I just revisited your H2R layout builder & I just discovered you inclided the DJP code builder. You have just saved me so many hours of work as I'm always having to do them all by guesswork for new compositions for my streams! THANK YOU!!!!
This was really helpful thanks. Your layout creator is really impressive and amazing that it is free to use. I will buy the pack of layouts as soon as I'm at my desk! Thanks for all the tips, keep it up!
Great video. The super source feature makes the extreme worth it in my book. Thankfully with a little ingenuity you can create a professional side by side with animated background on the OG ATEM. I even made a video about it.
Great video! Is there a way to cross fade between two different super source layouts? For example I have one layout which has an overlay as a DSK with camera 1 in the background. I’ve then got the same layout but switch to camera 2. Is there a way to fade rather than cut between them. Or bring them into preview first and then programme the auto to transition them into programme? I haven’t found a way to successfully do this yet :(
I do far more complex video compositions, on the fly, with Wirecast and NDI sources. On the fly adjustment of drop shadows, text, graphics, cropping and proc amp controls for every separate element of the video composition. As a former Fox News TD, I find Wirecast a much more controllable, elegant option to hardware switchers. I am a Mac guy, but I am sure the same may be said for VMix. What I wish Blackmagic would produce is an affordable, multiple NDI conversion box (say 8 SDI/HDMI inputs to 8 NDI or NDIHX feeds).
I purchased your pack and love it. I also love the "make your own" layout site. I would love it if you could add the ability to add a border on the site. That would be awesome! Any chance of adding that? In lew of that is there some standard line of code that you could provide that I could just add into the macro file?
hellow HTR... big fan of your videos. I have a question. I am a bit confused of why the Extreme ISO doesnt record the Supersource? Im i doing it wrong or is it just not made for that? And if it isnt, do you have a video of which a smart way to get the same layouts as supersource, onto your ISO recording. Did that make sense? regards and big UP's from DK
This is awesome! Thanks so much for sharing! :-) Followup question: let’s say you setup SSrc how you want it looking as well as add your logo. If you change what file(s) is in MP 1 or 2 while you’re already live with MP files displaying, will it delete/remove the media files that were displaying on screen? Do you see BMD in the future adding the feature of allowing video files (mov, mp4, etc) to be put in the media pool or maybe a motion picture version of the media pool? Hope that made sense! Thanks! - Jared
So I actually have a question for you: why would I choose the atem mini over software based solution in your opinion? A couple of weeks ago I streamed a 5 cameras live concert (1h30m) to facebook, with digitally zoomed scenes for different looks, up to 3 cameras split screen, overlay graphics, pre recorded video ads, i even sharpened the image coming out of an older canon dslr and added some color correction to better match the other cameras... I used obs and a 2012 macmini i7 quad with 16GB of ram, 2 internal drives (256GB ssd + 1TB hdd). For the video inputs i used inexpensive hdmi to usb chinese cards (about 18$ each on amazon) and a usb3 hub for a couple of extra usbs. The mini was definitely too hot but didn’t flinch, I even recorded the streaming on the internal HDD. Now I replaced the thermal paste and added an external fan (ran a few tests and with this little mod i went from 104C to 70C with 98% constant cpu usage) I basically spent only 150$ ish... 100ish for the hdmi cards 30ish for the fan and 10ish for the thermal paste. It is definitely loud now with the fans on.. but other than noise... what’s the advantage of the atem mini? Why not buy an elgato streamdeck for example if i just wanna add physical buttons? There’s literally NOBODY talking about this on the internet... i can’t be the only one confused about this can i?
This is a good question, and the reason it is not a discussion in any of my videos is that the two options "Hardware-based" vs "Software-based" is an extremely lengthy and detailed chat with a lot of variables. I use vMix all the time on desktops and laptops and am always happy with all of the options that I have which go far beyond the options of my ATEMs in many ways. What you have to keep in mind is that there are pros and cons in both areas and depending on your experience one option can be much easier than the other. Just to break it down a little into some pros and cons of each... Hardware based: Pro: The device has been custom built to achieve one task (or tasks) and is optimized to carry out those tasks. Con: Hardware limitations and costing means that devices cannot do everything you might want them to do. Software based: Pro: You can achieve a lot of interesting and dynamic productions all within a software switcher and scale it over time to suit your needs. Con: Your computer might decide to work on something in the background that you don't notice is impacting your production negatively. I have just started working on blog post about this as there is too much to discuss in this one comment :D
If you have say camera one with green screen (chroma) and it has a mp1 image as the background can you bring it into supersource with this key ? If so please let me know how to do this

Hi John! as i can see in your still (mountain still, with snow at night), maybe you use Apple KEYNOTE... i have one problem that can find solution... I made some graphics to use as stiils in the AMEI media pool, exported with NO FILL background (transparent) and set the atem for premultiplied... The exported graphics looks good on the file, but when superimposed on the Atem, looks awful Aliased on the borders, what can i try to do? THANKS!!
Hi John, maybe I missed it, but is it possible to have multiple super sources created and ready to use? I am looking to use this device as a video game tournament recorder where 4 consoles each have their own camera recording the players. So I would like 4 setups, each console input with the corresponding camera. essentially 4 inputs each with their own PIP. Hope that makes sense. Thanks!
Yes Matt - this is possible, however you will want to have these set up as macros, then trigger each macro depending on what layout you want at the time.
Great! Do you know if the ATEM rememberers my custom super source layouts even when powered off? We want to use this without a laptop with the ATEM software. Just have a default custom super source layout saved in the ATEM, plug everything in when on location, and we expect it to work instantly. Is that so? Thanks
Let's say I had PowerPoint input on the mixer running from a computer into the mixer. Could I have say Camera 1 layered on top of that video from the computer? I also see people laying video on top of graphics but never video on top of video. Thanks :)
Hi John, Do you use any special color profiles for atem HDMI when capturing computer screen. When I do this colors on atem look too punchy/contrasty. Any recommendations?
Your videos are so helpful! Thank you for making them. Is it possible to run super source with a chroma image in one camera? I'm using an ATEM Mini Extreme and I use a green screen behind the main speaker's camera. I'd like to show the main speaker, green-screened background (not actually green, but chroma out with a nice background) with super source. Is that possible? You seem to be showing a green-screened background in your demo here, but I didn't know if that was done in the ATEM or in Premiere.
Hi John, thanks for the great videos! We (at our school) have recently purchased a Atem mini Extreme and we were just trying to get the Streamdeck with companion running to put in our Macros but it doesn't want to connect. Did you already try this? Or doe we have to wait for a Companion update? Thanks!
As far as I am aware, the macros should work just fine with the current version of Companion. Perhaps choose "auto-detect" and be sure to triple check the IP address.
With SuperSource on the ATEM Mini Extreme, is it possible to display more than 4 BOXs at the same time? for example 5, 6, 8 boxes at the same time. Thanks
This is awesome, thank you so much, so I looked at your other video where you helped achieved side by side layout with 2 atem minis, but it seems with extreme now it is possible within one device? Did I get it right? I would replace my mini pro to extreme if that's the case as I just bought it.

Check you're using video mode not photo? The 70D has a 30 minute limit for live view photo shooting, but in video mode I didn't think there was a limit, only if you are recording in the camera. Other canon dslr's don't have such a limit, I'm not sure about the 70D as I no longer have that one.
Thanks for your fantastic tutorials - I've just got the ATEM Mini Extreme and enjoying is enormously. Can you help with something I'm struggling with please? I'm looking to wipe or DVE transition linear downstream keyed lower thirds. It seems as though the only options with the extreme are to cut or mix on (via Software Control or a macro). Is there a solution I'm missing? I'm assuming it might be because there isn't a dedicated M/E bank. Thanks in advance.
Interesting, if I understand correctly then this will not be easy to do with the built in transitions. You could use an app like mine (H2R Graphics) and let that wipe your lower third on air instead though: h2r.li/graphics
