Pokemon doesn't have to try. All my friends in my friend group all bought Pokemon SV. Doesn't matter what happens people will still buy a game or plushie or cards. Another RUclipsr said it really well "Pokemon only has to take small steps to be praised while other companies have to take leaps to get the same reaction." Ye they made a open world wherein gym leaders dont even scaled on the player badges there are several romhacks in a fking GBA before pokemon SV that has a open world and gym leaders team and level do scale to the players present badges and here we are fking lazy ass gamefreak , they never understan how a open world system work its fking sucks the story is nonsensical if you treat is as a open world game

I'm really hoping people open their eyes about Pokemon games, they're not adapting to modern gaming. They have been making "attempts" but we need to hold these triple A games accountable. If an indie game were to put out something similar to Pokemons performance, it would get ridiculed. Pokemons reputation and fans make it hard for the company to deliver something fleshed out. They clearly make money off of releasing a half ass game so why would the company improve themselves when it's the easiest way for quick cash?
It's almost like most Pokemon fans' only point of comparison is the previous Pokemon game, but in this case, it isn't the entirity of Sword and Shield, it's just the wild area. You really can't compare this game to Breath of the Wild or Elden Ring, or heck, even Skyrim. It's a pathetic game.
Arceus and Scarred/Violent are two halves of an open world Pokemon game, each developed by roughly half of Game Freak's current staff. Instead of you know, just having everyone work together on the same open world game or one small team make a small-scale spinoff while the bulk of the staff work on the main game.
The argument of "it's a kid's game" gets completely destroyed by the fact that the Mario and Luigi RPGs exist as well as the mystery dungeon games. "It's for kids" shouldn't excuse lack of story/character writing, difficulty, or quality. Side note: a few critiques I have: .I wish they would stop with gimmicks. Everything is just worse mega evolution. .hot take but music has been mid ever since sun and moon, with the exception of a few tracks. .I wish the protag would emote more like in Let's Go. Ever since Suma and Moon the protag just feels like an excuse for the player to be there. Remember in BW where you actually felt like the protagonist?
The fact that Nemona is pretty one note is one of the most frustrating things to me. They did amazing with Arven and really good with Penny, they get fleshed out as people, meanwhile they make everything about Nemona strictly battling. But they stopped at the surface level with it. Nemona is some of us, shes the players that love to battle, the people that make and watch long as videos about how to battle the best and build the best pokemon. We can rematch team star once a day, but we cant just challenge Nemona?!?! Her whole post story thing is that shes looking for someone to fight but we cant just go to her room and challenge her once a day!? Atleast!? Imagine if they gave her a whole list of different battle styles she can do with you, imagine if she actually busted out ALL the pokemon she talks about training throughout the game, if you could double or triple battle with her. Imagine if she could be used as an advance npc that you could get a small grasp of what competitive battling was like. If she loved battling so much then truly let her go all out.
I'd LOVE to have thrown out battle styles return with Nemona. It'd be really cool to see her acknowledge the other battle styles because of her interest. I appreciate them making someone like me that just wants to throw hands at anything that moves, but it's boring to not to have real interactions based on it. Why not randomly see Nemona battling trainers? That'd be fun to see.
Man, realising I couldn't enter most buildings made me so sad. I was up on the snowy mountain and thought, "I should go warm up inside somewhere!" Yeah. No. There is no more "inside."
One detail I'd like to mention about Persona 5 regarding the School Setting (I know other Persona games have School Settings) I was playing this as I was learning Japanese, and noticed that Caroline says "Oi, Shujin!" When kicking you into the Velvet Room. After recalling the Schools name (Shujin Academy), I had asked a friend of mine who's at a Higher Japanese level than mine if Shujin meant something along the lines of Prisoner, and it really made the school setting just a lot better considering the themes of the game. Although this has the hilarious repercussion of realizing the school is literally called "Prisoner Academy/Prisoner High School"
Pretty sure I got recommend this due to the sheer amount of fights I get into on this exact topic with "fans" who think this game is perfect in every way and no-one should complain about it ever. This is a great video, points out all the things that have largely been bothering me with the game as well some of the things I didn't consider but definitely negatively impacted my overall experience. Only one for me that's a bit contentious is Voice acting, I definitely agree it needs some, but I've been down this road before, 90% of voice acting in foreign games suck. Same pool of VA's, no real voice variety, don't suit the characters, yadda yadda, but that's another argument entirely. This will most likely be my last Pokémon game. I got back into the series when I got addicted to shiny hunting in SwSh, and because PLA showed alot of promise, but ScarVio did the equivalent of crapping its pants and dying. One thing I fail to see mentioned, and the hill I will gladly die on, is the Pokémon storage system. Been the same since gen fucking 3 and despite the fact there are 3x as many Pokémon, it's still entirely manual and irritatingly obtuse. It makes me actually livid.
Thank god someone succinctly points out every shortcoming. I've only seen a few people talk at length but you bring up a lot of great points. I'm so gutted about purchasing violet, I literally feel cheated out of my money. Arceus gave me hope that pokemon was going in a crazy good next direction. Going from that game to S/V was like falling face down in the mud. A couple cute pokemon and a shitty Ed Sheeran cherry to top it all off at the end

On the school thing I feel like a good example that could be brought up is Fire Emblem 3 houses. A Nintendo game made by a much smaller studio than Gamefreak that for the first time set the game in a school with great success. What you do in classes MATTERS. You enjoy spending time in the school and your students/fellow instructors. (But of course, your suggestions are way more fitting to Pokemon). By Deity I always love your videos. Your suggestions are always exactly on-point for combatting the weaknesses you find. Keep up the amazing work, your videos deserve millions of views.
Someone needs to do a documentary on gamefreak itself, I genuinely believe that all the shortcomings are because they lack the experience and knowledge on how to implement the changes that’s necessary for the games
Honestly I feel like this vid could be summarize as "Pokemon will never change but also can't figure out what it wants to be" because it feels like Scarlet/Violet wanted to be Persona and Breath and the Wild at the same time but those aren't compatible gameplay styles. Breath of the Wild has characters but most of its gameplay is in its exploration without limits; for Pokemon to be that it would have to give up on all its existing linearity and implement features like dynamic level scaling. If it wants to be Persona it can continue having those linear features like gyms, the Pokemon league, etc... but its character writing has t be made so much stronger so you have an actual reason to read all this dialogue. Like personally I didn't even know you could visit like Penny's room and stuff in the game despite playing through it TWICE because I was so disappointed with so much of how it handled characters that after the credits I just never checked out the actual post game. Like I'm pretty sure unless something major happens Scarlet will be the last mainline Pokemon game in my gaming library. There's just... better options these days thanks to indie studios creating their own monster collecting RPGs there's no reason to give Game Freak anymore money for their rushed half thought out products.
Great overview, shamefull state the games are in now. The Switch era is filled with legit good ideas that are overall unfinished & rushed , The voice acting point in particular is a good one, having characters flap their lips , talk in the overworld & even sing without any voices is such a disconect, Your voice acting was wonderful , truly elevated the scenes (although you may need a puff filter for the P's) Looking forward to more from you, Also im sure many can relate to your ending, good luck man & hope you finnish that book
Agree man, as a kid playing RB all the way to a BW I dreamt of the future of Pokémon being this franchise with unlimited potential to be great. And it’s sad because they do have that unlimited potential and they just continue to put out mediocre product after mediocre product. And most of the Pokémon fans just eat it up. I have sworn off buying any new Pokémon games until I see change. But I’m afraid that day will never come. I guess if I need my Pokémon fix I always have the golden age to go back to.
I'm just coming back to pokemon after getting tired of the formulaic games and stopping with x&y and I gotta say I am disappointment I chose scarlet to come back to the franchise with. Some of the new pokemon are really cool, designs for gym leaders, some of the teachers and the elite team are pretty cool and the musics pretty good. Thats about the only good thing I can say. The points you touched on are spot on for how I've found my own experience, especially when you touched on the games would be better suited for a bit less open but more intimate. The game feels unfinished and lacking in some of the more intimate aspects of previous games. When I started I couldn't wait to get to the town to change out of the goofy school outfit. Then I realized I couldn't and questioned why I even had the ability to "customize" the character instead of being presented with a pregen character if they insisted on limited my customization. Then When I seen my dorm and the commentary about my own room I figured I'd be able to get items to decorate it, only to find out nope, nothing. It just feels half-hearted when it comes to making the experience your own and feels more like a vehicle for releasing a few new pokemon for you to battle competitively against others with. I don't think I'll be jumping into the next iteration of the franchise unless they fix a lot of the problems here but given what I've seen about current yearly release cycle I feel like its unlikely we will see any meaningful changes to the most common complaints. For everything new they did with the series since I played x&y they took two steps backwards on other aspects that would have been wonderful to see in the open world style. Disappointment is the only thing I can really say encapsulates my feeling here. The Best pokemon game I've played in modern times isn't even a pokemon game, its pixelmon. I can customize my trainer with infinite options, I can design the cities and towns to be immersive, I can write my own story lines and quests, create puzzles and challenges, its open world and does more for me then what gamefreak seems capable of doing. EDIT: other aspects of the game felt lack luster like the classes, I would have liked some sort of interactive activity unique to each class, Like the art class wanting us to take photos of pokemon, or a sculpting mini-game where we can add our sculpture and photos or painted art to our dorm. The battle class allowing us to take on other students and rewarding us with a useful held item etc. Theres so much potential here that just seems wasted on making a world that while bigger then ever is colder and more empty then ever as a consequence.

Thank you for this video. I know, as you said, we who criticize the monolith of Pokemon are a minority but it doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t say our piece at all. There are many a people who are done (like myself) or are on the verge of being done with Pokemon. And this let’s us know that we’re not alone! I appreciate your voice of reason and your criticisms of this series. I wish the series wasn’t in the state as it is, but what can you do against a the hordes of hundred of millions of fanboys and fangirls who will happily eat whatever GameFreak puts out. I’ll say this: I honestly hate the protection of criticism that comes with Pokemon. The series gets a free pass on things that would unacceptable for most triple-A titles but because “Its Pokemon” it gets overlooked. Especially with paid game reviewers like IGN and such giving it such preferential treatment by giving the games no less than a 6 or 7. Its just inconsistency across the board with the zeitgeist because one step “forward” for Pokemon would be a HUUUGE offense to another game/series. The immunity is real. And that’s what bothers me most about Pokemon: that no matter what-as you said-Pokemon is good for what it is. :/ I just wish people wanted more from a 100 BILLION dollar franchise. I just wish all the gamers that laughed at No Man’s Sky, Cyberpunk 2077, Fallout 76 and many more games would reflect at least a little and see that Pokemon is probably worse. Also watching my little brother play Viva Piñata on his Xbox Ser. X made me realize that we could be having much more on Switch hardware from Pokemon. MUCH. MORE. The Switch is probably a little underpowered compared to the Xbox 360° but let’s get real the 360° almost came out 2 decades ago and Pokemon still looks like a first year title on the Dreamcast. Disappointment is not even enough to describe the depth of my feeling I have towards a franchise I once loved. :(
I dont think a lot of people disagree with you on this one. Scarlet and Violet are fun games, I'm a massive pokemon fan but I dont play a lot of the newer games, last one I played was Sword and only because someone got it for me lol. I had no intention to get this one till i got sold on the open world concept that rekindled my love for the games. But as much as i enjoyed playing the game, it made me sad and disappointed. I think most people feel that way. Sure it's fun, but there are so many flaws, and Pokemon is such an old franchise that it should be getting better, not worse. To play a game that glitches this much is unacceptable. They dont need to rush these, were willing to wait, the people who grew up with the games have made that clear. But the fact that they dont take that time, or build their team enough to do what they need to do. Theres just so many aspects working against them that there doesnt need to be. These games made me realize that we could be getting such a grand experience from them, but GF simply isnt providing it for whatever reason. As someone that grew up with pokemon I just wanna see it get better and utilize the advancing technology's that we have available to us. I dont need realistic graphics, but a completed game would be amazing.
Damn, that conclusion woke me up. I'm not even joking. It opened my eyes to the state of Pokemon by today's standards. People always compared the now-to-then of everything and how the now is most often better, but for video games, it's different. Pokemon is a prime example that the now can be worse. That rotting machine either needs to be updated and expanded upon, or it needs to be shut down. For good. Nintendo and Gamefreak have a choice to make, let's hope they make it and stick to it.

I need to know what kind of mental illness makes someone think to make another musician for a gym leader with no voice acting or song. They really said "She'll rap in text, it'll be fine".
I've said it once, and I'll say it again: Every flaw in the main games are the direct result if the entire franchise, especially the merchandising, being on a strict and unstopping time table. Other franchises that have as strict, or even tighter, release schedules than Pokemon do much better because those companies put the money they make back into the games to at least justify having such short turnaround times. Why would I buy an annual release game to have to replay everything I already played if the next game isn't going to have better graphics, tighter controls, new innovations, or progress the franchise in some way? Yet, Pokemon does exactly that, and Game Freak refuses to take the money and actually put it to use by hiring more staff or subsidizing competent studios to handle some of the work load. Instead, they train their junior staff on the mainline games while the experienced people get relegated to side projects.
Yes! Finally someone mentioned that we cant watch our friend's gym battles. Played through the game together with my friend and oh boy were we disappointed when we reached the first Gym
man pokemon sv just made me miserable. one of my biggest gripes is my character doesnt feel like me at all due to my reaction to story/3 paths moments being completely different to my character's reaction. the ending of the game was so bad for me because arven was happy. After finding all of that out i couldnt have imagined the ending being hunky dory road trip. wheres the absolute devastation??? the gym challenge also suffered hard with the unique type themed gyms of past now being eradicated, as well as the gyms just being plain easier. i found nemona to be over bearing and just wanted to get away from her. the lack of choice in the game really contradicted with the open worldness so it worsened my experience. the close pop in of pokemon really ruined immersion for me. the lack of in-world npc interactions/events as well as empty cities made the game really really hollow. the worst part is the performance which completely ruined the experience as i just kept thinking of the money i spent on the game as well as pokemon being the biggest franchise when frame drops happened(frame drops happened always).
This may seem like a weird thing to point out, but I like how you and I both seem to agree that the "every NPC is the happiest damn person on earth and thinks you're Keanu Reeves" thing needs to stop. It's not like Pokemon was always a masterclass of writing, but at least some older Pokemon characters challenged you and felt a bit more human. These, meanwhile, are coding strings and algorithms and formulas, but it's all cold and dead. Just have someone insult me, Game Freak, come on. At least *try* to immerse me.
I guess Nintendo, Gamefreak, and the other company have nowhere to go this time, because the internet is flooded with heavy criticism. They do deserve it all, even though I still really like the game, they simply can't be releasing unfinished, scrappy beta versions
I shared so many of these opinions and hearing them back really made me realize that I have been settling when it comes to pokemon... I'm unfortunately still in love with the series
Biggest issues the Gen 9 games tends repeat too much during the gameplay. 1. Fire Staters Favoritism. If the company keeps on favoring the Fire Starters over the two selection starters types, what is point the starter trio then? Seriously, it seem very salty towards pokemon like Blastoise, Sceptile, Swampert, Torterra, Samurott, Greninja, Decidueye, Primarina, Rillaboom and Inteleon for not being fire types or simply having good designs. It feels like they are trying make the Fire Starters way better than the rest. Gen 10 should give all the starter evolutions trio good designs and stop favoring one over the others. 2. Type Coverage limitations. Why the type selections seem very limited? It seems the single typings pokemon had their original secondary type remove for no reasons. It is jarring they don't want more than one repeating dual typings for new pokemon that is useful like another Grass/Fire, Fire/Water, Grass/Water, Electric/Ice, Ice/Water, Electric/Psychic, Electric/Grass, Ice/Fire, Ice/Fairy, Rock/Grass, Ground/Flying, Poison/Psychic, Fairy/Water and Steel/Fire types. Or unused dual typings that is not regional forms like Ice/Poison, Ground/Fairy, Rock/Ghost and Normal/Bug types. 3. Paradox pokemon. All the paradox pokemon are okay and interesting ideas. But, making them way too similar to Ultra Beasts is dumb. Couldn't they let be their breeding group for future games? Nope of course not. 4. Gen 1 favoritism. Stop with Kanto Pokemon pandering. It is extremely annoying and it needs to let other generation pokemon a chance to shine. The convergent pokemon seem like a excuse to create Gen 1 pokemon copies and screwing over other generation pokemon like Gen 7 regional forms again. 5. Regional forms. The game was so rush, only two regional forms. Tauros has three forms. It felt like a punch to the face for simply asking for other generation pokemon get regional forms over Gen 1 mons. Geez, they even push out pokemon Alolan Vulpix, Alolan Marowak, Galarian Yamask and Galarian Darumaka evolutionary lines out way because they are pretty popular. Too bad they didn't made Sinnohan and more Paldean forms for the games to expand type selections choices. 6. Pokemon Designs. It range from awesome to WFT is that. Some are perfect and rest tend to be forgettable at times. Past Paradox are awesome. Wish the Future Paradox pokemon weren't just "robotic" versions, how about the next batch like future evolution instead cyborgs. Since Paldea based on Spain, where the water dog, fighting predatory birds and other Spain based on animals that never was introduced in the games? They really could've had a ice, water, grass and flying type canine pokemon or a water, rock, ground and ghost feline pokemon. Weird they add a standalone parrot pokemon. But, they won't add a fighting type vulture evolutionary line. 7. Single Stage. If is only legendary or mythical Pokemon, it's fine. But, they keep on going back certain Pokemon like Grafarig, Zigzagoon, Stantler and Basculin to give them needed evolutions. Which is obviously to say "Just give every pokemon a pre evolution or farther evolution that isn't hassle to get like Mantyke or Feebass?" Really, Meowth gets another evolution line and Shuckle or Mimikyu gets no evolutions? Why? 8. Pokemon League. Paldea champion should've had a all Paldea team like Cynthia or Diantha. Victory Road could've had trainers across world battling for the champion position against the player. 9. Post Game. The four legendaries should've been post game and actually play a bigger role in the game like the Paldea King descendant seeking power by controlling the four legendaries. But, failing due to the player interferences. 10. Voice Actors. Again? So, Pokemon Masters are allowed to have voice overs. But, the main game series get nothing? Why? Just have the characters in the games with speaking lines say "kid", "boy", "girl" or "player" instead of saying their name. Positives 1. Team Star. They are the oddest and outrageous team in the game. Best sympathetic team since Team Skull. It is upgraded version over Team Yell. Penny being the true leader behind the scenes was cool. 2. Gym Leaders. They have great themes based the jobs they positions in. It is unfair they assigned to limited type coverages on their team under Geeta's hypocritical rules at times. Larry is still the best gym leaders next to Iono, Kofu and Tulip. 3. Music soundtracks. Most sounds pretty good. Conclusion At this point, keep wishing Pokemon company would listen to constructive criticisms as form of corrections. So far they finally decided to make new protagonists for the Pokemon anime after nine generations. Still really hoping they try not rushing out the games and improve the games for the better. Four biggest requests for the next game. 1. Stop making tutorials on unskipppable . Nobody like sitting through a 30 mins or hour tutorials forcing upon the player. Just make it like Kalos tutorials, short and quick access to the wonder trades. 2. Pokemon Daycare. Just remove lower caretaker price to 100 than 500. The picnic seems like a meh at best. 3. Pokemon Refresh and Pokemon Amie. Both of this systems were perfect on their own. They should reused one of them again. Except, add features like pokemon moving around like pokemon camp. 4. Just hired anime singers or someone who can create a anime song for the games. The Ed Sheeran song in the ending felt really off. 5. Accessible buildings. 6. The Chibis again. They should've stayed with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Chibis style, looking both appealing and easier to manage on building structures since they are going do 2 or 3 years cycle again.
I wont lie, I acknowledge the flaws and do wish they would put more detail and quality into the mainline games but for me at least, 2022 gave me 2 good pokemon games. Legends Arceus and Scarlet and Violet have recaptured that magic for me and I really hope they do for other people eventually so they can love it like I do.
I'm willing to bet 60$ that the area0 experience is what Gamefreak have been trying to turn pokemon into since generation six. If the Area0 character interactions is what you want, I'm betting that the next Gen will be built around that.
My main problem with Scarlet and Violet is tera raids. How can you make this the new main gimmick or feature and have it be so broken? Even with how broken azumarill huge power play rough is in tera raids, it is still considered I guess the meta for tera raids. Thats not even mentioning the broken timer, cheers, and just how the tera pokemon gets so many turns at once that can take out your pokemon and then take a big chunk out of the timer and you have to wait for your pokemon to come back out, like you can't even cheer? Plus if you are playing with NPCs and your pokemon faints, everyone just sits there and waits with you for your pokemon to come back out! So no progress is being made and you just watch the timer go down. I hate tera raids, like how did you make me want to go back to sword and shields max raids? How did you, Pokemon, make a previously considered so bad pokemon game look better then your most recent one? Sure you can say that about every pokemon game coming out but you shouldn't be able to say that! A game that comes out after a previous one in a series is supposed to improve, not make you look back fondly on previous games. Sorry I ranted in your comments, just wish pokemon would do better, not regress.
53:37 honestly this feature is available in POKEMMO a free pokemon mutilplayer for the 2d games. thats a team of volunteers and only operates bc its the owners hobby. How is this the biggest media franchise in the world and doesnt use current gen multiplayer faetures at all
Great video mate. Also....Wow....yea.... voice acting in scenes incredibly changes the dynamics of events. Also agree with the school setting. With said school setting, I almost feel like they should take a few pages from digimon's playbook. Through school, you can learn about pokemon potential (EV/IVs) learning about friendship, higher friendship the better, and pokemon breeding (Bred pokemon having higher IVs and maxed friendship to start towards their breeder). Things that will actually make you a better trainer, with in game knoledge that can even make you a better player. Also note...remove terrsalize. Instead, use what the story is using. Bring back Mega-evolution, BUT now a new mega-evolution method (because man did they just hate it so much) in Paradox-evolution. Same mechanic, but turning pokemon into their future or past varients.
Idk what circles you were running in but I've been seeing plenty of critical pokemon content ever since SwSh and I appreciate it bc Pokemon has been getting far too complacent/rushed/lazy whatever and really needs some pushback, and I say this bc I LOVE Pokemon and want it to be BETTER! A phantasy star universe like style with dungeons and party members for story beats and assigned as a battle partner would be awesome. It doesn't even have to be open world if they took the story seriously. Of course, voice acting would be cool as well.
To touch on the voice acting part. I agree, and its not the first time this franchise had voice acting too! I still remember how awkward it was to see Pierse or however his name is spelt sing. Yet a DS game had voice acting? To solve the player name issue voice actors face they could simply address you with a general term like "my friend" for example. As for actual names? Just the ones the game generates will be spoken. As for how often said vocie acting occurs it should just be during at scripts and cutscenes ala totk and botw or mhs2. As for the rest? Give us general grunts or something when speaking to npcs. I just got the game recently and its still as bad graphically, frame rate and overall optimization. When going to the boxes it loads the menu faster than the transition. I did notice how the models switch from low to high poly versions and just being amazed they're using a standard technique.
remember when leaving the cave in the beginning when nemona yells out to you.... silently? but when you reach her she claps, and the clapping has amazing HD audio quality? that gave me the worst lack of voice acting whiplash ever also mr saguaro the instructor is submissive and breedable daddy
I seriously would've preferred if the battle system stayed the same from gen 7, I seriously love the old formula and I really don't like all the new gimmicks they're adding, I stopped playing Pokemon games at Shield, it was the last one I played but I didn't like that game at all.The last game I really liked was USUM. It also would've been really nice if they didn't kill of mega evolution or Z Moves, because again I loved those mechanics but GameFreak clearly didn't care enough about them. I'm also not gonna lie, I kinda wish they would stop adding new mons to the game, we already have a decent amount and I prefer the older ones, new regions isn't a bad thing at all, and neither are the new mons. But I'd love to just stick to the old ways of doing things. I also don't prefer the open world. I miss the linear and small routes and cities.
I feel that at the core concepts of the game Pokémon SV had the potential to be one of if not the best Pokémon game ever however the execution and lack of depth killed that potential. I think this video nailled it and I hope if they ever remake Pokémon SV they adress these issues and make it the game it deserved to be.
So the reason I clicked on this video was because, well, I agreed with the title, the "thesis" if you will. I enjoyed my time with SV more so than SwSh. However, once I finished it I felt much the same way I did after gen4. Basically this game has been largely the same for the last 10 years with no real change. I ignored gen5 when it was released until I had some friends tell me that there was an actual story, that the evil team was more of a focus, something I had wanted since gen3 executed the idea(poorly imo). I ended up loving gen 5, it was the 1st time I got the "3rd version"(I know it was an actual sequel but my point remains) So it brought me back to the series, which then started taking steps backward from gen5's setup but I kept going because I had hope. Oras was great XY not so much so it was becoming up and down. Gen8 was the biggest disappointment to me. with its focus on the gym challenge so much so that you didn't even get to be a part of the story until the climax. I got gen9 because I wanted to give the series a last chance. And i liked a lot of what was there, but like you said(essentially) it was barebones. The school was a great idea, but it wasn't fleshed out, same with the Team Star bases, and the Titan pokemon. So much wasted potential that while I enjoyed my time, unless I see evidence of big changes for gen10, I will not be returning to the mainline series anytime soon. tl;dr I agree with everything you said in the video
They will never improve until fans finally put their foot down and demand better quality by refusing to spend our money on these half assed money grabs.
An open world video game should never center around a school because schools are places where you can not run around. It is stupid to make being a champion be your homework. When class is over, you are allowed to wear casual clothes, which is why they should have never made the trainer custom options more limited than in XY and Let's Go combined.
Hooray a new video! I'll likely buy this game; but used. And after some patches...IF they correct a lot of the issues. I don't wanna give them any more money. It really sucks that they continue to give us the bare minimum but charge as much as any AAA title..
What I'll never forgive gf for is how they set the moves for every pokemon you transfer from pokemon bank into this game. It's already bad enough that we went back to temporary tms but you had to undue all that optimal move progress from those who played older games or sword and shield to force them to hunt materials? For Christ's sake...
I would argue the thing they are good at had been declining, people have just lowered their standards, very few of the new pokemon are actually good. I hate most the pokemon from this generation, i like about 10 evo lines and the rest could be erased IMO, fan arts have a better idea of what a pokemon should be then the actual game creators.
My hope for this franchise if for new management to take over and make changes that will benefit the mainline games, but as it stands right now I don't think I'll ever be returning to this franchise or it's fanbase.

Ye they made a open world wherein gym leaders dont even scaled on the player badges there are several romhacks in a fking GBA before pokemon SV that has a open world and gym leaders team and level do scale to the players present badges and here we are fking lazy ass gamefreak , they never understan how a open world system work its fking sucks the story is nonsensical if you treat is as a open world game

I'm really hoping people open their eyes about Pokemon games, they're not adapting to modern gaming. They have been making "attempts" but we need to hold these triple A games accountable. If an indie game were to put out something similar to Pokemons performance, it would get ridiculed. Pokemons reputation and fans make it hard for the company to deliver something fleshed out. They clearly make money off of releasing a half ass game so why would the company improve themselves when it's the easiest way for quick cash?

It's almost like most Pokemon fans' only point of comparison is the previous Pokemon game, but in this case, it isn't the entirity of Sword and Shield, it's just the wild area. You really can't compare this game to Breath of the Wild or Elden Ring, or heck, even Skyrim. It's a pathetic game.
This is more then half assed it's bad
Arceus and Scarred/Violent are two halves of an open world Pokemon game, each developed by roughly half of Game Freak's current staff. Instead of you know, just having everyone work together on the same open world game or one small team make a small-scale spinoff while the bulk of the staff work on the main game.
The argument of "it's a kid's game" gets completely destroyed by the fact that the Mario and Luigi RPGs exist as well as the mystery dungeon games.
"It's for kids" shouldn't excuse lack of story/character writing, difficulty, or quality.
Side note: a few critiques I have:
.I wish they would stop with gimmicks. Everything is just worse mega evolution.
.hot take but music has been mid ever since sun and moon, with the exception of a few tracks.
.I wish the protag would emote more like in Let's Go. Ever since Suma and Moon the protag just feels like an excuse for the player to be there. Remember in BW where you actually felt like the protagonist?
The fact that Nemona is pretty one note is one of the most frustrating things to me. They did amazing with Arven and really good with Penny, they get fleshed out as people, meanwhile they make everything about Nemona strictly battling. But they stopped at the surface level with it. Nemona is some of us, shes the players that love to battle, the people that make and watch long as videos about how to battle the best and build the best pokemon. We can rematch team star once a day, but we cant just challenge Nemona?!?! Her whole post story thing is that shes looking for someone to fight but we cant just go to her room and challenge her once a day!? Atleast!? Imagine if they gave her a whole list of different battle styles she can do with you, imagine if she actually busted out ALL the pokemon she talks about training throughout the game, if you could double or triple battle with her. Imagine if she could be used as an advance npc that you could get a small grasp of what competitive battling was like. If she loved battling so much then truly let her go all out.
I'd LOVE to have thrown out battle styles return with Nemona. It'd be really cool to see her acknowledge the other battle styles because of her interest. I appreciate them making someone like me that just wants to throw hands at anything that moves, but it's boring to not to have real interactions based on it. Why not randomly see Nemona battling trainers? That'd be fun to see.

One detail I'd like to mention about Persona 5 regarding the School Setting (I know other Persona games have School Settings)
I was playing this as I was learning Japanese, and noticed that Caroline says "Oi, Shujin!" When kicking you into the Velvet Room. After recalling the Schools name (Shujin Academy), I had asked a friend of mine who's at a Higher Japanese level than mine if Shujin meant something along the lines of Prisoner, and it really made the school setting just a lot better considering the themes of the game. Although this has the hilarious repercussion of realizing the school is literally called "Prisoner Academy/Prisoner High School"
Pretty sure I got recommend this due to the sheer amount of fights I get into on this exact topic with "fans" who think this game is perfect in every way and no-one should complain about it ever. This is a great video, points out all the things that have largely been bothering me with the game as well some of the things I didn't consider but definitely negatively impacted my overall experience. Only one for me that's a bit contentious is Voice acting, I definitely agree it needs some, but I've been down this road before, 90% of voice acting in foreign games suck. Same pool of VA's, no real voice variety, don't suit the characters, yadda yadda, but that's another argument entirely.
This will most likely be my last Pokémon game. I got back into the series when I got addicted to shiny hunting in SwSh, and because PLA showed alot of promise, but ScarVio did the equivalent of crapping its pants and dying. One thing I fail to see mentioned, and the hill I will gladly die on, is the Pokémon storage system. Been the same since gen fucking 3 and despite the fact there are 3x as many Pokémon, it's still entirely manual and irritatingly obtuse. It makes me actually livid.
Thank god someone succinctly points out every shortcoming. I've only seen a few people talk at length but you bring up a lot of great points. I'm so gutted about purchasing violet, I literally feel cheated out of my money. Arceus gave me hope that pokemon was going in a crazy good next direction. Going from that game to S/V was like falling face down in the mud. A couple cute pokemon and a shitty Ed Sheeran cherry to top it all off at the end
As for the voice acting, i 100% agree. They already hire actors for the anime, why not just add a couple more lines?

On the school thing I feel like a good example that could be brought up is Fire Emblem 3 houses.
A Nintendo game made by a much smaller studio than Gamefreak that for the first time set the game in a school with great success. What you do in classes MATTERS. You enjoy spending time in the school and your students/fellow instructors. (But of course, your suggestions are way more fitting to Pokemon).

Honestly I feel like this vid could be summarize as "Pokemon will never change but also can't figure out what it wants to be" because it feels like Scarlet/Violet wanted to be Persona and Breath and the Wild at the same time but those aren't compatible gameplay styles. Breath of the Wild has characters but most of its gameplay is in its exploration without limits; for Pokemon to be that it would have to give up on all its existing linearity and implement features like dynamic level scaling. If it wants to be Persona it can continue having those linear features like gyms, the Pokemon league, etc... but its character writing has t be made so much stronger so you have an actual reason to read all this dialogue.
Like personally I didn't even know you could visit like Penny's room and stuff in the game despite playing through it TWICE because I was so disappointed with so much of how it handled characters that after the credits I just never checked out the actual post game. Like I'm pretty sure unless something major happens Scarlet will be the last mainline Pokemon game in my gaming library. There's just... better options these days thanks to indie studios creating their own monster collecting RPGs there's no reason to give Game Freak anymore money for their rushed half thought out products.

Agree man, as a kid playing RB all the way to a BW I dreamt of the future of Pokémon being this franchise with unlimited potential to be great. And it’s sad because they do have that unlimited potential and they just continue to put out mediocre product after mediocre product. And most of the Pokémon fans just eat it up. I have sworn off buying any new Pokémon games until I see change. But I’m afraid that day will never come. I guess if I need my Pokémon fix I always have the golden age to go back to.
I'm just coming back to pokemon after getting tired of the formulaic games and stopping with x&y and I gotta say I am disappointment I chose scarlet to come back to the franchise with. Some of the new pokemon are really cool, designs for gym leaders, some of the teachers and the elite team are pretty cool and the musics pretty good. Thats about the only good thing I can say. The points you touched on are spot on for how I've found my own experience, especially when you touched on the games would be better suited for a bit less open but more intimate.
The game feels unfinished and lacking in some of the more intimate aspects of previous games. When I started I couldn't wait to get to the town to change out of the goofy school outfit. Then I realized I couldn't and questioned why I even had the ability to "customize" the character instead of being presented with a pregen character if they insisted on limited my customization. Then When I seen my dorm and the commentary about my own room I figured I'd be able to get items to decorate it, only to find out nope, nothing. It just feels half-hearted when it comes to making the experience your own and feels more like a vehicle for releasing a few new pokemon for you to battle competitively against others with.
I don't think I'll be jumping into the next iteration of the franchise unless they fix a lot of the problems here but given what I've seen about current yearly release cycle I feel like its unlikely we will see any meaningful changes to the most common complaints. For everything new they did with the series since I played x&y they took two steps backwards on other aspects that would have been wonderful to see in the open world style. Disappointment is the only thing I can really say encapsulates my feeling here.
The Best pokemon game I've played in modern times isn't even a pokemon game, its pixelmon. I can customize my trainer with infinite options, I can design the cities and towns to be immersive, I can write my own story lines and quests, create puzzles and challenges, its open world and does more for me then what gamefreak seems capable of doing.
EDIT: other aspects of the game felt lack luster like the classes, I would have liked some sort of interactive activity unique to each class, Like the art class wanting us to take photos of pokemon, or a sculpting mini-game where we can add our sculpture and photos or painted art to our dorm. The battle class allowing us to take on other students and rewarding us with a useful held item etc. Theres so much potential here that just seems wasted on making a world that while bigger then ever is colder and more empty then ever as a consequence.
1:15:24 would you consider a review on an older pokemon games that youve played a lot or really cherish? the gen 4 side games like pokemon ranger/pokemon conquest are some of my favorite and id be interested to see you take a look back into the past.

Thank you for this video. I know, as you said, we who criticize the monolith of Pokemon are a minority but it doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t say our piece at all. There are many a people who are done (like myself) or are on the verge of being done with Pokemon. And this let’s us know that we’re not alone! I appreciate your voice of reason and your criticisms of this series. I wish the series wasn’t in the state as it is, but what can you do against a the hordes of hundred of millions of fanboys and fangirls who will happily eat whatever GameFreak puts out.
I’ll say this: I honestly hate the protection of criticism that comes with Pokemon. The series gets a free pass on things that would unacceptable for most triple-A titles but because “Its Pokemon” it gets overlooked. Especially with paid game reviewers like IGN and such giving it such preferential treatment by giving the games no less than a 6 or 7. Its just inconsistency across the board with the zeitgeist because one step “forward” for Pokemon would be a HUUUGE offense to another game/series. The immunity is real. And that’s what bothers me most about Pokemon: that no matter what-as you said-Pokemon is good for what it is. :/ I just wish people wanted more from a 100 BILLION dollar franchise.
I just wish all the gamers that laughed at No Man’s Sky, Cyberpunk 2077, Fallout 76 and many more games would reflect at least a little and see that Pokemon is probably worse.
Also watching my little brother play Viva Piñata on his Xbox Ser. X made me realize that we could be having much more on Switch hardware from Pokemon. MUCH. MORE. The Switch is probably a little underpowered compared to the Xbox 360° but let’s get real the 360° almost came out 2 decades ago and Pokemon still looks like a first year title on the Dreamcast. Disappointment is not even enough to describe the depth of my feeling I have towards a franchise I once loved. :(

I dont think a lot of people disagree with you on this one. Scarlet and Violet are fun games, I'm a massive pokemon fan but I dont play a lot of the newer games, last one I played was Sword and only because someone got it for me lol. I had no intention to get this one till i got sold on the open world concept that rekindled my love for the games. But as much as i enjoyed playing the game, it made me sad and disappointed. I think most people feel that way. Sure it's fun, but there are so many flaws, and Pokemon is such an old franchise that it should be getting better, not worse. To play a game that glitches this much is unacceptable. They dont need to rush these, were willing to wait, the people who grew up with the games have made that clear. But the fact that they dont take that time, or build their team enough to do what they need to do. Theres just so many aspects working against them that there doesnt need to be. These games made me realize that we could be getting such a grand experience from them, but GF simply isnt providing it for whatever reason. As someone that grew up with pokemon I just wanna see it get better and utilize the advancing technology's that we have available to us. I dont need realistic graphics, but a completed game would be amazing.

Damn, that conclusion woke me up. I'm not even joking. It opened my eyes to the state of Pokemon by today's standards. People always compared the now-to-then of everything and how the now is most often better, but for video games, it's different. Pokemon is a prime example that the now can be worse. That rotting machine either needs to be updated and expanded upon, or it needs to be shut down. For good. Nintendo and Gamefreak have a choice to make, let's hope they make it and stick to it.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again:
Every flaw in the main games are the direct result if the entire franchise, especially the merchandising, being on a strict and unstopping time table. Other franchises that have as strict, or even tighter, release schedules than Pokemon do much better because those companies put the money they make back into the games to at least justify having such short turnaround times. Why would I buy an annual release game to have to replay everything I already played if the next game isn't going to have better graphics, tighter controls, new innovations, or progress the franchise in some way?
Yet, Pokemon does exactly that, and Game Freak refuses to take the money and actually put it to use by hiring more staff or subsidizing competent studios to handle some of the work load. Instead, they train their junior staff on the mainline games while the experienced people get relegated to side projects.
Yes! Finally someone mentioned that we cant watch our friend's gym battles. Played through the game together with my friend and oh boy were we disappointed when we reached the first Gym
man pokemon sv just made me miserable. one of my biggest gripes is my character doesnt feel like me at all due to my reaction to story/3 paths moments being completely different to my character's reaction. the ending of the game was so bad for me because arven was happy. After finding all of that out i couldnt have imagined the ending being hunky dory road trip. wheres the absolute devastation??? the gym challenge also suffered hard with the unique type themed gyms of past now being eradicated, as well as the gyms just being plain easier. i found nemona to be over bearing and just wanted to get away from her. the lack of choice in the game really contradicted with the open worldness so it worsened my experience. the close pop in of pokemon really ruined immersion for me. the lack of in-world npc interactions/events as well as empty cities made the game really really hollow. the worst part is the performance which completely ruined the experience as i just kept thinking of the money i spent on the game as well as pokemon being the biggest franchise when frame drops happened(frame drops happened always).
Haven't played a Pokémon game since finishing sword and shield. I will refuse to play these games until I actually see something worthwhile

This may seem like a weird thing to point out, but I like how you and I both seem to agree that the "every NPC is the happiest damn person on earth and thinks you're Keanu Reeves" thing needs to stop. It's not like Pokemon was always a masterclass of writing, but at least some older Pokemon characters challenged you and felt a bit more human. These, meanwhile, are coding strings and algorithms and formulas, but it's all cold and dead. Just have someone insult me, Game Freak, come on. At least *try* to immerse me.
I guess Nintendo, Gamefreak, and the other company have nowhere to go this time, because the internet is flooded with heavy criticism. They do deserve it all, even though I still really like the game, they simply can't be releasing unfinished, scrappy beta versions

I shared so many of these opinions and hearing them back really made me realize that I have been settling when it comes to pokemon... I'm unfortunately still in love with the series
Biggest issues the Gen 9 games tends repeat too much during the gameplay.
1. Fire Staters Favoritism. If the company keeps on favoring the Fire Starters over the two selection starters types, what is point the starter trio then? Seriously, it seem very salty towards pokemon like Blastoise, Sceptile, Swampert, Torterra, Samurott, Greninja, Decidueye, Primarina, Rillaboom and Inteleon for not being fire types or simply having good designs. It feels like they are trying make the Fire Starters way better than the rest.
Gen 10 should give all the starter evolutions trio good designs and stop favoring one over the others.
2. Type Coverage limitations. Why the type selections seem very limited? It seems the single typings pokemon had their original secondary type remove for no reasons. It is jarring they don't want more than one repeating dual typings for new pokemon that is useful like another Grass/Fire, Fire/Water, Grass/Water, Electric/Ice, Ice/Water, Electric/Psychic, Electric/Grass, Ice/Fire, Ice/Fairy, Rock/Grass, Ground/Flying, Poison/Psychic, Fairy/Water and Steel/Fire types. Or unused dual typings that is not regional forms like Ice/Poison, Ground/Fairy, Rock/Ghost and Normal/Bug types.
3. Paradox pokemon. All the paradox pokemon are okay and interesting ideas. But, making them way too similar to Ultra Beasts is dumb. Couldn't they let be their breeding group for future games? Nope of course not.
4. Gen 1 favoritism. Stop with Kanto Pokemon pandering. It is extremely annoying and it needs to let other generation pokemon a chance to shine. The convergent pokemon seem like a excuse to create Gen 1 pokemon copies and screwing over other generation pokemon like Gen 7 regional forms again.
5. Regional forms. The game was so rush, only two regional forms. Tauros has three forms. It felt like a punch to the face for simply asking for other generation pokemon get regional forms over Gen 1 mons. Geez, they even push out pokemon Alolan Vulpix, Alolan Marowak, Galarian Yamask and Galarian Darumaka evolutionary lines out way because they are pretty popular. Too bad they didn't made Sinnohan and more Paldean forms for the games to expand type selections choices.
6. Pokemon Designs. It range from awesome to WFT is that. Some are perfect and rest tend to be forgettable at times. Past Paradox are awesome. Wish the Future Paradox pokemon weren't just "robotic" versions, how about the next batch like future evolution instead cyborgs. Since Paldea based on Spain, where the water dog, fighting predatory birds and other Spain based on animals that never was introduced in the games? They really could've had a ice, water, grass and flying type canine pokemon or a water, rock, ground and ghost feline pokemon. Weird they add a standalone parrot pokemon. But, they won't add a fighting type vulture evolutionary line.
7. Single Stage. If is only legendary or mythical Pokemon, it's fine. But, they keep on going back certain Pokemon like Grafarig, Zigzagoon, Stantler and Basculin to give them needed evolutions. Which is obviously to say "Just give every pokemon a pre evolution or farther evolution that isn't hassle to get like Mantyke or Feebass?" Really, Meowth gets another evolution line and Shuckle or Mimikyu gets no evolutions? Why?
8. Pokemon League. Paldea champion should've had a all Paldea team like Cynthia or Diantha. Victory Road could've had trainers across world battling for the champion position against the player.
9. Post Game. The four legendaries should've been post game and actually play a bigger role in the game like the Paldea King descendant seeking power by controlling the four legendaries. But, failing due to the player interferences.
10. Voice Actors. Again? So, Pokemon Masters are allowed to have voice overs. But, the main game series get nothing? Why? Just have the characters in the games with speaking lines say "kid", "boy", "girl" or "player" instead of saying their name.
Positives
1. Team Star. They are the oddest and outrageous team in the game. Best sympathetic team since Team Skull. It is upgraded version over Team Yell. Penny being the true leader behind the scenes was cool.
2. Gym Leaders. They have great themes based the jobs they positions in. It is unfair they assigned to limited type coverages on their team under Geeta's hypocritical rules at times. Larry is still the best gym leaders next to Iono, Kofu and Tulip.
3. Music soundtracks. Most sounds pretty good.
Conclusion
At this point, keep wishing Pokemon company would listen to constructive criticisms as form of corrections. So far they finally decided to make new protagonists for the Pokemon anime after nine generations. Still really hoping they try not rushing out the games and improve the games for the better.
Four biggest requests for the next game.
1. Stop making tutorials on unskipppable . Nobody like sitting through a 30 mins or hour tutorials forcing upon the player. Just make it like Kalos tutorials, short and quick access to the wonder trades.
2. Pokemon Daycare. Just remove lower caretaker price to 100 than 500. The picnic seems like a meh at best.
3. Pokemon Refresh and Pokemon Amie. Both of this systems were perfect on their own. They should reused one of them again. Except, add features like pokemon moving around like pokemon camp.
4. Just hired anime singers or someone who can create a anime song for the games. The Ed Sheeran song in the ending felt really off.
5. Accessible buildings.
6. The Chibis again. They should've stayed with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Chibis style, looking both appealing and easier to manage on building structures since they are going do 2 or 3 years cycle again.

I wont lie, I acknowledge the flaws and do wish they would put more detail and quality into the mainline games but for me at least, 2022 gave me 2 good pokemon games.
Legends Arceus and Scarlet and Violet have recaptured that magic for me and I really hope they do for other people eventually so they can love it like I do.
Or they make people hate Pokémon even more and make them quit Pokémon for good for better rpgs.
I'm willing to bet 60$ that the area0 experience is what Gamefreak have been trying to turn pokemon into since generation six.
If the Area0 character interactions is what you want, I'm betting that the next Gen will be built around that.
My main problem with Scarlet and Violet is tera raids. How can you make this the new main gimmick or feature and have it be so broken? Even with how broken azumarill huge power play rough is in tera raids, it is still considered I guess the meta for tera raids. Thats not even mentioning the broken timer, cheers, and just how the tera pokemon gets so many turns at once that can take out your pokemon and then take a big chunk out of the timer and you have to wait for your pokemon to come back out, like you can't even cheer? Plus if you are playing with NPCs and your pokemon faints, everyone just sits there and waits with you for your pokemon to come back out! So no progress is being made and you just watch the timer go down. I hate tera raids, like how did you make me want to go back to sword and shields max raids? How did you, Pokemon, make a previously considered so bad pokemon game look better then your most recent one? Sure you can say that about every pokemon game coming out but you shouldn't be able to say that! A game that comes out after a previous one in a series is supposed to improve, not make you look back fondly on previous games. Sorry I ranted in your comments, just wish pokemon would do better, not regress.

With said school setting, I almost feel like they should take a few pages from digimon's playbook. Through school, you can learn about pokemon potential (EV/IVs) learning about friendship, higher friendship the better, and pokemon breeding (Bred pokemon having higher IVs and maxed friendship to start towards their breeder). Things that will actually make you a better trainer, with in game knoledge that can even make you a better player.
Also note...remove terrsalize. Instead, use what the story is using. Bring back Mega-evolution, BUT now a new mega-evolution method (because man did they just hate it so much) in Paradox-evolution.

A phantasy star universe like style with dungeons and party members for story beats and assigned as a battle partner would be awesome. It doesn't even have to be open world if they took the story seriously. Of course, voice acting would be cool as well.

To touch on the voice acting part. I agree, and its not the first time this franchise had voice acting too! I still remember how awkward it was to see Pierse or however his name is spelt sing. Yet a DS game had voice acting?
To solve the player name issue voice actors face they could simply address you with a general term like "my friend" for example. As for actual names? Just the ones the game generates will be spoken. As for how often said vocie acting occurs it should just be during at scripts and cutscenes ala totk and botw or mhs2. As for the rest? Give us general grunts or something when speaking to npcs.
I just got the game recently and its still as bad graphically, frame rate and overall optimization. When going to the boxes it loads the menu faster than the transition. I did notice how the models switch from low to high poly versions and just being amazed they're using a standard technique.

I seriously would've preferred if the battle system stayed the same from gen 7, I seriously love the old formula and I really don't like all the new gimmicks they're adding, I stopped playing Pokemon games at Shield, it was the last one I played but I didn't like that game at all.The last game I really liked was USUM. It also would've been really nice if they didn't kill of mega evolution or Z Moves, because again I loved those mechanics but GameFreak clearly didn't care enough about them. I'm also not gonna lie, I kinda wish they would stop adding new mons to the game, we already have a decent amount and I prefer the older ones, new regions isn't a bad thing at all, and neither are the new mons. But I'd love to just stick to the old ways of doing things. I also don't prefer the open world. I miss the linear and small routes and cities.
I feel that at the core concepts of the game Pokémon SV had the potential to be one of if not the best Pokémon game ever however the execution and lack of depth killed that potential. I think this video nailled it and I hope if they ever remake Pokémon SV they adress these issues and make it the game it deserved to be.

So the reason I clicked on this video was because, well, I agreed with the title, the "thesis" if you will.
I enjoyed my time with SV more so than SwSh. However, once I finished it I felt much the same way I did after gen4. Basically this game has been largely the same for the last 10 years with no real change. I ignored gen5 when it was released until I had some friends tell me that there was an actual story, that the evil team was more of a focus, something I had wanted since gen3 executed the idea(poorly imo).
I ended up loving gen 5, it was the 1st time I got the "3rd version"(I know it was an actual sequel but my point remains)
So it brought me back to the series, which then started taking steps backward from gen5's setup but I kept going because I had hope. Oras was great XY not so much so it was becoming up and down.
Gen8 was the biggest disappointment to me. with its focus on the gym challenge so much so that you didn't even get to be a part of the story until the climax.
I got gen9 because I wanted to give the series a last chance. And i liked a lot of what was there, but like you said(essentially) it was barebones. The school was a great idea, but it wasn't fleshed out, same with the Team Star bases, and the Titan pokemon. So much wasted potential that while I enjoyed my time, unless I see evidence of big changes for gen10, I will not be returning to the mainline series anytime soon.

I would argue the thing they are good at had been declining, people have just lowered their standards, very few of the new pokemon are actually good. I hate most the pokemon from this generation, i like about 10 evo lines and the rest could be erased IMO, fan arts have a better idea of what a pokemon should be then the actual game creators.
My hope for this franchise if for new management to take over and make changes that will benefit the mainline games, but as it stands right now I don't think I'll ever be returning to this franchise or it's fanbase.
