We should be promoting “full movement” for live bait, all types! Keep it as lively as you can and as natural as you possibly can, that is the e key to catching fish!
If you can get away with light line I have a great shrimp hack. Get tube jig heads for crappie. Hook the shrimp from under the chin and bring the hook out over the horn. The weight ends up tight underneath, the gold hook blends with the shrimp color, and a lot of the hook is hidden. I have caught a lot of snook and redfish that way with 6 lb test at the beach. If you use light line the hooks are strong enough. I fought a cobia for over an hour with that rig and caught a 38" snook on it. I think I got a lot more bites that way than with heavier stuff and hooking the shrimp normally. Obviously it's no good around structure but in an open area it's no problem. Now I use 10 lb braid and I don't think those hooks are strong enough but back in the mono days it was the only way I liked to use shrimp. It's absolutely awesome for tripletail because of the accuracy you get, but you have to be careful with the structure.
I always go for the tail with smaller , double hook setup when fishing in shady areas , let the live shrimp swims freely while keeps my line intact... also shrimp tends to live longer by setting the hook on tail. I only set on the head when i'm fishing for fingermark or mangrove jack , these bad boys always go for the head first , I've noticed they are attracted to the reflections of the eyes instead of the body .
Hi! If the jig head comes out from the bottom, won’t the shrimp be inverted when you retrieve it? Or it doesn’t really matter if the shrimp is upright or inverted?
I have to rig grass shrimp through mid body. If i rig it through the head or tail, it gets ripped off the hook. There is heavy current where i fish and the strippers short strike the bait. .
Use the method that works best for you and your area. Just be aware, that approach is has the most tendency to spin and helicopter in the water causing unnatural presentations and sometimes tangled lines!
I just put the hook at the bottom of the fish that keep twisting the fish all the way until I get there in the chest and then the hook pops out in the middle of his chest and then I cast and that’s how I do it most of the times
I don’t know how much of a tip this is but when hooking a live shrimp in the head, I try to go as shallow as possible and rely on the horn to hold it on.
You also want to make sure you do not rupture the connection from the brain to the eyes and body! Like a spinal cord….the best bet is from underneath! You can’t argue with biology and science 😉

No it will sit a little crooked but still right side up. Unless it’s a belly weighted jig or winged/swim jig
Nice information❤
Great tips. Thanks Tony!
Nice explanation,
Thanks!
how would you rig the shrimp if you are using a sliding weight such as carolina or nocker rig?
Hook the through the "horn" for carolina rigs.

Speckled trout and flounder always hit the head first. If the tail gets bite off its a sheepshead.
