I say it was an overall success. Once you get farther down the learning curve you'll be milling those beams much faster. This mill certainly makes it easy to get every last board out of a log. Looking forward to the rest of the the journey for your timber frame house.

Awesome! Some builders put their initials and date on a log or beam, especially the first one. I wish I could give you my oak trees, there are so many around here and I need some of them gone and so do others here-- they get sawn up for firewood... mind you they aren't an ideal size, but some are 15" and up.... Stay safe ❣❣

Thats a good idea! I am thinking I might do a few carvings on some of the beams, we will definitely leave our mark! We will probably mark out the first one. Haha yes I could use some oak trees, we need a lot 😅 we might have to pick up a few more, we will see what we end up with after this pile is done. Thanks, you too!

I'm going to build a post and beam A-Frame out of white pine....Can't wait to get started. Going to set up at a friends yard. As you know I have a year to get every thing ready! I will be posting vids on the set up. mill shed, storage, build area.. We have 100ft x 250ft area for the set up. Good luck with everything! Will be watching!

That sounds like a sweet project! Good luck to you as well! I hope to build a sawmill shed as well, time might not allow me to this year though. I will be waiting to see your progress 👍

Hey what's the system you have for holding the logs in place? I've got a lucas mill in the mail which is going to be a big change from my current bandsaw. I'm keeping an eye on different systems people use for keeping the logs in place.

They are Log dogs from Mahoe, steel bunks with aluminum pieces and grab the log. Works pretty well.

Hi Fellow Mahoe Minimax owners! When I cut beams I've been taking the mill back and then pusing the beam off to the left. I'll do that for that "deck" of the log, and then I'll pick up all of the beams at once from the side with forks. I've also found that the vertical measurement is very accurate but there have been times when the far end hasn't gone all the way down due to sawdust or whatever. So now when I lower the far end I give it a couple of stomps to make sure that it is at the bottom and so my beam doesn't taper because it's not.

Thats a good idea, only thing is I feel like dropping the heavy beam onto the bunks could move the log. That did happen to me once as well but it hasn't happened since then with the mill sticking up a little.

@@SharpeTimber i purchased the same log dogs as you but ended up not using them. i cut 4 8x12s and use those beams to roll the logs up to the mill. so when i push off a beam it lands on the beams. i'll use a wedge on each side of the log to hold it in place when i'm cutting.

You guys are killing it! 👍❤️. Do you have to factor some cure time into this process before actually assembling anything?

Thanks Dave! I will let the beams cure for a month or two before I start doing the joinery.
