My Oma use to make this coffee cake and I only had parts of her recipe and most of my family who knew it have passed. This brought back wonderful memories, I can almost smell the aroma from your kitchen. Brought me to happy tears. A very long lost recipe I can now use. My Oma was born in 1897 so it has been a very long time! Thank you for sharing this recipe, it is amazing.
I pour cream over the finished pie and put it in the oven for another 2-3 minutes. very tasty pie! 👍

Always wonderful to have a good memories to ponder .
My Omi and mama never made it but one day I hope to. I miss them, too. It must be SO delicious.
I was adopted in Furth by an American family and moved to the US as an infant. I have always craved learning more about my German heritage. And baking traditional German recipes fills a part of my soul. Thank you for sharing these beautiful recipes.

Danke!

Thanks for your wonderful recipe. My mother was from Germany , she baked many things this wasn’t one of them. I will make it for my family.
I am so touched to see how many people from so many place are responding with loving memories of this recipe. We are all connected by food and memories. 😊❤️🙏
It's called "Butterkuchen" butter cake and well known until today in Germany. I love it with some almond flakes on top.
Thank-you for that info! God Bless!🤗
I know the Butterkuchen and the ones we would to Buy at a German bazaar in South Africa each year was a bit thinner and not the raw Sugar on top, so I am going to follow this recipe and half the dough into two Baking dishes but instead of sprinkling over raw Sugar actually follow through and spread Sugar and Butter mixture ontop as well (so make more of it) and then Bake it... although I have a slight suspision they used Cream and Sugar ontop because it didn't come out dry but slightly moist ontop. I will be experimenting using the above recipe until I replicate the ones from my childhood.
@@michellevandeventer3126 you're right about putting cream on top. I made this Butterkuchen today, and I did pour some cream on top of it right after I took it out of the oven. I like it with the cream, it's so moist and very delicious 😋
Almond flakes!!! Yes!!! 💖
Looks delicious
I know the recipe a little differently. Roll out the dough flat on the baking sheet, make dents in it with a teaspoon, put knobs of butter on it and sprinkle the rolled out dough with sugar. When the cake comes out of the oven, immediately spread with whipped cream. Is an old recipe from northern Germany.

That's a Butterkuchen or Zuckerkuchen and it's far from beingforgotten or extinct! It is a highly traditional and favorite Cake in the west-northern Parts of Germany, like Westfalen, Niedersachsen and Ostfriesland. It's an everyday sort of cake, but it is also served at gatherings after a funeral, that's why it is also called " Beerdigungskuchen" in Eastwestfalia. The little sister of "Butterzuckerkuchen" is the "Butterstreuselkuchen", it's the same batter but with crumbles on top instead of butter flakes. They are both equally delicious when freshly served.😍
Same in East Germany. We gerularly maki it at home. One of the easiest baked good one can make, taste good and (almost) everyone likes it. It's a staple in every bakery.
Don't know what to make for guests? Just make a Zuckerkuchen. 🤷♀️
It's not unheard of in the South, either, but we usually prefer Streuselkuchen or Käsekuchen at sober gatherings.
and also well known in Hesse, espacially in rural regions
Hahahah! OMG, I thought the same. BUtterlochkuchen hat mein Opa immer gesagt. Und ja, immer auf Beerdigungen. Genau wie Streuselkuchen.

I remember this dessert, I used to buy it at a bake shop on my way home from work in NYC, many years ago. Watching the final assembly of the recipe, brought back fond memories of looking at all of the delicious confections displayed for sale. I never forgot the look of my favorite cake. The bakery closed one day over 50 years ago, and this is the first time seeing a cake from my past. Thank you for sharing this nostalgic recipe ❤️ 💖 💗 💜 💕
I'm so flattened that I could bring back such a memory
Any chance the bakery was on Myrtle Avenue? My parents were both German descendants and that bakery was wonderful!
@@Einfache-Rezepte "flattened"???

Looks great! I live in Germany and know that as Zuckerkuchen. It would be baked in a sheet pan twice the size of that form, making it only half as high. This makes for a nice cake-to-crispy-sugar-topping ratio. Oh, and before sprinkling the sugar on top, there would be small knobs of butter dotted everywhere. Yum!
So, sugarcake. Mm. I want to put cinnamon on it so badly.
I make a cinnamon kuchen but it is pretty much a pound cake with a butter/cinnamon/sugar /flour topping about an inch thick on the top before baking.
In jeder Bäckerei erhältlich.

Thank you for sharing with us. My Grandmother use to make this when we came to visit. A part of our German heritage she shared. I haven't had in a long time. Going to make this for my family too. Brings back a lot of memories. Grandmother put almonds on top. It was special for us to eat.
My oma and mom made this too. Sometimes just the struesel and other times with slices of plum. For Church and family
Does this recipe have a name? Or is it just coffee cake?....
@@dianneoehman9147 if you add almonds on top it is called Beerdigungskuchen oder Butterkuchen in Westfalia, translated Funeral cake or butter cake, either way it is good but as with all sweets the poison is always in the amount of things, don't eat sweets too often.
My Gramma never made breads, so this is brand new to me! I'm 3rd gen American and she taught me everything I know about cooking. It was a long time before I felt comfortable making any recipe with actual measures, she taught me to bake/cook with my senses. She'd have a spoon, or tea cup, or small jar, anything along those lines, or she'd show me in my hand what it might be.
She taught me humidity was of the devil lolol We live in western NY so it's ungodly humid here in summer (and damp the rest of the year haha)
I've tried to write down all the recipes she showed me, with approximations of the measurements. She's say that my baking soda was never going to react the same each time I baked so I needed to watch, to smell, to touch to know how a recipe was going to work.
The oven may be fine one day and funky the next, never trust your oven hahaha
I make a mean sauerbraten and the 5 days of flipping and "spanking' are so worth it. "Just to let it know who's boss, Chrissy" she's tell me lolol
I cannot get a pie crust as flaky and perfect as hers though, I think she withheld something from me lol. Her crusts never got soggy with a chocolate silk pie, but were tender every time.
I'm grateful I don't need to cook pork chops like she had to in the 70s. I did learn the best way to make an onion gravy for them though! And I can still cook liver that doesn't take metallic (buttermilk bath and slightly undercook it)
Anyone else add apples to their cold potato salad? She swore by it (I will sometimes add jicama which we didn't have back then). Her Thanksgiving dressing/stuffing had wine soaked raisins in it and was pork based. We made it from scratch hand ground the pork, celery, onions, everything. Layed the bread out to air dry two days before (all over the entire kitchen lol)
Apple cider vinegar was used liberally on anything she could lol I had no idea other families didn't each canned spinach soaked in vinegar and butter! lol Sipping vinegar for your health before it was cool hahaha
Most all my family is from Oberweissenbrun, my mother went back there in 2014, i think, or 2015, and found we're related to most of the town!
My dear Crista; this makes for an interesting start to a book of some sort. I'd be interested in reading it if you do decide to write it. Blessings.
Thank you for these wonderful comments about your grandmother, her cooking and yours. What a blessed family and heritage. I'm going to read over this again-- love it. And thank you 👍👏🌹
@@2Hearts3 you are so very welcome. I'm happy you enjoyed reading it, I enjoyed sharing it.
That's how my grandmother taught me too
Instead of adding plain water to your pie crust recipe, put one tablespoon of apple cider or white vinegar into the water you're adding to the pie crust mixture.
Also, if you're using all butter instead of a butter and shortening mix, the crust will be delicious, but a little heavy.
My family is German and i learned to bake from my grandma, who was a fabulous baker. We had a family tradition that on everyone’s birthday, we awoke to a ‘birthday table’ with cards and gifts and the best thing possible, a ‘Napf Kuchen,’ an almond pound cake that dates back at least to my grandmother’s grandma. I still make the Napf Kuchen. In fact, I had a baking business years ago and that Napf Kuchen was my best seller. These videos bring back such wonderful memories!
That sounds wonderful, I'll put a Napfkuchen onto my list. 😊
