You motivated me .i stopped the video and unloaded and folded that load of clothes from the dryer. Put away some mail and then tied the kitchen ! Then came back to your video !
Such good information and advice . Sometimes I think my biggest "why" is wrongly thinking I am going to live forever and I have plenty of time ! I know how silly this is because I think there will always be tomorrow. Then along comes that darn bus, and there goes every thing !! :) I always feel better when I finish tasks . This will help motivate me to get started and do it . Never been a list maker, but I need to start. Thanks for your video kick in the pants :)
I understand Patricia, it's what I think of as 'bookshop panic' ...when I look at all the great books and know I can't possibly read them all 🤦🏼♀️But the way out is to set priorities... in the words of Pablo Picaso "Only put off to tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone" ... which of course means you have to kick to the curb all the stauff that doesnt really matter. You may find you love list making ... the joy is in checking them all off. Thanks so much for watching 🙋🤗
I love the way you can put words to these important things. It makes it easier to see which part that’s failing. Thank you for sharing. I will save the story about the Amish woman. 🙋💕👌
You are so kind Ann ... and you know what I’m like... the videos start where I’m struggling... in my dreams I’m living in a beautiful white airy attic ... sound familiar? You set the standard ❤️🙋🏼😊
I have made quilts for years and was told the story of the Amish humility patch. Now when I see a mistake, I always think it adds character to the quilt :)
As someone who is single, disabled (use crutches and an electric wheelchair), and 72, I am facing the task of moving from one U.S. state to another to be close to family.. That involves packing up my 3-bedroom home by myself (most of my friends are physically unable to help), selling my home, and buying one another in a different state. I have plenty of time but the task is daunting. Thank you for all your videos, especially this one.
Thank you! I especially appreciated your thought about reducing the friction. I do feel that, even after making a list. Sometimes those lists just get too long. So, three items and then go! Going to try that! I found your site recently, and appreciate your thoughtful encouragement. Partly because I am about your age and have been living on my own in my condo for about 20 years. Just to hear how another lady in my similar lifestyle is doing her life is inspiring me to more joy and hope as I move into my mysterious future days.
So happy you’re back and that you enjoyed your time with your family and the people of Zambia. We do take a lot of things for granted in our everyday life, not realizing that everyone may not have what we enjoy. Thank you for sharing that information first. It shows where your heart is focused. Ready to see what’s next. May you have a wonderful rest and be restored to your fabulous self!
Your video has been really helpful and timely. Spring has come to Oregon and my deck is a disaster. I have dead plant in pots, the birds have made a mess around the feeder. It's just a hot mess! I have been dreading cleaning it and as soon as I have my tea and breakfast I'm going to tackle this project. I made a list of all the needed steps. Today is the day. Thanks for the inspiration and the kick in the pants.
How fabulous spring will be for you this year Lori... after the cold cold winter (even if it did come late) the plants will leap out of the ground. And that deck? It sounds like a huge task but with major ‘feel good’ rewards for you when you finish. Even my tiny balcony gets in a mess with all the leaves and dust blowing in... I’ve even bought a small blower because of all the stuff that packed in behind the a/c unit and blocked up it’s drain. So I send you all good vibes for getting that deck fresh and ready for you to enjoy. 🙋🏼😊☀️
This talk was so helpful. Sometimes "perfection ideals" get in the way of getting in there and doing it! step by step. I appreciate that you talk first-hand about it, not as a lecturer. Yes, only God is perfect.
Such wise words from you once again Deidre...The 'Why' word was never something I considered before I retired..I just got on with what needed doing...full time job..house immaculate...Now Procrastination is my middle name...Chores mount up and I sit thinking about what I should be doing...and yet I know the satisfaction I'll have from getting them done..It's KEEPING motivated that's the problem :(
I’m right there with you Barb... so much of my life was spent never thinking ‘why’. There was always ‘the next thing’ Now it’s incredibly freeing to ask why... because it puts what I value first. That’s a confronting moment. Embrace it and let yourself do exactly what YOU want to do. And have some fun... toss the guilt in the rubbish where it belongs and choose YOU. That may include the chores once you know you are doing them because it’s what you want. Good luck and have fun 💃💃💃😊🙋🏼
Needed this today too. I've procrastinated all weekend and today on sorting papers to do my income taxes. I have so much clutter here -- although I've been purging for 2 yrs -- that I feel immobilized. So I do what I often do ... rather than task at hand I went to basement and purged large box of items and a bag of books. Pulled out 3 things I want to sell on craigslist and took photos of 2. Don't know why but making progress on something I've neglected energizes me to do the task I "intended" to do today. I found you a few months ago and haven't watched in a long time. I think I need to again. Although I've gotten rid of a pickup truck load plus much more, I have so much more to do and I feel like I've not made progress fast enough. If anyone came into my home, they wouldn't say, oh she's been decluttering ... they'd say ... she needs a good purge. (Sigh). Sorry to ramble. I enjoy your approach to things!
This is exactly how I feel... (my videos always start with a place I’m struggling... narcissistic behavior model ??) but yes I understand. I feel like getting rid of everything ... again. It’s not that I’ve added much in the last 18 months here but suddenly anything I brought with me that I haven’t used it need to go. My April videos will be all about this #3 stage downsizing/decluttering ... plus a bit of Autumn cleaning. Perhaps you’d like to work along with me. Ps... I envy the pickup. 🚘 😊🙋🏼

Really needed this kick! Forgot...projects can be broken in steps. Genius! Prep for some is what takes more time...caulking, mortar repair, garden spring rake out before planting.... Little steps🚶then run🏃 Have a lovely day! Spring buds, tulips peeking out now🌷🌷 More sun, longer days... Thanks, Deirdre.
Hi Reggie and lovely to 'see' you. It's so good to have those cheerful spring bulbs to confirm that the warmer days are on the way. Oddly I feel a little the same about autumn ... the falling leaves cheer me up because the heat of summer is over... although I'm never happy to lose the light. Don't focus too much on those chores... get out into your garden and turn your face to the sun Bliss 🙋💕🤗
Procrastination (unfortunately) is my friend ..... your video helps debunk some of my preconceived ideas around these issues & gives some great suggestions! I think I need to make list-making my new friend 👆🏻
Love all your videos. Always so helpful and inspiring. Put off organizing my pantry and tomorrow will be the day since off work. Just wanted to ask if you ever made a Pavlova? I have one in the oven now (my first attempt) baking. I loved your Christmas baking videos, could you make a Pavlova? That would be fun to see. I had fun making mine with a few mistakes and hopefully it will be ok. lol
"Common sense, but not common practice." I love that! Yes, I love crossing off tasks. I use the notes on my phone, so that I always have the list with me. Ah, perfection, the enemy of good enough. That is something that many of us struggle with. Very good.
So true Linda, perfection is definitely the enemy of the good! I'm the first to want a good product or outcome but I know that if I try for 'perfect' I'll miss all the chances to learn from the process of 'doing' And Yes! 🤸🏼♀️to a list with lots of tasks crossed off 🏆🤗🙋
The questions i need to ask myself are why do i want to do this and what will happen, could go wrong if I dont do it. Sometimes, I just want to do it to get it out of the way so I dont have to think about it anymore. I have a large project that I just dont have time to tackle at present due to study commitments. After July when study finishes and I complete my diploma I shall have no excuse. At present however, I am happy taking small bites at my larģe project as time permits. This pacifies my OCD tendencies because it is in my planner. Of course we all have huge barriers because they may be attached to emotional baggage. Hence emotions need to be investigated first. My example is my shed. Its sooo full. Tiny, cramped, and out in the weather packed to the roof. Overwhelming, and clearly difficult to physically do it, plus it contains a lot of emotionally charged sentimental items. aaagh. Thanks for the clear advise Deidre. The visualisation technique is new to me. Shall try this. Your keen mind is evident here and your post is apppreciated as always. 🙂
Hi Olwyn... and wow to I completely understand your issue with 'the shed' I really have 'been there done that' and while I appreciate how hard it is take a little comfort from my experience where the emotional ties do lose their hold on you. Come July when you open that door you may find the monster isn't so big after all. Until then focus on your #1 priority and placate those OCD demons with 'one drawer or shelf' when you get 10 mins ... it is surprisingly satisfying. 🙋💕🤗
Hi Deirdre, I'm so happy I found your channel. I have become your fan. I love the way you do things and explained them. I'm a procrastinator indeed, it has been like five years that I have tried to organize my clothing and papers lots of paper. I was a very organized person. Now I don't know even where to start:( love and hugs from a Puerto Rican friend who lives in the ocean state of Rhode Island. A question do you live alone in your beautiful apartment?
Hi Felicia and welcome. Yes I live alone (but rarely lonely) and this beautiful space makes life very comfortable. Be kind to yourself about getting organized again and just set a timer for 15 mins and begin in one box or drawer or cupboard shelf. At the end of 15 mins stop and spend another few minutes dealing with the things you have sorted then congratulate yourself for getting started. 🤗🙋🏼♀️🙏
Hi 👋 great to see you again! And great to have you back 😔, Yes ! On Saturday I felt great 👍 I did all my house 🏡 but today I didn’t move I had a tv day 😢 which I don’t like doing, maybe something to do with two many 🍷 wines last night 😏 😛😳😉 but yes I do just what you said, baby steps 😇😘 x
I’m sure I don’t procrastinate, like Deirdre talked about today, Each evening I write up a list, for what I plan to do next day. I start out with good intentions, the first I whiz thru like a dream, but then I start to falter and sadly run out of steam. My lists are quite impressive, filled with intentions well meant, but then I dither and get sidetracked, my get up and go, got up and went! Next morning I peruse my waiting list, it’s all ready for me to do my worst, but a cup of coffee beckons me, think I’ll watch Deirdre’s video first. 😂 I’m not as bad as this...much....ok maybe sometimes. 😂
To me, I take it down to most sensible, least overwhelming view. Start and stay in one place till finished THEN How do I ‘eat an elephant?’ A Bite At a Time....This video should be dubbed The Perfectly Imperfect Organization Planning Roadmap...;) Thank you for the gentle kick in the pants! That story of the buggy beautiful house. Makes me feel lucky for my current challenge. 😘
So so true... it really is like eating an Elephant. ... but i really didn't think I would turn around at the end and find another had snuck in while I wasn't looking 😂🤗🙋
i get sick of home chores and think retirement should be my time to do what I want. I cant afford house help. My husband has hobbies. I have no time for hobbies. I work all the time. I want to get rid of this energy sucking house my husband thinks everything is fine. It is for him. so some days I get stuck. procrastination or am I just resting?
We are all different, are motivated differently. For me your method involves too much thinking and planning. I can think anything to death! When I've been putting off a big task, it works best for me to just dive in and do SOMETHING to get started. I might be diving into the middle but at least I'm making some kind of progress and my momentum revs up from there.
