    Hi, Sight After Dark, I appreciate that you have already reacted to this tune. ....I am not a member of your Patreon group, and under current circumstances, it is unlikely that I will become so, in the imminent future. However, I appreciate your reviews and share your admiration for all things Zappa. The above, video is from the start of the tour and became much-beloved from the fan-favourite album, Roxy and Elsewhere. However, many years later, as part of the series: You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Volume 2 there was a complete recording of a live concert in Helsinki, Finland, from the end of the same tour - by this time, the band are so tight that, whilst the music is the same, they have reached another level (and without the gyrating distraction of Ms Pamela Miller). Because I am not a Patreon member, I can only appeal to your leisure and audio-pleasure time. Listen to the whole album, of for an introduction, the emotional beauty of Frank's solo, which actually begins at approx the 4 minute mark. This is not a very exciting or dramatic solo, but wow, is it emotional and FFS it s Frank! ruclips.net/video/idv1k4N03S0/видео.html

And Napoleon too: His voice is amazing in here. Frank's SG has a great sound with the Big Muff fuzz pedal. Combined with a Wah at the lowest position I think (?) I can be wrong. I remember us Zappa freaks waiting for the Roxy movie being released. It took light years. It is the holy grail of FZ music. And now we also have the Roxy performances 7-CD set. A goldmine

    The 1973 band began as FZ-guitar, George Duke-keyboards, Jean Luc Ponty-elec.violin, Sal Marquez-trumpet, Bruce Fowler-trombone, Tom Fowler-bass & Ralph Humphrey-drums. That was the band that you did a reaction to Dupree's Paradise live in Sweden. After the first half of that year, touring restarting in late summer '73, Frank dispensed with Jean Luc Ponty and Sal Marquez in favor of Napoleon Murphy Brock plus he added a second drummer, a very young unknown Chester Thompson. Now in the late sixties with the Mothers of Invention, he had two drummer line-up with Jimmy Carl Black and Billy Mundi (1967/68). This 1973/74 edition of the band he one upped it with two full drum sets plus a full percussion set. And if you don't know, in this show you just watched at The Roxy (december 1973) there is a set where you've got Ralf, Chester, Ruth and Frank Zappa himself, all banging away on drums on the song Dog Breath.

      @marcribe6483 2 года назад

      @Zolar Czakl Yes I did forget to mention that pairing. Thanks. I have a personal opinion that might not be shared by all but here goes. Art Tripp III is the first drummer in the Mothers that could read music. As such, Frank could expand the difficulty levels of his written percussion leaving JBC to be utilized moreso as a character in the band (like Motorhead Sherwood), with his distinct vocals and hand percussion's (not exclusively but primarily) and sometimes light keyboards even. So I didn't really think of JCB as the drummer of the group as much by then, just the indian of the group, as his famous phrase goes. Most arguments regarding the end of the so-called "Original" Mothers revolve around the band not making any real money. In time I have come to the conclusion that one of the factors that weighted on Frank to dissolve the group as a somewhat closed unit was the fact that his compositional needs had evolved to a point that the limits of the band were hindering his artistic goals. He needed better musicians that could play what he wrote the way he wrote it. And by 1969 he had made a name and a reputation that attracted musicians offering their services. Also, Frank could now afford them albeit still to a moderate degree. So that's my two cents on how I figure some of the reasoning went down around that time.

    • @marcribe6483
      @marcribe6483 2 года назад

      @Zolar Czakl I too saw The Grandmothers in late summer 2000 at The Wetlands in NYC near SoHo. JCB, Don Preston and Bunk Gardner plus three Europeans on drums (? forgot who), bass (Ener Bladerzipper) and guitar (Sandro Oliva). Jimmy Carl Black in front as main vocalists and playing percussion via a keyboard as well as actual hand percussion's. Awesome show, a great night out, plus I got autographs.

    • @marcribe6483
      @marcribe6483 2 года назад

      @Zolar Czakl The guitarist most likely was the Italian Sandro Oliva, who also uses the characteristic mustache and goatee. I'm thinking most likely its the same band except on drums you had Billy Mundi and I got a guy from Germany or Scandinavia or wherever. From what I remember, Sandro Oliva was heavily involved working with JCB; not just a hired hand.

    On the 2 drummers: in the Zappa drummers video they both explain what Frank's purpose was: Ralph Humphries (the educated drummer) played everything techically correct, while Chester Thompson played for the feel, the funk/soul, and they decided to tune their kits a 3rd apart from each other so they wouldn't get in each other's sonic space.

  • @bernardsalvatore1929
    @bernardsalvatore1929 2 года назад +1

    Yes Frank had two drummers in most of the bands that he had except when he had like Terry Bozzio on the drums which you don't really need two drummers cuz Terry Bozzio can probably play two sets of drums at the same time!! This was typically what you would get at a Zappa show from the mid-70s up through the early 1980s and Beyond probably till about 1985 or so when you went to a Frank Zappa concert you didn't know what to expect!! But stuff like this girl coming on stage and doing what she did and audience participation were par for the course with Frank!! Those were fun times and not too many bands got the audience involved as much as Frank Zappa did!!

    AS others have noted, Frank used two drummers in the '60s: Jimmy Carl Black & Billy Mundi (which didn't quite work and often resulted in JCB switching to trumpet or backing vocals) and later Jimmy Carl Black & Art Tripp (which worked great, with JCB providing a steady backbeat and Tripp playing weird fills around him).
    For the band in this clip, Ralph's specialty was tricky time signatures (which he had experience in from playing with avant-garde jazz bandleader Don Ellis) with Chester adding the "attitude".

    OK... lol... "Why?"
    Well... I'm glad you guys asked that. Us Zappa fans have been very calm and behaved with the "ZAPPA REACTORS"...And you guys are among the best.... BUT..... there is still one thing that maybe you haven't completely grasped yet...Zappa did EVERYTHING ... to entertain himself FIRST, and if other people liked it ... great... if they didn't... fuck 'em.
    That's why Zappa loved New York... people said "Fuck you"... if they meant "Fuck you".
    NOW... back to your burning question "Why?"
    Well... it would seem that Frank wanted to fuck with Nappy during this song. So... before the show... Zappa obviously told that girl to grab Nappy by the crotch while he is supposed to be playing his sax... which she does... causing Nappy to completely fuck up his sax part in the song... to the point where he finally picks her up and whispers in her ear... "Go over and fuck with Chester on the drums... there's motherfucking TWO of them!" LOL. Now, I'm not sure that's EXACTLY what he said... but judging from the fact that the next thing that the girl does is to go fuck with Chester, I'm pretty sure I'm close.
    Nappy understands that Zappa has decided to fuck around on this take of the song, so he plays along. Because... Nappy, Zappa and Duke, and Chester all had a real brotherly love thang going on between them. It was the closest that Zappa ever was to having friends in his group. And for Zappa... that's saying A LOT.
    So Nappy knew how to go with the flow, because ,remember... the real answer to your question "Why?" is the Zappa acronym AAAFNRAA (Anything, Anytime, Anywhere, For No Reason At All).
    Nappy understood all bets were off and this take of the song was for fun... he had no way of knowing that Zappa actually intended to use it (silly him), and he figured since this version of the song was DEFINITELY not going on the album with all his fuck-ups in it... why not make the drummer fuck up also?
    This was the mind set of these guys on stage. They could play anything Zappa threw at them at any speed... so... they could also fuck it up if asked.
    This band would put an ugly, scary mask called "the booger bear" on the doorknob of the guy who went to bed with the ugliest groupie.
    Do you see where I'm going with this?
    Zappa LOVED sex.
    I don't know if Zappa got down and dirty with Pamela (probably)... But I'm sure SOMEONE in that band did.
    So... does that answer your question... "Why?"
    Oh... and Zappa used Two Drummers in his 1968 band and in 1974 and technichally if you consider Ed Mann (percussionist) a drummer... then Zappa has had 2 drummers for many of his tours and in that case... this wouldn't be 2 drummers... it's 3 ... with Ruth.
    In fact... in this video (Roxy, The Movie) on the song Uncle Meat... Zappa also plays drums and there are FOUR drummers.
    Zappa liked drums.

    This is the only FZ group I can recall that used two full drum kits but am probably wrong. Other groupings had one kit plus Ruth Underwood filling in. I love this for the buffoonery. You never knew what might happen at a Zappa gig. I agree with Dan and Sifa about it detracting from the song. It's a great song and there's a far musically superior version of this with almost the same band as this. The Helsinki concert. It's tremendous and contains one of my favourite Frank guitar solo's.
    Don't want the "experts" whinging but Frank knew his audience. Though the set lists were similar, for his U.S. tours, a lot more lewdness/sex/soft porn was required for his audience. For his European/Scandinavian audiences, it was more pure music based. This song is a perfect example. Please check for yourself ruclips.net/video/idv1k4N03S0/видео.html

    I love all these comments from knowledgeable Zappa aficionados.
    Personally I am an uptight WASP Christian. But I don't impose my code on others, and I have appreciated Zappa's genius and loved his music since I was a teen in 1968. Sure I'm offended by some of his stuff, and my own values are way different from his (there is *huge* overlap too on a lot of stuff. . . but that's a whole long essay). I'll give him this: he is an equal opportunity offender---you could call him a misogynist, but hey, do men get a pass in his satire? Ha ha.
    Anyhow, lots of great comments. I want to echo the point that what he does, he does for his own amusement; listen to almost any interview. It just happens to be brilliant and virtuosic and he brings out the very best in the amazing musicians he hires.
    As usual, the performances here are mind-boggling outstanding, and the composition is unbelievably great. As for the performance art, I think it's an essential part of this performance, once again showing the immense talent of NMB, not to mention the other virtuosos on stage! What're ya gonna do with genius?

It's all part of giving the audience what they want, I suppose. My oldest brother went to a concert where Frank invited female fans to remove their undies and throw them onstage, so that Frank can show them to the audience and hang them on a clothes line.

      The whole panty thing was started by female fans throwing their panties on stage long before he 'asked' for them. It's not really a song, rather a musical interlude where FZ talks about all the undies they have collected, and how he was having someone make a quilt out of them. He then offers up several ways that women could provide them 'discretely,' and the whole thing is a hoot. I saw several of these panty collection moments in shows I went to, and even Dweezil had the same thing happen and started encouraging 'donations' at his shows. If you look at the City of Tiny Lites video, you will see a couple of pair fly up while he is soloing at the edge of the stage. Zappa did not start it, but he sure did play it up when he saw it as another humorous aspect he could add to his shows.

    Zappa has quite a weird humor; this was a good example of it. The guitar solo was great; like you we would have liked to see more of him instead of the girl.
    We highly recommend a reaction to Barbara Dennerlein. She is a German jazz organist and especially renowned for her bass pedal work. She is one of the few German jazz-musicians with an international reputation; an absolute virtuoso. She plays a modified/midified Hammond B3 with some sampled sounds like vibraphone, piano, trumpet or, for the pedals, acoustic bass. She also plays jazz on pipe organs. The late Keith Emerson was a huge fan of her, by the way. We could recommend many videos; take your pick from these (best start with the first one; we bet you will want to see them all after that):
    Barbara with band (Mitch Watkins on guitar, Rick Keller on sax and Tony Reedus on drums). This is an up-tempo number; Barbara plays "piano" on her organ. Extremely fast bass pedal work. All members get their solos; Barbara does the third solo. It is a live version of the title track from her 1992 album "That's Me".
    ruclips.net/video/tsW3V4rrRsw/видео.html
    Or how about a blues? A slower number, but Barbara's long solo has some extremely fast runs, and she uses many unusual playing techniques in it. This one features Brian Pardo on guitar, who plays an excellent solo too, and Paul van Wageningen on drums. The tune is called "Farewell to Old Friends" and originally appeared on her 1999 album "Outhipped".
    ruclips.net/video/vQ6Hr5Pe3is/видео.html
    Or how about a video with a bass pedal solo by Barbara? This one is a duo formation; the drummer is Daniel Messina. The track is called "Jimmy's Walk" and appeared on her 2001 album "Love Letters". It is an homage to famous jazz-organist Jimmy Smith, with whom she has a complicated backstory that went from friendship to the opposite; there is an interview in which she talks about it. She also plays "vibraphone" with the midi-technology of her organ in this video.
    ruclips.net/video/LYP7Mxss3_U/видео.html
    Or how about a pipe organ solo by Barbara? This one is an improvisation based on her composition "Downtown N.Y." from her album "That's Me"(the RUclips title is misleading); some parts from compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn are also worked in.
    ruclips.net/video/oHxPScRbV3c/видео.html
    Her relationship with Jimmy Smith started like this: When Barbara Dennerlein was fifteen years old she took place in an organ talent contest to which Jimmy Smith was invited as guest of honor; he wasn't a member of the jury though. Barbara played a jazz number and came in as second in the contest, the one who won played a pop song. The contestants who landed on places 1-3 were asked to play again. The one who won the contest played the same pop song. Barbara decided to play a different jazz number than the one she had played in the contest, and while she was playing she noticed someone gently putting her hair, which was very long at that time, aside to sit down beside her and play together with her - Jimmy Smith! This was of course a slap in the face for the jury; the great Jimmy Smith playing with the one they had put in second place! The one who came in third wisely decided not to play again after this.
    For several years Jimmy and Barbara kept a good friendship; they appeared at each others concerts, went to restaurants together and the likes. Then in 1988 the German TV-show Jazz-Club thought it was a good idea to invite both Barbara and Jimmy to the show; they were supposed to do a number together. Shortly before the show started Barbara asked Jimmy what they should play, and suddenly he turned furious: "You and me play together? They don't pay me enough for that"! Apparently Jimmy was afraid of the direct comparison and that he might come out "second", whatever that means. Fancy that - the man who many consider to have been the best jazz organist in the world was afraid to play together with Barbara Dennerlein! In a weird way this is the highest compliment for Barbara, but of course it is sad too. As Barbara often says: "Music is a communication, not a competition"; she definitely doesn't like attributes like "the best". So they both appeared at the show, but not playing together.
    Here is one of the tunes she played in that show, "Tribute to Charlie" which is from her 1987 album of the same name; the Charlie in question is Charlie Parker. The number starts with a bass pedal solo; Barbara is accompanied by Thomas Brill on guitar and Andreas Witte on drums. If you are curious what Jimmy Smith played on that show we could give you a link to that too.
    ruclips.net/video/JUnG97D8c50/видео.html
    There are many more videos of her on RUclips; just look them up when you become addicted to her (as we are certain you will). We saw her live several times, and it was always a great experience.

    This is the kind of performance that always made me uneasy. Long tours I guess. If I had a camera following me around 30 years back there would be moments of cringe. I've always seen this as one of the late 60's early 70's attempts at a feminist perspective on free love. The balance of power here is still skewed, but from what I remember as a young girl who was only 14 in 1980 it was a lot worse for many. I admired Pamela when I finally read about her in music magazines and the Guardian in the early 80s. Frank Zappa was never going to be woke, and mostly for the right reasons. But only mostly. As with most great artists, he went way over the line at times. Unlike some fans, I've never begrudged Gail her recent strops. For all I admire the man, he deserved it. For years he was treated as some kind of saint by many lauded as a man who never did what he sang. Oh yes he did. But in the end, it's the body of work that counts. And that far outweighs his indiscretion.

    • @Peter-K
      @Peter-K 2 года назад +1

      You also have to take into account the era in which Frank lived, and given he was a performer in the burgeoning rock industry, he was surrounded by women like Pam. It is not an indictment of all women, but at that time, 'free love' or more accurately, recreational sex was everywhere. It continued from the 60s through most of the 70s, and it wasn't until AIDS emerged that people finally toned down their behavior. As far as lauding him as a saint for not doing what he sang, who were these people? I have been a fan of his for nearly 50 years, and I never thought he was a saint in any way. In the USA we still have an underlying Puritan ethic that makes many cringe at things like nudity or sex, yet that is a lie too, just look at the porn industry. Too many pretend to be morally upright in public, while being rather decadent in private. From the very beginning Frank saw that, and a lot of his 'saucier' lyrical excursions just exposed that hypocrisy.

    • @yiasemi
      @yiasemi 2 года назад

      @@Peter-K Sure. Frank Zappa had a very sharp eye for social norms and society but free love in practice was very one-sided sex-wise, that much I remember myself as a girl at the time.
