  • I finally got the 4P working perfectly, 2.5 years* after I got it. All it needed was a new toner cartridge. This video shows the first tests after installing the new cartridge.
This was filmed last year, so it was only 1.5 years between getting the printer and getting a new cartridge for it. This is why you've actually seen the printer present in my room for the past year - I have been using it and it continues to work perfect.

I have an HP LaserJet 4P that I bought new for $995.00 in 1993 and still use it daily. Original sealed HP cartridges are available for $10.00 on eBay. No problems except the hinges on the door, but you can work around that. No other problems at all. The LaserJet 4 series were one on the best printers ever made.

I have three of these all working in 2017. I got them free when they were replaced with new versions at work in 1999. I have one as my main printer on my home network using a Parallel to USB cable windows 7.

I'd inspect the fuser rollers and pick fingers. They can cause those similar problems. If in doubt, start a print so some area is under the drum and some through the fuser and force stop/jam the printer and inspect...if lines, specs under drum but before fuser, that's the area of problem if other way around then fuser the problem. :)

It brings back a lot of memories seeing this video, I do have a service manual for these but I believe these are long beyond the tooth, being at least 4 ppm, too slow for today's standards but back in 1993 it was a start of the art personal laser printer, and it still can be used by people whom are patient. they were half decent when I started the only thing that is going for these ones is that it has 600DPI, the reason why that it has black over the toner is that the wiper blade is shot, nothing to do with fuses, there is no fuses in the toner cartridge circuit, the only part would be the faulty power supply and he got it right that the DC controller which is part of the power supply caused the issue, and there is no corona wires on the machine, most of the time you can disconnect the connectors and reconnect and it would work again, I had that more than once, I managed to resurrect machines with that very technique, over the years, that's where the service manual helps, lose cables can cause these issues.

That was really weird, you going from "piece of rubbish, throw it out", to posting a long comment of sentiments and useful information.

themaritimeman they were popular machines when new, but OEM toners have been discontinued for years but the wiper blade needs a clean with plastic cleaner. Very carefully and such.

I guess you should be fine as long as you handle it like a raw egg.

That's why I aim for generic cartridges usually.

I actually prefer to stay away from generic cartridges - Mom has bought them for her inkjet printer and they were all nothing but trouble. Maybe toner would be different, though.

***** I've only bought generic for HP toner cartridges and they've been really good, but yeah I never would trust inkjet generic cartridges, I feel like they'd clog the jets!

Wrong, there is no fuses in the toner cartridge circuit, and I have the service manual for these, I suggest to get a service manual off the net and take it apart carefully.

Try printing a few pages of income tax forms...that'll cause a memory overload. If you have AUTOCONT set to on then you'll find the pages just start getting leaner in content. I know because that's the reason I added 12 Mb. of ram to my 4P.

I bought a new old stock toner cartridge for my Laserjet 1200 and sadly it left gray marks as well.

@tall_dude1233 I restored hundreds of Q7115A and Canon analog (EP-27) to working conditions. All you need is new Wiper blade(HP LJ 1100), doctor blade(HP LJ 1010), talcum powder, couple of screwdrivers and clear mind. If cartridge not in use for 1 year after production date - rubber surfaces loose its elasticity leaving toner on Drum surface, as a result toner on PCR which is not great to clean prints.

Hello, I have such a printer, I specially bought an adapter ltp-usb, I tried to connect to a computer with Windows 10, downloaded universal drivers, but for some reason the computer does not see the printer connection, and wrote that error 28, no driver found for USB2.0

There's no way to make these work on Windows 10 or 11 anymore, that I know of.

themaritimeman I have a laserjet 4p that is having the same problem that you stated in the beginning of the video. Where did you find the forum that says to take the printer apart to fix it?
