- Professors can be amazing and life changing but they can also be difficult or terrible teachers. I'll bet you anything you want that you will have at least one of these latter professors at some point in your time at university or college.
Some students think a course with a bad or the worst professor, basically means to give up. Forget about learning or doing well in that course, just consider it a foregone conclusion. I disagree. I think having one of these professors is precisely the type of adversity that every student SHOULD encounter, to develop strategies and resilience to continuing with any goal they have (here being to learn).

The thing that blows my mind is how universities let some of these people teach. Who cares who kind of fancy Phd paper they wrote. It's absolutely useless if they can't convey their knowledge to others.
I've heard that most lecturers aren't even trained to teach.
They are just hired because they provide the university with adequate research.
@@crweewrc1388 You heard correctly. Professors aren't trained nor evaluated on their teaching skills. Some people are naturally good at teaching and some aren't. So what you end up with is a 50/50 chance of getting a good professor.

Like wtf am I doing here then? I'm just allowed to take everything the teacher cares to tell me and if I'm genuinely confused about why her narcissist ass won't tell me how to fix my mistakes and not just simply shout "you're wrong!" then I have to simply shut up. Also, she asks other classmates about their processes to do the assignment but she doesn't ask me and when I start to elaborate she shuts me down saying that it doesn't matter because people out there won't care about that part of the work...am I seeing things here or she blatantly doesn't like me? Like, I couldn't care less about her, I'm there to learn but I just want other opinions so I know I'm not exaggerating...

If it is community college, even if you graduate, you may still need to continue for your next goal of transferring to a university. There are some students who graduate and get a transfer credit in that same semester. When you graduate, you are done with that particular teacher but I know you can find a better teacher. Now if you graduate at a university, wow, maybe a better chance to upgrade your resume for a better job. If you can get a decent job, then you can defeat the purpose of continuing your college education. There are some that gets a decent job using just only the associates degree.
That's a common excuse students use. You're one of dozen if not a hundred he teaches, he doesn't have any positive or negative feelings against you unless you provoked them more than once. I'm speaking as a teacher, here.

This video has not helpful. It's patronizing, as if I didn't know I have to try hard. The truth is, in some situations if you try to fix an unfixable problem, you only stress more, waste more time, and feel even more disappointed at the end. I've been in classes where the more I study the worst I do, the textbooks contradicts the professor, or different people give you different answers. In some programs you can't change professors. Sometimes the best you can do is understand that the system is wrong, and do what you can without letting that get to your head. Understand that the grade given is not reflective of your intelligence because the system makes no sense, and be okey with not having A's bc some professors will not let you have them.

- you believe that studying and revising is about grabbing a book, reading everything, memorising what's there to memorise and doing exercise until night falls, and you sleep then repeat.
If that's you, you're doing what I call brute forcing learning. Your brain doesn't work like that, none' does. Instead, try to find what type of learner you are. I discovered I was an auditory learner so I used audios to help, but you may require visual learning, or kinesthetic learning.
Another thing is to make studying part of your day, not a long activity, so spend as much as your brain can stay focused studying (for me it's around two hours) then spend ¼ of it doing something you like, like watching videos, laughing or anything positive, then go back to learning if you feel recovered enough, if not try to give yourself longer breaks within limits.
Another tip is to find or make a study group (be selective, don't just go for your friends, go for studious people you know) a month or more before exams. Meet in a comfortable setting (I did it online) everyday and spend two hours or three learning. The idea is that, let's say you are four with 12 materials to cover, each will get four materials to really focus on, then explain when you meet, then they get to idle around for three days while others do the lifting, then it's their turn again and so on. This minimises work and boosts productivity. Even if one of you misunderstood or missed a part, the others can set them on the right track thus helping them see their blunders.
Of course, this is all under the assumption that you actually like your majour, and the professors are the only problem but if not I may not be of help

Unprofessional and rude professors need to go under training to teach complex subjects into simple straightforward analogies that the students can digest. Their responsibility is to teach, respond to questions with respect, and have organization on the material they are teaching. They need to respect office hours and make them available for their students. Students pay a lot of money to obtain their education we are the customers they are the employees. The students are not guilty of the neglected job that the non-professional or rude professors have. I went through these and is not fun. I spoke with my professor and it did not work so I took it to the chair and then to the dean. We the students take responsibility to take notes, reading the syllabus, making sure we submit assignments, going to lectures, and paying attention and asking questions. Students are not asking for favors is the professor's responsibility to know what he or she signs up for and it is not okay to lack respect for the student's time, money, future, and education. If they do not like their jobs and they put their frustrations on the students is NOT RIGHT and it has to be SOLVE. Yes, that is why they have the chair and the dean to help to better the situation maybe the professors need help with something personal or need to take things off of their plates because if they are not performing well they are risking their education, GPA and making students repeat classes because the lack organization in class in their canvas in their assignments in the sources that we need to have on time to be able to perform. Yes, we need to take CONTROL OF OUR LEARNING, EDUCATION, and FUTURE. We need to speak up and never let anyone be rude, condescending, or patronizing, even if authority is not okay. Do not neutralize bad treatment from authority especially if they are getting paid and it is their job to REPORT THEM to their superiors to make sure the next generation gets a professional teacher who has a passion to teach, organize canvases, and assignments, answer questions, respecting office hours, clear and neat on his or her teaching, and sets students for success not for failure. If someone is going through these find sources, speak to friends, family, advisors, and therapists, and write a journal about the irregularities, and incidents with such a professor you need to collect emails, times, and dates, that support your case. Ask for your rights and the tools you need to succeed in class. First, speak with the professor's polity and make a list of your points then allow to see if the professor is delivering if not go to the chairperson if they do not listen go to the dean till it is solved or change universities or major. It is always useful to speak up and take action to solve situations.
I had two programming professors and they were the only one teaching these courses and let me tell you if they are the only one teaching it then get over it. You can’t change professor if they are the only one that teaches it and start doing your assignments early don’t wait on the last minute, trust it hurts really bad

I am a college professor and I had an idea for an assignment, so I navigated to this video. it is interesting to me because while I am just solid (I won one teaching award in my career, where as others have many) - some are just awful. I have had students tell me they stayed outside my lecture to listen to what I teach so they understand it better the way its being taught to them. And that is a terrible situation....because what can I do about it? The professor doesnt answer to me - they answer to the Chair. If the Chair gets enough notes the person is awful maybe they will do something about it (but likely wont). Get out of the course early if you can! Its my only solution to you.
I don't think you need answers from other professors if you are the professor yourself. The only thing you need to do is just be a decent professor. Just don't make any assignments too hard on students. That way you won't be a worst professor to deal with. You don't want to end up seeking advice from other professors because they may end up teaching you how to become a worst professor. Just take advantage that you get to be in charge. If you are in charge, you also have a power to make the environment decent. If you come to this video, you were meant to compare notes and see how you can become a better professor then all the other professors. Not every professor needs to be a mean professor. If you are a friendly professor who is willing to support students, then you will have students that will like you and would be willing to take you again. How about just be a type of professor who makes the class less stressful and then you will become a cool professor to have.

I have a teacher who can't teach and every time i ask question she ignored me . i try to learn from youtube its a math class .
that kind of teacher needs training from the best good teachers! They are the ones who need help to stop setting students up for failure is like parenting if the parents are not good to their kids the kids grow up with so much trouble in life. @@RIOSALEXANDRA Any strict professors who hears this will only respond by saying you are taking this class for credit which means we have to do our jobs, it is the student's job to work towards a good grade and it is not a non-credit class etc. Yes. We live in a world where not every college credit professor will be fair. So apparently, when a student is there for credit, these type of professors have a power to be strict on making it hard to pass the class. Now if it is non-credit classes, a professor will not be in position to go hard on students because non-credit students would not be competing for grades, no ranks, no educational achievements etc. If a non-credit teachers go hard, then there will be low enrollment and with low enrollment, class can cancel. These type of strict college professors who teaches classes for credit can apparently afford to go strict because they know the students will have no other place to go and need the credit for their educational goals. A teacher who teaches non-credit classes knows that if they go harsh on students, non-credit students can drop with no penalty added. So apparently, in a credit classes, a student will be force to earn the teacher's respect. If it is non-credit, a teacher will be force to earn the student's respect. A non credit teacher will be forced to be patient when teaching the students.
See here is my question. What do you do when your professor is the director of that department and is failing you intentionally. He started doing this after I gave him a bad review on the book he wrote. His book was completely inaccurate and abhorrent to read.
In the usual college/university organizational structure, even the director of departments, have someone that they report to, or oversees their activities/conduct. By failing you intentionally, I assume in the context of specific assignments or examinations, this professor is grading you unfairly/incorrectly. I would communicate these issues to the professor directly (not accusing them of being intentional even if you think it is). If they refuse to fix the grading, then I would raise the issue with whoever oversees duties in the college.
I was in a similar position as yours except that when I was asked to make a review, I was too afraid to even write a negative review. I wanted to wait til I finish the class first before giving bad reviews. At the time it was a final exam, every student was ask to review the class as part of an assessment. I was scared of that professor and sense that professor can give me a bad grade if I say anything negative. When asked to do review during finals, I would bet they wanted to set a trap so that way if the student say anything negative, the professor can use that bad grade against you. This might be a way to secretly test you. No matter how mean that professor is, I did not have a guts to write a bad review as the assessment because it is not in my own time. If writing a bad review at the school's time, it could be a trap and they might know you gave bad reviews. I would take it I got C- for keeping negative thoughts to myself on the reviews.

@@terminator96 Even in America where I go to university, complaining about professors to any authorities will make things worst because chances are, they will side with the professor's statement. I don't think it matters if it takes place in India or anywhere else. We can't expect to complain to authorities and then expect professors to magically go easy on students. If that professor is going to be hard with the grading and is going to yell at the student for not understanding, then we all have to work our butts off.

It sounds harsh but I see where he is coming from. I definitely have empathy for anyone who has had a bad Professor and most of the class failing the course. Who am I to judge. You really just need to work harder than anyone else and get extra resources to do well. I remember I had a terrible Professor and I just worked extra hard and even reported him for being very rude. I got an A in the course.
I have 2-3 professor to be rude to me and say get kicked of my classes and I just don’t know what to do anymore and so you have any advice for me.
I am at some short of "community college" outside of the US.
We cannot choose classes, we cannot choose teacher nor deliberately pick another subject and graduate. It's very stagnant. This year I have 2 teachers that seeeeriously get on my nerves. I cannot focus on class. When I participate, they pick on me publicly. It's seriously so difficult to deal with them and be active part of the class. I don't have problem with the subjects as far as studying goes but going to those classes is a nightmare.
I don't find it funny, I don't find it cool to complain. I am SERIOUSLY struggling to get a grip on these teachers.

What kind of country forces you to learn the subject that isn't even required for your job. I mean you go to college that is not in US and you cannot even pick a subject on what you want to learn. Is that college choosing a major for you? Because that system sounds like is messed up because you will only be learning something that isn't part of your job training. It is like saying that country you come from, you don't get to choose who you want to be for your job. It is like the school wanted you to learn a job skill that you are not good at.
Wait...that's not normal? Shit, I had to learn about the weirdest Freud ideas and British cuisine to study cultural studies...BRITISH CUISINE! I HAD A TOAST WITH BEANS IN MY BOOK!
I literally have a biology professor that gives us studies guides and then gives us the exams that have literally fuck all to do with the study guides they give us. The average ended up being a 58 with the highest being an 82 and lowest being a 17. Literally one example I can think of is how EVERYWHERE in the study guide, they mention how the replication fork looked in full detail and on the exam they didn’t mention ANYTHING about the fork and told us to label the replication bubble which was NOWHERE on the study guide.
That's nothing, I had a linguistics professor who showed up first class, asked students something about the material, got no answer and decided he's mad for THE REST OF THE SEMESTER and taught us not one more class. By the end he sent us, a week before exams, a bunch of pdfs and dipped. I still managed to pass the class.

That's why you want to take your fate into your own hands and undo the mistakes of your professor, since literally nothing else will work.
The day I stopped struggling in college is the day in which I used classes as a reference to know the units titles, methods chosen and other things and made the main focus self-tutoting. You see, there are two types of Indians online: ones named Khan trying to scam your grandma and get inappropriate pics from your sister, and guys named Ahmed who'll make the hardest subjects you've ever seen piss easy. Find those, add articles from the Internet, and made a group online (in person will be uncomfortable and distractive) and do 2/3 hours study every day at the same time in which one undertakes the task of fully comprehending one or few subjects, and them alone, then explain it to others. Of course, others will be familiar with them, too, so they'll point out anything he misunderstood or missed thus giving him benefits as well, next day the other student's turn. This means that you'll focus on ¼ of your overall materials if you had 3 other studious people, and will only brush on others, fully expecting others to pick up your slack the way you pick up theirs. Do that for a month, and just like me, you'll be able to barely pass through college, which is the highest you can dream of realistically
I don't negotiate the way I do homework and respond in a test. So my way to deal with the problem is to double or triple the amount of hours I memorize the textbook. I still get C's but at least not Ds
Homwork supposed to be easy mark for students so try to take advantage of it, to be honest I try to learn the subject like how I want to learn it but also no skip for unimportant part which is hard for me but profs like to bring the most unrelated things so when u fail u feel like it’s ur problem (u can just study the unnecessary for that)
And learn the lecture or at least read it before the class so u can get take advantage of ur prof view:..

sometimes homework is easy but professors make it harder by not being clear in the instructions and do not know how to teach is like they need to go back to school to learn to teach.
@@nano7055 We live in the world where this rules don't apply in every class. You can have 1 professor who is a hard grader then the other professor. To use essay writing as an example, you might have followed all the instructions to complete the prompt but it does not mean your professor will see it as good enough to get an A. If all professors were like that, there would already be higher numbers of people graduating or going into a prestitious school. What if your professor wanted 10 page essay and you gave that professor a 10 page essay? Your professor also needs to check the content too and your professor needs to decide is it worthy enough for an A. If you aren't getting an A, I would just say you just happened to have a tough grading professor. If you had other professors, you would already get an A on the essay.

Just had a terrible class because the teacher I had wasn’t in today. Made me to not take her lectures for granted again. This lecturer didn’t lecture at all. I had to leave early because it felt like a waste of time.
Or you have a professor who thinks online classes are beneath them and gives scant material with overly complicated questions. Of course, they wait till you cant withdraw before deploying this tactic. Then your stuck so you study, get tutoring and ect. Even when all studying has been done and your ready, you cant expect to throwing it back on the students. This is just another video telling you "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" and "its all your fault" there isnt any middle ground unless take it up with the college which goes the same way.
It's not saying it's your fault. It's acknowledging the situation you're in, but facing you against reality. It's unfair, but your only options are complain and fail or do all the work and succeed. It sucks but that's the harsh reality

It's a shame this video wasn't around back when this happened to me. Although truth be told maybe it wouldn't have made a difference, as I did what the video suggests. Right at the start of the year I saw all the red flags on my first meeting with the guy. It was a film degree and I was writing and directing my final project, with the money I had saved up from working during the course (I did this specifically so I could have more creative leverage on the film). But the teacher was so needlessly rude and manipulative from the start, there were clearly some issues he was taking out on me. I got scared and asked to get another "tutor" after the first meeting, I could barely get through 30 minutes, let alone an entire year. But my appeal wasn't accepted.
What I feared most happened, he used constant negative reinforcement to wear me down and force his ideas into the film, playing on my insecurities, by the end I had given up entirely on the film, I was so confused as to why he thought those ideas would work, I thought maybe I'm the one who's just really incompetent.
Long story short, he pushed me out of my own film, filming those terrible ideas was humiliating for me, being on that set was the most unconfortable experience I've been through. I isolated myself in that year from the embarassment. I hated the film and what I was going through, I had been waiting for that chance to make a short film since I was 12. By the time the year ended and I graduated I was so depressed with no prospects for my future, that I got suicidal, I returned to my country (I went to England to study film) to my mother's house. In the following years I would go back to England temporarily to participate in clinical trials. I didn't care anymore. One of the trials went wrong and caused me to have visual snow syndrome, which is a chronic condition with several symptoms, but to me the worst is being hypersensitive to light, now I have to wear sunglasses everywhere I go.
At the time I didnt care, but I started seeing a psychologist and psychiatrist to see if I could get over this, Im doing a bit better now but of course the syndrome remains.
That last year of university was over 3 years ago now. A year after graduating I emailed that teacher to be completely honest about what I was going through, but that was before I started doing trials, so he never found out about that. Anyway, some months after that email he stopped teaching. I don't if he quit, was fired or just retired, but I like to think my email got through to him.
Anyway, just needed to vent to those who happen to read this. Unfortunately this video didnt exist back then, it might've helped me gain some perspective on how to deal with the situation better.

Funny I remember all my grade school and high school teachers but none of my collge professors!!!!!
So I have a pathway course that has different lecturers than my typical course. He gave us all 40s for our last essay. I typically get within the high 60s or mid 70s. His marking was objectively wrong, saying I referenced incorrectly when its never been a problem for me before. I even had it checked with the writing resource centre. I won't drag on, but there was so much BS in his markings.
As a class we think its because of a talk he gave us one day. He claimed a majority of us had used AI to cheat in our essays. I know I sure as hell didn't. As I was sitting there, I was thinking in my head there are definitely going to be people that get accused when they didn't, and I was correct. I had no comments about it in my essay unlike some of my peers who said they had comments saying their writing was "robotic like".
I will be pestering them via emails and in person until this is resolved. It is disgraceful and disgusting that an institution costing us thousands and putting us in debt is sabotaging our future this way.
I also want to add, I know this wasn't my best essay or a masterpiece by any means, but I definitely demonstrated I knew what I was talking about. At the MININUM, it should be in the mid to high 50s. I would say from a 57 to a 60. A mark in the 40s suggests you barely knew what you were talking about, but enough to pass.
Update, I disputed this and managed to get my mark raised to the next grade boundary. I definitely lost my cool a bit in my email to them, but if you're facing something similar, don't be afraid to dispute it. Form a case and ask for a meeting. That's all :)

As a teacher, there is no such thing as "too much help". I encourage my students to ask me about the material or any curiosity they have involving what I teach in class, after the lesson, outside, online or anywhere they can catch me. That sorry excuse of a professor simply doesn't want to bother working

That is actually a good point with academic writing. Spending a few seconds of your presentation explaining who you are and why your reader should care about your opinion is a good point. To turn drstevej2527's comment into a proper critique... Explain who you are and how you are connected to the subject, for example, "My name is Michael, and I am currently a college freshman." This establishes my credentials or rather the experience and knowledge I have on the subject being discussed.

I’m a Dr of Political Science with almost 30 years of experience in the field. Secondly legitimate research comes from credible sources. We don’t just publish the random rants of people who have no credentials in the field. Scholarly journals or in your case the text books you are assigned are written by people with extensive credentials in the field. There is a great deal of scholarship on this subject especially since the advent of social media. I suggest reading The Death of Expertise: The Campaign Against Established Knowledge and Why it Matters is a work 2017 by Tom Nichols.
Millions of young people think that social media is a substitute for legitimate research. It’s not.

Again what qualifies him to do this analysis? It’s not that it’s not a real topic. The question is what qualifies HIM to address the topic? Mind you his criticisms include students not being able to keep up, the professor not being entertaining enough or assigning too much material. At the very least he admits that much of this can be the fault of students. Lastly this is not the movies. This idea that universities are full of terrible professors who terrorize their students is a ridiculous movie trope.

Also, my point was not entirely about this video, i’m here talking about a different point that I personally have against apathetic professors like you. So you can take that line about me failing to refute a point no one made elsewhere.
But okay, So this is all about entitlement huh? You’re one of those who are so “by the book” that you think that scholastic works and people with academic accolades are the ones who hold authority when it comes to a topic related to this issue. An issue that the STUDENT experiences and not the professor. Imagine practicing a logical fallacy and being all ad verecundiam out here as a professor. You invalidate what he presented all because you think that he’s not qualified unlike you since that’s what you suggest. You don’t understand because you’re too apathetic and egotistical and have forgotten what it’s like to feel like as a student. To put it simply, he’s qualified to talk about it because he experienced this. Why do you have to overcomplicate things and look for academic materials to back up the claim? You can’t speak on it because you’re a professor who does not understand and that’s the disconnect between the prof and student. You’re too apathetic. Now as i relate your character with my point, it’s “educators” like you who are so far up their own bottoms that you all completely disregard the feelings and feedback of the students. All because you think you’re more than the student and what they feel. This just shows a lot about what you are as an “educator”. No one is asking a professor to be entertaining, lively, etc. The point i’m trying to make is that educators need to be more efficient at teaching. Then when a someone starts speaking up on here, you practice this logical fallacy and think that you’re more credible when it comes to this issue all because that this is on youtube and not in the books. Who are you though to determine what makes him credible to speak about this topic? Don’t act like a gatekeeper of credibility you’re no greater than students you’re still a flawed individual like everyone. So yeah, let me ask you a question, what holds more truth in this world? You do realize any medium in this world can be used to manipulate. You live a fleeting life in a matrix that consists of laws and social constructs that aren’t absolute.

Till now, I have realised that I am wasting time by attending the classes especially in Indian Colleges. Even they completely change the research concept that students proposal and make it easily irrevalent. I am disappointed that my good plans where changed onto creepy third class ideas

The dr who teaches us dehrades you for just breathing
At the end of the day college is a business. That's why trade schools are important. Don't get me wrong study is good, but when you have an effective teacher that is passionate about teaching, students will observe that as well. I wish I went to a trade school instead. When I was in college the teacher taught business law so well, I was able to remember a lot of the things he taught, with a little bit of studying.
If women didn’t get harassed and weren’t undervalued in the trades, that would be great.

Capitalism would bring about a better college school system from the socialist themed system in the US. More professors to teach the same content that care about the students.
