I’m an endocrinologist - anyone that claims they can do a “full hormone panel” (especially if it’s really expensive) probably does not know what they’re doing! most hormones naturally rise and fall throughout the day, week, and month, so it is very difficult to just check them all at one single point in time and make any determination about what’s going on, because many hormones change minute by minute.
after you come off birth control, it takes your body some time to begin to produce the hormones that regulate ovulation/menstruation (LH, FSH, estradiol, progesterone, etc) on its own again. this is similar to all other hormones (like when men take testosterone, their body will stop making it or make less for a while before recovering and making it normally again). for most, it’s only a few months before periods are regular again, but for others, especially people with PCOS, it can take longer because your body is already not producing these hormones on a regular/cyclic monthly schedule. (it also depends on how long you were on the pill, what kind of pill you were on, etc)
PCOS is definitely a rough road particularly because we know LH has effects on emotion which explains why so many people notice mood swings and heightened emotions during this period!

For Avery and anyone else in the comments struggling with hormone imbalances I highly recommend going to see an endocrinologist if you haven’t already!! It makes so much of a difference to see a doctor/provider that specifically works with hormones, they understand it so well since it is what they specialize in. I am a physician assistant student rotating at an endocrinology clinic right now and it’s crazy how much I’ve learned. I know it can be pricey and I hope you can find someone that takes your health insurance so it can reduce your costs. I hope the best for everyone struggling with their health right now, it is truly so difficult and stressful to go through.

I have the same thing! Was on oral contraceptives for 9 years, decided to stop taking them last June and felt so unwell in July. Went to doctor she got a full blood panel and turns out my prolactin levels were so high, and I tested positive for antinuclear antibodies. Still waiting to get into rheumatologist for autoimmune/ANA results but MRI confirmed I had a microadenoma on my pituitary gland as well. Been taking cybergolene since February and just got a call from my endocrinologist this week after doing updated bloodwork that my prolactin levels are now normal. However, I still haven’t had a period since June. 293 days without period. I had pretty much all symptoms of PCOS, but doctors were hoping that lack of period was because of prolactin levels and lowering them will be the fix to my health problems. However, with still no period they just confirmed I probably have PCOS this week. Not a lot of answers on how to manage this and my journey is just starting. Luckily all of this process has taken place in Canada where I live so it has all been covered. Minus prescriptions.

I’m so glad you’ve chosen to speak about this. It’s so comforting to hear you talk about the effects of birth control because it’s not spoken about enough. I feel so sorry for what you’re going through I couldn’t imagine. I was shocked to hear how badly this has affected you.I went on the implant also, I was on it for 3 years and would pass out from how much blood I was loosing from 3 week long periods. The doctors would just give me more pils to ‘help’ recently I just gave up on it ever getting manageable and got it removed and am now free of birth control it’s the best thing I ever did. I find it so alarming how little it’s spoken about and how we’re just expected to get on with it. And it’s only until now I’ve heard a woman relate to my struggles with it. birth control doesn't cause PCOS. you already had it before getting on birth control. PCOS can be triggered by stressful events and symptoms will be worse if your body or mind is stressed out.

    • @sammi8967
      @sammi8967 4 месяца назад +1

Yes hormonal birth control absolutely contributes to PCOS. You're shutting down your cycle while on it. No ovulation, no menstruation (the bleeding you experience while on HBC isn't a period, it is a withdrawal bleed). Pumping your body full of unnatural hormones and "tricking" it into thinking it's pregnant does absolutely cause damage. Of course it would. It's also 100000% reversible if you put in the work and build your body back up through nutrition, sunlight, sleep and joy.

this is a harsh truth but the more we run away from issues and the present moment, the worse they get. we have to sit with them, in the uncomfortable energy, feel our feelings out, for it be moved somatically throughout the body. our pain just wants to be heard and witnessed just like our shadows want to be held. trying to kick them out without giving yourself grace or embracing those parts of you makes them feel bad, and therefore makes you feel worse 💔 i’ve dealt with these things for so long. your feelings are valid. remember to validate them too ❤️

Oh avrey thank you for sharing this! It’s more helpful than you realize. I also started bc (the pill) when I started dating and was on it for 7 years. Got off it in august 2022 and still struggling. My skin exploded but I feel things are getting better now. Had so many days where I felt awful and would also wish the days away, making rules I could only do certain things I love once I was better. But once I stopped resisting my current state and actually started enjoying my routine (I have been very strict with my routine lol, and I think that’s been what changed everything for me), that’s when I started enjoying life. I feel isolated since none of my friends live the lifestyle I do, and I dont eat at restaurants or go out at night. But I really do enjoy my routine. I also realized how much certain foods irritate my body, mainly gluten eggs pea and coconut milk. I also have gratitude for this experience because it forced me to change my lifestyle much younger than my peers, and I know how to combat inflammation which for me manifested as acne and hormonal imbalances but can have more sneaky symptoms in others, which they don’t realize until decades later and much more damage is done. I’m grateful my body communicated with me and that this lifestyle will benefit me more and more as I age. Sending you lots of love !! ❤️ it will get better

I was on birth control for 2,5 years and before that, just as you, I was super healthy, had regular periods and no issues at all. It's been 1,5 years since I quit (I'm almost 21 now) and my period still isn't regular. I struggled with physical and mental problems during birth control and after. At some point my doctor also suspected PCOS, but I never got a clear answer since it could apparently also be due to the birth control aftermath. I have now finally had two semi-regular cycles and I literally cried. But I'm scared that it's temporary. Hey Avery. I'm sending lots of love towards you. I totally understand being impatient and wanting wounds to be fixed in a blink of an eye...Something that helps me with the patience. Is remembering that we are plants that take time to grow, growth is incremental so every effort you do make is accounted for. Keep up whatever you're doing to be in contact with your body. I also went through a phase in my life of being really disconnected with my body and feeling like an alien. The trick is movement, yoga, walking anything and being present in the body and nature. I started doing a free movement dance class last year that changed my life and helped me even fall in love with every part of my body, wounded parts or not...The body is a plant and truly fantastical even with our wounds, the body loves us unconditionally no matter what you do to it, its doing everything in your favour to live and heal and remembering that you are also not your body but she is there so might as well love her too because she carries you for the rest of your life. It took a lot of time to sit with those wounds but every effort counts, I promise and when you cant sit with them be close to friends and family. Sometimes its hard to see it in that way but with true effort overtime you will get to a happy place, I promise. Just keep sending the intentions of being in love with yourself and life even if its just one moment of the day like doing ur makeup

Same happened to me now studies are showing Pcos is also a direct correlation to the pill being the cause because the pill can cause insulin resistance. Before they said you can have temporary Pcos if it’s due to the pill just give it 3-6 cycles. We now see that’s not the case. Birth control also depletes you of vitamins and nutrients as well.

I recently got my period back after losing it for almost 2 years, all I can say is that I feel your frustration and desperation. The number one things my gynecologist
told me was to take it easy, not only physically, but mentally! Try having as less stress as possible for at least 3 months continuously. It's okay having super bad and super good days but the point is to keep a middle ground, Where you aren't waking up at your lowest or highest.-- Enjoying everything u do; specially what you eat. Lots of healthy fats and resting! No super heavy weights or intense cardio HIT workouts. That's just what worked for me.
I also had to take so. many. bloodwork tests because first they thought it was anemia, thyroid, etc. None of that! My body was just in constant stress. I hope you know you're not alone, and feeling overwhelmed and confused is TOTALLY VALID. Take care Avrey.

while I am very fortunate enough to have a “normal” period cycle, I stil found many aspects of your video VERY HELPFUL and eye opening! Just overall made me feel seen. Especially the part where you talk about not feeling like yourself in your own body. As someone who deals with anxiety and panic symptoms, I feel like many aspects of navigating through the process of healing and reaching a point of normalcy are similar in that you feel helpless and isolated. Just watching your video made me feel better about myself and I am truly thankful. All the best.

Oh Avrey, I've never felt so seen-- I suffer from a rare chronic autoimmune disease and recently came out of remission. I completely understand that feeling of betrayal you get once you realize that your body doesn't work right and the feeling of helplessness that comes with it. I also suffer from that "once I feel better, I'll be able to..." mentality. It's so exhausting to always be waiting to feel better and then just... never feeling better despite doing everything "right." It's such a trap; you're stuck within the pain and the anger and all you want to do is wish it away, but you know that will never happen with chronic issues because you know they'll never go away. What's really been helping me is journaling and approaching my situation in a different light-- for example, would I speak to a friend the way I speak to myself in my head? Would I blame her for having a bad day or being unproductive if I knew the pain she was in? Would I want my friends to blame themselves so harshly for something that's out of their control? I try to treat myself as my own best friend, which is hard when you feel like your own body is betraying you, but it does help. It's definitely a skill to work on and get better at. Forgive yourself, give yourself grace, you deserve it-- you're going through something difficult and it takes all measures of strength to get through it, and sometimes strength comes in different forms. Thank you for sharing!!!! I'm rooting for you!!!!!!!

I've been going through a really similar thing Avrey. I'm finally starting to come out the other side of post-birth-control syndrome but it was so exhausting for a long time and I still have times where I take a couple steps back. I really appreciate you talking about this because I think more people need to talk about the side effects of birth control. I want to emphasize that birth control is amazing and the fact that we have access to it is something that we shouldn't take for granted, but it's not right for everyone.
Your description of "feeling like an alien in my own body" really resonates with me. It's so hard to watch yourself change before your eyes and not understand what's going on or be able to help yourself.
The amount of information is exhausting. The time it takes is exhausting. Insurance is exhausting. But thank you for talking about it.
Not that I want to give out medical advice in this comment, but when I was struggling I did a lot of research and I settled on meeting with a Naturopathic doctor. I was struggling with hormonal acne and extreme hair loss. I got my blood work done with this doctor and I took supplements suggested by the doctor based on my blood tests and it really helped me. It's been about 8 months now and I've seen so much improvement. Obviously do your own research!! But this was seriously a turning point for me in my health journey and I've found a lot of help from Naturopathic medicine.
Good luck to anyone on this journey. Our bodies talk and it's important to listen

heyy i also have pcos. i have been battling with this since i was about 15 and now i'm 18. I've been in birth control too and want to come off it once i go to the doctor and consult my options. It's been helpful to know what my body likes and can receive (for example gluten and coffee make me feel bloated and sleepy afterwards) do go to an endocrinologist, i found out i had insulin resistance and thats what changed everything. My energy levels are better due to my diet and exercise and i have been able to lose like 20 kg. being able to control this has made cravings lessen and i'm currently in a journey to fix my relationship with food and my body (inside and out) . i hope you all can find peace within yourself (mind and body). You are all so strong, and i hope you know that.

I’m with you girl. I was diagnosed with PCOS a few years ago and it’s been really difficult since to figure out the best course of action to actually help get rid of the ovarian cysts. I feel like my doctor kept prescribing different forms of birth control to help with thinning the endometrium lining so that it doesn’t cause bigger issues, but deep down I knew that the birth control is what caused this in the first place. I reached out to a local naturopath that specializes in PCOS and I’m currently on that journey. It’s so hard to figure out what you should do for your specific case because everyone with hormonal issues is different and there’s not one fix. Keep your head up and trust your yourself to make the best decisions moving forward. You got this!

I’m going through exactly that currently and I feel so seen that you are sharing your story. I’ve been bleeding for three month straight with the implant (nexplanon also) and I’ve had it for 2 years and never really had normal periods with it. Once I started bleeding heavily, they decided to give me oestrogen to balance it out and it just made it worst (yeast infection, excessive bleeding, etc). I’ve been crying so much, I’ve been so uncomfortable, I had to take iron supplements too, etc etc etc. It is absolutely the worst time in my life and I struggle to find hope that my body will go back to normal. I’m taking the implant out in 1 week, after a long et stressful back and forth with my doctor who wouldn’t listen to me at all. I’ve been losing hair so much because of all the stress and the lack of iron. Anyway, I feel you, I hear you and I wish you health ❤

i have been on the holistic healing journey for issues with my body, specifically feminine issues throughout my upbringing. i’m 19 now and i’ve healed things holistically within myself i thought would never heal. i highly recommend leaning into that path more if it feels right. it feels never ending when you’re in the thick of it, perhaps unrealistic, but if is a matter of putting in the work and taking care of yourself. sad to say but a lot of things doctors diagnose / try and treat only put bandaids on a larger issue. that’s why you got dig deep and draw out the root causes of issues. it’s much larger than what’s going on a physical scale, we have to evaluate one’s mind, emotions, trauma, and wounding within their lineage. that tells a LOT about how to solve things. i’m wishing you the best

Thank you so much for sharing this Avrey❤️ I’m really sorry that you have to go through this. I also went through a similar thing a couple of years ago.
In 2021 I went on the pill that the gyno recommended to me after doing lots of testing. Turns out that the pill made me feel really bad, so I went on a different pill. I think I tried a total of 4 different ones and each of them made me feel equally bad. I rememeber feeling so bad every day that I didn’t feel like myself at all, I was always sad, my heart was beating really fast, my head was spinning, I couldn’t fall asleep at night, I had derealisation episodes and ended up going to the emergency cause I felt so bad that I completely panicked. Turns out that all my results were fine, but the doctor said that it can be caused by the hormones from the pill, so that was the last day I took it, in the end of 2022.
It took around 6 months for all these symptoms to fully go away, I also quit a job that was making me stressed, so I think that helped too. Since then I never felt any of these symptoms ever again and I started finally feeling like myself and I still do to this day, but now I know that I will never ever go on any form of birth control again.
It was a really difficult time, but I managed to go through it and I’m really keeping my fingers crossed for you❤️ Thank you so much for sharing your story once again, please know that you’re not alone and there was and still is many of us going through it too. Take care!!

I’d also recommend asking for an internal ultrasound to see if you have cysts or how many in your ovaries (to see if you do have PCOS). Poly cystic literally meaning multiple cysts so an internal ultrasound can better show doctors that, along with the full bloodwork! I also got the same on and off diagnosis but they said since I didn’t have multiple cysts, bloodwork was ok and not being overweight it was very unlikely…

Some drugs we’ve learned about so far have side effects that involve hormone levels (prolactin specifically is what I’m thinking of) which can contribute to menstrual cycle abnormalities. But it suddently stopped so I had to get my blood work done and found out I have a brain tumor in my pitituary gland (my prolactin was very high and saw in a scan) so I have been taking some meds to get my period back and try and make the tumor smaller.

I was on birth control for 8 years and when I got off I didn’t get a period for 10 months, then I didn’t get another one for 3 months. Then got diagnosed with PCOS which shook my entire world because all i have ever wanted was to be a mom. I went back on birth control for a couple months and realized it wasn’t for me so I needing to make some holistic changes. I ate low carb, low sugar, low dairy, and low gluten for about two months and started weight lifting. I got my first period in December and have had a regular cycle ever since. I take some supplements like omega 3 fish oil, DIM, and a probiotic. All this to say, I know it’s extremely exhausting going through hormonal issues. I cried pretty much every single day during this time and it was the lowest I had ever felt.
