I WOULD LIKE TO CLARIFY!!! Encanto was a decent movie yes. And so was others I mentioned. I was just saying IN COMPARISON. To the classics they just dont hold a candle. Plus 2D animation is KING. On top of that. They all suffer from the same animation AND generic storylines. Not really saying they are bad. Just saying they are great. :)
I honestly think you are blinded by nostalgia for the classics. I really enjoyed some of the new disney releases especially ones that didn’t get much marketing, like Strange World and Turning Red to the point where I wish I saw them as kids.
There is a lot better elements, or more enjoyable elements in the older movies Disney produced that still hold up to this day. I didn't have a problem with Turning Red (like most political commenators do) but I thought the delivery, and chatracters were insuffurable and annoying to the point where I didn't enjoy it at all (yes I know they're pre-teens). Also Disney hasn't been able to try something new from their usual movies or pay respects to the olders, so I don't think BionicPig is blinded by nostalgia because there is a lot to critisize. But different people enjoy different things so all the power to you :)@@emmamargaret9297
Animator here! They actually planned to make a movie about the origin of the song (when you wish upon a star), but higher ups chopped it up into unrecognizable pieces. Also, the art style is meant to “simulate” watercolor, and they refused to do actual 2D animation because there was a “skill issue” amongst their staff 🤦 🙄 they put way too much stock into cgi and now have barely any 2D animators anymore
Woooww that explains why every single movie from them now is CGI. After all, why bother making something of quality if they can make millions with zero effort whatsoever?
Probably because animators-in-training nowadays aren’t given the time or space to train their 2D animation skills beyond the basics. Even tho many students really want to learn 2D, schools don’t offer as many courses in that discipline because 3D has become standard. and they probably don’t have time to teach themselves 2D while working on their degrees
From what I heard, there was a whole ton of corporate meddling behind the scenes. It got to the point where Disney animators and screenwriters said that the movie is nothing more than an empty shell of what it once was.
In Netflix's 'Klaus' they made a spectacular job with the animation (great story too). They pushed the limitations of traditional animation. The creators decided to make the film in 2D, but they also wanted to advance the look, so they developed a new software that adds details like lighting and texture to the characters that make them appear 3D. This style would have been perfect for 'Wish', but Disney is not a pioneer anymore, and even a better animation could not save this garbage.
The irony in Klaus being more innovative than modern Disney movies is that the movie was written and directed by a former Disney concept artist. Sergio Pablos worked on some of Disney’s Renaissance Era and early 2000s films (Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Tarzan, and Treasure Planet.) I love Klaus and I hope we see many more 2D movies from SPA Studios.
There is a tik tok from an animator (and former Disney animator) that said Disney physically can’t make 2D anymore because they don’t have any of the tech or the know how anymore.
@@wil.d_sageso I’m not saying I don’t believe you, but… if they REALLY cared enough, they totally COULD do a 2D animated movie! If other studios could do it (hell, even Don Bluth is teaching future animators), they very well could too! But hey, it seems like Disney cares more about money than the craft of [hand-drawn] animation at this point 😕
What’s disappointing asf to me is cause the CONCEPT-ART & the concept-draft for the overall story from the art-book was literally way more interesting then this. We COULD’VE gotten a emotional story with Aisha & a star-dude along with the queen & king being the main villains!! Like i just wanna know what happened for all the concept-art to be thrown away in favor of THIS.. 😭💀
Disney just hates love and relationships apparently, so it wasn’t happening unfortunately. This is such a nothing movie. At least the Bee movie and chicken little have ironic value, but Wish made me wish I felt something while watching it.
Disney just oozes corporate middle management meddling now, mostly out of fear, ever since the bottom fell off of their acquisition cash cows because they squandered their potential. OG story probably tested bad or some shit, in no way does a film that look like this cost $200 million dollars without last minute large changes in story and render time. Typical romance wasn't progressive enough. A woman can't be evil unless seriously misunderstood. Do these things matter in terms of the story, of the art? Yes. But some higher up was probably just like, nah, make it work without them. Management is hired to push product, only sees people as numbers, and to make something as mass-marketing appeal as possible means a safe investment with highest returns, because everyone is included and possibly problematic elements are removed. But in trying to appeal to everyone, you appeal to no one. Imagine how beautiful the original story would have been if Disney had used their own animation technology, Deep Canvas and Meander, to seamlessly blend hand-drawn 2D and 3D together into an incredible self-referential love letter, with the romance core of the film being the way they communicate that love between dreams and people. Genius concept. This generic trash we got is so beyond disappointing.
I will never forget the fact that Wish cost more than both Spider-verse movies together and this is what we got....like I fully support Sony paying more to their people (because by god do they deserve it) but the comparison right now is honestly hilarious Almost forgot the fact that this got nominated over TMNT and Nimona is insulting
Fuckin’ award shows, man.. there’s always gotta be that one corporate nomination even if most people hate it. Disney is to the Oscars what DJ Khalid is to the Grammys.
I’m not even upset it’s a mediocre Disney movie; I expect that at this point. I’m upset because THIS was their hundred year celebration piece. THIS! This generic, corporate trash that couldn’t even hope to reach the heights of the Disney Renaissance or its inception. This isn’t even Walt rolling his his grave; it’s Bobby boy digging up Walt’s corpse, parading it through the street, yelling about how great Disney is, and throwing the body in the dumpster after he’s done while he pats himself on the back…and Walt rolling inside the dumpster.
This movie was supposed to be Disney's one final chance to redeem themselves, and they fucking failed miserably. I was extremely skeptical about the movie, while everyone else was hyped to see the movie itself, and it turns out... I WAS RIGHT TO BE SKEPTICAL ALL ALONG! *THIS MOVIE IS ABSOLUTE SHIT!!!* We have learned the hard way this year to NEVER expect anything good from Disney, because what that shows me and the rest of us on this pathetic planet is that Disney is a capitalistic parasite that vacuums up our own hard-earned money for their own selfish gain, in an attempt to become America's largest monopoly and the largest corporate empire in the entire world. All the magic they once had? They traded that magic in favor of profit, profit, profit. Never again will I wish upon a star, and neither should the rest of humanity. Those dreams have long since died the moment they ruined what our forefathers have once stood for. They complete shat on the legacy of all animators in this nation. And I will never forgive or forget any of this! I hope to never again be fooled by the childish hopes that once blinded me when I was younger.
That’s like what Marvel Comics did for Captain America’s 80th anniversary. They touted this miniseries called The United States of Captain America which was supposed to be a great tribute to Cap and everyone who had wielded the shield…and then they botched it royally. Not only was the story a lackluster, mopey mess that was supposed to be inspiring, but failed, but it focused more on brand new characters. See, they introduced all these cosplayers- I mean, vigilantes- who readers were supposed to elevate to a level similar to a hero who had battled evil and injustice for literal decades. There’s nothing wrong with having new characters and giving them focus in a story, but constantly thrusting new characters into the spotlight instead of the established characters when the series has been touted as honoring those established characters? No. There’s also the matter of how the writers and promoters expected us to view these newcomers. They weren’t quite supposed to be at Captain America’s level (because they were inspired by him, which actually is a nice message and tribute), but they were supposed to be viewed as near his level, even being given nicknames like “The Captain America of the Rails” or “The Captain America of Harrisburg”. Let me tell you something. On paper, the theme of “This character was inspired by a hero and became a hero” is good. In reality, however, you can’t just have a character assemble a sloppy costume and then have them go out & tackle seasoned criminals and villains. One of the characters, no lie, wielded a trash can lid as a shield. Does that sound like a character that should be elevated to the same level as The Falcon or The Winter Soldier? Someone with no experience or training is going to get badly injured or killed out in the field. In fact, there was a famous story in which an eager and skilled young man named Roscoe tried to fill in for Captain America and ended up being killed by The Red Skull his first night. I get the message of “Anyone can be a hero if their heart is in the right place!” but noble ideals and a thrown-together outfit simply aren’t enough.
I’ll bet they waited till the last damn minute to make this movie!!! A Century celebration that the entire planet was looking forward too and they destroyed what could’ve been a massive monument to Disney 2D animation for this.
When Asha first meets Magnifico I thought, "Huh, an actual nuanced conflict?" Because both of them have a point. A king can't give _everyone_ what they want, because a lot of people don't think about the consequences. At the same time, robbing them of the opportunity to chase those dreams isn't a good solution. I thought the movie would have an escalating conflict between two principled characters who by the end would realize their flaws and learn to work together. After all, both want what's best for their kingdom. But no, immediately both of them veer off the tracks of their motivation, and the resolution feels hollow as a result. So disappointing.
Now you see, that would've required actual thought and good story telling. And spoiler alert! Disney is severely lacking in both. They seem to think those things are racist/sexist/misogynist/gynecologist.
Also thought about that, that then she would be the kingdom's heir and be trained in magic. Besides, Disney then would be able to market Asha as a new princess in their line.
From the trailers I honestly thought thats where they were going, but no just some odd 1 off of her being an apprentice or some shit to very half hazardly have him reveal the main driving force for the plot
IMO she should have either been his blood daughter or adopted one, Asha being forced to defy her own father, and amaya would have a good reason to chose her over magnifico. It also would make Asha less selfish, because in the movie, she get pissed off about not getting a wish despite just having been recruited, which not only show how she doesn't care for how important her position is, but that d he doesn't intend to work at all for it and is entitled as fuck.
This is sort of a Frozen situation, when you look at the history in the making of Frozen they originally were gonna have Elsa be a villain until they made Let It Go. From what I hear, Magnifico was supposed to have a wife and they’d be the first evil couple in Disney history. And also that the Star would turn out into a handsome guy with magical powers of shapeshifting. The kind of concepts that were better than the final results
I'm 90% convinced Cassandra from the Tangled series borrowed Frozen's scrapped ideas (not something that has been confirmed or even rumoured, just a hunch)
@@TheYoungGeninSasuke Frozen is mediocre; making Elsa villain would have made it better, because a) it's understandable that Elsa would be angry and bitter about being made to feel like a monster, and b) Idina Menzel would have made a deliciously hammy villain.
Yeah it had the cute call back to the "wishing on a star" song and I liked the message that you can have hope but that you actually have to work for your dreams to come true 😊
The original concepts were so cool too and we were left with this. We could have like the first dark villain couple, a cool star boy that was mute and a love intrest. The idea of wishing on a star would fit the disney magic theme if they just actually did it good. Compared to any of the movies that have come out this year, this one has to be the one that dropped the weakest ball the furthest.
Not to mention a potential love of Asha's life, the star boy, would be the greatest wish Asha could have, I mean wouldn't any of you want to be deeply in love with someone to spend the rest of your life with? Maybe not all, but I can't be the only one.
@@SoelSofiaEloise Forever mourning the possibility of her being with a silly star god 😭 it would've been so cool. And would be such good rep if they kept him being mute in too
"I let you live here for free, and I don't even charge you rent." They seriously couldn't think of better lyrics for their villain song?! Also, Chris Pine was the best part of the movie, he should really be in more musicals.
@@obi_omahe started in Into The Woods, a film adaptation of a stage musical, as one of the “Prince Charming” characters. He’s hilarious - and talented - in that movie!! I recommend it for some singing, melodramatic Chris Pine.

I swear, these days I'm mainly excited for Disney movies just because of how it looks, not because of the story. It's kind of heart-breaking... I mean, one of my favourite Disney movies is Coco because of how much heart and soul is in it! But these days it's too much of an excuse to make money instead of a good story.
I was including Pixar since Disney is usually the one releasing them, so the criticism falls to them too. Though I also unintentionally just proved my point by getting them mixed up oops@@Sleepiest_OwO
Asha feels more like a villain than King Magnifico. He was never revealed to be some selfish asshole for a while, while Asha says she cares about the kingdom and wants everyones wishes to come true. She is quite literally going against "Careful what you wish for". But nah they just forced HIM to be a villain.
They should've made Asha a twist villain, or at least anti-villain. I know it's overdone, but having that for the protagonist would make things better.
@@Selfdestructingwii OR, having Asha go through the journey of trying to do things "right" then realizing Magnifico WAS right all along and she didn't know what she was doing. It's similar to the old "Sorceror's apprentice" film. You have a neophyte trying to wield great power, and realizing he has no idea how to control it.... Fun fact: we know that one was a hero because... it was Mickey. It's also why in Kingdom Hearts Mickey is a magic user.
you know when people show off test footage of a cgi animated movie in the behind-the-scenes sections of dvds and the announcer is like "here we see the development shots of what the movie will look like"? yeah thats this entire movie
I think the villain would have been more intimidating if he could control the wishes, like alter what people want so that it suits him. Say he wants them to attack the main character, and the whole town becomes against her because they're basically possessed.
I actually really loved Onward. It was a fantastic film about grief and family, it was honestly really sweet and the ending was perfect. I never saw Luca but a lot of people say it's good too!
About the Magnifico spilling his guts to Asha about the wishes- thing: Why not have him reveal the secret to her, and when she reacts how she does in the film, he just goes "Oh... I was hoping you wouldn't react like all the others." Then he snaps his fingers, she falls through a trap door that has a portal at the bottom, said portal transports her far from the kingdom and in the middle of a forrest. Asha then has to make her way back to the kingdom. Night falls she wishes on a star, said star becomes the Star Boy from the og concept art and he wants to help her. "All the others," btw refers to the other interviewees before Asha that reacted like her. Maybe Asha & Star Boy pick them up on their journey home. Maybe it's difficult getting into the kingdom cuz of a magical barrier so all the would-be apprentices have to use their combined magic to break through? Idk man I'm just spitballing here.
When I read the line "Well....I was hoping you wouldn't react like all the others...." I felt more threatened from that line than anything Magnifico did in the movie 😂😂😂😂 This line is perfect and menacing coming from a villain because it basically communicates to us the audience that this main character we're following is not going to be given any shortcuts and is mortal like the rest of us
Honestly that sounds like a good movie. And maybe "the others" in question could be Asha's friend group from the movie. Only here since we're meeting them 1-2 at a time they each have some screen time to develop a defining character trait and have some fun interactions with the main group.
Imagine if they actually had more drastic consequences for having their wishes crushed. Maybe something akin to depression? Maybe make her grandpa suffer from such an issue as a motivation for her to seek the king’s favour? Or for the wishes to be granted, other wishes must be crushed in turn to fuel the granting? Honestly a part of me wants to try writing my own version but I’m not sure if Asha will even remain Asha if I do, or if it will even turn out decent.
I think that the story could have been better if the main character succeeded in getting everyone’s wishes granted and chases out the king. But things start to go wrong, because many of the wishes either had bad consequences or were straight up harmful. The hero then has to find the king, and the two un-make the wishes. He then makes her an apprentice and they live happily ever after and whatever.
He learns he can't keep wishes away from everyone and she learns she can't grant every wish because they're not all good for everyone. They come to a compromise which would be very mature and a good lesson for children. But nope.
Fantasia 100 - a selection of music matched up with all new animations based on the entire history of Disney, taking the audience through a long selection of Disney scenes and characters with them even blending together and having characters from different films interact. Absolutely no politics, just a celebration of music and art.
@@LeeONardo The problem I think now is that Disney has garnered an audience of family, children movies now. While adult and possibly teens would appreciate Fantasia, most children would probably get bored, and I don't know if they could draw that audience back in quick enough to give Fantasia a chance. Fantasia 2000 also didn't do great when it was released either and with their audience for a movie like that smaller than ever, I can't imagine that would have done that great in terms of making money. Disney no longer cares about the art, they just want the money.
I wish Nimona, Suzume or Boy & The Heron could have gotten an Award, instead of Wish... Nimona went with the cellshaded look too, and probably was going to be more detailed with it, if it wasn't for the shut down of Blue Sky, but, nevertheless, Annapurna still made it look good for what they acquired.
@@MillyKKitty Yeah, was just speaking for myself. To be fair, I'm not a fan of Gibli films in general, I haven't liked any of them I've seen. Doesn't make them bad, just not for me.
So you’re telling me that Nimona, a cute movie with an adorable love trope and a great lesson, didn’t get an award but Wish, aka the ChatGPT MEGAFLOP with horrible songwriting, did? Jeez. I get that Disney is a huge company, but quality over quantity (and Wish didn’t even make that much at the box office 💀 yet another reason to choose Nimona 🤦🏼♀️) (I’m only comparing the movies you mentioned that I watched; I have not seen Suzume or Boy and The Heron yet) That being said, I do need to watch Suzume it has been on my watchlist for quite some time! :) Where can I watch Suzume and Boy and the Heron?
It seems like the writers were switched out halfway through the movie cause Magnificos personality does a dramatic shift from being tragic and sympathetic to suddenly being a power-hungry villain with no redeeming qualities. Like the writers forgot what kind of villain they were writing and tried shoehorning in a purely evil villain
That’s kind of crazy. Imagine leaving the theater so disappointed, that you believe that the only possible way the film could’ve turned out like this was due to AI writing it.
princess and the frog already was a take on 'wish upon a star'. Tatiana worked hard because she knew that just 'wishing' something would happen wouldnt make it happen. Was a pretty good message about working toward your dreams but still enjoying the journey to get there and not burning out.
I was hoping instead of a "he didn't get his wish" it was a "he did get his wish but it went horribly wrong". And like the idea that everyone's wish being granted would be bad made me think of Bruce Almighty and how he granted everyone's wish and it became anarchy. And like you had hundreds of people all winning the lottery, so it ended up being like a tiny prize. And like the dad wanting to be a musician, but we don't see him ever really actually doing anything to be one. So it could have people putting in zero effort into things as they rely on wishes to make things happen. But then since they didn't actually learn it, they can't teach anyone else so skills disappear unless they're specifically wished for. I don't know. I feel like it would have been an interesting angle to go with it. Like that line from R&H's Cinderella, "the trouble with most people is they sit around wishing for something to happen instead of just doing something about it."
A villain couple would have been EPIC. Isnt that what Disney fans have been drawing & writing since the 90s? This was a prime opportunity to “WOW” on their centennial; and they dropped every single ball. So many amazing Disney fans I know have written better fanfiction than whatever this movie was. Theres so much passion, whimsy, heart, and dedication that Disney inspires in creators & consumers alike; it’s heartbreaking (and dare I say disrespectful) when the company itself can’t care (and love) its creations the way we do…
What could’ve made this movie better is if they kept the concept of the star being a shapeshifter giving us a Star Boy and kept the Queen as being evil as well giving us an evil couple
Could you provide a source? I looked it up but can't find anything about Loki's intro being written by AI. I saw a debunked claim about some Loki promo art using AI, and the show 'Secret Invasion' being AI written, but that was all.
@@dragonrider7101 Sorry I meant Secret Invasion intro. Disney has not really debunked statements that they haven't used AI for Loki due to them getting a lot of backlash from them using AI in Secret Invasion but if we put two and two together if they're so willing to use AI in one show what is stopping them from using AI in another show. This is the same Disney we're talking about that would willingly use AI and its technology during a writers strike. Just think about that for a second you're fighting for fair pay and rights at your job and then your company just said "hey fuck you we can use technology to replace you". This is also the same Disney in 1940s when several major animators went on strike felt no sympathy for them.
@@JamSome I agree. AI can be fun to play around with just for fun, but using AI to take creative work away from people is wrong, and Disney would definitelypull that crap. I just like having sources on things cause misinformation is big bad doodoo.
Kinda funny how the show is named Loki, yet he’s shoved to the side by his girl version of him, who’s also his love interest. Honestly, I just don’t see Loki as someone who’s interested in romance, I just see him as a mischievous god who just takes sides based on which one suits his interest. That’s what the show should’ve been about. (Sorry for the Loki rant. Tom Hiddleston deserved better)

@@t1mburt0nsdandruff Have you seen Season 2? Sylvie barely shows up and they completely forget she was supposed to be a love interest. I actually liked her character in Season 1, so for me it was a disappointing development, but maybe you'll like it.
The Princess and the Frog, Disney's last 2D animated princess movie from 2009, handled the wishing upon a star theme better than Disney's Grand 100 film... It's just sad
Last I heard, they were planning on doing their own distinct 3D characters on 2D settings But then they found out that was actually really hard, and Disney isn't a huge fan of risks
Its sad this is what Disney is now, especially compared to the movies that came before that are classic. But, at the same time it makes sense, this movie represents Modern Disney all too well.
Speaking of which, Charlie (Penguinz0) also pointed out an interesting fan theory that the kingdom are us fans and the king is Disney themselves refusing to give our wishes. It’s allegories like this that kind of make me appreciate some bad media.
Disney should make Asha's wish granted by King Magnifico originally, then she slowly finds out the true nature of the wish system(placed by the king), and her wish screws up everything she's trying to fix in the movie(and makes the situation messier). Just so the quote "Be careful what you wish for" will actually make sense. And the relevance for star in the movie could increase since its probably Asha's last resort to fixing the main problem in the movie plot
in my opinion Encanto was the last piece of media Disney released that felt like it had soul, it felt like it was trying to do too much at times but it was charming, fun, had good songs, a good message and likeable characters, I personally really love it but I can understand why some think It's generic because the story is pretty straightforward
For the animation i feel like at first the people were like "yeah lets make something stylized for this" but Disney kept doing disney to them and they decided it was not at all worth the pay or effort to try for a movie that they could feel disney squeeze any heart out of. Like with the main villain feeling like at forst they wanted to write him to have acual motivation but then nvm. That part though does make me feel like they had an ai as one of the writers and it just went from giving the motive to making him evil
I really think they did use AI for this movie. 😂 I asked ChatGPT: "Please come up with a disney style movie plot surrounding a wishing star and the film revolves around granting wishes. The villain is a sorcerer and can also grant wishes." That's the plot that I gathered from this film. ChatGPT replies: "In the kingdom of Lumina, nestled under a sparkling night sky, a fabled wishing star named Stella radiates with the power to grant wishes. The kingdom's peace relies on the harmony between Stella's wishes and the guidance of the Guardian of Dreams, an ancient sorceress who ensures the wishes are granted responsibly. Enter Luna, an adventurous young dreamer who stumbles upon Stella's existence. Luna's heartfelt wish for adventure accidentally awakens a dormant power within Stella, causing an imbalance in wish-granting magic. Sensing the disturbance, the conniving sorcerer Zephyr, once banished for abusing magic, returns, wielding his dark magic that allows him to grant wishes but at a dangerous cost. As wishes begin to go awry, the kingdom falls into chaos. Luna, driven by her desire to fix her mistake, teams up with Sky, a skilled but skeptical guardian-in-training. Together, they embark on a quest to restore balance to Stella's magic before Zephyr harnesses its power for his nefarious desires. Their journey takes them through enchanted forests, across perilous mountains, and into the heart of ancient ruins, where they encounter colorful characters like a mischievous wish-granting pixie and a talking celestial dragon who guides them. Throughout their adventure, Luna learns the true responsibility of making wishes, discovering that the most important desires come from within. Sky, initially reluctant to trust in the power of wishes, learns to embrace the magic when he sees its genuine impact on people's lives. As the final showdown approaches, Luna and Sky confront Zephyr in a breathtaking battle of magic and willpower. Through determination and selflessness, Luna taps into the purest form of Stella's magic, countering Zephyr's dark wishes and restoring harmony to Lumina. In the end, Luna becomes the new Guardian of Dreams, entrusted with ensuring the balance of wish-granting magic. With a newfound understanding of the power of wishes, Luna helps the kingdom fulfill its dreams, teaching everyone the importance of using wishes wisely and from the heart. And amidst the starry night, Lumina thrives once more, embracing the magic of Stella's wishes in harmony and joy." Disney made a few adjustments but this is the same plot LOL
Considering the credited author did Frozen 2 as well, which was honestly also terrible, there might be no AI involved. They might just suck. Which I'm not sure is better or worse.
@@mr.x2567That statement was really uncalled for. These are just movies. If humanity is doing anything wrong, look at the problems going on in the real world right now and maybe look into ways to help ie: volunteering, protesting, mutual aid, etc!
Honestly I would've been fine with King Magnifico having a superficial "big bad guy'' reason for being the villain! We don't always need a bad guy to have trauma or a tragic backstory. The classic Disney movies have shown us this! I think I would've preferred that over anything honestly. It's fine to use the Disney classic tropes, especially in the 100th anniversary movie?? I want over-the-top villains again, I want them to be unashamedly bad. It's fun that way! But they do need some kind of motive that is present throughout the film. King Magnifico is shown too much as a good king, a king just doing what's right for the kingdom, only to then have the quickest switch up that was barely explored because of evil book. There is nothing there. Just blandness, which is truly a shame. There could've been something great if they just stuck to the original concepts.
The king seemed to me from the trailers to really be a very interesting villain. but after it released, and I saw some clips, I honestly thought he really lacked the presence that he needed to "pop" as it were.
About the animators' time constraints, I heard rumours that the movie was animated in 4 months, which is absolutely insane. I mean sure, not everyone is like Miyazaki taking months to animate a scene, but 4 months for a whole movie, as important as a 100th anniversary no less, is just madness
I agree that the villain wasn’t very great, but your complaints about his motivation and what could have worked was explained in the movie’s opening narration. It was pretty much exactly what you were suggesting would have been a good background: His home and family was destroyed by evil robbers or something and he escaped to the island, learns magic and becomes a sorcerer, establishes the kingdom and takes it upon himself to protect people’s wishes with his magic so that his people don’t suffer like he did.
As a non writer an idea I came up with on the spot for why the king doesn't grant the wishes is because otherwise everyone would become spoilt and in a kingdom where anyone can do/be/have whatever they whenever they want nothing has meaning (when everyone is special nobody is special type of thing).
In my opinion, Luca was the closest we got to a "classic" Disney film this year. It was able to use both childlike wonder and naivete alongside deep, emotional, and distressing beats to craft an engaging plotline. There was a villain who was a villain from the moment he's introduced because he's just an asshole and not because of some "twist" that endears us toward him. There was a "happily ever after" goal. There was even a reference to a strained/distant parental relationship, which is pretty in line with every Disney character either having a dead mom or completely unseen and unmentioned [though never implied to be dead, making for seemingly absent] parents. It comes down to things as small as the fact that the visuals were vibrant, which seems to be missing from recent Disney films. Meanwhile, Wish gives the same energy as those cheap Disney-wannabe movies made in the 2000s & 2010s. The ones with Barbie level graphics quality.
I love that you talked about the backgrounds because that's what I noticed just in the trailers. The backgrounds look like movie sets, cheap movie sets. They aren't dynamic, they don't move, it looks hollow and flat at the same time.
The style of this movie reminds me of “Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the lost demon” that game also have like the watercolor palette with the thick outlines, but in comparative, Bayonetta it’s really appealing to the eye by playing with more saturated colors and some cell shading techniques on the characters, they looked well mixed with the world, but this movie… it’s just the really basic concept of that, from a big animation house… Disney really fell off
Wish is like one of pictures that make sense if you only glance it, but if you actually stop to look, then it makes less and less sense the more you look at it.
Encanto is an awesome movie, it's one of my favorite modern Disney movies. Encanto replaced Moana for me. Which is my other favorite modern Disney movie.
All their marketing seemed to be "LOOK! THE MAIN CHARACTER IS BLACK!" And I knew nothing else about it. I guess that's why... They didn't need a story , they needed a black character. Like Tiana never existed
"LOOK! MAIN CHARACTER IS BLACK AND OR ASIAN!" "LOOK! WHITE MAN BAD! WHITE WOMAN STUPID! MAN OF COLOR GOOD! WOMAN OF COLOR STRONG!" "LOOK! SOMEONE IS LGBTQ+" "**LOOK! QUIRKY!! MILLENNIAL HUMOR!**" that's basically what almost all movies have been. It's not diversity or presentation anymore, it's just...really bad marketing and even objectifying at times.
I can’t believe the same company that made The Black Cauldron, Fantasia, Treasure Planet, etc. made…this. It’s not bad, just isn’t as great as people had hoped
I feel like this movie had potential to be deep. Like, what if the king didn't grant wishes to people who wouldn't be able to maintain the wish? Example: If a guy wishes to be a great musician. But the king can see he's not actually passionate about music and just wants it for attention. A wish like that would be more useful to someone who actually puts a lot of effort and passionate into music. Which is a good lesson for kids. You can't just "wish" for a skill, you need to actually put effort into developing it.
I don't think there's a problem with Magnifico having no tragic backstory and him just being "evil for being evil". Just cause they have no generational trauma or something, pure evils can be extremely entertaining characters. Think of villains such as Big Jack Horner, Ursula, Maleficent (before the reboot) etc. I think the main issue with Magnifico was not that he was "just evil", rather he had no purpose with being evil. Scar from Lion King was pure evil, but he also had a goal of becoming the new king of the pridelands instead of spending his life in Mufasa and Simba's shadow. Usula was pure evil, but she had a goal of dethroning Triton and ruling over the seas instead of being banished into a small cave on rock bottom. Magnifico was evil, but... like, he was already a king. What did he want to use his big evil green powers for? What is his goal? He kinda reminds me of Megamind who took over a city with all his evil intentions, and then had absolutely 0 idea what to do with it. But unlike Megamind's story, which was basically a redemption/finding yourself arc, Magnifico was written to be just a villain.
I’m still of the opinion that, in spite of Disney and Pixar’s misses leading up to the 2020’s, they still made some good movies. Encanto was fantastic, Soul was moving, and Luca and Turning Red were cute and enjoyable. I think that even if parts of these movies were starting to become exhausted, they still brought something unique to the table. From what I’m hearing about Wish, it does not sound very unique, even though the premise and the North African/southwest European setting had much to offer. but on account of Disney’s recent donation to the IOF, im not too keen on spending money to confirm those assessments
Haven't seen Wish yet but from what I hear it seem like Adam Sandler beat Disney at it's own game, which is just the wildest thing to me and something I never thought I would get to experience 😂
The two couple dinamic was so perfect. Imagine the villain losing her lover and so Asha at the end it would be so tragic and like both sharing the same hurtfull feeling and then showing the difference between the villain and the hero, she would keep going and he would get more evil
You can look at the film, the concept art, and even the music to see the potential is there, but it just never lives up to what it could be. It's a falling star instead of a wishing star.
You wanna know how to fix this movie? Simple: - make the star a shappeshifter boy and Asha's love interest (like it was in the concep art that they threw away), I know some people dont like it but Disney became what they are by writing romances in their stories; - make the goat shut up and give him a decent dynamic with Asha, they barely interact as friends in the movie; - make the king AND queen the villains (again, like in the concept art) so we can have our first disney evil couple, with an evil bombastic and dramatic duet; - Asha's already Magnifico apprentice at the start of the movie, so they already have a bond and this bond can be shaken when she learns the truth. This way the king would also feel betrayed by her; - Better yet make Asha's late father and Magnifico best friends or, even better, BROTHERS. Now they have a bigger connection. And hey, this way Asha can actually become a princess/queen by the end of the movie when the evil king and queen are defeated, since she's their niece This movie idea could have worked if they just reworked the script a bit
I read somewhere online that originally Asha was going to be King magnifico‘s daughter, which would be extremely interesting, because then she would have to discover that her parents are not who she thought they were. But having Asha being the kings, niece would be really interesting, too, because then, technically, she would become royalty/a princess. The next thing that I would change is obviously change the art style of the movie. I think I would definitely make the movie 2d animated. I would hire Alan menkan to do the music and score. If you don’t know who he is, Alan Menken wrote the music for the little mermaid, Aladdin, etc..
People keep saying to add things from the original concepts but I don't see how any of those things would fix the story of this movie. Having Asha fall in love with the star would just make it more convoluted and unnecessary. The star was only there to help her achieve her goal and then he left at the end once that was achieved.
The idea of managing and not granting everyone their wishes based on how much it will help or f-up society is a great furtile ground for story-telling how they screw that up is amazing. I mean it is a good way to show how both totalitarian and anarchy is a bad in both extremes, but that is too smart for modern Disney.
AI isn't immune to editing. Humans accepted the output, edited it, completed it, and decided this was good enough for Disney's 100th. The creativity is gone. The AI is just a symptom.
The fact that there’re _so many_ videos arguing that the villain of this movie isn’t even a villain is very telling. And most of those videos aren’t just being funny: they bring up solid points why King Magnifico isn’t evil, at least not at first. He contemplates the ripple effects of every wish he grants before doing so, only granting wishes that won’t damage the community. That’s what any sane and responsible sorcerer should do, and the film paints him as wrong for it? It’s not until the Luma shows up and makes the king feel threatened for some reason that he becomes truly (and inexplicably) maniacal. I agree with the reviewers who have argued that Asha should have turned out to be a twist villain. Have her arc be her coming to realize that the king is right, and her “everyone deserves to have their wishes granted” philosophy cannot work in real life. That could’ve been really interesting.
I'm sorry but ONWARD was AMAZING. It's such a unique story. And when the younger brother gave up his chance to meet his dad for the first time and let his older brother see him bc they actually had a relationship while the younger wasn't even born to even know his father, so he knew how much it meant for the older brother to see the guy he looked up to one last time, I almost cried😭😭😭 that movie was super imaginative and touching!🥺🥺🥺
Wish Disney had made the movie Wish a 2D 3D hybrid animation just like Paperman 2012 short which ironically was made by Disney! It had a very fresh look and new perspective into animation. For so long I hoped this style would again be implemented in a Disney Movie…..not like this 😞
I thought it was written by AI because I've used sudowrite and novelai to write stories for lulz. The stories that get generated are middle of the road, vanilla safe content. You need to manually alter the generated content afterwards if you want to steer the thing in a certain direction. If you let the AI do the whole thing on auto pilot, the story ends up being pointless or... soul less.
This could work much better as a story from Magnifico's point of view, where he's a tragic hero corrupted by dark magic while trying to save his kingdom and forever trapped in a mirror while a young woman runs the kingdom he built into the ground as she has no idea how to run a kingdom or handle granting wishes, and she eventually turns to him in the mirror for help, setting him up at the magic mirror, and Asha starts to lose it from the pressure, going evil herself and leaving the kingdom to go marry into another one. She takes the mirror with her, and bam surprise prequel. The seven dwarves are the descendants of her friends, living out in the woods after the kingdom fell to ruin. I know it's a bit fanfictiony, but it's better than wish was. Or it could another route, where the king is corrupted by dark magic and the city turns on him and Asha realizes he's been corrupted and uses the Star or whatever to heal him and they then work together to grant wishes with her compassion covering for his strict views. It'd be kinda the same no real villain thing but it'd be more nuanced than this.
Encanto was great, but then again it was aimed towards a VERY specific demographic that knew EXAAAACTLY where Mirabel and Bruno were coming from.... 😭😭😭 Because intergenerational trauma is a bitch
I want a meta style of animated movie about a protagonist who knows they’re in an animated movie and knows how people are badly receiving the movie they’re in, lamenting that they can’t do anything about it at first and proceeding to go on a journey of either accepting themself or finding their creator and demanding change. I haven’t seen Wish but I like to imagine the main song as Asha wishing for more than what Disney itself gave to her and her story. (“More for us than this”? Like, hello?)

I’m with you, I didn’t really care for Encanto either!

CGI artists apparently aren't as well unionized as 2d'ers are.

It got to the point where Disney animators and screenwriters said that the movie is nothing more than an empty shell of what it once was.
both
In Netflix's 'Klaus' they made a spectacular job with the animation (great story too).
That's the problem - Disney is not the industry innovator anymore. Heck, literally ANY OTHER STUDIO is by that point.
The irony in Klaus being more innovative than modern Disney movies is that the movie was written and directed by a former Disney concept artist. Sergio Pablos worked on some of Disney’s Renaissance Era and early 2000s films (Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Tarzan, and Treasure Planet.)
I love Klaus and I hope we see many more 2D movies from SPA Studios.
There is a tik tok from an animator (and former Disney animator) that said Disney physically can’t make 2D anymore because they don’t have any of the tech or the know how anymore.

YASSS, WE LITERALLY GOT ✨ROBBED✨, Seriously Disney…

IMO she should have either been his blood daughter or adopted one, Asha being forced to defy her own father, and amaya would have a good reason to chose her over magnifico.

This is sort of a Frozen situation, when you look at the history in the making of Frozen they originally were gonna have Elsa be a villain until they made Let It Go. About the Magnifico spilling his guts to Asha about the wishes- thing:
Why not have him reveal the secret to her, and when she reacts how she does in the film, he just goes "Oh...

Honestly this sounds awesome. 😳
When I read the line "Well....I was hoping you wouldn't react like all the others...." I felt more threatened from that line than anything Magnifico did in the movie 😂😂😂😂
This line is perfect and menacing coming from a villain because it basically communicates to us the audience that this main character we're following is not going to be given any shortcuts and is mortal like the rest of us
Honestly that sounds like a good movie.
He learns he can't keep wishes away from everyone and she learns she can't grant every wish because they're not all good for everyone. They come to a compromise which would be very mature and a good lesson for children. But nope.
@@zoeb3573 That’s a much better lesson for the movie to have.

Mickey is dead at this point 😂😂
But good point! They never put out Mickey content
Eh, I agree on Nimona and Suzume - both excellent films. I hated the Boy and The Heron and couldn't wait for it to end.
@@commandershepard9920 Fair. I havent seen the 2 anime movies yet, but I do respect the effort that went into them
@@MillyKKitty Yeah, was just speaking for myself. To be fair, I'm not a fan of Gibli films in general, I haven't liked any of them I've seen. Doesn't make them bad, just not for me.
The movie already pulled off the cel-shaded look beautifully. It's not like it needed more detail anyway.
I forgot that Strange World was even a thing. That's really telling about Disney's lack of advertising.
I’ll never forgive them for not giving us the Royal villain couple
Magnifico was hot af and deserved better
I second this comment...also love your pfp and Username. :D
Theres so much passion, whimsy, heart, and dedication that Disney inspires in creators & consumers alike; it’s heartbreaking (and dare I say disrespectful) when the company itself can’t care (and love) its creations the way we do…
Tbf, he kinda was…..
What could’ve made this movie better is if they kept the concept of the star being a shapeshifter giving us a Star Boy and kept the Queen as being evil as well giving us an evil couple
After listening to the first few lines of Wish's 'Villain Song' I had to go listen to Hellfire just to remind myself what a proper villain song is.
Fr. They could have at least gave him a second song that screams “I’m the villain and this is my plan”
It's closer to a hero song than the actual hero song
Boi What's "Plan Z" song based on Plankton from Spongebob had more spirit and passion put into it then Magnifico's song was for "Wish".
If Disney used AI to make the intro of their hit series Loki. It is not surprising that they would use AI to write a whole movie script.

The Princess and the Frog, Disney's last 2D animated princess movie from 2009, handled the wishing upon a star theme better than Disney's Grand 100 film... It's just sad
Last I heard, they were planning on doing their own distinct 3D characters on 2D settings
But then they found out that was actually really hard, and Disney isn't a huge fan of risks
Its sad this is what Disney is now, especially compared to the movies that came before that are classic.
But, at the same time it makes sense, this movie represents Modern Disney all too well.

Man... Beating the bad guy with the *power of friendship* would have been a better ending.
in my opinion Encanto was the last piece of media Disney released that felt like it had soul, it felt like it was trying to do too much at times but it was charming, fun, had good songs, a good message and likeable characters, I personally really love it but I can understand why some think It's generic because the story is pretty straightforward
All Disney movies have a straightforward story. That's a stupid complaint to raise about something being "generic".

I asked ChatGPT:
"Please come up with a disney style movie plot surrounding a wishing star and the film revolves around granting wishes. The villain is a sorcerer and can also grant wishes."
That's the plot that I gathered from this film.
ChatGPT replies:
"In the kingdom of Lumina, nestled under a sparkling night sky, a fabled wishing star named Stella radiates with the power to grant wishes.
And amidst the starry night, Lumina thrives once more, embracing the magic of Stella's wishes in harmony and joy."

About the animators' time constraints, I heard rumours that the movie was animated in 4 months, which is absolutely insane. I mean sure, not everyone is like Miyazaki taking months to animate a scene, but 4 months for a whole movie, as important as a 100th anniversary no less, is just madness

Ironically, Wish probably couldn't be a better representation of what Disney has become.
I agree that the villain wasn’t very great, but your complaints about his motivation and what could have worked was explained in the movie’s opening narration.
It was pretty much exactly what you were suggesting would have been a good background:
His home and family was destroyed by evil robbers or something and he escaped to the island, learns magic and becomes a sorcerer, establishes the kingdom and takes it upon himself to protect people’s wishes with his magic so that his people don’t suffer like he did.
As a non writer an idea I came up with on the spot for why the king doesn't grant the wishes is because otherwise everyone would become spoilt and in a kingdom where anyone can do/be/have whatever they whenever they want nothing has meaning (when everyone is special nobody is special type of thing).
I actually really liked Luca and thought it’s the best thing they’ve made in a long time
I liked Luca too. It’s a very wholesome movie and I couldn’t help but smile at how the boys’ friendship was handled.
Encanto and Turning Red were good, too. Haven't seen Onward, but it's on my list (I love urban fantasy).
Btw is it me or does it seem like this movie was trying to mimic nimona’s art style?
Like, nimona made this style look so much better lol
I was wondering why it looked so funny, it looks like an old barbie movie with a flat background!
I loved the style used in Paperman. I thought this was going to be the same style.
Funny how DreamWorks just a year ago made a movie about wishes (that also had the word "Wish" in its title), and that movie was universally praised!
The real crushed dream was your expectations for this move dying along the way.
I love how trolls 3 is getting better reception than wish.

All their marketing seemed to be "LOOK! THE MAIN CHARACTER IS BLACK!" And I knew nothing else about it. I guess that's why... They didn't need a story , they needed a black character. Like Tiana never existed
"LOOK! MAIN CHARACTER IS BLACK AND OR ASIAN!"
"LOOK! WHITE MAN BAD! WHITE WOMAN STUPID! MAN OF COLOR GOOD! WOMAN OF COLOR STRONG!"
"LOOK! SOMEONE IS LGBTQ+"
"**LOOK! QUIRKY!! MILLENNIAL HUMOR!**"
that's basically what almost all movies have been.
You can't just "wish" for a skill, you need to actually put effort into developing it.
old person reference: this reminds me of a movie you would find in a bin of dvds at a dollar store
Luca was underrated as hell.
Simple:
- make the star a shappeshifter boy and Asha's love interest (like it was in the concep art that they threw away), I know some people dont like it but Disney became what they are by writing romances in their stories;
- make the goat shut up and give him a decent dynamic with Asha, they barely interact as friends in the movie;
- make the king AND queen the villains (again, like in the concept art) so we can have our first disney evil couple, with an evil bombastic and dramatic duet;
- Asha's already Magnifico apprentice at the start of the movie, so they already have a bond and this bond can be shaken when she learns the truth. This way the king would also feel betrayed by her;
- Better yet make Asha's late father and Magnifico best friends or, even better, BROTHERS. Now they have a bigger connection. And hey, this way Asha can actually become a princess/queen by the end of the movie when the evil king and queen are defeated, since she's their niece
This movie idea could have worked if they just reworked the script a bit
Oml the concept sounds way better than the wntire movie! Why did they scrap all that good stuff away. And we were robbed of a villain couple smh
Wow this is actually great
I read somewhere online that originally Asha was going to be King magnifico‘s daughter, which would be extremely interesting, because then she would have to discover that her parents are not who she thought they were.
For so long I hoped this style would again be implemented in a Disney Movie…..not like this 😞
I call this 'Encanto done badly,' and I loved Encanto.
I thought it was written by AI because I've used sudowrite and novelai to write stories for lulz. The stories that get generated are middle of the road, vanilla safe content. You need to manually alter the generated content afterwards if you want to steer the thing in a certain direction. If you let the AI do the whole thing on auto pilot, the story ends up being pointless or... soul less.
I think wish, Encanto, Luca, onward, and so on we’re amazing movies
@KingMagnificoWish camilo
How the hell are you going to put Luca on the same tier as fucking onward Luca is an amazing movie
Soul was phenomenal, but it feels like everything afterwards (save maybe Encanto) was an afterthought.
Encanto was great, but then again it was aimed towards a VERY specific demographic that knew EXAAAACTLY where Mirabel and Bruno were coming from.... 😭😭😭 Because intergenerational trauma is a bitch
The animation for Disney's Centennial milestone, looks like a barely finished episode of Sophia the First
