    Thanks so much for making this video! This is the theory I've adhered to for a long time now, and it is nice to watch a video that offers a fairly comprehensive list of arguments for it whilst still pointing out it is a conjectural argument at this point. What makes me believe in this argument is the one principle the developers have announced; that not a single thing in the DA universe will ever confirm or deny the existence of the maker. Therefore, any theory pertaining to the Black City cannot confirm or deny the maker, and most of them do in some way. The Arlathan theory is simply the most logical, though arguments against it exist, mostly in related topics such as the old gods, the elven gods (and the ancient elves at that, whether they are one and the same or not) or the nature of the fade itself.
    Anyway, I digress; loved the video. I subscribed for future content, to which I am looking forward.

    Clearly the black city is a prison for the elven gods somehow and they were reaching out to the magisters to trick them into releasing them.

    Here's an even crazier theory. It has nothing to do with Arlathan, but everything to do with Tevinter.
    Short Version: Fen'Harel founded Tevinter.
    Long Version: We know Solas believes all organizations to be corrupt. When the Inquisitor responds that she trusts her friends to keep the Inquisition pure, Solas says he knows that mistake well. Call me crazy, but that means to me that some time in the past, Solas helped to found a major organization, presumably to help someone otherwise helpless. If one believes this, one could buy the idea that Solas helped the humans organize, presumably to deal with some sort of threat. (Was Elvhenan more aggressive than we were taught to believe? We already know they had serious problems.) Now, Solas has awakened, and found that the humans he helped became as bad as Elvhenan, if not worse. That would give him serious mistrust of organizations.

    • @girltriesgames
      @girltriesgames  9 лет назад +1

      Peter Hanes whoa that's an interesting thought. I have definitely considered his comments about organizations A LOT (because I over analyze everything Solas says lol), but I had always taken it to be in reference to the Elven gods.
      But, this is really, really interesting... I was just replaying DAO, and when you learn about the Arcane Warrior specialty, it implies that there was a time when humans and elves fought against a force together. It has been really bugging me for awhile, trying to fit it into a theory or even the timeline... you've given me a lot to think about!!! AWESOME :)

      girltriesgames Elves fought with Andraste against Tevinter. After Tevinter's defeat they were awarded the Dales, which the Orleasians then took away from them. Though I am not sure those elves were ancient enough to fit into the temple where you find out about Arcane warriors.

    • @girltriesgames
      @girltriesgames  9 лет назад +1

      yeah, I'm not sure about that, either. I was under the impression that Arcane Warriors pretty much died out with the fall of Arlathan (though I guess Knight Enchanters had to pull it from somewhere!).

      Peter Hanes
      Uhmm... no, because why would Solas use the Imperium if he already had the solution of locking up the Old Gods in the first place?
      Answer: Who else is out there in Thedas that could help the release of the Old Gods? Obviously the Tevinter themselves. So, it is by mere luck that Tevinter got powerful after ransacking the remains of Arlathan.
      I'd rather stick to the idea that Arlathan did sunk into the depths, yes Abelas was right that the Tevinter didn't defeated Arlathan simply because there is no need to defeat a city with few or no defenders AT ALL and if you are going to look at the bodies of water in Thedas it is still largely unexplored. So my take is that the Arlathan ruins maybe in between the Amaranthine Ocean and the Frozen Seas just east of the Brecilian Forest or deep in the SUNDERED Sea itself just west of the Arbor Wilds.
      Remember, anything that qualifies for Solas' disapproval is actually a weapon against him.

    • @bgcvetan
      @bgcvetan 7 лет назад +1

      Solas refered to the Evanuris the elven gods pantheon, who were extreamly powerful mage kings and queens.
      Experiments of the Evanuris created the blight, the qunari and many other horrors.

  • @afgusti4269
    @afgusti4269 7 лет назад +7

    I think Arlathan is in fact, The black city. Arlathan fell because of the war among the elves. But it ended u in the fade after Solas created the Veil. The tevinters saw Arlathan as a golden city, but when they entered they, somehow tainted it or maybe it was already black (maybe cause of the veil).
    Corypheus talks about "the power of the gods". What if their gods where the Evanuris. They worshi gods in form of Dragon and we have seen Flemeth as a Dragon. Maybe they though about the Evanuris as gods, without knowing they were elves. Maybe they saw them as dragons.
    Tressasser shown us a lot of things. Solas said: "You saw the remain of Vid Dirthara, it was intrinsically tied to the fade, and the veil destroyed it." I think it has to do with that.

  • @peterhanes7333
    @peterhanes7333 9 лет назад +4

    I also want to add two last theories:
    Theory One: The Elves are descended from Spirits.
    We know that in Chantry Lore, the Maker first makes the spirits, then creates Thedas. For some reason, some spirits cross over into Thedas before the Maker creates the Veil to cut them off from the world. Still, some must have stayed, and the number of spirits that crossed over must have been significant if the Maker felt the Veil was needed. If the elves are descended from spirits, this would explain a number of things:
    1. Their immortality- Of all the beings in Thedas, only two creatures are immortal: ancient elves and Spirits. If the former was descended from the latter, that would explain a lot.
    2. Their links to magic- We know that the ancient elves were a magical people. According to Solas, magic was as natural to them as breathing. Even the ancient Tevinters believed that elves had a special link to the Fade. What is more linked to the Fade than a spirit?
    3. Solas' friendship with Spirits- Let's admit, Solas being friends with spirits is highly unusual. It would explain a lot if he knew that elves and Spirits had common ancestry.
    Theory Two:
    Fen'Harel was an Elven War God.
    Why would the Elven Creators accept a "God of Rebellion" into their ranks? Let's face it, no smart society is going to allow rebellion to become part of their religion. Far more likely was that Fen'Harel was originally god of another position before he defected. The most likely position is war, as there is no Elven god of war, although Elgar'nan may have fulfilled that function. He may have defected because once he had helped Arlathan take over Thedas, he realized how evil his nation was. And we know that in the Dales, the Emerald Knights were accompanied into battle by specially trained Wolves, This could have been a carryover from when Fen'Harel was god of war, and would explain why he took the wolf as his symbol.
    PS: Good to see you back, girltriesgames! Always fun to hear your theories.

    • @girltriesgames
      @girltriesgames  9 лет назад

      Peter Hanes if you're on reddit, you should check out /r/thedaslore and post your theories!! I hear so many theories (because I am obsessed) but yours are really unique and they make a lot of sense!
      The video I'm almost done editing is going to totally contradict your first theory lol, but I definitely like it, and want to think on it a bit more, because I think there could be something to it!
      As for the second, I've definitely been wondering why Abelas calls Fen'Harel "The Dread Wolf." I assumed that was a nickname given to him by the Dalish who thought he did this terrible thing, but Abelas is ancient and still knows him by that name. I'm not sure what I think about him being a god of war, but I definitely think he was different than the other gods. The only other god so closely associated with an animal is Ghilan'nain, who was ascended to godhood. Was F'H also? After the video I'm about to release I'm planning on looking deeper into the gods. I hope you'll like it! :)

    Now with the trespasser dlc adding more information and explained that the elves often integrated the fade with thier buildings, it seems even more plausible that this could be true. Not only that, but blood magic is said to be able to rip holes inthe fade, maybe the Tevinter's sent it there.

  • @sagearmaggedon7307
    @sagearmaggedon7307 8 лет назад +2

    The black city could possibly be Arlathan. One important thing to note is that the fade serves as a prison, as mentioned by the Tevinter statue Elenai Zinovia, from the Dragon Age:Awakening DLC. The fade holds the Evanuris, as well as whatever the Black City is. Notice how the city is always equidistant from all other parts of the fade? As a matter of fact the Black City appears to be the only constant in the ever changing fade,the only known change to it being its color from golden to black. It is interesting to note that it seems that the Black City is only in the distance for dreamers. The only two instances of the fade being breached physically seems to put the unwelcome visitors very close to the city for some reason ( if the fade is truly a reflection of reality, that would mean that the real black city is somewhere in the western approach in the abyssal rift.). I doubt that anyone is able to just fly there, or manipulate the fades nature when they are in physical form. While a bridge could possibly be formed in dreams, those who dream can never actually get close to it. The closer they get, the farther the city seems to be. The fade is a prison for all intents and purposes, and only those who actually have power enough to breach the prison seem to be able to reach the city. The only two recorded breaches involved the death and blood of countless slaves and almost all of the lyrium in Tevinter. The second involved a powerful mark that was borne from the very key that created the veil.

    I... actually never thought of this this way. Interesting. This actually sounds great. So simple, yet so on point.
    What do you think is the relationship between the Blight (or just the Taint), the Forgotten Ones, the Black City and Arlathan? It's been a while since I was fresh with Dragon Age lore, but if when Fen'Harel created the Veil he 'sunk' Arlathan into the Fade and it became a prison for the elven tyrants... how would that become blackened, empty, lifeless? What is the Taint, even? The Black City has been sitting on my mind on and off for years. I know the Taint was probably just a way of making an interesting mindlessHorde, but the whole story with the BC, the tevinter magisters who went in, the terribly, god-shitting curse they brought back - this has been the most intriguing aspect of the lore to me for a long time.

    I believe that the black city is actually an ancient archive containing all history and magical knowledge. The makers library to put it simply. Certain races of thedas were allowed access to its bountiful knowledge. Elves had access to it through the makers permission but lost the privilege by offending the maker. The ancient elves were corrupted and owner seeking and tried to usurp the archive by conning human servant mages to break it open so that the power hungry elven mages could once again have access to the makers archive. This black city was booby trapped in case this should happen so the legends of being taint could be true. The difference is that the ancient elves do not perceive the maker as humans do. In fact they may see the maker as an equal probably this is why they fell. The seat of the maker was empty because he left the black city to go elsewhere not because of man but long ago because of the strife with the ancient elves.

  • @bindair_dundat
    @bindair_dundat 8 лет назад +1

    I think it is pretty obvious. Only one major city is known to be "missing" from Thedas, Arlathan. The Golden/Black City is in the Fade, a place where the Dread Wolf banished the elven pantheon, around the time of the Fall of Arlathan. I don't believe in coincidents. That would mean the writers suck at their job.

    Black City/Golden City=Arlatan?Very interesting theory.After seeing a Trespasser DLC story and the origin of the Veil,I am almost prepared to accept it as a fact.Don't forget how Solas is pissed in DAI at Grey Wardens and their meddling at things they according to him don't understand.1 of those things is their primary expertise - The Blight.If Solas greatly dislikes you and you either allied with the mages or disbanded Templar Order,he will if not immediately after,then some time after Adamant go into a bit more detail.But just a bit.Assuming you recruited Grey Wardens off course.If you submit mages or Allie with Templars he will talk on that instead to disapproves your actions though that can happen even before Adamant.Why does he claim that anything he could suggest on dealing with the Blight is better then anything Wardens might do?Is it connected with depending on your DAO choices,HoF/Alistar/Loghain surviving the battle with the Archdemon?If Arlatan is a Black City,did Coriphius and friends pick up Blight there?If so,it would explain Solas's rage towards Wardens.Still,unless he created the Blight as security measure of some sort(that spin out of control),I can't figure him out.

    I doubt it'd be remotely the same Fade as before the Veil rose. There has been a HUGE portion of time, wherein the nature of a Thought-To-Actuality realm like this DRASTICALLY changed; building new sprawling networks of inhospitable terrain teeming with equally inhospitable critters. In summary, with the Veil down, there's no guarantee that anything might be the same. Bloodier'n Hell, with the same clientele.

  • @jamesvandam2966

    I still hate this theory. It's all speculation. There is truly no evidence for it at all.
    I'm 99.99999999% sure that the Avvar are closest in their story about there being a great city at the top of Mount Belenas that was moved in the Fade.
    Mount Belenas apparently stood at where Lake Calanhad is now. Look at a map of Fereldan with this story in mind. Suddenly the giant crater in the middle of the map stands out like a sore thumb, doesn't it?
    There's also a parallel between Korth battling a dragon at this mountain in Avvar myth and Mythal battling Andruil at a mountain in elven myth in dragon form. The kicker? Both stories tell us that the fight lasted for three days and three nights. Too much to be a coincidence. Shoot, we even know why Mythal ambushed Andruil here--it most likely had to do with the Blight.
    Avvar myth also teaches that this mountain had a heart. Here's where things get a little tinfoily for me: if this mountain had a heart, it means that it was alive. Do we know of any living mountains in lore? No, but we do know about the Titans, and when Dagna completed her research into the Fade, she mentioned having a vision where she was "mountain-tall."
    Now for the scary part that more or less proves this theory and for some reason EVERYONE seems to overlook this simple fact.
    The Black City is not golden. I know, I know. That's obvious. But look at it. It's clearly not golden, and is clearly corrupted. When have we ever heard an account of the Blight infecting architecture? Bianca (not the crossbow) even tells us that the Blight only effects living things.
    But that's just my theory, though. I kinda hope we never find out the truth because it's scarier and more lovecraftian that way. Bioware already hurt Mass Effect by explaining too much about the Reapers. I hope they don't do the same for Dragon Age, or that if they do do it, they do it right.

  • @auroraflash
    @auroraflash 8 лет назад +2

    Don't forget that the Black City once was the Golden City. I guess each Enavuris fused with a different kind of spirit/demon and Solas/Fen'harel fused with a pride demon. Thus he refers to himself as "a young elf who thought he knew everything". This is clearly an aspect of pride. Also pride can't accept the idea of gods standing above it. Pride does not bend its knee. Nothing represents pride better than a golden city. Some other god tainted it black in anger, trying to escape this prison. When the magisters went there directly, they brought the blight back to the physical world and the god sought power.

    • @kiwitowel
      @kiwitowel 8 лет назад +2

      The part about the Black City being once golden is purely the Chantry's telling of it. Corypheus is one of the very magisters the chantry speaks of and even he says it was already black when he got there. No one but the chantry says that the city was once Golden. Also, regarding your theory about Solas, it's made pretty clear throughout the game and especially in Trespasser that he regrets his actions. He looks back at his past self with some small amount of disdain, hence the "young elf who thought he knew everything" bit. I also seriously doubt that a pride demon would help the Inquisitor with their goals like Solas does throughout Inquisition.

    Anyway, what if: Solas saw the elven "gods" as slave masters (valaslin) and decided to remake the world by locking away the most powerful of the elevhan in the fade, freeing the rest. Unfortunately, all this did was weaken the people left behind making the ripe for conquest by Tevinter.

    So there's a codex that you can clean meaning from if you drink from the well that's relevant to this: dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Codex_entry:_Untranslatable_Elven_Writing
    "We are trapped. The ones born here do not understand the keenness of what we have lost, or why so many of their elders weep as they enter uthenera."
    The rest seems to be referring to Abelas, but that part is interesting. Couple that with Morrigan claiming some of the eluvians lead to other "in between" places and I have to wonder if elves did at one time exist on a higher plane in some way.
    Though I have said in the past if this series goes ElfQuest on me and the elves turn out to be aliens I am so done. Lol.

  • @PauKj

    I have been theorizing that maybe the elven pantheon became blighted or is the origin of the blight somehow, and that Fen'Harel had to seal arlathan and the gods away in the fade and create the veil to save/spare the rest of thedas. Maybe it's just a disease or maybe it's a weapon. Maybe the madness of andruil (and maybe falon'din, if not it was only power-hunger) is connected with it. It says that andruil went mad after hunting the forgotten ones (i think) so maybe that's where it came from, and maybe mythal absorbed it to save andruil from the blight.

    I doubt its arlathan. However. From what i understand, from codexes, logical reasoning. There was a golden city at one point. Cory, before his death talked about the halls of the golden city. One other codex mentioned that some original magistered talked about it golden turning black. but that they barely could know what they were talking about. Also dreamers existed a loooong way back. and the creation of the chantry has nothing to do with the actual belief of the golden city. Andraste talked about it and it wasnt disproved. Dreamers, codexes from them or even the magisters could have seen the deceit from the fade. And arlathan existed in these days. We also realise that everything that the elves believed about the gods are mostly false. Fen Harel isnt like what we think he is like. he is far more benevolent, but there is an ultimate goal, which is unknown.

    • @girltriesgames
      @girltriesgames  9 лет назад +1

      warallied The awesome/frustrating thing about the codexes in the game are that they are written by characters in the game with limited knowledge, meaning that they can be biased and/or mistaken, and not necessarily factual (just as the elves are about their gods). I thought Andraste came AFTER the city was already black. In the World of Thedas book, it says the magisters entered the Golden City in -395 Ancient (thus turning it black, supposedly), and Andraste was born almost 200 years later. So, I don't think she saw the Golden City, she was just told about it by the Maker (again, *supposedly*). Perhaps it was golden when it was Arlathan?
      What's your opinion on what the Black City is? Do you think it was the real seat of the Maker?

    • @warallied
      @warallied 9 лет назад

      well some codexes are meant to be like: here is history. and some others, are like witness account to bring confusion and doubts. to bring some facts into the myths. The golden city existed on a logical basis that it was never disproved or thought impossible. it could have been seen by dreamers of old and the magisters. It is also said that the veil wasnt always so--thats its an artificial construct. and the fade as the real world was one. i believe the city we see in the fade was part of this world. with cory's powers, from the origin's expansion, we can tell that its definitely from these days. Inquisition (and also david gaider tweets) showed us that the elves has absolutely no clue what happened to the gods or what they truly are. things are a lot more hectic and its actually possible to ascend godhood (as morrigan said: these were probably not gods to begin with) We also know that the taint isnt a fade, or godly curse or wtv. It existed prior the first blight in a dwarven city that wasnt modern dwarven in culture and architecture. The blight has power and a purpose. With all that being said: it looks to me that the old gods, elven gods were not gods at first. The blight was a tool as the sphere was. Where all these came from, why, and the point of godhood and who was the progenitor is an other story. As for the Maker. There is the chantry ideal of what he is, and the concept of what he is. Anyone could be considered the Maker (dumat, elven pantheon, fenhenral tricks etc..) And the proper belief of what he is and what he stands for. To be honnest. This black city isnt, wasnt the seat of the maker. But i do believe in Andraste and what she said. Was THE maker the progenitor? i dunno. but it sure is possible to become a God, so that theory is very possible. I will need to read all codexes about what andraste said about everything. since its chantry reading, its very possible to be all poop. The golden city could exist in an alternate dimension and the black city could have been its counter part as solas was saying that the fade imitates its real world location. probably not that, but food for thought.

      also. lets not forget. the mages entering the golden city. being deceived, the old gods, all happened before the chantry and andraste's teachings. So it is fair to say that there was tons of ways for them to believe that. I think the city was golden, and everyone believed it.

      Corypheus was one of those mages who entered the "golden" city under the *impression* that it was golden, but entered and found it black. You can see it at 4:35 . As you said earlier, the elves were mistaken about their religion, maybe the Chantry is as well? It has been a looong time and a lot of info could have been mixed up, misunderstood, or flat out changed tor the benefit of the church. We have seen that happen in real life A LOT, and also in DA!
      I'm not saying I'm right, because this is totally just a theory, but I don't think we can take the codexes as proof of anything at this point, after having so much of them disproven! :)

      @girltriesgames  9 лет назад

      warallied I should clarify, that I definitely think there is SOME truth to the codexes, they wouldn't flat out try to lie to us, but I think that often they're misconstrued versions of events, written by in game characters with limited perspectives.
      What is your theory about what happened to the Golden City? I haven't heard too many others!!

    I wonder if the blight destroyed the city and all in it after it was shut away in the fade... It makes me think that the purpose was simply isolation to prevent the spread of an infection, and the magisters that breached it also let the blight out again, just like the myths say.

    The fade I mean

    My theory starts with a simple comparison --> The Forgotten Ones (part of the elven phanteon) = The Old Gods
    Now for the in depth theory that is quitte related with everything i've read and tought about it:
    The Ancient elves were indeed the first to worship the Elven Pantheon but as the story revealed itself the humans also started to worship a part of the other "Bad" Elven Pantheon named "The Forgotten Ones" (And so they learned "Blood Magic")
    The War that started between the magister's of the tevinter imperium and the ancient elves was indeed a huge in depth war as champions from both sides of the Ancient Elven pantheon, on one side the Mages of the Tevinter Imperium as the chosen one's from the Old Gods (The Forgotten Ones) and on the other side the ancient elves from the (The Rest of the Ancient Elven Pantheon) that ravaged into a endless war, bringing misery and doom to both sides. In the middle of all that pain and suffering one grew tired of the endless war, one that could walk amongs't both side's named Fen'Harel or simply Solas (In Inquisition), named later the "Trickster" for having betrayed both sides by trapping the forgotten one's in the "abyss" and the rest of the Elven Pantheon in heaven where they could no longer influence events in the mortal world. And so the fate of the world would be decided by mortals... or so it seemed.
    All changed when the mage's of the tevinter Imperium decided to reach the Golden City, influenced or not by the Old Gods as a larger plan which actually made sence later it doesn't matter because they would have to settle with mere curiosity to fill the hole's in their hearths, but as they reached the Golden City, they discovered that the city was already Black when they reached it as Corypheus (one of the first mage's to reach the "Black City") said. And so they were cast out of the Black City but became tainted because the Elven Pantheon did not recognize them as their children and banished them tough is not clear if the Elven Pantheon left that place or not. As they succumbed into disease, terror, spite and malevolence (The aspects of the Forgotten one's) they turned into the Old Gods, even tough all the magister's mage's received a gift when they entered the Black City. And so as the lesser darkspawn were born they wen't to the "abyss" or in other words... they wen't underground hearing the call in order to release the Archdemons (The Old Gods).
    Besides Corypheus, i strongly believe the other tevinter mage that entered the black city was non other than The Architect, because he realized like the others that entered the city much like Corypheus that they were mere peons in the mist of all this involvement that has happened and so he wished to release his brethren from their suffering by killing the remaining old gods that were slumbering deep underground. I believe he was killed and revived like Corypheus but losing his memories, not knowing how he came to be. Its a interesting theory based on facts, let me know what u think :)
    I really hope the darkspawn with the architech guidance allow's the darkspawn to show a "diferent" side of what they trully are, sentient beings they are and will be in the possible future. :)
    Cheers! extensive reading but promising! :P

      Andre Martins Interesting! I have heard similar theories before and I think it's definitely possible!
      Also, you're right about the Architect! I know you posted this awhile back (sorry I've been finishing up school), but the new World of Thedas pretty much confirms what we have all been speculating! Did you read the "different darkspawn" codex?

    • @Devs3921
      @Devs3921 9 лет назад

      Yeah u are right, in fact everything we can do is speculate and give wings to our imagination!
      Yes i read it in the past when i played origins (i had to read it again because i forgot) and im disappointed at the fact they didn't add in more in depth intel to the Architect that "being" would definitely give the long inspiration we all have been wondering about the fate of the darkspawn, and not just some wild beasts looking for prey or destruction. In one simple expansion the architect showed that some darkspawn have a sence of loyalty without being controlled or some others with feelings being it bad or good feelings (that is just some examples in a huge plot that happened in a small expansion). That character is very well created and placed and is a genious, and deserves more impact on the story than just a expansion or some references in DA2.
      I will have to the say the same, for i have been busy lately and for that we are even. No need to apoligize :)

      Yes, I really wish we could ask the Architect more questions! I'm in the middle of re-reading The Calling, and there's some interesting insight about him in there, also!

    This is sort of cliffhanger is exciting. I am very much interested when we will see the future events unfold and learn more about the history of the elven. Also an interesting fact is that somehow grey wardens are tied to this too( They were mentioned at the end of the game ).
    And btw, you have a great voice, it is a pleasure to listen to you. You also make your content very intruiging and interesting. I do hope you keep it up.

      I hope I don't impose, but what is your opinion on the future of this game. Do you think that in the future we may see an expansion or a dlc explaining what the dread wolf is up to?
      Or maybe a new dragon age game? And what do you think will become of Thedas. I would love to hear from you since you know so much more about the games and the lore itself, than I do.
      Eagerly expecting your response =P

      Thank you!! :) :) I am sure they will release a new game and I'm pretty sure Fen'Harel will play a big role in it. The whole ending epilogue seemed like a set up for the next game, possibly painting him as some kind of grey antagonist? I'm not sure, but I think there's going to be some chaos in Thedas! I think we'll probalby see the last Blight (which I think will be a double Blight, possibly triggered by Fen'Harel?? I don't know! Just another wild tinfoil theory lol) But I am crossing my fingers that we will get some more answers or at least a few more hints in DLC sooner than that!! I can't wait! :)

    Solas is lying. The Black City was always black and he knew. Thedas default state is blighted. The chant is also lying. The Thedas is opposite, not the fade. The Maker is the 1st Darkspawn
