Well I haven’t watched the video yet. But I love these videos and I think it will get fixed. I really want you to get and do more Toyota’s! Maybe a 1st gen 4Runner
That is a legit weld. Casted aluminum is way harder to weld then just about any other grade of aluminum. Best part is you did not have to take the head back off! Just a pause in work and now you can finish it.
I've known people like Blane in many different fields of employment... people who completely understand their work and do it better than most others-- from mounting tires to rebuilding automatic transmissions to teaching others how to do things. These folks are worth whatever they charge, and they usually are very reasonable compared to the mainstream. Hey, you get what you pay for... if you're lucky!
If you jump to MIG...it's not that hard. Now if you start with Arc welding (MMA), now that's more tough to learn to have a steady hand. TIG is in another level.
@@RogerM88 Anyone serious about learning to weld should start with tig, tig is the best way to learn the basics (IMHO). Mig has more in common with running a hot glue gun than anything :-)
@@morganmcintire2853 it depends for what you want. If you want to weld on a budget...I'd advice a modern Inverter Arc welder...if you want more elaborate welds, a MIG Gas welder. And if you want a professional weld with clean look, go with TIG.
@@RogerM88 for the most part true, I guess, if your time is free and you are working in the field with cheap scrap iron or dirty material, a AC/DC arcwelder is great. Aluminum, stainless, chromolly, titanium might as well go straight to tig. I stand by my statement, Tig welding is the best way to learn and you can get a decent one for less than 2k. As a aluminium welder your man did all the correct procedures to do the job It's got to be super super clean. I get people all the time bringing me parts covered in oil and dirt and they wounder why your charging so much 🤔 Great video Glen 🇬🇧👍
Now that is a legit welding job, so confident and executed to perfection. The V12 will live again without worries, at least from this casting bubble problem.
I've done this sort of repair MANY times. People too often assume the worst. A quality welder...and someone who knows how to weld...two of the best things you can have.
After seeing how much stress this was causing you, Alex, and justifiably so, I'm elated to see you found Blane and he was able to fix it! He obviously knows his craft very well and that repair looks amazing!! Very excited this worked and you didn't have to pull the engine entirely apart, ship the head for repair and rebuild it. Looking forward to see the rest of this video series. GREAT job!!
I have watched a lot of your videos and have seen you encounter a few problems but that pinhole is the only one that really rattled you. Your relief at the end of this video was clear to see. Also Blane seems to be a really nice gentleman.
I absolutely homolove guys like this. You can just tell he explains EVERYTHING as clearly and thoroughly as possible, and isn’t one of those jackboots who gets pissed when you ask him questions. If I was gonna pick someone to teach me welding, it would definitely be this stretch Armstrong fella. Your engine thanks you for getting a board certified boca raton plastic surgeon to apply that band aid on that port for you.
you and a very limited number of youtube mechanics are on my viewing list... (south main auto, pine hollow) simply because you take the time and effort to show the why and how of your repairs.... because really, at the end of day, i'm here to learn something...not just look at a before and after boring video... like you I repair my cars and i'm happy for you that you can now do this for a living !... great videos as always and keep doing what you're doing.... i can't wait for the next one... cheers !
A great outcome, the problem was exactly what I thought but always best to be on the safe side and repair the head with weld, you have thousands of people out there rooting for you Alex, maybe all those prayers being said on your behalf made a difference!
Alex, I posted on your last V12 issue about this repair. I am a welding engineer and wanted to give you my 2 cents. I work with expert welders like Blain every single day on multimillion dollar projects. Most of them are not well versed and not very well articulated. Everything that you decided to do and everything that Blain said in this video was 100% correct. I especially like how Blain stressed the importance of grinding out the defect, and ensuring it was all cleaned with a solvent before welding. The cleaning of the rod and the discussion about oxidization was also very key. Although I don’t know what filler metal or shielding gas Blain used, put your mind at ease knowing that everything that Blain did was correct. His repair will last a long while. Also, congrats on being able to find a “bottom” on that casting pore! That really was the determining factor which made this repair much easier.
One of the perks of living in a large city is that you have access to just about anything that you need. Master welder at your service. You were very fortunate to find him.
So happy to see that nasty problem resolved. Looks like an excellent repair job, well done all involved. I see you are taking good care of my future E55, thank you.
Way to go Blane👍 Alex, it was nice to see your little buddy out in the garage with you. Who knows, maybe someday he will start working on a project with you😊 (a little father/son project)
Yes, I haven’t thought about it but it makes lots of sense, that’s why some casting processes are different, some of them require like a shake when is being pour to avoid that kind of imperfectionsz
Very cool video and the end result is fantastic. This weld will only be subject to slow heat cycles and vibrations, so it should last longer than the car. Very nice to see Blaine working on that, he sure knows his thing.
I feel like watching all these different welding videos really helps me out even though I just have a shitty wire feed mig welder from harbor freight. It's good enough for patch jobs but nothing pretty.
@@darkiee69 You betcha! as long as I get good penetration and a solid weld, I don't care if I have to grind it down some after. Managed to weld up my exhaust system, fix a cracked header, and weld up my own radiator brackets.

Great job. My late father-in-law could weld like that as well. He had credentials in a book which was about 4" thick, from Hobart. TIG welding is very tricky stuff... I saw him do it and it's an art. Blane is damn good.
Great to see it resolved, amazing to see how a professional welder makes it such a stress free process, probably made it seem like nothing after all the worrying and researching you must have done before finding him!
Soo Glad he treated the aluminium dust with the respect it deserves...people think Ali...Soft...tho its what they make sandpaper with. Just seeing his prep tells you he's a pro.
Do you think this will work? I do.
Of course you're Alex in the end 💪💪
No doubt it will work

Glad to see you fixed it. I didn't think that hole went anywhere, but it's nice to have it resolved either way for peace of mind.
another OCD pal!😂
Hi Aaron!
You found the PERFECT welder to fix this. Well worth ever cent!
You’re good. He took all of the appropriate steps. Clean material and clean rod. Seeing real professionals execute their craft is a sight to behold.
That is a legit weld. Casted aluminum is way harder to weld then just about any other grade of aluminum. Best part is you did not have to take the head back off! Just a pause in work and now you can finish it.

"You can't even tell" - uttered by every aluminum TIG welder before the inspector breaks out the dye testing.

Whate a pleasure to watch master welder Blane doing his thing, made it look very simple
Pros always make it look so easy.
Wow, you found a really great welder! Loved how he explained everything.

I've enjoyed following the progress. ...

Great to see people who are confident in what they do. He walked the walk, and talked the talk. Proper job right there.
Just listening to him and seeing his demeanor, I knew he would do a great job. It looks fantastic. Super impressive.
Good Job Blaine!!!
This was a great watch, I felt your relief. There are welders and there are welders who have the belief to even start a job such as this.
This guy has the hands and mind of a cardiac surgeon. Also great on screen presence. Good video.

I'm so glad i have 8 more videos in that playlist!
Alex man Blains got the magic wand,he waved it once and its brand new, like nothing ever happened,AWESOME repair job, cant wait to see it running
Wow, this guy would make a great instructor one day. Very concise.
Awesome guy, always super cool to see professionals work!! So cool and relaxed but just pure A+ quality!
Thanks for your video as your son is back and he is learning so much.
