  • The Kawasaki T-4 is a training aircraft - subsonic combat, built to train pilots for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. In addition to its primary training mission, the Kawasaki T-4 has been used by the JASDF’s Blue Impulse aerobatic team as well as liaison duties with most fighter units.
The T-4 light fighter is essentially a modern successor to the aging Lockheed T-33 line of intermediate jet trainers. The Kawasaki T-4 made its first test flight on June 29, 1985, and was officially released to the public in 1988.

If that's the case, then Japan must now be aggressive in exporting it

For Asian countries it is a good training aircraft but the cockpit is a bit cramped for western Europe and Scandinavia. It is always good to reduce the number of aircraft in use especially when you have a high end air force like Japan. The maintenance cost of an F-15 gives most of us in charge nightmares so cutting cost in other ways is always good.

a trainer is a trainer as long as it gets the job done but that canopy!! i hate those side opening ones just the thought of ejecting through it and having it drag over you no thank you i'd rather belly land it!!

@@keithmoore5306 it reminds me of our PC-7 training aircraft they have the same canopy. I think having it on the lead in jet trainer too might actually be comforting to new pilots as the complexities of going from prop to jet increase by a factor 20. Keeping a simple cockpit in several key areas might help getting into a comfort zone.

@@jacksonteller1337 well if all have a sliding or upward raising canopy that won;t be an issue! i never have liked those side openers!

@@keithmoore5306I don't see an explosive cord running the lenght of the canopy. Standard is to blow the canopy before ejection, and the cord is in the center of the canopy. The T-4 could still blow the canopy before ejection with charges along the hing and the other side. This method would take a few more milliseconds.
I'm no specialist in the T-4, this is just speculation as to whether the T-4 can blow the canopy.

Looks like they may have "borrowed" some ideas from the Dassault-Dornier Alpha-Jet, eh wot?
