This album was my introduction to Frank Zappa. I was about 14 and had been getting into stuff like Sabbath, Bad Co., and Deep Purple. I had no idea stuff like this was out there! I've been listening to Franks music for decades. He was such a talented genius. RIP Frank.
Frank called that shots, that's for sure. I think the guys that played with him knew full well what they were getting into. I think it was a badge of honor for them. So many fine players went through his bands.
Johnny guitar Watson, tearing it up again
Great song! Chester Thompson on drums who later went on to play with Genesis on their tours when Peter left and Phil Collins would sing live. Phil and Chester played outrageous together. Check out the video "Duke's Travels/Duke's End" live from The Lyceum 1980. It will blow your minds.
"Oh bobby, I'm sorry you got a head like a potato … I really am"
So far you guys have tapped four songs from the same Zappa 'era.' Tip of the iceberg, wait til you hear other songs from different parts of his career, this stuff came when he reached his peak in composition, performance, and engineering. Good place to start, but oh so much more to experience. Welcome to the Zappaverse!
Watson's interjections, man. "Got to call it"; "C'MERE"
Johnny Guitar Watson is the hammer that bangs the nail in, once again. I love what he adds to Frank stuff.
I love this song it’s been years
He composed the music and knew what he wanted and would run long open auditions to find the right people to play it. Anyone applying knew full well it was his band and you’d be put in the very demanding position of playing his music. He ran it as a business with band members on the payroll.
In my opinion, “We’re Only In It For The Money” is the most important album Zappa made. But you really have to listen to the whole thing at once, with the album art and lyrics in front of you, to get it. And understanding that it was released in 1968, the year after “Sgt. Pepper’s”, at the height of the hippie culture. You can’t really understand Zappa without that experience.
"Oh, Bobby, I'm so sorry you got a head shaped like a potato...I really am..." Gotta love George Duke. R.I.P.
I’ve been a Frank fan since I was a young teen. From NY living in SoCal now. Own every note that he has ever released and was lucky enough to see him live seven times. Mostly the Halloween shows he played in NY every year. I’ve heard the both of you mention that he was becoming a favorite guitarist. In that case you should really check out some of his “Shut Up and Play Your Guitar” collection. True mastery.
Zappa could do and did do anything: jazz, rock, doo-wop, funk, punk, orchestrated music, classical modernism, show tunes, opera, electronic, musique concrete, on and on. There are some 113 studio albums that have been released with more coming. Yeah, I said it. He recorded everything he did, even the interactions between the band members in off-hours, which may be released at some time, as well. He put all the recordings into a huge vault behind his house.
Thrilled you guys are taking on FZ and digging it! Keep 'em coming!
"Potato head Bobby was a friend of mine,
Don't forget the fretless guitar used on this album, & especially in this song....
My older brother used to listen to Zappa that’s how I got into him love this song
At this time (if I'm not totally wrong - correct my comment) there were a lot of "Rock-Stars" of that time, they got their houses there.
