look professional and seem to look after your precious Porsche no matter how old it is.
I was just wondering if I should buy a 2nd hand or Pcp or lease...after this series..lease it is..no tax no MOT just stick to the mileage rinse and recycle in 2/3 years..the hassle of owning any car with all the gizmos these days takes away from the joy of ownership
I wanted to buy a boxster. Then it turned out that the car is quite uncomfortable, expensive per labor hour, takes longer to fix than other cars, its parts are expensive.... and more. I decided I am too poor for a boxster. I love porsches, but I love top models too... and caviar.... and leather jackets... Yeah, im going back to reality, Ill get a mazda Mx5.
Wow, I don't know why it took trained mechanics so long to find this. The second I heard the noise I said "top mount". Low and behold, I get half way through the video, after they've pissed around with everything else, and its a top mount! With that kind of noise, over bumps, why is this not the FIRST thing they checked? So odd.
Sometimes noise can be tracked down using microphones and the principle of triangulation to find the source. We did it on an an aircraft that had a mystery noise that no one could track down.
Had a 1999 996 was great to drive but virtually every month something would fail, water coolant tank, water pump, fuel pump, radiators, ac condensers, exhaust, brake pipes, air oil separator, bits of trim, ignition switch, etc etc, was never perfect as soon as you fix one thing another would fail
Hey Matt. The problem was an upper mount of the suspension. I did notice you that you were also looking for metal in the oil filter. If there was metal you immediately thought of IMS. This is not true. The IMS is like any other part in the car, it is subject to failure. Yes there are those stories that the IMS blew up and destroyed the engine. I know quick a few 911 owners and none of them had a failure. But there are those who get it replaced “just in case”. The statistics don’t seem to add up to replacing a part that might fail. The research shows there is a very low incident of failure. Oh. Unless you get your info from those who make replacement bearing. Hey. Enjoy the car and stop making everything so grand, just get the those thing that break fixed.
thats the thing about Porsche 911, they are reasonably cheap to buy but you will be heading to the garage quite a lot. I have to take mine in every few months for one reason or another, but no other car in the price range can beat it which is why I keep mine.
Can't imagine that is serious... I thought it was a top shock mount. My Volvo had the same thing. We changed shocks and all sorts until we checked the top shock.
I put a reinforced complete clutch on my tuned Esprit. Good for 400hp! It was only 235 pounds! Even on a Dacia it cost more! It was so simple to do I could change it myself in one day, thanks to PNM for the clutch! These flattened Beatles are endless money pits and there are so many of it, no exclusivity, no thumbs up from people that I have been used to when driving my Lotus. No drivers car. It's boring to have a Porsche. Why people buy rubbish and boring cars?
I hate the 996. Somehow you've made me like it a bit more and even go as far as thinking of buying one to make similar mods. Must be mega to drive, just down on power and not good looking...
Disappointed you didnt mention how much the repairs cost ! After all we have all been there and it does make one feel better seeing someone else spit their Tea out when they read you that massive Bill...then they always like to add... plus VAT...for their added sick pleasure 😊!
That interior looks like an explosion in a custard factory. Utterly vile! For someone who makes a living out of ripping cars to bits, im really surprised.
Time to return it to stock and drive the wheels off it. Which probably isn't a a choice, since you've chosen to stiffen well everything! Down that road is of course "Track day car!"
Only a minor problem which you can expect on any car, especially at this age. Great choice of tyre as I also use these. However, as you are a car enthusiast and reviewer I'm surprised you love the 996. Lets be honest, it was built on a shoestring budget, has a nasty interior and a crap chassis balance. Is it all about the badge and euphoria of owning a 911?
Did you even check this car before buying it? What a nightmare (rotten suspension parts)! PS. Or maybe it is normal for the UK and your islandic climate there? I've heard some supposedly urban legends about stucking nuts, never had chance to verify that
They didn't check the topmount as one of the first things?? I mean, i'm not a mechanic, but from the sound you described, the top mount whould have been one of the first things to check. But that's more hours on the bill I guess. Come to think of it. - Why didn't you check it yourself Mat?... ;)
Should of spent that money on a better car without the name £16000 could of got you a speedy BMW, Audi etc without these problems!! Many cars that are 10 - 18 years old are more reliable than this and he brought this car at 55,000 miles!! Personally believe you should rent sport cars lool, the cost to maintain one isn't worth it unless you rich and have money to burn. Those repairs must of cost 3000+ including the other modifications he has made to this car lol! Thank you for sharing these videos Mat, they are informative
The first mods you should do is suspension and tyres and wheels and brakes. You'll end up beating everyone else on the road. Even if they have a good bit of horse power on you.
The roads around you must be better than around here the top mount bushes go on cars around here due to potholes and council speed reduction humps in general absolutely crap roads.
Hey Carwow and Mat, there is one serious problem with the vlogs - there are too few of them
Oh god no, an ocasional vlog is fine but I have channels that move to a really vloggy format. It ruins the whole channel.
That mustard colour interior takes some getting used to!
It is truly heinous 😂
I couldn't live with that colour.
I love it
Great video. +carwow Mat is a great presenter. This is Realworld and believable not chock full of 000,000's supercars that mere mortals cannot afford. Thanks
I don't understand some of the neg comments here. It's an 18 year old sports car for goodness sake! I think it's doing really well.
+1. .. Agreed. .. The 996 coupe is getting on in years. .. Signed, The Original Owner of a 20yr old '98 911 993 S coupe.

Come to Syria mate 😂
or Istanbul :S
or Nepal for that matter ;)
love how you love your car :) we take for granted how amazing it is to zip around in these things ... i don't understand it when people don't love the cars they have.
design 911 guys are probably like... "here comes that knob with the camera again"
Ruhul Amin hes snitch
The owner will be happy though it's a great advertisement.
Fuck the owner though, he's already making a bank, the average joe working there has to deal with the this guy.
Why do you watch his videos if you don’t like him so much then?? Are you not bothered by how rude you are?
NO STUPID ASSHOLE ITS FREE PUBLICITY RUHUL YOU'RE ASS IS SO WIDE OPEN AHAHAHA FUCKING IDIOT
Funny coincidence, the top mount on mine failed very similarly to how yours did, except mine were likely the original ones (150k mi old) and it didn't fail until after I upgraded to H&R coilovers.
Not odd by any means, but it was a $600 part (both sides) I hoping to avoid.

LOL stiff engine mount will destroy his gear box next.
Love how you love your car Mat. So genuine. 👍
Geez, that top mount... 😁 I would have replaced the other side too💥
Mat 😂😂😂😂
U r the best 🤙🏻
Assuming it's your own money Mat, well done for having the guts to buy a 911 at this end of the market, magazines always recommending so good to see a real life test. Best of luck.
Glad the old girl is all sorted out.Was looking at a second hand 911 and Cayman.Went for a Audi TTs in the end.Love your interior really sets it off nicely 🍺
Lovely classic 911 and hopefully it will bring you loads of fun again - could already see it in your eyes 😀👌

More blogs Matt ! lol glad you found out what was wrong with it . Lovely car mate
One of lifes joys is getting your old car sorted
Really enjoy your 911 updates Matt!
Top man Mat. My '98 has a cracked head which has been repaired by Motorcast. I am in the process of rebuilding the m.96 in my garage :-) Plans are afoot to upgrade suspension over winter months. Thanks for your inspiration
+Rage Video did you inspect your IMS?
+Rage Video also how did you know about the cracked head? Intermixed?
carwow I am inclined to leave it as is. Seen no evidence of metal debris in oil or sump pan. I may fit a magnetic sump plug ...am i tempting fate ?
carwow Yes had intermix both in oil and coolant. The oil cooler can be a suspect, but not sure this would affect both. I emailed Jake Raby in the US and he was 99% sure the head had cracked on Cyl1
+Rage Video I'm with you. Best left alone. And hope!
nothing better than driving off in your car after having bits fixed and everything working nicely fully serviced
Great upload!!! Back to basics 👍 Keep em coming.
They way he goes he loves this car at the end is too funny!

That’s what happens when you buy from a stealer I mean dealer
Adam Chase bruh it was aftermarket
Adam Chase Hardly... Private bought cars are not immune to problems...
Its an old car ...
He never said how much the bill was I wouldn't like to take a guess 😬
Great to see your Porsche repaired and back on the road, excellent classic car
I jusr came to this channel, and i love it. You gained a subscriber.
1:54 minutes: "should be safe for now"--lol! Welcome to the 996 world 😂
Everbody talks about IMS but no one talks about air-cooled chains
cause aircooled guys wan to hide the defects with there vehicles lol... i see far more aircooled being fixed in Porsche shops then water cooled haha.
Probably because they're a lot older!
You don't know what you are talking about....I've driven a 996 for many years.....no issues.
Oil filter is fine so "you should be fine....for now". Love that! IMS! Not if, but when :P
Love these vlogs👍🏻

I didn't know mat makes vlogs lol another reason for me to keep on watching carwow ;)
Best car reviewer on RUclips.
Great to see a more personal video about the car (one of) you actually own.
Although it surely wasn’t cheap, I wish there was a repair shop like design 911 in my country. Those guys really look professional and seem to look after your precious Porsche no matter how old it is.
Lot of work done but the end result is a cracking performance car 😉🍺
I was just wondering if I should buy a 2nd hand or Pcp or lease...after this series..lease it is..no tax no MOT just stick to the mileage rinse and recycle in 2/3 years..the hassle of owning any car with all the gizmos these days takes away from the joy of ownership
That white Porsche in the gaage with red wheels is sweet!
It's honestly so cute how much he loves cars
That's a great shop! This car is good for another 2 years!
Loving your enthusiasm 👍
I wanted to buy a boxster.
Then it turned out that the car is quite uncomfortable, expensive per labor hour, takes longer to fix than other cars, its parts are expensive.... and more.
I decided I am too poor for a boxster.
I love porsches, but I love top models too... and caviar.... and leather jackets...
Yeah, im going back to reality, Ill get a mazda Mx5.
Best choice. Same fun and money left for holiday, drugs and sluts. Perfect car!
Calling out the AA because there's a knocking noise from the suspension?
😂😂
Alcoholics Anonymous?
We love this 911 car, please continue to make more videos about it.
Wow, I don't know why it took trained mechanics so long to find this. The second I heard the noise I said "top mount". Low and behold, I get half way through the video, after they've pissed around with everything else, and its a top mount! Awesome loved this vid , lovely 911 which is actually abtainible , less 50 to 60k and plus cars but more of this please thanks
I would have bounced the car first off, maybe mount over tightened when fitted damaging the rubber.
Love these vids of your 911..keep em coming 😀
The correct term would be part failure!
Part failures should be picked up or prevented on servicing and MOT’s!
We know Matt is only demonstrating the fact that owning an old luxury car is a journey of discovery one part and keeping up maintenance the other
Sometimes noise can be tracked down using microphones and the principle of triangulation to find the source. We did it on an an aircraft that had a mystery noise that no one could track down.
One things for sure, your gonna have a problem selling this car onn, these vloges are better than any crash history checkers 😁
Matt, uprating those engine mounts may aggravate the IMS bearing.... would consider getting the upgraded lubricated IMS kit.
Ford: Built Tough
Porsche: Built as tough as our CEO

Had a similar sound before I replaced the anti-roll bar drop links in my SW20, and the shocks. lol
I like this, video with more personality. Nice.
thats the thing about Porsche 911, they are reasonably cheap to buy but you will be heading to the garage quite a lot. I have to take mine in every few months for one reason or another, but no other car in the price range can beat it which is why I keep mine.
Best tyres. Love them. Wish they made them in 20 inches. Great at track and road.
Can't imagine that is serious... I thought it was a top shock mount. My Volvo had the same thing. We changed shocks and all sorts until we checked the top shock.

This is great! More of this please!!
Like they eventually did, if you can recreate the problem in a real way that is the best way to figure it out.
Hi Matt, best to sell it and get an earlier 911 (air cooled). 964 or 993 will be much better.
Great video! Should have bought a 997 though..
Meyle top strut mount: you're good to go for another 10,000 miles.
Disappointed you didnt mention how much the repairs cost ! After all we have all been there and it does make one feel better seeing someone else spit their Tea out when they read you that massive Bill...then they always like to add... plus VAT...for their added sick pleasure 😊!

nice to see you smiling....
What about your xc60 ?
the xc60 is a loan car from volvo for a review im assuming , the porsche is his personal car
cory x British But in a video he said that it would be his new volvo xc60 !
hama king he has it on loan for 6 months I believe, it's a press car (the Volvo)
95% of Volvo's are driven by women and that's fine but they are sonewhat emasculating.
So you mean that 95:5 Volvo drivers are women? You must be some butthurt bmw fan or something. Like really? 95:5?
Great video. Can you provide a link to the engine mounts?
Heh, the moment he said it wasn't the anti-roll bar I called top mount :) Had the same on a set of coilovers once.
How much was the bill, approximately?
Simply German TOP class reliability! Honda and Toyota eat German shorts!
Said no one ever
Are you kidding me? Toyota and Lexus have bomb proof reliability and this is known across the entire auto industry and plenty of mainstream consumers
people who truly have experience owning cars say that not fanboys who can't afford a car
Do everyone a favour and fck off with yours stupid generalizations.
The only thing that fucks off is the money inside your wallet. I won't pay another cent to overpaid Sauerkraut sausage eating Franz
IMS Bearing, 'Should be safe for now' Oh Shite! :(
Brought my front shocks of Design911 and was very impressed with the price. 🖒
when i heard the noise i said top mount lol. So design911 fitted the suspension and left the topmost loose...
Mechanic says "never seen that before" 😂bollocks !!. A damaged top mount ? What have you been living in a cave ?😂
You are Almost certainly right!
Surely they would have bounced the car first off, looks like top mounts been overtightened squashing the rubber bush?
Where is the "bumper to bumper" warranty?
Only a minor problem which you can expect on any car, especially at this age. Great choice of tyre as I also use these. However, as you are a car enthusiast and reviewer I'm surprised you love the 996. Lets be honest, it was built on a shoestring budget, has a nasty interior and a crap chassis balance. Good to see all your car issue solved. I wonder how much this cost Matt? Anyone shed any light on costs and prices? Cheers
When are you changing the interior to a nice light grey leather? That would go nicely with the exterior blue paintwork.
The underneath could do with a steam clean then a spray with a protective oil.
The engine bay too.
Good lord Mat!! That sounds like my Volvo before I replaced the upper spring seats and shock mounts!!
Well then.... o.o I'm surprised at my guess.
Thanks for uploading, very interesting
Hope they give a job on top gear mat, you'd be great.
Look at how much he had to change to this car and the additional cost- that's going to go to the scrap uno! Many cars that are 10 - 18 years old are more reliable than this and he brought this car at 55,000 miles!! Personally believe you should rent sport cars lool, the cost to maintain one isn't worth it unless you rich and have money to burn. Those repairs must of cost 3000+ including the other modifications he has made to this car lol! Thank you for sharing these videos Mat, they are informative
Geeze Mat you must have spent another 16K on that car already!
The first mods you should do is suspension and tyres and wheels and brakes. You'll end up beating everyone else on the road. Even if they have a good bit of horse power on you.
Hey Mat now youve done some mods and repairs whens the new performance exhaust being fitted you were on about when you first bought it remember?
He had a 200 buck alteration to it that improved the sound experience.
The roads around you must be better than around here the top mount bushes go on cars around here due to potholes and council speed reduction humps in general absolutely crap roads.
