- Living in Westchester County, NY: The pros and cons [my honest opinion] - You're thinking about relocating to Westchester County, NY because you're either relocating from another state, need a change from the concrete jungle that is NYC, maybe your job allows you to work remotely and you have children so space and school are important to you.
These reasons were big for my family and I when we moved to Yonkers, NY just a year ago. In this video I share with you exactly my pros and cons of my move to Westchester county as it relates to my personal experience after living here for exactly 12 months now.

I grew up in the Bronx and I told myself I would never raise a family there. Now I am in Scarsdale, New York, we basically have no major crime here every year. My son could go to one of the best schools with no problem, as I always worried about so much in the Bronx. Yes the property taxes are really high but I get one of the best school systems and police departments with it. The only downside is it’s quiet. Fourth of July I’m the only one having a barbecue and shooting fireworks in my neighborhood. I invite everyone over, but very few neighbors come, as the Bronx was always jumping 24 seven always something to do people hanging out in front people hanging out in the back. Actually, I think more people hung out in the front because everyone had small backyards in the Bronx. Which is here everyone has such nice houses and nice yards and no one uses them. I’m literally the person in my backyard or sitting on my stoop Old Bronx style no one else does it, that could get a little depressing. It’s like where is everybody? No one‘s having a barbecue but me I wanna smell it in the air so I do miss the Brox just because of the action but I needed to be someplace safe for my family, so I had no choice.

@@blznrumraizin5 thank you. Not sure why none of my neighbors do lol it’s a ghost town all year. I guess you can’t have it all but I do miss the noise and action sometimes.
I moved to New Rochelle one year ago, my youngest daughter is 13 years old, she got used to this suburban area so fast, the sport opportunity has been her priority. Neighbors in New Rochelle talk to each other and do things together. The towns compete in sport every weekend, so your kids will keep you busy and moving all the time. ❤
I’m your neighbor I’m probably only a mile away from New Rochelle. I’m very close to Wilmont Avenue.

I was born and bred in new Rochelle many moons ago. I couldn’t have lived in a better place. Suburban yet easy access to nyc. The best of both worlds. Of course it’s more expensive now but if you can swing it I highly recommend westchester.

A big change in location is where I am in Upstate Hudson Falls NY.
I grew up in Washington Heights NYC, went to HS in the Bronx, attended Iona College in New Rochelle, then moved to Yonkers,NY in my 20s when I had my 3 daughters.
It’s great there. Close to the city and lots to do and good places to eat and shop.
Plus my daughters went to a Montessori School there. A big plus !

I’ve been in the Bronx for 30 years and I’m finally moving out of the Boroughs. I’m retired now and looking forward to more suburban living .

I lived in the Bronx from 1973 when I was born to about 1995 my families from the Bronx they had a bakery there in the 50s and 60s. I loved where I am in Westchester. It’s just so quiet but I did it from my wife and son, as I didn’t want my son going through the same things I did in the Bronx or worried about getting jumped after school. It’s just so quiet here no one has barbecues not even for the Fourth of July. I am literally the only house I see and smell that have barbecues actually all year I don’t know where my neighbors are, I don’t know if it’s because everyone has a little more money so they’re either away on vacation or someone else’s house but it’s a little depressing specially on the Fourth of July I’m the only house with a barbecue and friends over and you know I do my fireworks still
@@blznrumraizin5 Hi a year later and I’ve finally made it out of the Bronx , I’m in Westchester County Cortlandt Manor , oh your so right I absolutely love living here . Every window that I looked out of gives me a view of trees, greenery and roaming deer, my husband and I absolutely love living in Westchester county however, New York is fabulous. The city is fabulous to visit for plays and shows and entertainment so I feel like I am blessed enough to have the best of both worlds. I’m 45 minutes from the Bronx and maybe another 15 minutes to go into Manhattan so that being said, I live in a suburban area now, but I still have access to the city if I want to go there, but I would never want to live there again in the city. I love New York it’s so diverse . My slogan is from the Hood to The Woods .😊🎉🙏🏾🎉👍From Roaches to Termites lol 😂
Thanks for sharing your insight on Westchester County. I relocated from the south five years ago, but grew up in Chicago. I love New York City, but I crave the suburban lifestyle so much and can't not wait to explore more of Westchester County. I've visited upstate New York several times, as far as, Poughesie, (not willing to go that far though, lol), and find it so beautiful. I am saying all of this to say, I am encouraged by your video and more importantly your honesty in living upstate.

Westchester has become a place for people to live while working in the boroughs. Especially here in New Rochelle. I can tell you yes it is convenient, but at the same time it also ruining any sense of community being that most people don't live here long enough to truly call it home anymore.
Sense of community is very much lost at large. However, some of these pocket neighborhoods you definitely feel that tight knit feel! Wishing you well and thanks for commenting!
I don't mean to disagree with you but I grew up in Larchmont with my sister and parents from 1960 to 1972 when we then moved to Rye. While I did work in Connecticut I also committed to Grand Central Terminal over a 30-year period. Dad passed in 2019 at the age of 90 my parents were married 63 years. Although the house has been sold to go to my mother's continued healthcare and I will admit I'm out of touch because I've been a Chelsea Manhattan resident since 2004 but I do distinctly remember and a strong sense of community is there that still prevails.
On occasion I do return home for other reasons and there's still a sense of community. There are many long-time or lifetime residents of towns in Westchester.
Where I am in Scotdale New York the community is not so big here neither my neighbor to the left is from the Bronx like me my neighbor across the street is from the Bronx. There’s only a few houses on my block but it doesn’t have that community. Feel maybe because people in the Bronx live there so long they also hung out on their stoop and they met people and they talk to people, it’s not like that no more people have these nice backyards and don’t even hang out in their backyards for the Fourth of July or memorial day or Labor Day. I’m the only one going to barbecue it’s crazy I don’t know if growing up in the Bronx people had less money so they hung around the house more, we didn’t have big backyard so we hung out in the front. We also didn’t have big houses so we went outside as much as we could. But yes I’ve been in my house now and Scarsdale for 12 years and it’s definitely a nice safe location but it doesn’t have that old-school vibe of everyone knowing each other. I have to say my neighbors to the left and right are really nice my neighbors across from me the husband’s nice but the wife looks like she always has something to prove I mean there’s a bunch of kids, my son’s age within a few block radius, and they all like strangers. I tried multiple times to get the kids together but you could see they want no part I mean the literally the same age as my son and they make it a point to not be friendly so I give them the old Bronx F U lol
@@blznrumraizin5 I kinda agree with you there when I lived in the Bronx, everyone was there for so long that there was a sense of community, but where I am now in Scarsdale everybody is here within the last 10 or 15 years and everyone keeps to themselves, I do have two nice neighbors to the left and right of me to the left another family from the Bronx but they were here longer than me probably about 25 years and the family to the right they are here about eight years but I get what you’re saying. People from the Bronx those neighborhoods were there for 30 or 40 years and you kind of need those deep roots. Let’s put it this way. No one‘s coming over to borrow a box of sugar lol

After moving out of the Bronx from living there my whole life Yonkers was my first place in Westchester. And what’s funny is living in the Bronx the north end I would always go to Cross County. I basically grew up there from the early 70s to early 90s when I moved to Yonkers, I moved on a nice cul-de-sac that had three buildings right off Yonkers Avenue. One block up from Bronx River Road. It was a nice area we had Carvel right up the block McDonald’s right up the block and that’s where we hung out at probably 21 or 22 years old, I actually worked at that Colville when I was still living in the Bronx and what’s funny is I met my wife at that Carvel when I moved over there she worked at the same Carvel maybe 10 years after me so Yonkers will always hold a special spot. Plus my wife grew up in Yonkers. She went to the high school there Grammar school there.

I moved to Mount Vernon last year. I hate it here. Looking to move back to brooklyn asap never coming back to this hell hole
Mount Vernon is tricky one of my first jobs in the 80s was on fourth Avenue in Mount Vernon but you have Mount Vernon and then when my mom dad and sister lived Fleetwood which is a tiny part of Mount Vernon, the nicer area way less crime, etc. growing up in the Bronx, I was right on the border of Mount Vernon literally two blocks away And anytime we had trouble it always came from Mount Vernon every single time it was almost like they had something to prove so they had to come in the Bronx and mess around. But out of all of Westchester, Mount Vernon is probably close to the least desirable, and that’s just talking crimes statistic wise.
Property taxes are so high. Can you do a video on best parts of the county for taxes?

In westchester, what do you think is better Yonkers or Rye? I'm looking to relocate to either or, we are a young married couple looking for a suburban feel as we want to expand our family but not as rural, I don't know if I explained myself correctly. Thanks in advance.
Well, that's amazing! Welcome to Westchester (in advance) - It all depends; the great thing about Yonkers is that you have great convenience in and out of the city and will have plenty of suburban communities to select from. Rye, however, will surely have more suburbia, but it is just a bit farther out (but not rural).
Rye is more expensive but better Yonkers I'd live further up warbuton ave

Haha yea it can be, you have homes where taxes are $10k and once you cross the major road for instance (central Ave) taxes jump up $15k-$17k.
Some of the more developed neighborhoods in the Bronx for instance Riverdale, taxes on a single family home range between $7k-$9k for non-luxury homes.
I have a one family home in Scarsdale. My texts are really close to 30 grand a year and that is high but we have the best school systems in crime is nonexistent here so if you have a kid or children I recommended sometimes I curse at the taxes, but then I see my sons school and if the police department is ever needed. They’re at your door within seconds so at least you get what you pay for here but yes the taxes are not for the faint of heart. Guess you look at it this way we’re 45 minutes from Times Square in a town with almost no crime or at least no major crime, Yonkers has major crime. Mount Vernon has major crime. New Rochelle even has a little bit of crime, but you have some towns like Scarsdale Eastchester, Tuckahoe Bronxville. Those towns are almost crimeless. I’m not talking about a stolen car I’m talking about major crime. So you’re gonna pay a little more taxes in those towns, but they all have the same thing in common good school systems good police departments they take care of the roads but I see a lot of people when they retire they can’t afford the property taxes anymore I don’t want to pay for them so then they move, maybe me one day as well
Westchester is overpriced given it has no damn industry, most of its residents have to commute to NYC to find work, yet homes are half a million and more. At least Jersey can say they have a well known great school system for their tax prices, Westchester, eh...Nonetheless, Westchester is gorgeous!
Westchester is a county, and can’t take credit for what a STATE has or doesn’t have, because NJ is huge, and just like NY, not ALL counties are the same. Westchester is home of some of the best school’s in the state. Industry? Westchester aims to preserve its urban centers and rural landscapes, and everything in between, it’s not Manhattan. Yet some of the biggest Fortune 500 companies are headquartered here (Dannon, IBM, Pepsi, Regeneron, Mastercard, Heineken).
Westchester businesses generate more than $1Billion in annual payroll.
@@blznrumraizin5 Fair enough, a better comparison would be Bergen County. They have great public schools, I doubt Westchester cracks top 20. They're better than NY state, but NY has a low bar. If I'm gonna spend the money I'd pick Bergen county.
@@RocknRollDina Westchester County's schools are ranked among the best in the country. Feel free to look it up. So are NJ's schools, as a state it's one of the best states for schools. But districts like Scarsdale, Bronxville, and many more are among the best in the entire US. In fact, I'd say the main reason most families move to Westchester is 100% because of the schools. And New York State ranks anywhere from 9th to 13th best state for schools. And New Jersey has not one school in its state that comes remotely close to the level of NYC's specialized high schools.
Lol, I live in Dutchess County. City slickers have been moving up to Columbia County only accessible with Amtrak. It's to get away from the Metro North commuters.
@@RocknRollDina It's about status. New Jersey has a lower status. It's better to have a zip code in the Empire State vs the Garden State. And NY is a gorgeous state, something NJ isn't always upfront about. 😀
