Devin checkmates chat so well i love it. This was a great stream with a lot of discussion on the importance of spreading your content across multiple platforms like RUclips too. Its worth checking out the vod for more.
Also, another interesting point to make for chess is that their is also a lot of variants to the game of chess. Anti-chess, atomic chess, horde chess, odds games, racing kings, 960 chess, 4 player chess, etc. Even though you only have one game in chess there are so many ways to play it that you not only have infinite content in the way mentioned in the video but you can also re-brand the game infinitely as well seemingly. Certain video games like Fortnite are only gonna be able to come up with so many modes or ways to play. However, chess has an overly abundant amount of ways to play. For example, on lichess.org which is more known for their variant games and arena tournaments, there are many players that are not good at standard chess but very good at variants. They might can even compete with top level chess players in these variants. These variants also have large sub-followings in chess and compete in their own world championship cycles. Chess is so blessed to have this already built into the system. Get a couple of personalities from youtube/Twitch, get top level GMs, and hardcore casuals that are good at the varient and BAM a whole new version of the game that people can get addicted to, view, and not get bored with. Chess is really an unfulfilled marketing dream.
I love watching Chess on Twitch. I started by watching Hutch - I was already subbed to him and it was unusual for me to see him play chess. It got me back into it cause it's an interesting game with plenty of logic and techniques or tactics. It's one of the fairest games on earth and is based entirely on your own mental aptitude. Then I started to get a little more serious, found Ben Finegold teaching on youtube along with a fair few others like Agadmator and Eric Rosen and checking out which of them streamed. There also aren't too many people, they all have unique personalities and are pretty chill and they all know eachother meaning the community is already in place to transfer over to Twitch. There are a lot of small reasons that Twitch is great for watching and learning chess.
Good commentary and great analysis on the rise of the Chess category. I agree that there will most likely be an explosion of streamers delving into chess and we have already started to see that. I am interested to see how the personalities play out and what comes of the game on streaming platforms overall. Keep up the great work.

Jerry from chess network is a legend. Literally didn't give a crap about chess then randomly saw his stream and youtube years and year ago and got completely sucked in for a long while. I didn't even like watching video game streams, but his chess ones were so good.
The thing Devin misses is that chess streaming was incredibly split between a couple of platforms, I think the only broadcaster who consistently streamed on Twitch was the Chess.com channel. Twitch is all about personalities and the chess scene didn't understand that until recently. Everyone interested in chess already followed it, you had to be interesting as a personality to attract non chess viewers.
10 to 20% of the hours watched in the chess section were actually spent watching computer tournaments :p For some time there were 2 championship channels ( TCEC_Chess_TV and computerchess from chess.com ) and, when the interest for Leela Chess Zero (chess AI developped by the community trying to reproduce Deepmind's results with Alphazero) was at its peak, few test channels streaming 24/7. You can search Leela Chess Zero for more info. She's on top of the world at this moment.
Never heard of you before but after watching Hikaru's reaction to this video on his youtube page I must say this is very interesting. I play chess casually as a hobby (mostly blitz aka the juice as some put it). I started noticing that sites like chess.com, lichess, and chess24 would have 25k, 40k, 50k, people concurrently on their websites playing at once and more during tournaments with millions of members on their websites. I always wondered if chess would ever connect like an esport. Jerry of ChessNetwork set the groundwork but Hikaru streaming on twitch and Agadmentor's youtube channel i think shows the potential chess has. People are starting to see what an awakening of a game that has been "dormant" but popular for years can do. What chess has to do now is embrace its new spotlight and convert it into stable greatness. They have the player base, the watcher base, the sport tournament base (especially world championship) and dominate personality types that can carry them. It really now it is up to them. This is such a fun time to be a fan of chess and a player of the game. I can't wait to see what is gonna happen next.
