I think calling it "I'm glad you're evil too" gives a bit of a misrepresentation. Sure, it could be translated as such, but the term used (warui hito) also just literally means bad person, which can be interpreted a lot differently.
Personally, I see it as just... I'm glad you're also bad at being a normal person. A lot of the lyrics resonate from this sentiment too, as none of the things mentioned are evil, just unconventional or irresponsible. It resonates with our own struggle to adhere to society and our own failures at doing what is expected of us. It finds love and companionship in those imperfections, and gives us a bit of hope for ourselves as well.
That's my own reading of it, at least.

I personally see the "Evil" as just non conforming to society. as you said, none of the things are evil, just unconventional or responsible which can be seen as "evil" to society.

@@osuWhite I mean, official translation doesn't mean it is 1:1 translation, so? For example, the "Nobody Makes Sense" in Japanese is a bit more specific (Bokura wa Minna Imi Fumei/None of Us Make Any Sense) while the translation more seems to carry a sense of separating the speaker character from the others, and What's Inside is technically literally "Do you have [internal] organs?" (Naizou arimasu ka) rather than What's Inside, so.
I do agree warui hito really doesn't convey same level of "evil" in the sense people tend to consider it in English so much as meaning a bad person/someone not so perfect in this case. Shoganai does have a point that you can argue it fits that way too, but yeah.

    • @sharleyNZ
      @sharleyNZ 2 года назад

@Arona Hikari99 I"ll translate "waruihito" simply as "non Mr perfect type person, stay with me without leave me behind and go beyond my reach alone" his lyrics often use simple word but put so much meaning on to it, looks and sounds simple but you could find more deeper meanings if you listen multiple times, fun to listen every time.

Lyrically, he's shifted a lot over the years. He felt really pessimistic in songs like Nice to Meet You Earthling and other things around that time. Meanwhile I love PinocchioP's later stuff, especially Ghosts Play to the Audience, Mei Mei, and of course this. This is maybe my favorite song of all time. It's a simple love song about enjoying other's company and simple pleasures (Mei Mei for what it's worth is also about simple pleasures, but in a way where its like "the world is so beautiful") It also has a perfect ending. But honestly the lyrics, just how realistic and hopeful and /in love/ they are, is just my favorite thing. This song makes me feel so cozy, I love it so much.

    I love PinocchioP.
He was the producer that got me into Vocaloid again. This song was definitely a big reason.
I think what I always really like about his songs is the way they seem to have a similar idea. In my own interpretation at least.
I love how he has a lot of happy sounding songs with cynical lyrics, or some kinda sad sounding songs with hopeful lyrics.
I also think I’m Glad You’re Evil Too is a pretty simple love song. Or, simple in its meaning I guess. It’s the way it describes the simple emotions and memories that makes it complex. In my opinion at least.
I love so many of his songs.
But I’m Glad You’re Evil Too is definitely my favourite of his.

When you first hear this song, it seems so deceptively simple with the lyrics and visuals but grips you strongly with the familiar feeling of sharing love with someone. Then you replay it over and over again and realize there's something you missed the first time with every replay. I also felt like this song was PinocchioP's way of being vulnerable and opening up about something precious, compared to the sense of apathy and sarcasm that most of his other works carried. Looking forward to watching your deep dive video on his other works!

This song has held a special part of my heart ever since I first heard it. I've tried to explain why it's so good before but haven't been able to. It's always such a treat to hear someone put into words something that you haven't been able to. Zero and Yozurina I've seen considered close to this in the "slow-sad" genre, but this song always sticks out more. I think something good to bring up would also be that miku's range in this song is a lot more human, less high-range and more mid-range, I feel like it adds to people's connection with the song, like somebody's just next to them talking.

His growth as a music producer is certainly noticeable,P+ really made me nostalgic lol...But what stayed throughout all these years is that "closeness" you feel when you listen to his music.Even though you didn't write the song yourself you really understand what he's trying to say and the experiences he's trying to convey.Honestly I can name at least 3 instances in my life where I found a Pino song that explained my current life situation/feelings dead on.
Fast tempos and general chaotic vibes just make everything better, but also make songs like I'm glad you're evil too and Last Continue stand out.Hearing Pino sing in the background and more in some songs is always a treat too.

As soon as I heard this song earlier this year, it instantly became one of my top favorite Vocaloid songs. The way that I interpret the title is "I'm glad you're imperfect too." Like you said, I see it as a pretty straight forward love song. Just from the first few lines, it comes from the perspective of someone who has been hurt before, whether from a past relationship or from life in general. But finally, they've found someone just as beaten down and even cynical as they are. While the rest of the world tries to look as good as possible, these two are content with how perfectly imperfect they are together.
It's such a beautiful song, and I wholeheartedly agree with calling it a masterpiece. It's an emotional, audible, and visual experience. It's easy to connect with what's being described, and I think that's part of what helps draw you in at the beginning. It's not a cutesy love song; it's a bit muddled, and a lot of us have been there. But when that first tonal shift happens after the first chorus by adding synth, it kind of makes you wonder where this is going. And it keeps ramping up along with the visuals to deliver this loud, emotional gut punch of an anthem at the end. PinocchioP knew how to pull it off, and that's why this six and a half minute song just works so well.
Thank you for making a video just for this song. I'm looking forward to the next video!

Oh my god, yes! This is my absolute favorite song and I totally agree with everything. I think a big part of what makes this song so amazing is how relatable it is. Not even specifically the love part, since many of us have never had a romantic relationship like that, and the relationship could be possibly seen as platonic anyway. I think it’s the concept of having someone you can let your guard down around and just be 100% yourself, a concept that is pretty much universal. Whether it’s a romantic partner, a family member, or a really close friend, most people have this person whom they’re just super close to who won’t judge them and will often have similar insecurities and imperfections (aka the evil - “im glad you have the same insecurities/imperfections, along with all the other stuff people say that the evil represents). If you listen to Rachie’s cover, you can hear the little bits of casual dialogue she adds in, which make this song even more sincere and further demonstrate my point.
I think this relatableness extends to almost all of PinnochioP’s songs. I know I definitely felt this relatableness in his newest song, Because You’re Here, along with Motivation is Dead and Thanks for being Lifeless (which, in a way, has a similar idea to this one). This relatableness imo is the biggest reason why he is such a popular producer, not to mention his amazing melodies, aesthetic MVs, and sincere-sounding tuning style (seriously, everything he tunes has so much feeling).
Also, the song is just really really sweet and makes you feel loved, as if you’re the character singing it. This song makes me (and probably everyone else who has listened to it and loved it) extremely happy. The melody and structure of the song is totally enchanting imo. It’s so satisfying to hear this song just because of how it sounds. I could probably write a lot more about why this song is so appealing XD
Anyway, thanks for analyzing this song and kind of giving me confirmation that I didn’t love some song that everyone hates lol. I love your content and I look forward to your future videos!

Being used to singing to someone that you love so much but that bitter sweet song turns into a dagger in the heart, a spinning pain that is unforgettable when you sing it by yourself, hating the love that you once held. It hurts so much cause both the good memories and bad ones spin together. Memories of apologizes, the pain of the screams, the warmth of the nigh forgotten embrace, and the sweet whispers now turned more sour and bitter. I cry whenever I hear it, overwhelmed by emotions that I had once forgot I was capable of feeling.

I really want to thank PinocchioP because two of his songs inspired me and motivated me when I was not at my best. I'm not good with words but let me say that I was 'lone kid' of the classroom, it didn't bother me too much but sometimes I couldn't help but think on... let's just say "not good things", I didn't feel belonging to anywhere but his songs sort of cheered me up.
When I first listened to 'All I need are things I like', the first part was basically how I felt during that period so I related myself a lot to the song but then when I reached the end I suddenly felt like I understood something and how much of a selfish prick I was.
Then there was 'I'm glad that you are evil too' that made me feel like I was not alone anymore.
I seriously suck at wording my feelings so just imagine the Vocaloid community as a type of flower and the genre and author are its colour. Some times the flower may be born far away from other flowers of the same type but just knowing that I'm not alone and "unique" makes me feel happy.
And I want to thank this channel too, thank you very much for giving the Vocaloid fans someplace to reunite in this site.

5:33 That long-ass comment is mine, and it surprised me to see it on your video (as has too, the attention it received for some time). So now I'll leave a very long comment here.
I've been working on some scripts for a channel I'm building about Vocaloid and possibly anime (I know both don't have to go together but growing up, I consumed them as crazy and are very important pillars in my life), and it's all been inspired by you by the way! (Not that you'll read my comment, but that is heartwarming to me and I wanted to share it), but I'm really slow at writing and editing. I hit a brick wall so I decided to goof around in YT, I purged some suscriptions and got to your channel, saw this video I haven't had a chance to watch about one of my favorite Vocaloid songs and instantly started watching. I was also thinking about the people that had resonated with that comment. I think for many of us was a very straight forward love song, I was surprised when I read through comments and learned there was people that thought differently, and that's why I decided to just leave how I felt through my life experience written. We have stigmatized for the most part what love songs are, what they may simbolize and how are we supposed to reject them or weird stuff like that. I have internalized that too, and feel awkward if I like someone and I find it hard to be cute or lovey dovey when I get to spend time with a romantic partner. For a song to evoke on me the deepest feelings of love that I hold for a non-existent person was to say the least, unexpected. The lyrics are beautiful, contrasting an internal turnmoil between what may be perceived as good or bad, the acknowledgement of it and the pure desire of being accompanied in life, that to say it in a few words and wrap it up. The music and composition is nice and soothing, rough and tense, it goes through many things its absolutely astonishing and visuals allow to concentrate on each element of the song.
Going in some sort of full circle with this has been amazing, thank you for the video (tbh haven't finished watching haha I paused because I got to excited), for your channel and, well pretty much for everything.
OK SO, edit because the next seconds of the video go to a place where I didn't think it would. Damn with the reference and analogy to How to Dissapear Completely, I always forget to speak about the importance of musicality in the songs that I like and love, thank you for that analysis and deconstruction.

I feel like I got an entirely different vibe from this song my first time listening to it, ngl. the title literally having "evil" in it, along with the dark visuals in the thumbnail made it assume it'd be a creepy song, and to me it kinda was, just not in the way I expected. as the song kept building I was on edge the entire time (it was probably like 3 AM and I'm a wimp when it comes to spooky things, so) waiting for the Wholesome Love Song pretense to finally drop and for the lyrics to take a dark turn... and then they never did. the entire thing was just a sweet love song aside from the eerie video, and the line about the whole being "evil" thing. and I actually found that even creepier than if it *had* taken a dark shift lyrically towards the end. it left me unsure of how to feel and interpret it, and uncertainty is always scarier than anything. needless to say, I did fall in love with it though, and I agree with everything you said here. I just always found it odd when I'd see comments about how it's such a touching and emotional song, when that wasn't my impression of it at all. not saying they're wrong of course, if anything I'm probably the one reading too much into things, but I always found that idea of a "creepy song" with completely innocent lyrics to be one the coolest things about I'm Glad You're Evil Too. but even if it truly is just a simple, heartfelt song about love, it's still 100% a masterpiece.

PinocchioP is honestly one of my favorite artists, to choose one song of his as my favorite would be impossible. But I’m Glad Your Evil Too has been one of my favorites since its release. The way I always saw it is as a simple love song between two people that weren’t considered ‘normal’, who broke what people considered to be standard rules for the sake of living their lives better. It was such a beautiful piece that it sometimes brings me to tears if I’m emotional enough listening to it.
Also I saw Lagtrain and nearly flipped my shit cause Inaba Kumori is such a good artist who deserves more attention

i really REALLY love your channel. it made me remember what i love vocaloids for which is mainly for it being a kind of "self - made music" genre that just happened to blow up because of miku becoming a popular character. i always loved how different producers kept finding different ways to write their songs / their structures / the instruments they used etc while still being in the same "vocaloid genre". thank you so much for this video and i cant wait to see another video on PinocchioP, he's my absolute favourite.

OMG YES I'VE ALWAYS THOUGHT SO! Pinocchio-P has such a unique, almost happy go lucky sound, but the parallels between the melodic structure and lyrics and animation are so well thought out and I just LOVE the crispness of the bass and the audio in general! AND! This song has an amazing build up that feels like someone is slowly but surely opening their heart to someone else, which feels so bittersweet and so lyrical! And that PAUSE JUST BEFORE THE LAST CHORUS IS SO BEAUTIFUL I CANNOT! AND although the chords are so simple, deceptively so, they are so effective especially since they are kind of obstructed by all the textural stuff going on, and they ebb and flow along with the meaning of the lyrics...
I really can't describe how much I love this song and I'm so glad you're covering it in this video :')

Lovely Video! Recently got into Pinocchio-p as well, so it was nice to see this.
The point you made about popular Vocaloid songs lasting around 3-4 minutes really made me realize how true this was. Even in the music industry, there aren't many long or multi-structured songs that became huge with the general audience. The iconic long songs I can mainly think of are Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (~6 mins), Hey Jude by The Beatles (~7 mins) and Jesus of Suburbia by Green Day (~9 mins). But even then these songs are mainly rock influenced. I'd like to think I'm Glad You're Evil Too is kinda like these songs of the Vocaloid community, even I was so impressed and engaged by it on first listen! Really makes you think if any other Vocaloid producer can pull off a longer song.

Kinda late for the party, but whelp, lemme put my two cents in this.
At least for me, this song gives the same vibes as Odds and Ends. I just cried uncontrollably after listening for the first time, second time and so on. It's a song that even it's not your first time, and you expect what's gonna happen, your preparation won't be enough when it actually happens.
At least for me, PinocchioP really set a high standard in many ways even before this song came out (Slow Motion, Common World Domination, etc.) But this song just made you feel that "Damn, how can something this beautiful be real" while still makes it PinocchioP.
The introduction makes you feel related to the Miku, the middle part is more like an "intermission", gives you the idea of "evil" in this song that it actually means someone who is content with their happy life with his/her SO while rejecting "the greater good" that draws by the society, makes you dive deep and imagine along with the lyrics while preparing you for the finale.
The part that everything went silent, the pause is so perfect. And after the Miku simply inhales, starts the finale with the long "Yuu" giving a preparation of the finale, then sings along with the intense instruments going on, that is simply beautiful. Everything has been put into its place correctly. After the music ends, you realize the happiness this song gives you. Pretty similar to Odds and Ends in a sense that it helps me cope with negative thoughts, even if it's only for a while.
PinocchioP's voice tuning is also what make this a masterpiece. In every section, the voice's mood is different, and that makes us even more related to the song.
This is just too good. PinocchioP just did it again.
Ps. For the similar song composition (it's not Vocaloid, but I feel that it gives the similar vibes), I would recommend Sea of voices by Porter Robinson (ruclips.net/video/lSooYPG-5Rg/видео.html)
Pss. and yes, after "Because you are here" PinocchioP just did it again.

I'm Glad You're Evil Too almost makes me cry everytime... I love their other songs as well, a lot, they are full of weird energy and pretty deep messages, and some are just, well, fun!!
I knew the songs having to be 3 minutes was because of the radio + peoples attention spans, that's also why Queen was praised for taking the risk of making Bohemian Rapsody, which was way longer than people liked at the time.

I appreciate you taking your time to examine this song...From what I understand, your argument is that, because of how drastically different this song is in terms of song structure, song length, and theme along with how this song takes a huge risk, this song is a masterpiece.
I'm going to tell you right now: with all due respect, but...we honestly need to take a completely different approach as to how understand this song. By examining what can be perceived on the surface, we completely miss the point of what this song is. We need to understand what this song wants us to imagine.
This song just helps you imagine that, despite you and your romantic interest being so human with your ups and down, you appreciate each other in the end for who you and your significant other are. It's the passion of the relationship that drives you to push through the pain of a romantic relationship and the pain of being a human. The thing about this song is that it doesn't quite make sense on it's own. Sure, at the surface, it's a nice little walk in the park with Miku. But if we just leave at that, it just feels so incomplete. Surely, there's more to this song? right? To truly understand this song, however, we have to dive deeper. We have to take a step back and take a look at things at a grander picture. Examining this song alone may not really make much sense. It almost becomes too pointless to just zero in on a song like this for too long. For this song to truly make sense, we would need to take the time and listen to the entirety of HUMAN. What we need to realize is that this song is actually a part of a concept album. not only do we need to understand that, but we also need to realize what this concept is. Only by understanding these two things will we see the true beauty of this song.
IMO, The ENTIRE album of HUMAN is a masterpiece. I would even go as far as to saying that it is the TPAB of Vocaloid. It is the existential and apathetic journey of trying to answer the timeless question: what is a human? 人間ってなんだ?Every song on the album tries to explain the different aspects of what makes up a human, and this song in particular is a part of that concept. In short, this song is simply a piece of a big picture.

    • @bejoba3519
      @bejoba3519 4 года назад

      So...
I also would like to add something to what I've said.
What you've said and explained in the video isn't entirely in vain. But rather... It only proves that ピノキオピー was willing to compromise accessibility for being able to accomplish what he wanted to do. He had an artistic intent, and he compromised accessibility for what he wanted to do. If that makes sense.

Bejoba comments like yours are the reason why I try to read every comment on my videos. Can't believe this doesn't have any likes yet, should be top comment in my book. First of all, there's definitively no one right way to examine art. My analysis of what makes this a masterpiece and what you see makes this a masterpiece can both be right or can both wrong. It's merely just the opinions of critics.
I wanna say I fully agree with your statements about seeing this as one piece of a larger picture. You make such a great point about comparing this song to the rest of the album that it came off of. Man that never even came to my mind admittedly, I also liked the way you compared TPAB to human as well. But i'm not sure if I entirely agree that this song NEEDS to be compared to Human. I mean look at "the blacker the berry" for example, sure it has a place within TPAB. I mean it falls right after complexion, a song that talks about ignoring racial complexions in order to bring unity. So when that song comes on afterwards the sting of the message only hurts even more. But to be honest, when you look at people talk about that song do they even mention TPAB? From what I've read, not really, instead they typically praise the song for it's statements about police brutality and racism. The way the last verse of the line completely flips the message. Or the powerful instrumental and passion in his delivery. What I'm trying to say is you don't necessarily need to examine the album the song came off of in order to understand what it's about or Pinocchiop probably wouldn't have even released this as a single.

@@ubnubmaster Ubnub my good sir it is good to hear from you again. Hope you've been doing well. It's just exciting for me to be able to discuss about Vocaloid music on a serious level.
Also, I'm sorry if i sounded a bit rude on interpretation. Because of how our words and thoughts are filtered by our perspectives, it's impossible to be able to have a completely accurate way of interpreting art. it's meant to be intangible in a way so we can develop our own perspective on things.
It doesn't help being an aspie.
To add onto your argument with The Blacker The Berry, I believe that songs like that and 君も悪い人で良かった play an interesting role. They may provide contrast to the other songs before it and help us see the other side of the coin (or so to speak) to a presented perspective.
