Don’t feel too bad about braking the window, I’ve built trails with an excavator in the woods for the past 10 years and dealing with brush is one of the most dangerous things you can do in my opinion. When possible we try to get excavators with out cabs just because we’ve broken so many cabs. If you guys are still wanting to get rid of that bolder on the corner you should be able to rent a jackhammer attachment for your excavator and it’ll blow through that rock pretty easily. Also another note that might help is if your trying to move around a big rock try driving backwards with the blade facing the rock and pull the rock towards you, I’ve moved rocks like this that I couldn’t even flip over with the machine. I would also be happy to help if you need any other excavator advice.
In case you don't want to use explosives or worry about the danger, there is a product called expanding grout. Dexpan is one company that makes it. You drill the deep holes, Fill with grout and add water. It takes a while, but will expand and split the rock.

Just an idea…. When you get the glass replaced go get some clearer window tint plastic and rap the inside of the cab glass. The window glass on most of the dirt equipment is tempered and is designed to shatter into small pieces so as to not cut you to death. The plastic wrap will catch the pieces before they go all over you and the floor. Won’t stop a tree from going through the window
Rock breaking tip. Use a drill and "Feathers", you'll be amazed how much you can clear. or the expensive way, as someone pointed out, excavator attachment.
Lesson learned… that is the easiest and most common excavator window to break… y’all might want to consider a forestry poly windshield and or a forestry cage since you will most likely still be doing this kind of work for a while yet. Most importantly y’all weren’t hurt… count your blessings. 😊❤️
Stuff like that is bound to happen. Even with mundane things like driving a car. It takes years to learn the strange ways things can go wrong and even then odd things will happen that even surprise a pro with years of experience . Important to reflect a bit on it and think what if? Logging machines have mesh cage in case timber comes in pointy end first. A cage might not be warranted in a small road building project, but mind that timber. Glad you are ok.
Yep, the polycarbonate windows and cages will protect you up to the point where the cab would be crushed, so try to avoid that Plus they work against bears and small groups of zombies

As long as things are higher than you, they can come down to you… My friends father stepped out of his excavator. He heard a bang behind him. He turned and watched the excavator got blown away by a 40 ton boulder… Scaery but building roadwork is serious stuff… You are doing great!!!

It's a lot easier to show the easy moments, but I'm glad that we are able to share ALL of them with you. A friend once told us that there will be lots of high, and lows but if we can figure out how to ride the middle it makes everything better.

Hi guys, another major step done. The excavator is repairable and Courtney you were unhurt. The scary thought is if the window and frame wasn't there to stop the tree chunk. A blaster can pop that boulder out of there in an hour if you really want it gone. Just remember....if it was easy, every one would be doing it. Rock on! 😎
Courtney every operator has one of those moments. It is repairable and your pride will heal. We all have little oops moments and we all just hope they are ones that we live through and not hurt ourselves or anyone else. Guys explosives will do it but there is also other stuff, expanding foam or as the old timers did it they used feathers (metal wedges) to split the rocks. Get yourself an impact drill and drill bits of various lengths to get down into the rock for the feathers or foam to work.

Say try to keep the spirits high. Everyone is ok ,no injuries. Been a heavy equipment mechanic for 35 years a seen many front glasses and cabs torn up. It hurts the pocket book for awhile but glass can be replaced. Body parts can’t.
Altering the course of a mountain road is an almost impossible undertaking, at the limits of human possibilities, even having all the experience and knowledge of a true professional. In spite of everything, you have not been discouraged and you are completing, with a thousand hazards and difficulties, a work that defining epic does not quite convey the idea. I am happy that Courtney came out unscathed from that accident and that all in all the risks you are running are limited to a minimum, thanks to the solidity of the means and equipment you are using and your ability to assess and adequately face any danger. You are a great team and I love you🤗💚💪✌️👍🍀
That's what I'm worried about. It's not just the making of this road. It's whether it will actually stay there due to weather, erosion, etc. Hopefully it works out. Good drainage will be key as well as low erosion above and below. Probably as many trees should be left as possible and some planting of something on the downside.

You can get a hydraulic breaker attachment for your excavator. Might look into renting one. Allows you to hold it stable and put the weight of the machine on it.

Glad your okay Courtney and it is scary to have something to blow out the glass right in front of you. I have 1,000 of hours in an excavator and have taken out a ew panes of glass. There is a reason loggers have full cages because $hit happens, all comes with the territory. Your not digging holes to plant trees for landscaping 😉
Drill a half inch hole with a hammer drill bit about 18 to 24 inches into the rock and get the expanding Epoxy wait 24 hours rock cracks easy to move with excavator. You guys rock and keep up the great work!
Add in the winter time when it's really cold down to freezing, there use to be an old old 1930's quarry up on the hill in front of my house, they would drill the holes in rows in the rock laid out in regtangles and squares to whatever size that they wanted the cut rocks to be and then pour the drilled holes full of water and then the water would freeze and over the next day or two the rocks just busted apart and in the summer time they poured water in the drilled holes and then took wooden dowel rods the same size as the drilled holes and then they hammered the wooden rods down in the water filled holes and the hydraulic action busted the rocks apart . Making perfect big cut rocks to build retaining walls with to hold dirt back, or just rock walls, or build culvert head walls at the ends of the concrete water drain pipes, and use them to build buildings with, or use them for foundation walls, or use them as just individual pillars every so far apart to build buildings on, use them for steps, rock stairways, sidewalks, cellars and basements, chimneys and so on . Around where that I live there is lots of stuff made out of those cut rocks . 🤗👍💫

At this point there is not much else I could say to you guys that haven't been said already. The broken window is a minor accident in relation to everything that you two accomplish so far. Specially because it didn't physically hurt you. Again... amazing work!! Glad to see Courtney, physically wasn’t hurt…..maybe just a little bruised pride! But no matter how careful you are, when you have a cab, it’s pretty inevitable that you are going to break a window at some point. For whatever reason, on heavy equipment it just happens often. Don’t beat yourself up too bad. You aren’t the first and you definitely won’t be the last! Keep on being safe! You guys are doing great!
At the point of the rock you cannot remove, and where you had to extend the width of the road. Below that point build up with rip rap boulders to support the new road base. Plop big bolders a few feet away from the foot hill of road, creating a dam, the dump rock down from new road until the rip is almost touching new road. That side mass of riprap will stabilize you road over time.
We’ve all smacked ourselves with a tree or gotten in some tippy situation, you guys are really getting good use out of that machine. Now you’ll have to wear your beekeeper hat in the cab though lol. The new road looks great.
Probably goes without saying but I’m going to anyway.. when you replace that glass weld up a frame with some of that heavy mesh to cover that window actually that’s fairly common for that window to get broke especially when working with trees that heavy mesh is also added protection for the operator it’s unfortunate that it broke but as you know it can be very dangerous I’m glad Courtney wasn’t hurt good luck with the road

Luckily a piece of window/glass can easily be replaced :) For the boulder you should have rented a hammer for the excavator instead. Then you easily could have attacked it from multiple angles and with a lot more force :)
1. They make a jackhammer attachment for an excavator. It's hydraulic. 2. Look up "feathers and wedges". You can use the method to split the rock off and get it broken up. A lot less work, and danger.
When I saw the tears, I decided that Kubota had died like a true samurai. In an unequal battle with a treacherous enemy. It turned out that only the glass was damaged. What a relief!
Sweet girl, so glad the accident wasn't more serious. So, thankful YOU are safe. Dang, you two just don't do things halfway. What an accomplishment. The infrastructure of that road is going to last for years to come. Insurance people can be such meany heads!
The road project certainly escalated a bit after we got started. At first it was more of a "lipstick on a pig" plan, but ultimately we decided it would be better to just do the work now, while we had the equipment down there.

New to the channel and loving everything I've watched. As a full time excavator operator, you can't really call yourself an true operator unless you've broken a window. LoL. Even more so as an Operator doing a lot of land clearing such as yourselves. Keep up the great work. Loved watching the progress in your skills.
I am glad you did not get hurt Courtney. Chris on LETSDIG18 is an expert excavator operator and he put out his glass more than once. If you look at any logging equipment you will see guards in place at all the windows/doors. That`s because they know from experience trees are unpredictable at times. I suggested to Chris to put up removable guards, he did not want to have to look through the thick wire mesh all day. So he puts himself in danger to some degree every time he is logging with a machine designed to move dirt and rock. I suggested the same for Mike at DIRTPERFECT and he also does not want the hassle of taking on and off a guard system or looking through it. Their choice. I will now suggest the same to both of you to build your own removable/bolt-on guard system so you will not be put in full danger with only glass and one window divider to protect you. I told you from experience you should not use a chainsaw to cut anything that is above your waist, it is too dangerous to cut too high. Same thing with reaching for that tree that got you, sometimes it`s better to cut it off with a chain saw first then use the exc. Of course everything is 20/20 in hind sight. Construction is a dangerous industry and we always have to try to think ahead. My joking way of looking at that kind of stuff is I say, I have to be smarter than the tree! lol Or I have to be smarter than the rock, or tire, whatever I am working on. Even with guards on the machine, you will still need to be carefull. O.K. my dad type advice is done for now. Again, I am glad you were not hurt. Take care

Btw - I'd look to rent an excavator-size hammer and break down that rock, even though you've expanded around it so it's not the highest priority for you now.
i found you guys on youtube only yesterday but i wish i had found you sooner, the fact that you dare to show your emotions like so on camera gets you IMENSE respect from me. When it comes to renovating my house i try to do as much of the build myself, and those hard moment are so recognisable but you give yourself some space to say it and then continue again!! Courtney ask your Eye doctor to get the eye scratch dye for your rural first aid kit. It will show scratches. Tourniquets, gauze rolls triangle bandages, definitely gonna have to be the prepared one-Pneumatics pressure, I mentioned a CTIS ring that is what broke muther to get right hobbling regulated valves. Better to just order it.

Glad no one was hurt from that tree. Windows and cabs can be replaced, you both can't. Had a few close ones myself in my Army Engineer days with a D-8K Cat sliding off a trailer in a snow storm. Thought it was going over. Keep on moving forward you guys are gonna be successful!!
Guys you can buy armor will covers that will protect them out on them wheels there a little expensive. Maybe I don't remember it's been a while, but you can get them off-line and they help protect all them lines on the fields

Walk it off! The good news is you’re ok and it happens all the time. At our company it’s like a running joke about who’s going to be the first to knock the windshield out of a excavator. Just part of running equipment.

Yep: it doesn't look dangerous until it's rolling at you.

You could also try to drill holes and put feathers in the rock to split it.

Glad your okay Courtney and it is scary to have something to blow out the glass right in front of you. I have 1,000 of hours in an excavator and have taken out a ew panes of glass. There is a reason loggers have full cages because $hit happens, all comes with the territory. Your not digging holes to plant trees for landscaping 😉
Drill a half inch hole with a hammer drill bit about 18 to 24 inches into the rock and get the expanding Epoxy wait 24 hours rock cracks easy to move with excavator. You guys rock and keep up the great work!
yes on this! I've used it lots. DEXPAN I used 1.5" holes, and 1.25" holes. Works so good.
Add in the winter time when it's really cold down to freezing, there use to be an old old 1930's quarry up on
the hill in front of my house, they would drill the holes in rows in the rock laid out in regtangles and squares to whatever size that they wanted the cut rocks to be and then pour the drilled holes full of water and then the water would freeze and over the next day or two the rocks just busted apart and in the summer time they poured water in the drilled holes and then took wooden dowel rods the same size as the drilled holes and then they hammered the wooden rods down in the water filled holes and the hydraulic action busted the rocks apart . Making perfect big cut rocks to build retaining walls with to hold dirt back, or just rock walls, or build culvert head walls at the ends of the concrete water drain pipes, and use them to build buildings with, or use them for foundation walls, or use them as just individual pillars every so far apart to build buildings on, use them for steps, rock stairways, sidewalks, cellars and basements, chimneys and so on . Around where that I live there is lots of stuff made out of those cut rocks .

Thank God you broke that glass. I just ran one all weekend (rental). I put the window up to "protect" the glass. If you were as smart as me you would have been injured. At this point there is not much else I could say to you guys that haven't been said already. The broken window is a minor accident in relation to everything that you two accomplish so far. Specially because it didn't physically hurt you. Again... amazing work!! Glad to see Courtney, physically wasn’t hurt…..maybe just a little bruised pride! But no matter how careful you are, when you have a cab, it’s pretty inevitable that you are going to break a window at some point. For whatever reason, on heavy equipment it just happens often. Don’t beat yourself up too bad. You aren’t the first and you definitely won’t be the last! Keep on being safe! You guys are doing great!
At the point of the rock you cannot remove, and where you had to extend the width of the road. Below that point build up with rip rap boulders to support the new road base. Plop big bolders a few feet away from the foot hill of road, creating a dam, the dump rock down from new road until the rip is almost touching new road. That side mass of riprap will stabilize you road over time.
This is why I wear safety glasses whatever I am doing. Glad you guys are okay.

We’ve all smacked ourselves with a tree or gotten in some tippy situation, you guys are really getting good use out of that machine. Now you’ll have to wear your beekeeper hat in the cab though lol. The new road looks great.

Probably goes without saying but I’m going to anyway.. when you replace that glass weld up a frame with some of that heavy mesh to cover that window actually that’s fairly common for that window to get broke especially when working with trees that heavy mesh is also added protection for the operator it’s unfortunate that it broke but as you know it can be very dangerous I’m glad Courtney wasn’t hurt good luck with the road
Windshield and some parts for the excavator are probably not cheap foremost important thing nothing happened to !!!

Luckily a piece of window/glass can easily be replaced :)
For the boulder you should have rented a hammer for the excavator instead. Then you easily could have attacked it from multiple angles and with a lot more force :)
1. They make a jackhammer attachment for an excavator. It's hydraulic. 2. Look up "feathers and wedges". You can use the method to split the rock off and get it broken up. A lot less work, and danger.
When I saw the tears, I decided that Kubota had died like a true samurai. In an unequal battle with a treacherous enemy. It turned out that only the glass was damaged. What a relief!
Sweet girl, so glad the accident wasn't more serious. So, thankful YOU are safe. Dang, you two just don't do things halfway. What an accomplishment. The infrastructure of that road is going to last for years to come. Insurance people can be such meany heads!
The road project certainly escalated a bit after we got started. At first it was more of a "lipstick on a pig" plan, but ultimately we decided it would be better to just do the work now, while we had the equipment down there.

New to the channel and loving everything I've watched. As a full time excavator operator, you can't really call yourself an true operator unless you've broken a window. LoL. Even more so as an Operator doing a lot of land clearing such as yourselves. Keep up the great work. Loved watching the progress in your skills.

I am glad you did not get hurt Courtney. Chris on LETSDIG18 is an expert excavator operator and he put out his glass more than once. If you look at any logging equipment you will see guards in place at all the windows/doors. That`s because they know from experience trees are unpredictable at times. I suggested to Chris to put up removable guards, he did not want to have to look through the thick wire mesh all day. So he puts himself in danger to some degree every time he is logging with a machine designed to move dirt and rock. I suggested the same for Mike at DIRTPERFECT and he also does not want the hassle of taking on and off a guard system or looking through it. Their choice. I will now suggest the same to both of you to build your own removable/bolt-on guard system so you will not be put in full danger with only glass and one window divider to protect you. I told you from experience you should not use a chainsaw to cut anything that is above your waist, it is too dangerous to cut too high. Same thing with reaching for that tree that got you, sometimes it`s better to cut it off with a chain saw first then use the exc. Of course everything is 20/20 in hind sight. Construction is a dangerous industry and we always have to try to think ahead. My joking way of looking at that kind of stuff is I say, I have to be smarter than the tree! lol Or I have to be smarter than the rock, or tire, whatever I am working on. Even with guards on the machine, you will still need to be carefull. O.K. my dad type advice is done for now. Again, I am glad you were not hurt. Take care
Way to power through a very frustrating day, you two! Sucks for the broken panel, but most importantly, everyone is okay. Don't beat yourself so much, sh*t just happens sometimes. Btw - I'd look to rent an excavator-size hammer and break down that rock, even though you've expanded around it so it's not the highest priority for you now.

i found you guys on youtube only yesterday but i wish i had found you sooner, the fact that you dare to show your emotions like so on camera gets you IMENSE respect from me. When it comes to renovating my house i try to do as much of the build myself, and those hard moment are so recognisable but you give yourself some space to say it and then continue again!! The secret to using a jackhammer is, don't push down on it. Just hold it up and let it do all the work. It works better and it is less tiring.

Courtney ask your Eye doctor to get the eye scratch dye for your rural first aid kit. It will show scratches. Tourniquets, gauze rolls triangle bandages, definitely gonna have to be the prepared one-Pneumatics pressure, I mentioned a CTIS ring that is what broke muther to get right hobbling regulated valves. Better to just order it.

Glad no one was hurt from that tree. Windows and cabs can be replaced, you both can't. Had a few close ones myself in my Army Engineer days with a D-8K Cat sliding off a trailer in a snow storm. Thought it was going over. Keep on moving forward you guys are gonna be successful!!

Guys you can buy armor will covers that will protect them out on them wheels there a little expensive. Maybe I don't remember it's been a while, but you can get them off-line and they help protect all them lines on the fields
