I bought a special tool to remove that last part you took off instead of using channel locks. Good tip on using a wash rag if you don’t have that special tool though.

OK, Troll, I just bought a plug for my Hayward SP1091LX skimmer. The original winter "aquadoor" that came with my pool is a horrible design. Once I get this plug installed, I'll check back in and let you know what I think. ✌

I have another hole below the skimmer plug to attach the pool cleaning device. How do I seal that hole?

Does the sand filter have to be brought inside? I can someone doing it with a small one, but the one I have has 350 lbs of sand in it.

I used to wheel it into the garage for the winter. I stopped doing that several years ago with no issues. I’m in the northeast.

@beachtroll8344 Good to know, I'm in New England, so basically just drain the filter and turn the valve on top to winter and I should be good to go.

I tried the tool free cover years back and it came off during the winter.

So did you have any leaks thru the winter at the skimmer plate

I don't recommend using this. When I took off the winter cover, the plate was off and stuck to the pool wall... Didn't work.

beachtroll I tired the skimmer plug for the first time last season - it initially worked, but as soon as the water started to freeze, the skimmer plug started to allow water to drain out slowly and cause large icicles to form from the slimmer outlet. It was ineffective and could have potentially caused the ice to form in the skimmer and crack it (but luckily that didn’t occur). I have been looking for an effective solution to avoid drain the water level in the above ground pool, but have yet to find one.

@@ErikAsquith there are ways to plug the skimmer so you dont have to drain, there are faceplates you can buy that are fitted for your skimmer plate ,but I dont want to chance taking my front plate off to mount them
