Well if you were googling their 'original' drummer it shouldn't have led you here, Santana had several drummers before Michael before they recorded any albums. The drummer prior to Mike was a guy named Johnny Rae, who had only been in the band about a month after replacing the drummer before him, Bob Livingston who was their drummer from 67/68. Michael Shrieve joined the band during the recording of the first album and of course Mike was the drummer at Woodstock, which to his dismay is all most people seem to remember him for, despite the fact he's had a lengthy and very diverse career. When Michael quit the band in 1974 Santana recruited Leon 'Ndugu' Chancler who played on the Amigos album in 1976, he was then replaced by Gaylord Birch who played on Festival in 1977. Carlos Santana was on an airplane flying between gigs one day late in 1976 and heard a Gino Vanelli song on the onboard earphones, he loved the drumming in the song and immediately went about finding out who it was and went about luring him into Santana, that drummers name was Graham Lear. People often mistook him for Mike Shrieve as he was a dead ringer for him, with the same long curly hair that Mike had at Woodstock. Graham was also an amazing player, every bit as good as Michael and then some imo. Graham was in Santana for close to 11 years between 1976 to 1987. After leaving them he went on to play with REO Speedwagon and Paul Anka among others.
Oh Michael. I remember the days when we still had hair -- and you took Woodstock by storm in 1969 with the most unforgettable drum solo I've ever heard! I can take one listen to a drum ride, and know it's you.
Still have it Mike, good for you.Played the drums for 47yrs of my life til my sickness took the sticks out of my hands.I sure miss it.Those were the days.Enjoy while you can.
This dude is ferocious on the drums. Michael Schrieve still rocks the skins for the band, Spellbinder. He was 20 at Woodstock, thats 47 yrs. & he is still going. Wow man you're just so groovy. Peace,Love, Passion Flower
Spellbinder is an orchestra where Michael Schrieve sits right up front and rocks the skins. Incredible. He played with Santanna at Woodstock & for 5 more years. Reminds me of another intoxicating drummer, "Bonzo" of you know who, Zeppelin., Passion Flower
the palm up, open left hand is the traditional hold, still used by Schrieve a lot, and most often by jazz and classical musicians. Rockers switch it to the big end of the drumstick in a closed overhand position for a fatter sound, especially on the snare
The "Traditional grip" was from back when drummers were marching with infantry soldiers and the single snare drum was slung off to one side, and the matched grip we know today, would be wildly uncomfortable. It can easily be used on modern drum sets with little to no drum set configurations, but many drummers prefer one set up for grip. There's a good Buddy Rich explanation if you find yourself so interested.
The man who gave the very best of all the sterling performances at Woodstock.
Love it...Michael Shrieve cleanest drummer ever. I Love how hes not aggressive, just in the sweet spot of the beat. ❤
Probably one of the most famous and yet underrated drummer ever!
He is not underrated.

Uno de los mejores baterista del mundo
What a journey for him. To me up there with Sandy Nelson, Buddy Rich, Gene Grupa.
Your kick drum sounds fantastic ! Kudos.
Uno de los mejores Bateristas del Planeta Tierra.
Just discovered Michael's talents today with his Woodstock performance! Wow! Amazing drummer! Thanks for sharing this gem! 👌😊
Quelle année plu t'a are encore toujours la
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🥁
Thank you for showing you don't need to set up an entire catalogue of drums to be a drummer...
It depends on the needs, I think. I cannot imagine Neil Peart (rest in peace) playing Rush songs without his catalogue of drums.
Some where along the line Michael Shrieve changed the way he holds the stick with his left hand. What's up with that?
