Hi Tom and Peter, this is very helpful, Thank you both. Can you please advise me where can I license or download intro/outros from? Which mic is best for video podcasting the rode procaster, podcaster usb or Shure mv7 dual usb/xlr mic? I am leaning towards the shure mic as it will help me get started being usb plug and play and I could upgrade to get an audio recorder down the track, what are your thoughts on this? In terms of software I want to keep it simple but also want to start off with the right gear is Riverside FM, or Anchor better? I am a photographer so I already own my own lights, dslr etc, so its really only audio and software I require to get started. I really appreciate your advice, Have a great weekend, :)
You guys HAVE to try CleanFeed! I’m a professional voice actor and studios use it to record my voice remotely and the quality is OFF THE ROOF. Usually I don’t even send my local recordings to them. It has no video, so if you want a video feed you can use another platform for that. But I think you guys only do audio. And the bitrate for the audio is, again, OFF THE ROOF. It really sounds like I’m in the studio’s booth. Of course you can route it into the rodecaster in a mix-minus setup and record like you do your solo show. No more editing!

The method is use is clean feed, use the Rodecaster as the audio device, have everyone record locally (guest(s) and cohosts) and on rodecaster with a clap sync. Then just match up their files with the claps. Therefore you have the direct cleanfeed conversation to match with the individual files and it still flows as naturally as a conversation would in person without you having to try to match based on the quiet portions of the individual files.

Did you try Squadcast? Looks like this is good when having guests who are not so tech-savvy. Sound is recorded locally and then send automatically to you without the guest has to anything.
Good tips. I have a video podcast interviewing others. I have tried the mix minus setting on the usb channel but I am still getting guest bleed into my local mic channel. I will give the solo approach a try.
Zencastr is a great service for this very thing. I podcast with my buddy in Texas and I'm in Scotland. It handles syncing too by having the recording start on both audio tracks at the same time. Or there is interview mode directly in ECamm now too.

Have u tried both setting an alarm on your phone? If they sync with time servers your clocks should be running more or less in sync. (taking into account the time difference). pick a loud clear sound and you should be good to go. Come to think about it, this could be a good plugin idea 💡
The Enthusiasm Project Let me see if something like that already exists, a plugin that starts recording at a pre-set time. If not, Maybe I can throw something together for garageband.
I didn't get to watch this in full, so I may have missed it, but have you tried Zencastr? It basically records the audio on both ends and sets them up for delivery directly after the chat.
I use Audacity to do my final edits, I'm on a Windows PC. With the Rodecaster Pro I have the caller join via cell phone (mix-minus) and record to the SD card. I have the caller record their audio at their location and send it to me. It's easy to sync in Audacity since the wave forms are the same from the cell phone feed and the audio they sent me. No clapping involved. Voices align with the video too, no delays.

You could also record in multitrack on the Rodecaster and then use that to sync his recording with yours. And since it's multitrack you can just replace Peter's track with the recording he sends your way.
Cool.. will consider this approach... been using zencastr currently because it uploads locally recorded audio to the cloud directly. But that still experiences some compression... drives me nuts sometimes... wish every guest or co-host had good equipment. 😅
This is a great setup for a co-host. What about guests? How do you keep great quality when this unpredictable element comes into ply? Do you have a podcast on integration? I know you can plug the iPhone into the Rode.
I don’t have a video on integration, but if you have the Rodecaster, it has a built in call feature. Anchor also has a talk with friends feature, and there are other services like Zencastr that make it a little easier to bring in a guest. Of course you could always do the same method in this video with more than two people too.

Ok I’ve watched it. Excellent info thanks buddy. I just have 1 more question... what if the other podcasters you do the podcast with arent like Peter and are relative newbies? That would mean they won’t have a mic (not a pro one anyway). What would you suggest? Record through their headphones (if they’re apple they’d have a mic right?). The other 2 guys I’m starting with won’t have any equipment! Although they can record themselves using garage band at least.
I think headphones are a good place to start. Lots of people in the comments here have been recommending sites like Zencastr for remote podcasts- so that might be a good thing to check out if you’re working with people who aren’t too tech savvy.
You Americans always have to make it so complicated. Over in Germany, we just use Studio-Link and the Ultraschall plugin for Reaper and are done with it! We don't need to do double enders or care about syncing our recordings, because the audio over Studio-Link is good enough to just record it on the hosts computer. The only downsides are, that it doesn't work with video and you need a really stable connection, so Wi-Fi usually isn't stable enough. It's also quite common here, to publish our podcasts on WordPress, with the Podlove plugins.
I don't think it's an American, I think like you said, it's a network connection thing. I definitely don't have a stable enough connection to get the same quality audio as when I just record locally.
@@tombuck I ment it ironically, because we are sometimes a bit irritated about american podcasters. ;D Studio-Link uses the Opus-Codec and runs at a very low latency. So you don't need to have a fast internet connection (internet in Germany is really slow), it just has to be stable. Connecting the computer over ethernet is usually good enough. I like it, because I don't have to care about N-1 routing and getting the guests recording.
Tom…. it looks like your last episode aired in Oct 21. I’m curious to know how you’d do this today. Let’s say both parties have a Rodecaster Pro ii. Would you use a service or would you record each locally and match them up in post? What RCP settings would you recommend? Cheers.
For syncing, could you just unmute Peter from the mix-minus for a moment and have him snap his fingers at the beginning, then mute him again? I would probably have him do it at the beginning and end just to be safe and account for any sync drift that may happen or other complications.
Thanks for a great and detailed video. Why would you not record the audio via Zoom/skype through the Rodecaster Pro using the USB channel for the audio for @Peter and record multi-tracks for editing later? Works well for me, and needs little editing. Based on your video's, I bought a Rodecaster Pro and Podmic, thank you!!
So you prefer this method over the call in feature that the Rodecaster has? I’ve done call ins using the Rodecaster and it sounds like a phone call but in a good way. It’s super clear and the best thing is I don’t have to edit it.
I think that's fine for a one off guest, but for something where you've a regular co-host it's better to do a double-ender, as described in Tom's video.
Like Aaron said, I like the call in method for a one off interview, but since Peter and I cohost every episode, we wanted it to sound as good as possible. As a listener, I also get ear fatigue when something sounds “off” for too long, so I didn’t want to do that to anyone who would listen to this. 👍
The Enthusiasm Project I guess it’s just gonna take time for me to develop that sort it critical ear... if that makes sense. I hear call in shows all the time that are not double recorded and it doesn’t bother me as long as the audio isn’t trash and the content is entertaining.
@@404creators8 I did a podcast interview with Patrick Willems (look him up if you don't know him, great RUclips channel) where we spoke over Skype - recorded all 3 of us (regular hosts) and his channel on the bluetooth track in the Rodecaster, but Patrick also recorded himself on a Zoom H6 recorder at his end. We only used the Rodecaster track for syncing his much better audio, with great results. We absolutely could have used the Skype audio, but this way it sounded like he was right there with us.
Why do you mute him out on your Rodecaster Pro and not switch the RCP to Multitrack and then you'll get your audio and his audio on separate tracks? The RCP is kind of annoying that it creates multitrack wav forms for every single mic option whether something is plugged in or not, but you can delete everything except the Mic1 and USB. Or you could still have him record on his end as a backup just in case something happens. I also use Squadcast for remote interviews which will also create separate tracks for all parties, which would probably work better if you have more than 1 guest coming on.
That would definitely work, I just don’t personally like using the multitrack feature because it always gives you every track to import. I just like having the one file/track for me and one file/track for Peter. 🤷🏻♂️
Your audio has exceptional clarity. I certainly want to know your mic ( if an expensive one, a cheaper alternative that could approximate your mic well enough) and your editing of it afterward... please
Thanks so much! I have a bit of a mic addiction, so I change them a lot, but this video was recorded with the Rode Videomic NTG out of frame. I don't do a ton of processing to my audio, but I do usually triple check before recording that my levels are good and there's no interference happening. Sometimes I'll play with the EQ a bit to add some bass or remove some unpleasant frequencies, and if things are really rough, I'll used the "dereverb" option in Adobe Audition to reduce reverb from the room. I didn't do any of that here though, this was pretty much just straight out of the camera. The Videomic NTG is super awesome, honestly.

Hey @Tom when you say you have "his channel" muted, what exactly is his channel since he doesn't have a mic connected to your rodecaster? How are you hearing him through your headset?
Love the videos! So helpful! My question is, what would you do to set up 2 in-person people and one video guest. Trying to have both in person peeps see the video guest but all audio run through my rodecaster pro. Trying to figure out best way to do this. Any suggestions?
Basically the same thing, with two mics running into the Rodecaster and the remote person recording on their end if possible. You could also use something like Squadcast or Zencastr 👍
Great video! Quick question, how you make sure that the FaceTime audio isn't recorded on your solo recording mic track in GarageBand (with no rodecaster pro)?
You should be able to "Solo" your audio and the FaceTime audio to hear both tracks, then Mute the FaceTime audio to take it out of the mix. It could have changed, but that should work (and that's how it works on the Rodecaster too).
For the syncing, would an option be to do a Zoom call instead of FaceTime and record the session's audio in Zoom and use that as a sync track when you edit it all? Or would it just have lots of latencies from the internet and so on? I guess even if there were latencies, the audio would continually catch up with the right speed?
This is a great guide. If you were multi-track recording Peter, how do you find his audio as it shows up on the Rodecaster? Much worse than his locally recorded file? Loved the wide overhead time-lapse! I'd really suggest that people listen to your podcast with Peter - it's a real 'into-the-weeds' show hosted by two obviously enthusiastic camera geeks, and it's a lot of fun to listen to. I'd also urge you to take a look at Zencastr or a similar podcasting web-app. You get lossless audio recorded straight into the browser which you can download after, and the tracks will already be in sync for you. Worth testing, at the very least, especially if it saves some time. The only downside - no video currently, but they have a beta for video that I'm sure they'd value your thoughts on. Ennuicastr has video and is free at the moment, but it's GUI is pretty basic as it's still in development.
Weren’t we originally going to use Zencastr when we recorded together? I’ll have to,give it another look. For multitrack, Peter’s audio still doesn’t sound as good since it’s from FaceTime and has that digital garbliness to it.
@@tombuck It was Ennuicaster, or ecastr.com as it's listed. I think the problems we had that time were the mix-minus, the web-app's built in mix-minus was working against the Rodecaster (or both Rodecasters, since we were both using them). Happy to be a guinea-pig if you fancy testing it out on someone without dragging Peter into podcast development hell!

Hey Tom - Are you familiar with the other services out there now like Squadcast, Riverside, and Zencastr? I tried Zencastr and couldn't ever even get it to work on my machine. It seems like it may be more geared towards Mac users, but that's total speculation on my part.
I may have a better way to record a remote host that sounds like he's in the same room. I used to do a podcast and I was the remote host and here was my set up. I ran a mumble server on a raspberry pi and the host would send his audio to me via that, and I'd send my audio and video over to him via skype. Thus we'd have full duplex communication and I'd sound like I was in the same room. No sending tracks and editing them in with sync issues. Easy peasy. On your side, you mix minus him out when sending audio, but you'll be recording the full mix. I did this with him for years when I lived two hours away, then I moved to another country and continued it. With one exception. Instead of using the raspberry pi, I just used a virtual cloud server (AWS) and would fire it up when we did a show and shut it down after we were done. This way we could connect to each other anywhere on the planet.
Honestly you dont even need do to that. I have a podcast with a friend across the country and we use zoom/google for a video meeting. All of the audio comes through the rodecaster pro and then i send directly to anchor.
You can definitely get some outstanding results that way, but I haven’t been able to get reliably good quality that beats recording locally (could just be my internet connection).

In a situation where you have a mix of other people in person and remote. Using solo and mute is awesome for me as the host, but the other people with me physically can't hear the remote person. Is there a way to allow the other local people hear the muted USB line without it being recorded on the track?
Hmm, have you tried putting all of the people with you on solo and keeping the USB line solo/muted? Staring at my Rodecaster now, that's the only thing I cna think of.

I'ver thought about it, but my calendar is so full at the moment, I don't know that I can effectively do one more thing. I have had good results with Ecamm though. It keeps the higher video/audio quality, and I have recorded a few interviews that way.
Hey Tom you been a lifesaver. Quick question I keep looking down at my monitor at the guests instead of having my eyes up n at the camera? Is there something I can buy where I can put up near my camera to change my line of sight?
You could look into a teleprompter. I have a review of a GlideGear one that I use sometimes. Instead of displaying your script, you could display your Zoom meeting.
Have you ever thought about using FCPX for your podcast audio editing?? Speaking of simplifying. We also use Buzzsprout and just last week asked what various people were using. I was surprised to learn that a lot of people use FCPX for their podcast editing. What your thoughts on this. I would think you would be doing it this way given your experience. Love to hear your thoughts.
It’s totally usable and in a way would make sense since I’m so familiar with the app, but I like using this as an opportunity to learn more about different software like Adobe Audition. I also think that a dedicated audio editor is going to give more control over everything 🤷🏻♂️

If you want to get logic pro x, i saw you're in the education field, look at the pro app bundle for education from apple, you can get logic and 4 other pro apps like final cut and mainstage.
I've definitely been interested in Logic! I already have Final Cut and Motion though, so the Education bundle doesn't save quite as much. In the meantime, I've really been digging Adobe Audition. Thanks for the kind words!

I have a RCP, but the person I want to join me on a podcast is not equipped with all the stuff Peter has. He would call in via iphone or android (not sure what he has). Is there a mic/adapter combo to get better quality from a smartphone? The mic on the phone is usable. But, if there's a better option, I'd like to give it a try. I'm not sure he has access to a computer, so I wanted to ask about equipment I *know* he has. Thanks
Most phones, whether iOS or Android will have mic options available. Rode even has a line of mobile mics that work pretty well (I've only use the iPhone versions, but they're nice).
Hi ! I might be a little late, but for a synching solution, why don't you just solo Peter (the USB channel) at the beginning of your FaceTime call, just a few seconds to have his voice, have him begin his record too, and then solo and mute him ? That way you'll have his voice from his and and from your end to sync it perfectly, right?
Hi Tom. I'm in the midst of attempting to execute this exact setup (I'm in Phoenix, co-host in Los Angeles). I'm using the Rodecaster Pro with my MacBook and he's recording into Audacity on his PC (Booooooo on PCs) as opposed to Garage Band. My question is: When you set up your monitoring, you mentioned you have him solo'd and muted so you can hear him via the USB channel with his FaceTime audio - are you able to hear yourself in your headphones, or just Peter? For some reason, I'm experiencing an either/or situation and not able to hear both of us at the same time. Thank you for your time and dedication to your videos (and podcasts). Cheers!
Great question- you should also have yourself solo’d. That way you’ll hear both of you, but only your voice will be recorded. Thanks for the kind words!

Quick question, hopefully I didn't miss this point - Is there a way to monitor your microphone's audio as well as hear the other person's facetime audio simultaneously from your computer when using this facetime approach? Currently for my podcast we are using two sets of headphones at once to get this effect: one ear is the mic audio from the computer, the other is connected to the facetime audio on an iphone. This approach works ok, but would love to consolidate. Thank you in advance!
I run everything through the Rodecaster, so that takes care of it. Beyond that, another interface like the Scarlett would probably do the trick. I’ve never had luck monitoring from the computer directly without latency issues.

Thank you for these awesome tips! I am preparing to film interviews and could really use your (or your tech team’s) help. How can I record video interviews without any of the people needing to wear headphones? I see many of the late night shows where the host and the celebrity guest are in separate locations speaking with each other, and neither of them have earbuds or headphones. They turn their heads and move around, there doesn’t even appear to be an earbud with a cord tucked behind their ears. I want to be able to record each speaker’s audio as separate recordings so they can be mixed in post, but I want to avoid anyone wearing visible headphones. I considered using lav mics on each person, however I was told told that the lav mics will still pick up the audio from the computer speakers being used for each person to hear each other. Do you know how I may be able to create this no-headphones effect?
There's no elegant way to do it. If the volume on someone's computer is turned up too loudly, you'll get echo and feedback. You can always try keeping the computer volume very low and sometimes that works.
@@tombuck thank you. I’ll buy a lav for myself and try it with my computer volume turned down. Most of the guests won’t have mic setups, so they will probably need headphones, or I can lineup the the audio tracks in post and maybe get them to match.
I wonder the quality of studio voice recorded is all magic of pro mics and gears and correction on post? Let me explain with an example, your voice has a pleasant vibration and resonance. Is it your natural voice or you created to be like that? What if I find my voice not pleasant as should be. I don't know, maybe doesn't have some frequency that should have. Is it possible to achieve a good voice by professional radio/studio mics ? Is it possible to fake it or create it in post? I hope I made the point. Sorry for my bad English. I'm based on Belgium.
Hello in Belgium! I do very little post processing (if any at all), so I'll take your comments as kind compliments, haha! You can definitely adjust the quality of sound to better suit your ear, which usually includes modifying the highs and/or lows. Depending on which software you're editing with, you might also be able to create a preset and apply it to all future clips with one click.

WE use buzzsprout also! We also use a service called Zencastr to recored both audio streams at the same time. it runs post production and gives a final edit that is just one stream so no syncing up. both voice, one audio file, super cool. Great video as always!
What if you have a podcast guest who is not techically blessed? I have some guests who aren't podcasters and some barely know how to navigate a zoom call. How do I ensure the quality of the sound and possibly a video?
You’ll have to give the,so,e kind of tech training, but even if they can just record into the voice memo app in their phone and send you the file, it’ll sound a lot better. You might also want to try a service like Zencastr to see if that simplifies things.
Check out reaper.fm if you ever want a new mixing/recording solution. It's very customizable, they offer a free/temp version and similar to GarageBand for ease of use for basic recording/mixing. Just a suggestion. #NotAnAd
hi! great video! i tried to do that to aidacity with my cohost but after we finished our recording she couldn't send me her audacity file in order to connect them. How can she send fer file to me? (we tried email, drive, wetransfer but couldn't make it). Does she has to convert it to mp3 first or she is it okay to send me her audacity recording? If it's okay how can she send it to me? Good tips. I have a video podcast interviewing others. I have tried the mix minus setting on the usb channel but I am still getting guest bleed into my local mic channel. I will give the solo approach a try.
Zencastr is a great service for this very thing. I podcast with my buddy in Texas and I'm in Scotland. It handles syncing too by having the recording start on both audio tracks at the same time.
Or there is interview mode directly in ECamm now too.
There are a lot of awesome options out there- riverside.fm being another one.

Have u tried both setting an alarm on your phone? If they sync with time servers your clocks should be running more or less in sync. (taking into account the time difference). pick a loud clear sound and you should be good to go. Come to think about it, this could be a good plugin idea 💡

I didn't get to watch this in full, so I may have missed it, but have you tried Zencastr? It basically records the audio on both ends and sets them up for delivery directly after the chat.

It's pretty magical that this stuff is possible!
I use Audacity to do my final edits, I'm on a Windows PC. With the Rodecaster Pro I have the caller join via cell phone (mix-minus) and record to the SD card. I have the caller record their audio at their location and send it to me. It's easy to sync in Audacity since the wave forms are the same from the cell phone feed and the audio they sent me. No clapping involved. Voices align with the video too, no delays.

You could also record in multitrack on the Rodecaster and then use that to sync his recording with yours. And since it's multitrack you can just replace Peter's track with the recording he sends your way.
That’s true. I usually don’t use multitrack just because I don’t like dealing with all of the empty tracks that get imported too.
Cool.. will consider this approach... been using zencastr currently because it uploads locally recorded audio to the cloud directly. But that still experiences some compression... drives me nuts sometimes... wish every guest or co-host had good equipment. 😅

This is a great setup for a co-host. What about guests? How do you keep great quality when this unpredictable element comes into ply? Do you have a podcast on integration? I know you can plug the iPhone into the Rode.
I don’t have a video on integration, but if you have the Rodecaster, it has a built in call feature. Anchor also has a talk with friends feature, and there are other services like Zencastr that make it a little easier to bring in a guest.
Of course you could always do the same method in this video with more than two people too.
I use SquadCast and it makes the process easy for remote guests who are not very computer savvy.

Ok I’ve watched it. Excellent info thanks buddy. I just have 1 more question... what if the other podcasters you do the podcast with arent like Peter and are relative newbies? That would mean they won’t have a mic (not a pro one anyway). What would you suggest? Record through their headphones (if they’re apple they’d have a mic right?). The other 2 guys I’m starting with won’t have any equipment! Although they can record themselves using garage band at least.
I think headphones are a good place to start. Lots of people in the comments here have been recommending sites like Zencastr for remote podcasts- so that might be a good thing to check out if you’re working with people who aren’t too tech savvy.
You Americans always have to make it so complicated. Over in Germany, we just use Studio-Link and the Ultraschall plugin for Reaper and are done with it! We don't need to do double enders or care about syncing our recordings, because the audio over Studio-Link is good enough to just record it on the hosts computer. The only downsides are, that it doesn't work with video and you need a really stable connection, so Wi-Fi usually isn't stable enough. It's also quite common here, to publish our podcasts on WordPress, with the Podlove plugins.
I don't think it's an American, I think like you said, it's a network connection thing. I definitely don't have a stable enough connection to get the same quality audio as when I just record locally.
@@tombuck I ment it ironically, because we are sometimes a bit irritated about american podcasters. ;D Studio-Link uses the Opus-Codec and runs at a very low latency. So you don't need to have a fast internet connection (internet in Germany is really slow), it just has to be stable. Connecting the computer over ethernet is usually good enough.
I like it, because I don't have to care about N-1 routing and getting the guests recording.

Are you using the multi recording function on the rodecaster pro to record in garage band or recording directly to the rodecaster pro via micro SD
I’m recording directly to the Rodecaster using single track. You could definitely do it many other ways, but I like to keep it simple.
Tom…. it looks like your last episode aired in Oct 21. I’m curious to know how you’d do this today. Let’s say both parties have a Rodecaster Pro ii. Would you use a service or would you record each locally and match them up in post? What RCP settings would you recommend? Cheers.
For syncing, could you just unmute Peter from the mix-minus for a moment and have him snap his fingers at the beginning, then mute him again? I would probably have him do it at the beginning and end just to be safe and account for any sync drift that may happen or other complications.
We've tried stuff like that, but I think the connection delay just makes it funky. It's not too difficult to line things up in Audition fortunately.

Why would you not record the audio via Zoom/skype through the Rodecaster Pro using the USB channel for the audio for @Peter and record multi-tracks for editing later?

So you prefer this method over the call in feature that the Rodecaster has? I’ve done call ins using the Rodecaster and it sounds like a phone call but in a good way. It’s super clear and the best thing is I don’t have to edit it.
I think that's fine for a one off guest, but for something where you've a regular co-host it's better to do a double-ender, as described in Tom's video.
Like Aaron said, I like the call in method for a one off interview, but since Peter and I cohost every episode, we wanted it to sound as good as possible.
As a listener, I also get ear fatigue when something sounds “off” for too long, so I didn’t want to do that to anyone who would listen to this. 👍
The Enthusiasm Project I guess it’s just gonna take time for me to develop that sort it critical ear... if that makes sense. I hear call in shows all the time that are not double recorded and it doesn’t bother me as long as the audio isn’t trash and the content is entertaining.
@@404creators8 I did a podcast interview with Patrick Willems (look him up if you don't know him, great RUclips channel) where we spoke over Skype - recorded all 3 of us (regular hosts) and his channel on the bluetooth track in the Rodecaster, but Patrick also recorded himself on a Zoom H6 recorder at his end. We only used the Rodecaster track for syncing his much better audio, with great results. We absolutely could have used the Skype audio, but this way it sounded like he was right there with us.

Why do you mute him out on your Rodecaster Pro and not switch the RCP to Multitrack and then you'll get your audio and his audio on separate tracks? The RCP is kind of annoying that it creates multitrack wav forms for every single mic option whether something is plugged in or not, but you can delete everything except the Mic1 and USB. Or you could still have him record on his end as a backup just in case something happens.
I also use Squadcast for remote interviews which will also create separate tracks for all parties, which would probably work better if you have more than 1 guest coming on.
That would definitely work, I just don’t personally like using the multitrack feature because it always gives you every track to import. I just like having the one file/track for me and one file/track for Peter. 🤷🏻♂️
what kind of camera stand do you use for your setup? looks great
I use an old Manfrotto tripod with the Edelkrone SliderOne on top of it.
Your audio has exceptional clarity. I certainly want to know your mic ( if an expensive one, a cheaper alternative that could approximate your mic well enough) and your editing of it afterward... please
Thanks so much! I have a bit of a mic addiction, so I change them a lot, but this video was recorded with the Rode Videomic NTG out of frame. I don't do a ton of processing to my audio, but I do usually triple check before recording that my levels are good and there's no interference happening.
Sometimes I'll play with the EQ a bit to add some bass or remove some unpleasant frequencies, and if things are really rough, I'll used the "dereverb" option in Adobe Audition to reduce reverb from the room. I didn't do any of that here though, this was pretty much just straight out of the camera. The Videomic NTG is super awesome, honestly.

My question is, what would you do to set up 2 in-person people and one video guest. Trying to have both in person peeps see the video guest but all audio run through my rodecaster pro. Trying to figure out best way to do this. Any suggestions?
Basically the same thing, with two mics running into the Rodecaster and the remote person recording on their end if possible. You could also use something like Squadcast or Zencastr 👍
Great video! Quick question, how you make sure that the FaceTime audio isn't recorded on your solo recording mic track in GarageBand (with no rodecaster pro)?
You should be able to "Solo" your audio and the FaceTime audio to hear both tracks, then Mute the FaceTime audio to take it out of the mix. It could have changed, but that should work (and that's how it works on the Rodecaster too).

For the syncing, would an option be to do a Zoom call instead of FaceTime and record the session's audio in Zoom and use that as a sync track when you edit it all? Or would it just have lots of latencies from the internet and so on? I guess even if there were latencies, the audio would continually catch up with the right speed?
That could work, but it’s really not too tough to just align the tracks in editing software.
This is a great guide. If you were multi-track recording Peter, how do you find his audio as it shows up on the Rodecaster? Much worse than his locally recorded file? Loved the wide overhead time-lapse!
I'd really suggest that people listen to your podcast with Peter - it's a real 'into-the-weeds' show hosted by two obviously enthusiastic camera geeks, and it's a lot of fun to listen to.
I'd also urge you to take a look at Zencastr or a similar podcasting web-app. You get lossless audio recorded straight into the browser which you can download after, and the tracks will already be in sync for you. Worth testing, at the very least, especially if it saves some time. The only downside - no video currently, but they have a beta for video that I'm sure they'd value your thoughts on. Ennuicastr has video and is free at the moment, but it's GUI is pretty basic as it's still in development.

For multitrack, Peter’s audio still doesn’t sound as good since it’s from FaceTime and has that digital garbliness to it.
@@tombuck It was Ennuicaster, or ecastr.com as it's listed. I think the problems we had that time were the mix-minus, the web-app's built in mix-minus was working against the Rodecaster (or both Rodecasters, since we were both using them).
Happy to be a guinea-pig if you fancy testing it out on someone without dragging Peter into podcast development hell!

Hey Tom - Are you familiar with the other services out there now like Squadcast, Riverside, and Zencastr? I tried Zencastr and couldn't ever even get it to work on my machine. It seems like it may be more geared towards Mac users, but that's total speculation on my part.
I've only ever used Squadcast as a guest, but it was super easy and the ned results were awesome.
@@tombuck I never could get Squadcast to work, but so far I've tried Cleanfeed and Remotely, and both have really great sound quality.
I may have a better way to record a remote host that sounds like he's in the same room. I used to do a podcast and I was the remote host and here was my set up. I ran a mumble server on a raspberry pi and the host would send his audio to me via that, and I'd send my audio and video over to him via skype. Thus we'd have full duplex communication and I'd sound like I was in the same room. No sending tracks and editing them in with sync issues. Easy peasy. On your side, you mix minus him out when sending audio, but you'll be recording the full mix.
I did this with him for years when I lived two hours away, then I moved to another country and continued it. With one exception. Instead of using the raspberry pi, I just used a virtual cloud server (AWS) and would fire it up when we did a show and shut it down after we were done. This way we could connect to each other anywhere on the planet.
The audio on all your podcasts is very crispy!
It really does pay to have the right tools for the job!
I just bought the RODECaster Pro for my RUclips and Podcast channel, but I can’t afford to buy the Rode PodMic. I’m very happy with my Rodecaster pro.

Honestly you dont even need do to that. I have a podcast with a friend across the country and we use zoom/google for a video meeting. All of the audio comes through the rodecaster pro and then i send directly to anchor.
You can definitely get some outstanding results that way, but I haven’t been able to get reliably good quality that beats recording locally (could just be my internet connection).

In a situation where you have a mix of other people in person and remote. Using solo and mute is awesome for me as the host, but the other people with me physically can't hear the remote person. Is there a way to allow the other local people hear the muted USB line without it being recorded on the track?
Hmm, have you tried putting all of the people with you on solo and keeping the USB line solo/muted? Staring at my Rodecaster now, that's the only thing I cna think of.

I'ver thought about it, but my calendar is so full at the moment, I don't know that I can effectively do one more thing. I have had good results with Ecamm though. It keeps the higher video/audio quality, and I have recorded a few interviews that way.

You could look into a teleprompter. I have a review of a GlideGear one that I use sometimes. Instead of displaying your script, you could display your Zoom meeting.

Have you ever thought about using FCPX for your podcast audio editing?? Speaking of simplifying. We also use Buzzsprout and just last week asked what various people were using. I was surprised to learn that a lot of people use FCPX for their podcast editing.

If you want to get logic pro x, i saw you're in the education field, look at the pro app bundle for education from apple, you can get logic and 4 other pro apps like final cut and mainstage.
I've definitely been interested in Logic! I already have Final Cut and Motion though, so the Education bundle doesn't save quite as much. In the meantime, I've really been digging Adobe Audition. Thanks for the kind words!

For this workflow you'll need some sort of recorder, and the RCP is my interface of choice.
I have a RCP, but the person I want to join me on a podcast is not equipped with all the stuff Peter has. He would call in via iphone or android (not sure what he has). Is there a mic/adapter combo to get better quality from a smartphone? The mic on the phone is usable. But, if there's a better option, I'd like to give it a try. I'm not sure he has access to a computer, so I wanted to ask about equipment I *know* he has. Thanks
Most phones, whether iOS or Android will have mic options available. Rode even has a line of mobile mics that work pretty well (I've only use the iPhone versions, but they're nice).

I might be a little late, but for a synching solution, why don't you just solo Peter (the USB channel) at the beginning of your FaceTime call, just a few seconds to have his voice, have him begin his record too, and then solo and mute him ? That way you'll have his voice from his and and from your end to sync it perfectly, right?
That could work, but there’s usually a bit of delay that I’ll need to cut out no matter what- at least in my experience.

Hi Tom. I'm in the midst of attempting to execute this exact setup (I'm in Phoenix, co-host in Los Angeles). I'm using the Rodecaster Pro with my MacBook and he's recording into Audacity on his PC (Booooooo on PCs) as opposed to Garage Band. My question is: When you set up your monitoring, you mentioned you have him solo'd and muted so you can hear him via the USB channel with his FaceTime audio - are you able to hear yourself in your headphones, or just Peter? For some reason, I'm experiencing an either/or situation and not able to hear both of us at the same time. Thank you for your time and dedication to your videos (and podcasts). Cheers!
Great question- you should also have yourself solo’d. That way you’ll hear both of you, but only your voice will be recorded.

A USB mic directly to the computer works great (that's what Peter does).

They could probably use the built in voice recorder app on the phone for best quality.

Quick question, hopefully I didn't miss this point - Is there a way to monitor your microphone's audio as well as hear the other person's facetime audio simultaneously from your computer when using this facetime approach? Currently for my podcast we are using two sets of headphones at once to get this effect: one ear is the mic audio from the computer, the other is connected to the facetime audio on an iphone. This approach works ok, but would love to consolidate. Thank you in advance!
I run everything through the Rodecaster, so that takes care of it. Beyond that, another interface like the Scarlett would probably do the trick. I’ve never had luck monitoring from the computer directly without latency issues.

How can I record video interviews without any of the people needing to wear headphones?
I see many of the late night shows where the host and the celebrity guest are in separate locations speaking with each other, and neither of them have earbuds or headphones. They turn their heads and move around, there doesn’t even appear to be an earbud with a cord tucked behind their ears.
I want to be able to record each speaker’s audio as separate recordings so they can be mixed in post, but I want to avoid anyone wearing visible headphones.
I considered using lav mics on each person, however I was told told that the lav mics will still pick up the audio from the computer speakers being used for each person to hear each other.
Do you know how I may be able to create this no-headphones effect?
There's no elegant way to do it. If the volume on someone's computer is turned up too loudly, you'll get echo and feedback. You can always try keeping the computer volume very low and sometimes that works.
@@tombuck thank you. I’ll buy a lav for myself and try it with my computer volume turned down. Most of the guests won’t have mic setups, so they will probably need headphones, or I can lineup the the audio tracks in post and maybe get them to match.

I wonder the quality of studio voice recorded is all magic of pro mics and gears and correction on post? Let me explain with an example, your voice has a pleasant vibration and resonance. Is it your natural voice or you created to be like that? What if I find my voice not pleasant as should be. I don't know, maybe doesn't have some frequency that should have. Is it possible to achieve a good voice by professional radio/studio mics ? Is it possible to fake it or create it in post?

Hello in Belgium! I do very little post processing (if any at all), so I'll take your comments as kind compliments, haha! You can definitely adjust the quality of sound to better suit your ear, which usually includes modifying the highs and/or lows. Depending on which software you're editing with, you might also be able to create a preset and apply it to all future clips with one click.

If you’re using Final Cut or Premiere, there are built in syncing and multicam editing options that are definitely worth exploring!

This is audio only, but I haven’t too many issues with sound sync at 24fps

I've never seen Soundtrap before, looks great. Must give it a try. Any idea if its track syncing is decent?

WE use buzzsprout also! We also use a service called Zencastr to recored both audio streams at the same time. it runs post production and gives a final edit that is just one stream so no syncing up. both voice, one audio file, super cool. Great video as always!

What if you have a podcast guest who is not techically blessed? I have some guests who aren't podcasters and some barely know how to navigate a zoom call. How do I ensure the quality of the sound and possibly a video?
You’ll have to give the,so,e kind of tech training, but even if they can just record into the voice memo app in their phone and send you the file, it’ll sound a lot better. You might also want to try a service like Zencastr to see if that simplifies things.

Check out reaper.fm if you ever want a new mixing/recording solution. It's very customizable, they offer a free/temp version and similar to GarageBand for ease of use for basic recording/mixing. Just a suggestion. #NotAnAd
hi! great video! i tried to do that to aidacity with my cohost but after we finished our recording she couldn't send me her audacity file in order to connect them. How can she send fer file to me? (we tried email, drive, wetransfer but couldn't make it). Does she has to convert it to mp3 first or she is it okay to send me her audacity recording? If it's okay how can she send it to me?

I haven't used Audacity myself, but I've always had good luck with Google Drive and Dropbox for file transfers.
