Agreed. It was as powerful as the scene in "The Crown" when Queen Mary knelt before her granddaughter Queen Elizabeth after her son (George VI) passed away and she arrived back in the UK from her African trip.
Eileen Atkins was excellent playing Queen Mary both in this series and in "The Crown."
I don't think she was saying he must support himself, she was indicating that she was now his subject and he was her sovereign as indicated by the bow of the head. I am surprised that the Dr didn't say 'The King is dead, long live the King' indicating that monarchy goes on.

True to George V’s prediction, Edward ruined himself within a year of his father’s death. Thankfully, his abdication cleared the way for George VI - a good man and a great king, who fearlessly led his people through the most destructive conflict in human history - and, ultimately, Elizabeth II, the remarkable lady whose devotion to her duty has proven her a great queen and a British institution all unto herself. God save Her Gracious Majesty!

To be clear, Edward's abdication didn't clear the way for Elizabeth, who would have inherited the Crown upon her uncle's death, since he died childless and her father predeceased her. It almost certainly would have been better for Elizabeth and her family as people, although almost certainly worse for the UK and the Commonwealth to have had Edward through the second world war and into the early 70s.

We were taught NEVER to show emotions - especially in public. That has somewhat lightened up in my generation, but what is left of the older still hold to this conception. I was told it was to show that we were different from others, on a higher plane - with a higher expectation of deportment. Now, most civilized people don't hold to such dribble.
She was a strong and powerful lady, I'm sure that she could've been a great queen, I mean not consort queen but reigning monarch, she had a very good idea about what duty means.

@trixwiz7 According to George VI's biographer, Sarah Bradford, both Edward VIII and George VI were victims of the martinet upbringing imposed on them by their father, George V. Edward, the extrovert, rebelled by acting contrary to his father's wishes, while "Bertie" (as George VI was known growing up) withdrew into himself. Given the limitations to which a constitutional monarchy is subject, George VI had the better personality for the job. His wife was a great help in the PR department too.
Edward did not become George VI upon his accession. He retained his name and became King Edward VIII, and when he abdicated, his brother Prince Albert became King George VI, and when King George VI died, his daughter Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II, and when she passed away, her son retained his name and thus became King Charles III.
Thanks God Edward VIII's reign was so brief. He would have been a dreadful king, especially during the war. George VI turned out to be a wonderful king and a true hero.

I wouldn't call it Regicide as he wasn't expected to survive the night, 72 hours tops. He was well on his way out and nothing was going to stop it. All Dawson did was accelerate the process. If he did nothing, he'd most likely would have died that night anyway or two more days on the outside.
I LOVE the portrayal of the conflict between Albert and Edward vs. Archbishop Lang right off the bat.
For all of Edward's faults, and we all know what they were, Lang was the worst sort of cleric. Judgemental, hypocritical, and tyrannical... although there is little evidence that he was actually corrupt. Lang was a vicious opponent of any object or any idea developed after 1910, and he orchestrated Edward VIII's downfall with the political skill of Martin Bormann. As an American, I see the exact same type of conduct in televangelists and Baptist celebrity preachers all the time and am continually disgusted with it.

I myself am Episcopalian, a faith that I am content with. I appreciate the ritual and liturgy. I joke about it somewhat, calling it "Diet Catholic, all the ritual but half the guilt!", but there's something in the Book of Common Prayer that appeals to me.
And there is **nothing** that appeals to me about some 'faith-healing' con artist in a Dior suit and Rolex saying that the congregation needs to donate so he can buy a private jet. I try instead to focus on my relationship with God, and being a better man than I was yesterday. As I said, I'm far from perfect! But I'm not the wolves my Uncles remain to this day. Their time grows short, but they have yet to change their ways. Such are Narcissist. It is because of them I left that church. I tried several others, but found the same again and again. Hence, I became what I am today.
I help people when I'm able. Especially the homeless and hungry. I support St. Judes Children's Hospital. Small things all, but every little bit helps.

@mindspring57 and now that Prince William is to marry Catherine (Kate) the Royal line will be solidly English with a nice Scottish twist threw his Grandmother and Great Grandmother (The Queen Mother being pure Scot). The German family line is pretty much weeded out with this up coming marriage.
I don't think the German part will ever completely go away so long as any of George V's direct descendants, including the current Queen are still around. It will be thinned out with each generation but will always be there.

In the earlier one, she plays Queen Mary in 1936. In the crown, she plays Queen Mary in 1952 (just before her death) It’s Dame Eileen Atkins.

@mindspring57 E VIII wasn't dutiful, that alone makes G better, but apparently he was conscious of the poor. Lots of people also criticise George V for the way he raised his children. It's reasonably well directed criticism as you point out exemplified by Bertie and David. But to be fair I think he wasn't so different to any Victorian father, and so he can't take too much blame in that regard. Have you seen the Lost Prince (about Prince Johnnie), it's very good, I think, but terribly sad too.
I remember when this was first shown on ITV back in the early 00's. Brilliant made for tv. Especially the final scene. Wherein Churchill places a reef on his grave. With words

@mindspring57 Yeah I think that sums up E VIII, he apparently also told a friend he didn't think Hitler was such bad chap. But this visiting Germany business was done more extensively than you'd think, Lloyd George went and met Hitler, so did Lord Halifax, both Britons, having visited Hitler doesn't amount to sympathising with Nazism (although E did). Accepting almost none of the Windsors were intellectually strong, G's a much better King than E, duty wise, but I think E got a raw deal still

@am1966ath The fact that Edward VIII had an attraction for married women (e.g. Thelma Furness) speaks volumes about his character. I agree, Wallis was hated in her day, probably more so than Camilla. Wallis was perceived to have placed the institution of the monarchy in jeopardy by causing the abdication of the King.

No surprises there considering he too was German; Victoria, Albert, Edward VII, Alexandra, George V, Mary ALL GERMANS. Edward VII spent a lot of time in Germany (as did most aristocrats). He was quite taken with the Germans, and most of his relatives over there were Nazis. Unfortunately, he was spineless and Parliament knew he couldn't be trusted to be King during the war. He was seeing Wallis, at the same time she was seeing some SS officer. Parliament allowed him to marry her, and then they used the marriage to turf him off the throne. He had to pretend he abdicated because he was madly in love with Walis. He may have been in love with her, but Wallus was not in love with him, she just wanted all the perks that came with being the King's mistress. They must have had some serious dirt on her, to get her to agree to marry him. The rest of the royal family went along with the charade, because to have protested would have brought about the end of the Monarchy, cause Parliament was not playing.

@trixwiz7 Oh certainly. In the United States, songs like "Silent Night" and Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" were still sung during the war, despite their Germanic origins. Edward VIII's problem, aside from being terminally vain and stupid, was that actually visited Germany, gave the Hitler salute, and, in general, acted in a manner that even the Germans thought was a bit ridiculous. Mountbatten was very clever, managing to get Phillip married to the heiress presumptive!

@trixwiz7 Intellectually, Edward VIII was not the brighest bulb in the box, nor the sharpest knife in the drawer, and that is the most chariable explanation I can provide for him. The rest of the royal family (George V, George VI, Mountbatten, etc.) went into survival mode, and had the good sense to set aside their German origins, and, when necessary, to discard their German relatives.

@trixwiz7 Don't forget, after Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich Agreement in 1938, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth stood with him on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, so that he could receive cheers of the assembled throng. Appeasement was popular in Britain. Many considered it silly to risk war with Germany over the Czechs. It was not until March 1939, when Hitler overran the rest of the country, that Chamberlain woke up. I still think England was better without Edward VIII though.

@@recklesslntent you don't have to have the coronation ceremony to be King/Queen to officially be King/Queen per British law. There has been plenty of legal precedents on that over the years.
What is required to ascend the throne if one is the Heir Apparent/Heiress Presumptive is
One: The current monarch takes his or her last breath and officially pronounced dead by the Royal Physician or any competent licensed physician if he's not around. The Heir Apparent/Heiress Presumptive at that moment or once officially notified of the now previous monarch's death, is now the King/Queen as was the case of the then-Princess Elizabeth she wasn't anywhere near her father at the time of his death. I think they found where she was and either called her, sent a telegram or both. The moment then- Princess Elizabeth was notified of her father's death, she became Queen Elizabeth II.
The Heir Apparent/Heiress Presumptive is usually present in the current monarch's final moments.
Two: the current monarch abdicates and Parliament passes a law making the abdication official. At that moment, the Heir Apparent/Heiress Presumptive becomes King/Queen as was the case for Edward VIII abdicating and his brother, who became George VI the moment Edward VIII abdicated

Edward VI, on the other hand, was the son of King Henry VIII. Maybe it is my own version of "Sandringham Time"? By inadvertently referring to Edward VI, I turned the clock back nearly four centuries!

@mindspring57 Edward VIII was a Nazi sympathiser, or rather he didn't despise the Nazis, as is and (for the most part) was the done thing. But I think that comment about him being German is irrelevant and not quite accurate. In any event, Dicke Mountbatten, who was a lot more German than E VIII served Britain with the utmost courage and some brilliance in both World Wars. Moreover, not all Germans were Nazis just as some without an ounce of German blood supported Hitler.
