My instructor only taught me the 90-degree method, but after I passed the driving test, I found that the 45-degree method is more practical because someone behind you may steal your spot while you are lining up with the reference. However, I have discovered that in some situations, you need to use the 90-degree method or an angle larger than 45 degrees if you drive a big car in a tight parking space. There simply isn't enough space to use the 45-degree method. Therefore, both methods are useful and should be taught. To make this video more helpful, you should teach students how to adjust if they get the angle wrong or are about to hit the car to their right, for example, by doing a right full lock forward and a left full lock reverse. Btw it's the same for parallel parking. Real life is different from the exam
Real life parking is so much less stressful than the test thank goodness! I usually use 45 degree method for reverse bay barking and imagine I’m turning into a road when forward bay parking! But if 45 degrees is impossible to do, I do 90 but if avoidable, I don’t do it! Great content as always Francis you legend - keep it up! Hope that your well!
I started doing this method to park at work only a few weeks after passing my test as the carpark is almost always very busy and I was forced to park between cars. Doing the 90° method I was taught I realised how much it confused other drivers and also how difficult it was to park between two cars as I couldn't see the guidelines my instructor taught me to look for as easily. The more of these kinds of video I watch, the more I realise my instructor taught me how to pass my test, not how to drive in real life
I have almost never used the 90 degree method since passing. Relies too much on reference points that always change rather than spacial awareness I found. "Drive 3 bay lines on from the space..." My driveway doesn't have bay lines!
Love Yr videos I really wish I had you for my instructor, but unfortunately I passed in March this year. I find these videos helpful as a new driver it was a struggle to park bay and parallel. Getting better and gaining confidence in the real world of being a real driver.
I was taught 90 degree method but shown 45 degree method on 1 lesson and told by my instructor this is the method most people use after passing. Now I use 45 degree method or find back to back empty bays and drive in forwards through both bays so can drive out forwards 😊
Spot on, the same technique I always use for a single space after many years........I will also 'dive' in and swing out of a bunch of empty spaces to reverse park as it saves a few seconds
Hi, I’m a recently qualified Adi and I found this method to teach makes more sense so I scrapped the 90 degree which I was taught 20 plus years ago lol, and I just teach them exactly what I would do, it’s that simple really.
It was so funny because my cousin taught me in 7 seconds how to reverse bay park using this method when I used to struggle with it on my lessons using the 'align yourself 2 bays ahead of where you need to be -> full lock right/left' method
Love love love this. So many instructors think it has to be done at 90 for the test. This needs to get out there. There are so many instructors that think lots of things are needed on test that aren’t and as such teach Way OTT. Ask your instructor if that’s the way they do it IRL. If not why do they teach like that?
I told my instructor the same thing when I was taught the "90 degree method". The instructor told me to understand the mechanics behind it and apply it. Which I broke it down to making sure the rear end of the car faces the space you want to park in to and having good spatial awareness - understanding what you are seeing in the mirrors and where the car is in relation to the environment.
I was originally taught the 90 degree method, but really couldn’t understand how it would make sense to use in real life. Think it’s great that you shared the 45 degree method with viewers, as it feels more practical to use in a busier car park! (Also, as you start the manoeuvre closer to the bay you want with this method, it prevents other drivers from stealing your bay as you’re doing it 😂)
The only time it's useful is you're looking for the space and spot someone leaving and drive past so they can get out. They bock traffic in the direction they go oe slow them down then you reverse in. As long as no idiot pulls through you're good
@snipesjuanr7762 yes 45 is easier but if someone is about to leave you sometimes have to drive past so that they can leave the space. It's no use blocking them in as you need the space and they need to leave. It doesn't matter if you do 45 or 90 both start going into the space at the same 45 or more angle .
I am learning and I am learning the same way as you taught before. I was always confused why no one else uses it in real life and I wanted to know this way so thank you
I've been driving for 20 years, I can't remember the EXACT method I was taught, but I vaguely recall something about lining up my wing/door mirror with the bay line one bay further from the one I was aiming for? But... in the end, Pretty much the way you did it here actually...and that's how I park perfectly to this day 😂😂😂
Completely agree, I tend to avoid reverse parking into a bay if I can for this reason, I must admit I don't think I've once had to reverse into a bay since passing my test 2.5years ago but if I do have a go it's always using the 45 degree method.
I always teach this method, it's practical and WAY easier regardless. I always call it "framing your bay in your mirror" soon as you take that sharp turn you can see it! Boom. ❤
My instructor only taught me the 90° way, and it was the first thing I ditched when I passed my test. It’s not just more practical to do the 45° method (especially if your first car is a pretty long Mondeo), but it’s easier to judge and manoeuvre. There’s so much more leeway to manoeuvre, which means I can get into the space nice and efficiently, and nobody else is held up while I faff around. It’s a win for everyone. Just angle the car and whack it in! Can’t go wrong.
I teach both. It's helpful for new students to use the 321 method until they can understand how to make the car go where they want it to go. And Some people need the reference points of 321 method on their test cos of nerves. But I always teach 45 degree as well and make them park between two park cars before test 😊
My instructor thought me the 90 degree method. But when I was practicing on my Brother's car. And I did that method. He complained saying that in real life situation. Specially on packed and tiny bay car parks. You cannot do that 90 degree method. That's why he showed me the, go as near as you can to the bay you want, align yourself on the bay you want, as if you are in the middle of that bay . Then full lock to do the 45 degree angle then check mirrors and reverse back. As for me, I prefer to reverse park on the bay on the right. This is because with the side mirror nearest to me. It is easier to see the bay lines hahaha. (and I adjust the mirror down if needed.) And ever since then I use the same method and always do a reverse park. Even at home into the drive way. This makes it easier to drive out once you are ready to drive off.
Great video as always. I think it’s fine to teach the 90 degree method for their test but it’s also important to teach real/life practical methods too after they pass their test. Can you please make a similar video for parallel parking where the space is limited and the road is narrow?
I prefer the 90degree method but found I need to start further away from bay than instructor taught me so then I dnt cross other bays but do think longer cars would have issues in narrow car parks think both methods should be taught
I was taught 90 and have struggled to reverse park trying the 45 by myself. I get embarrassed and give up. I always forward park which is a nightmare between 2 vehicles if the there isn't much room to adjust. We apologise for giving you a hard time on TT 😂😂😂❤
Haha, it's always at a Sainsbury's car park. My instructor used to take me to one as well. I can't remember whether I was taught the 90 or 45 degree method, but there were definitely some numbers involved. I do remember being told repeatedly to keep looking in my side mirrors, or I would"clip the other car".
Parrell parking and parking in car park spaces was an option in the early 90s after passing the test I done with a motorway lesson did some parking in a multi storey carpark .
It's much easier to park in between two cars than an empty space imo. Without lowing the mirrors I can never see the lines in the mirror but can with the cars. I don't tend to use the mirrors though and physically look behind to see when I'm past the car before I start to straighten up. Reversing to the right is a bit easier for me as you can see the lines better.
Whether I reverse park a car or an artic lorry, I’ll always do the 45 degree prep. With a car I identify the bay then position my car at 45 degrees and then reverse in, guiding it in. With an artic I see the bay, full lock left, get the trailer 45 degrees, full lock right get the head 90 degrees to the bay, straighten the wheels and then reverse in. As the trailer straightens up with the bay, slowly decrease the angle of the head and eventually I’m in. But as I said, for both car and artic lorry, 45 degrees. If there’s not enough space to facilitate a 2-move reverse for the lorry I’ll just improvise. But for cars there’s always space to do the 45-er.
You just answered my thoughts with my instructor, was shown the 90° version and even then I was thinking that's not real world though, Currently doing ADI part 2, on my test I'll be doing the 45° version as it has less room for error.
I passed my ADI Part 2 today with 2 faults! Your videos really helped to get through it, thank you so much, so glad it's done and over.. Bring on the part 3.
Started using this method since yesterday.. after a crappy asdas parking 😂😂😂😂😂😂 i dnt get why instructors teach the other one but respect for owning up to your mistake 😅😅
I passed my test thirty years ago and i was never taught how to do either ,the day after i passed my test i drove to Blackpool on the motorway , no problem and couldn't park the car 😂
I been waiting for a video like this. I passed in Jan but avoid reverse parking or going to places where parking is mad busy cos I'm terrified I'll smack someones car.
I realised after passing my test that all forward and reverse bay parks were always with no other cars around. So I passed having never parked beside/between cars! I’m now considering a parking lesson but can forwards bay park fine and reverse but can take me a few adjustments with reverse. Not parallel parked since before my test so aware I need to sort that too. So much you realise you didn’t cover after passing, my first challenge was to learn how to park up my drive on a slope and I’ve perfected that so I’ll perfectly parking too in time.
I was looking for this type of video because i was thinking about the parking manoeuvres taught arent that useful, even for parallel parking we are taught a method to park in a MASSIVE space, which isnt realistic at all, could you also show us how to parallel park in a smaller space, im thinking its just a tighter intial turn but still it would be helpful!
My instructor taught me to line up with the third white line in the middle of my window and then reverse and full lock the wheel… no angles or degrees involved😅😅
Hi mate. 👋 Is it ok to wait on a no stopping bus stop clearway with a wide yellow line along the kerb of the bus stop while in a stationary queue of traffic?
Yep I’m currently being taught the 90 degree method…. I’m literally being taught to pass my test! This is my concern when I pass that I won’t be able to park in a busy car park
Was taught the 3 bays with a reference point. Have discovered this doesn't work, and usually forward park. In fact have discovered that not being taught to reverse round corners where there isn't a reference point is causing me issues, and also reversing up a hill (loads of them where I live). Plus you are not taught to use your mirrors with reversing so much to get througb the test.
I learned to park using the 90° method, but with a car that could do that between cars without issue. I was really struggling when driving a different car after getting my licence
I was taught the 3 line method too. My next lesson I'm going to use the irl method to do it. I spent years illegally driving doing the irl method so I'm just going to do this one from now on 😂 at least I know how to do it and I'm less likely to f it up 😅
ngl after i passed my test i used that 90° method irl between two parked cars everytime i went to work and always got it in perfect but it was so annoying going 2 or 3 bays up ahead just to park, so i figured out how to do 45° and never looked back lol
I was teached the 90 degree method and haven't used it once since passing. The problem with the 90 degree is you always move away from the bay giving someone else the impression you have passed it. It's more difficult to learn from car to car in my learning experience I drove 5 cars in almost two years. The 45 degree method just makes sense and the 90 degree should just be removing from learning.
Taught the 90° method and i always say it's not practical in real life. I havent passed yet. I think i have a phobia for parking btw 2 cars. (Forward bay or reverse). I have to look for 2 spaces so i can park. Pls make a video on how to make adjustments if you are getting too close to the car on the right or left.
I’m an instructor and I teach the way you’re demonstrating. I found it easier to teach and the students pick it up more easily. The other method is awful and many of my pupils couldn’t do it
I passed first time recently and I can honestly say I really struggle with parking in general. I was taught how to park to pass the test and i aced it but not how to actually park irl.
Are you aware of the new address of mitcham test route from Tuesday? i gotten in my email other day on Friday afternoon. 101 waddon way Purley way😮 Talk about Last minute.😅 i be nervous when reversing because making certain of parking accuracy and this important observation. My test is next month in September 20th.
I use both 45 degree and 90 degree method. Neither method was taught by my instructor. I was taught the forward bay park, that’s it. After I passed my test, a family member taught me how to reverse park
My instructor has taught me the 90 degree method but told me to come into the middle of the lane before reversing, to avoid cutting the space next to the one im parking in. I end up reversing straight back for longer, rather than straighening up at the last second.
What's even worse about this part of the test You can cross the lines in the car test You are not allowed to cross the lines on the motorcycle Mod 1 test, where you have to by hand, back your motorcycle out of a marked bay, and then reverse it into an adjacent bay, hitting the cones that mark the "lines" of the parking bay will automatically fail you. It's strange how out of sync the tests are in that regard, not sure what it's like for other vehicle tests in regards to parking.
In my driving lessons i was taught the three line method with dots on the window which showerd you where to line up in , in my test i got reverse bay parking and was great at it however now that ive passed i refuse because i have zero clue how to line it up or where and result to driving aeound the car park looking for somehwefe i can forward bay 😔😔
I do 45 degrees all the time I find it better as it clearly marks your bay if you do 90 degrees someone behind you can always come and steal your bay while trying to park using the 90 degrees method and if you inly have one bay I find it almost impossible to judge if you use 90 degrees method
when i started driving 2 months ago, i asked the instructor instantly why do they teach this method, and he replied that its just because so that everyone can do it on their test easily... still, i passed my test a week ago, parked reverse bay a few times already but never used that 90° method, its just useless
I was taught the 90 degrees couldnt get the hand of it, it was basically a 50/50 gamble if i would get in the bay. but had my own car, and realised when practising alone that just using mirrors was way easier, I passed using the 45° method. Examiners don't care at all 😅
i was taught the 90 degree method by my instructor however my partner taught me how to do the 45 degree reverse parking and the latter is soooo much easier, i always struggled with the 90 degree. I always reverse park by the 45 degrees method
Just a small point at 1:44 you say flick it out 90 degrees, where you should have said 45. Personally I use the 45 degree method, but there are plenty of occasions when I've had to reverse it from 90 degrees, also it's much easier to reverse between cars than empty bays
I was always taught 90 degree parking and I see nobody do it I have been driving nearly a year and not reversed parked lol I need to try this method it looks way easier
During my lessons, we did the 90 degree method and after the second lesson doing this we switched to the proper one as it worked better and the 90 degree one just didnt work for me
I'm a little bit confused. Are you saying that if you use the 45 degree method during your test you will automatically fail? That you can only use the 90 degree method in a test. Because I've been taught both methods by 2 different instructors, and tend to use the 45 way most of the time.
I struggle parking when all the bays are empty. I park better when a car is on each side. The cars make me more aware of the space and where I’m aiming for
I've no idea how I was taught but it wasn't very well because it's been 13 years and I have never reverse parked in all that time. I also don't even forward park unless the bay next to me is also free
Luckily my driving instructor showed me the correct way that also works in real life while cars are parked next to your chosen bay. He said he is teaching me that way because in real life you don't always find empty parking spot that has no cars parked around you
"I flick it out,and I bang it in." That made me giggle.
Confessions of a Driving Instructor, eh!? ;-D
It’s amazing! And commentary every single time as always legend! 😊🫶
That burnt orange cars parking looking shocking on the drone shot mind 😂
Lmaoooo i was literally about to comment that 😂😂😂
My first thought when I saw that orange car was how similar it is to my parking.
@@delphihaze1317 haha
I got an Orange Clio like that one.

Slick parking though… the 90 degree is stupiddddddd

Superb one! Could you show me how to park in a corner slot? I find it really difficult
This would definitely still work in an end bay or corner slot. steer to 45 degrees at the second line like this still.

I learned to park using the 90° method, but with a car that could do that between cars without issue. I was really struggling when driving a different car after getting my licence
I was taught the 3 line method too. My next lesson I'm going to use the irl method to do it. I spent years illegally driving doing the irl method so I'm just going to do this one from now on 😂 at least I know how to do it and I'm less likely to f it up 😅
🤣 love the honesty haha
@@DrivingSchoolTV 🤷🏻♀️😁
ngl after i passed my test i used that 90° method irl between two parked cars everytime i went to work and always got it in perfect but it was so annoying going 2 or 3 bays up ahead just to park, so i figured out how to do 45° and never looked back lol
Hi do you know eye test how many steps??
I've not passed my test yet, but my husband actually taught me this method and I find it the easiest way 👍🏻
I’m an instructor and I teach the way you’re demonstrating. I found it easier to teach and the students pick it up more easily. The other method is awful and many of my pupils couldn’t do it
I passed first time recently and I can honestly say I really struggle with parking in general. I was taught how to park to pass the test and i aced it but not how to actually park irl.
Just passed with 3 minors thanks for the help, still watching
He is absolutely right!
Are you aware of the new address of mitcham test route from Tuesday? i gotten in my email other day on Friday afternoon.
101 waddon way
Purley way😮
Talk about Last minute.😅
i be nervous when reversing because making certain of parking accuracy and this important observation.
My test is next month in September 20th.
Best of luck on your test , just keep watching videos with your lessons and you will be fine
you got this!! it's only down the road and the routes will be largely the same. just a different starting place. don't stress about it 😊
I was today years old when I learned this... been driving post-test for over a year and the 90-degree method was all I knew how to do 😭
Wish I had known this method on my first driving test, the car park I was taken to was packed. This would've made things a lot easier.
the best driver and fast parking
I use both 45 degree and 90 degree method. Neither method was taught by my instructor. I was taught the forward bay park, that’s it. After I passed my test, a family member taught me how to reverse park
Dog kennel hill Sainsbury's,- almost every driving instructors car park of choice for manoeuvres 🤣
I've passed my test and I use the 45 degree method. I find I need to put both wing mirrors down so I can see the lines properly.
My instructor has taught me the 90 degree method but told me to come into the middle of the lane before reversing, to avoid cutting the space next to the one im parking in. I end up reversing straight back for longer, rather than straighening up at the last second.
What's even worse about this part of the test
You can cross the lines in the car test
You are not allowed to cross the lines on the motorcycle Mod 1 test, where you have to by hand, back your motorcycle out of a marked bay, and then reverse it into an adjacent bay, hitting the cones that mark the "lines" of the parking bay will automatically fail you.
It's strange how out of sync the tests are in that regard, not sure what it's like for other vehicle tests in regards to parking.
My ORDIT trainer showed me that '90 degree' method and I never used it with a single pupil, not even on my pink badge.
I've always taught my pupils the 45° method, they find it so easy especially in between 2 cars
I passed my test so long ago this wasnt even a thing! We had to teach ourselves😆
I did that three bay method on my test but as soon as I passed I flick it 90° so much easier
when i started driving 2 months ago, i asked the instructor instantly why do they teach this method, and he replied that its just because so that everyone can do it on their test easily... still, i passed my test a week ago, parked reverse bay a few times already but never used that 90° method, its just useless
yeah i was taught the 90 degrees way and was so confused because i was like if there was a car here i would hit it?
You can use both methods in real life.. and both work. If you're to close you will cross the lanes.
Suppose to indicate stop look all around pull forward then check again and then proceed
In Vietnam, we learn same the way he teaches in this video.
I could not for the life of me reverse Bay Park after passing my test and had to spend a day practicing to actually park like an actual civilian💀
I passed 3 weeks ago, I had reverse bay park and done the 45 degree angle! So much easier and quicker
Just a small point at 1:44 you say flick it out 90 degrees, where you should have said 45.
Personally I use the 45 degree method, but there are plenty of occasions when I've had to reverse it from 90 degrees, also it's much easier to reverse between cars than empty bays
hah thanks! i didn't notice that until just now 🤦♂️ hope everyone knows what i meant
I been teaching my self this method and the 45 degree as didn't do it on my lessons when learning
I was always taught 90 degree parking and I see nobody do it I have been driving nearly a year and not reversed parked lol I need to try this method it looks way easier
During my lessons, we did the 90 degree method and after the second lesson doing this we switched to the proper one as it worked better and the 90 degree one just didnt work for me
Which method we should use for first and last parking spot?
This would still work! just steer to 45 when you're at the second line of your bay 😊
I'm a little bit confused. Are you saying that if you use the 45 degree method during your test you will automatically fail? That you can only use the 90 degree method in a test. Because I've been taught both methods by 2 different instructors, and tend to use the 45 way most of the time.
Nooo it doesn't matter what method you use on your test. you just have to end up within the lines and do great observation 😊
Thanks. I have to say that the 45 degree method feels more natural.
I struggle parking when all the bays are empty. I park better when a car is on each side. The cars make me more aware of the space and where I’m aiming for
I think this is true for everyone. It’s the same with parallel parking as well. Much easier to have references.
You parked differently here than the video in the tiktok. You ate a lot of space in tiktok.
My driving instructor uses the 90 degrees way, passed my test and that was my manoeuvre, they said I smashed it
So can we use 45 degree parking in the test?
I've no idea how I was taught but it wasn't very well because it's been 13 years and I have never reverse parked in all that time. I also don't even forward park unless the bay next to me is also free
How do you go shopping?? park at the back?
@@DrivingSchoolTVI shop at a tesco extra superstore and there's always tons of spaces
Now do parallel parking between two cars.
Luckily my driving instructor showed me the correct way that also works in real life while cars are parked next to your chosen bay. He said he is teaching me that way because in real life you don't always find empty parking spot that has no cars parked around you
great video
The 45 degree method is what we are taught here in Sweden.
