    I'm so glad I made the change from acrylic to PTEG. Acrylic tubing is just a nightmare to deal with. Everytime I swung my hammer in my system, the tubes would just shatter and water would splash everywhere ruining my components. Now since I switched to PTEG, I can swing my hammer all i want and the only thing that happens is the tube changes to an oblong shape.

      JamesHD1990 But harder to work with in some ways. I've never heard of Acrylic shattering inside a build, but I have seen people fail multiple times to get acrylic routing right, which takes time in the build process. For a personal pet project, time is free, but if you're doing it for a job, I'd rather do it the slightly faster and easier way.

    First ever RUclips post but I thought I would add my 2Cents, lol. From what I have read PETG has a max temp of 65C to 70C (149F to 158F) Whereas acrylic is 70C (158F) with short time maximum of 90C (194F). I know the temps are close but my mitx build runs about 75C -78C (167F-172F) under full load due to overclocking. Also, acrylic has a light transmission of 92% where PETg is 88%, does that not make acrylic clearer, ie more translucent?

    Fast forward to 2021... where no one major water cool company likes PETG because it can't handle high processor heat. (Except Thermaltake.)

  • @HotboiEngineering
    @HotboiEngineering 8 лет назад +6

    Jay that's honestly really dumb testing the acrylic by dunking it into water while it's still hot, that's deliberately compromising it's structure. I can see you were trying to prove a point about the cracking, but I can make even metal crack by heating up and cooling it down rapidly, heck when I was learning how to weld I fucked up by dunking it into water real quick and cracking the welds. Want strong acrylic? When you heat it up, after you bend it put it in the oven so the whole thing cools at a slower rate and gives the molecules time to align and reform. It takes extra 15 minutes maybe, buts it's stronger than PETG at that point and you will be rewarded with better clarity and a more uniform texture.
    As for cutting and de-burring, get finer blades or sharper blades and it will cut better. I sharpen my tools before I de-burr, and the tools I use are designed for really soft woods and plastics as they have to be super sharp to get a clean chip forming and a smooth cut, they are the same price as normal de-burring tools. I also bought super fine hacksaw blades from the hardware store (absolutely 0 extra expenses compared to normal hacksaw blades from Primo Chill or any other company) and they work amazing, again as they are designed for brittle plastics and soft woods. More TPI (Teeth per inch) means finer cuts and less material taken off per cut ensuring you don't crack or break something by trying to take a large cut. PVC cutters also work shockingly well as they are super sharp and simply slice the pipe cleanly.
    As for cracking and such, yes the stuff PC companies sell is complete shit as its extruded (notoriously bad for Acrylic) and the rapid and aggressive manufacturing process weakens the acrylic by constantly moving it and not giving it time to settle or fully "cure". I get mine from industrial supply and it's light-years ahead from the garbage you get from PC stores and it's actually cheaper when buying in bulk. The industrial stuff is a different polymer blend and can withstand some serious force before breaking, and because it's held to a higher standard they ensure the acrylic cools evenly and is strong enough for any application.
    Don't get me wrong PETG is some good stuff and if your not anal about details or want a quick job it's fine. I use it for small sections and fast connections as its much easier to get right than Acrylic, but Acrylic will always be clearer, more uniform in texture and will seal better compared to PETG simply because of its molecular structure, manufacturing process and how it cuts. Not trying to hate, but your not comparing Apples to Apples and your bashing bad acrylic versus very good PETG, that's like comparing your Nismo Z to a Lamborghini Aventador, two different levels of quality entirely.

    I'll never understand why people think hitting tube with a hammer has any bearing on its suitablility for a cooling loop.
    Its completely irrelevant and pointless.
    PETG is softer and deforms at lower temps. If your pump dies do you want the tube that deforms at the lower temp or higher temp? Thats a test that would be actually practical and relevant
    PETG is not as optically clear and its hard to get a decent finish on it after cutting because its so soft.
    Tried PETG and Acrylic is still my choice

If your PC is reaching 100 c you clearly did a bad job at making sure your radiators are working and flowing correctly. And if you don't even notice that your DC/D5 dies and continued to play your PC then that is your own fault! IDK about you, but my PC is see through!

    This test is kinda silly. How often does someone take a hammer to their PC? As you can see, the acrylic didn't break when he hit it on the table so it's very unlikely to break under normal conditions.
    Would you take a hammer to your CPU? Motherboard? Graphics card? No of course not because they would break wouldn't they?

      ***** Hard tubing is basically permanent tubing, maintenance and upgrades are a major pain in the ass. They look extremely clean though, and arguable require less maintenance if you do them right the first time(biocidal, no actual dye). Flexible tubing seems to kind go 'off' after a while if that makes any sense at all, like they get gummy. I hear it is caused by the plasticiser used to make the tubing flexible.

    Hey, Jayz, Keep up the good work, man.
    I have a question here, I am noticing that video card feeder blocks (EK, etc), and fittings (Bitspower, etc) seem to feed the card blocks in parallel flow splitting fashion.
    Does it matter if they are fed by flow splitting or daisy chained? I'm about a year out, maybe a little less, from doing a custom loop in my system, and am wondering if there is a temp difference between splitting or daisy chaining. A lot of what you have said to date makes me think this is not the case, or if it is the temp diff is so low as to not really matter.
    Also, on the subject of flow splitting. I have a Gigabyte Z97X Gaming G1 WiFi Black Edition. This has the water blocks on the VRM stacks. The blocks appear to be connected to each other with 1/4" or so, and I do plan to be using 1/2" ID acrylic tubing to reduce fittings costs, while still having a rigid system. How would I best deal with this? Would a flow-splitter of some kind be the answer?
    Thanks,

  • @xgcbadhabit9165
    @xgcbadhabit9165 8 лет назад +1

    jay i think you forgot to mention the water permeability that PETG has, which is, to me, the most important drawback of PETG. not a big deal though as long as you do maintenance at least every year. all other issues can be solved with some elbow grease. but there is no way to avoid water vapor escaping through the tube. i've heard PETG stains faster with dyes but ive never seen it as i don't use dyes.

      I'm not sure about the pumps vibration would cause it. But if you're making a small itx build with acrylic tubing to bring to lan parties, it could be a major problem if you drove over a pot hole while transporting it. I do know that if the water does get to warm enough acrylic has a much higher chance of cracking(usually caused my a hair line crack that wasn't seen)

    You also cannot use certain coolants with PETG -- namely anything containing ethylene glycol, also called ethane-diol or ethanediol (automotive antifreeze, Mayhem's XT-1, Phobya ZuperZero, Feser, among others). Propylene glycol is also called propane-diol or propanediol and can be used with PETG tubing -- Koolance, Primochill, XS-PC, Fluid XP+. Mayhem's X1 and Pastels use a glycerol and distilled water base, and as far as I can find, there's no concern with using that and PETG.

  • @Hellbeast58-Official
    @Hellbeast58-Official 9 лет назад

    PETG: Polyethylene terephthalate (aka. PET, PETE, PETG) is a plastic resin of the polyester family that is used to make beverage, food and other liquid containers, as well as for some other thermoforming applications. PETG is a clear amorphous thermoplastic that can be injection molded or sheet extruded. It can be colored during processing.

Not sure how well it works with PETG, but worth a try. Its just a small carbide disk the rotates around the pipe/tube and you tighten it gradually each time around until it cuts through.

    PETG is a food and drink friendly plastic. I just bought some PETG 3d printing filament for my 3d printer because of its strength and easy forming during print.

    Some chemistry: PETG smells when its cut because it contains a benzine ring. Benzine is well known for being 'aromatic', and although benzine itself has a 'sweet' smell, when combined with other atoms as a prat of a molecule, the smell can change. This is also amplified by the ester functional group on the ends of each unit, and esters are also known for their smells as they are used in sweets, such as pear drops.

    Honestly prefer acrylic... I would rather not hit my computer then have to nudge the tubing slightly for one reason or another ( example replacing ram) and bending the PETG

    Various types of PET are very useful and tend to be very tough and durable. As they age though these qualities are gradually lost. Just something to be aware of. In a computer case they are well protected from harsh conditions but in other applications exposure to sunlight, salt water, certain chemicals, or extreme temperatures will dramatically accelerate degradation and eventually the material will disintegrate. Should be okay inside of a case for the useful life of a PC though.

    I use Acrylic because I think it looks better/clearer and more glass like, and since I don’t have any plans to wack my tubes with a hammer I think I’ll be fine.

  • @RestfulSilent

    Not trying to be a smartass, but you can tell the difference between PETG and acrylic because of the greater sheen and rigidity acrylic has. If you look at the cut on the PETG tubing you can see that it is more abbraised and fogged where it was cut.

    very realistic Jay. I smash my components with a hammer all the time. God forbid someone do a strest test that involves running hot liquid through the tubes to see at what temp the PETG and Acrylic begins to deform and cause leaks.

    2:19 That's nice but thermal shocking is not a good way to test a material, and the hammer test, well sure the acrylic tube broke, but is that really relevant when watercooling a PC ?

    petg is like polly carb I work in a plastics factory. as far as bending if you use a heat proof white chalk board and place in the oven at the right temperature it will bend well. timing and temp can be critical though
