Pushing Tesla Autopilot To The Limit! HW3 vs HW4 On A Dark Rainy Night

  • We test out a Model 3 with Hardware 3 and Model Y with Hardware 4 on a dark rainy night on the backroads of Connecticut to determine if there are any differences. In both cases we drove the cars with standard autopilot. Then afterwards, we drove the Model Y with HW4 on the same exact road but this time using the FSD Beta software build. Watch to learn about the differences!

I recently drove at 430am from Lincoln, NE to Colorado using 23 Model 3 RWD and it was dark & rainy. SW Ver 2023.32.9 - Rain was on/off and car drove fine. once rain stopped, driving on somewhat dry road using only autopilot (not enhanced or FSD), I passed Semi's on 3 occasions and the car "Panicked" hit the brakes each time I passed on the left w/Autopilot on. Right when I was about even w/Semi & it's running lights. Scared the crap out of me doing this 3 x in a row, where I just kept my foot near accelerator when passing Semi. Stopped for breakfast in Kearney, & afterward, it never happened again. Reported each time, cameras all looked clean, albeit might have had some moisture from previous rain.

Would be interesting to compare HW3 & 4 with some daytime driving on the same route. To confirm the close to the right issue was weather related or not. Superb test!

I’d like to share an observation. When using Autopilot in the right lane of the Interstate in our 2023 HW4 Model Y and we encounter an on ramp merge lane on the right and the white line on the right drops away, the car drifts to the right, hunting for the far right white line vector. On the nav screen, the line of demarcation on the right gets jiggly, then the car and the nav screen markings reorient as the camera system picks up the angled white merge line as it transitions back into a normal shoulder line. The first time I experienced this, drifting to the right into the merge lane was a WTH moment! My hands were on the wheel, and I took back steering control, which disabled Autopilot. Over time, I’ve learned to apply gentle pressure to minimize the drift, and the car seems to be learning to be less aggressive in this scenario than it was originally. With the camera based vision system, I’m curious to see if Tesla can improve or eliminate this phenomena.

Have you noticed that the side camera feed is dramatically worse at night with the 2023.32 update? They got rid of the yellow cast to the image, but the turn signal camera is almost worthless at night now. It gets colors completely wrong (purple and green everywhere), it's dark and crushed, there's a ton of flickering, and headlight reflections off the road are blown out, so traffic is just an indecipherable blob of light. Given the option, I would absolutely take the old image processing and put up with the yellow cast (which I didn't really mind anyway).

Rented a model three from Hertz for a week for a 1200 mile trip. It did quite well even on dark Kentucky/Tennessee wooded back roads. We did get the right post been camera blocked message quite a bit usually when it was looking off into the woods and there was no houses or lights. So I’m assuming you thought it was blocked.

My2019 M3 awd LR. Avoids semi trucks by staying away from the semi on both left and right passing, in standard Autopilot. I can feel the autopilot move the car away and hug the opposite line perfectly, then when clear the car center’s itself again. Has done that for at least a year. Love your content guys!
P.s. there is a scam on your ad page. Just FYI. Said it was you Kyle, I asked them what you called full acceleration, of course everyone knows you say, FULL SEND! And they said, go fast. And then they stopped communicating. After I told them I knew they were a scam. Lol funny, that was on Out of Spec reviews, not your Chanel Dad😁

Really like how you describe what the feature really is and why it's good if you know how to use it. I've explained this to a bunch of people and I feel like so many of the detractors don't really understand what it is. Would love a summary in words since video isn't my big thing, but I get that that produces less view time for you.

Hi Dave & Kyle. I have been demoing the Y and now the X quite a few times recently, trying to decide what to buy. Despite what Tesla has told me, there appears to be no way to actually turn off Enhanced Autopilot if the car is equipped with FSD. It will not run in Basic Autopilot. You can see this by watching what happens when you use the turn signal. With Basic Autopilot, lane centering turns off. If the car has FSD, even if FSD and Enhanced Autopilot are disabled, the car will auto lane change. So I'm not sure that you were seeing the differences between H3 & H4 as much as the differences in the software for Basic Autopilot and Enhanced/FSD. Also, I saw major phantom braking issues with cars equipped with FSD (even though disabled) while not for cars with only Basic Autopilot. One other unusual item was FSD will not let the car run in the right lane on the freeway. I usually demo overnight so I can test without much traffic. I could use the turn signal to get to the right lane, but after just a few seconds the car would move back one lane with the message "changing lanes to avoid the right lane" or something to that affect. In Utah, that is technically illegal. Your are supposed to be in the right most lane unless passing another vehicle.

I would have wiped dirty road water off each cam before each run. By the time FSD was run, cams would not be as good as first runs with cleaner cams. As FYI, I find two RainX applications on each cam window help keep dirty rain water or clean rain water clear off the cam (rear), and cam windows (rest of cams). Works better in these conditions, or when rain stops-road still wet throwing up dirty spray and sun is back out.
“Sweat the detail, nothing is routine” is one of my mottos I go by. Which will trigger handling the same level condition of the cams for each run. Still, this was interesting video. Thank you.

There is a big change between my new Model X and my previous 3 and Y. The pillar cameras of the 3 and Y frequently quit working. The X has never had a problem. I recall reading somewhere that the Hardware 4 pillar cameras have heaters to prevent fogging during cold weather. Perhaps that explains the difference?

Guys, is "vision based" in this context (from Tesla) using only visible light spectrum as inputs? Or, are they also measuring other segments of the EMS?

    Hi guys!
Interesting video and thanks for creating it.
But honestly, the yellow lines are very well visible and no car in front of you. Hence the rain does not have much impact and the camera can easily see the yellow lines.
Do the same at 90miles/hour on a curvy motorway in darkness and more heavy rain with a car in front of you and spray from the vehicle in front which causes that only the rough outlines and faded lights are visible of that car and with much less visible lines (like just one line which is not very well any more).
I would be seriously interested whether it then still works over many many miles and keeps a stable distance to the car in front without any warnings or deactivations.
That is what is needed and that shall be the benchmark as there are cars on the marked with assistance systems that can handle such situations.
    I haven't seen such a test yet.

If ur in an area where it is in total darkness this can set the alert off because the cameras cannot tell the difference between blocked and dark once u turn the lights on that may cancel the alert
If the side pillar cameras have slight condensation this may trigger the alert
Or if the cameras are dirty

You are comparing HW3 vs HW4 but the most important thing is what software version are you running on each car? That is where the differences are but you didn’t mention ??? What’s the point then if they are on different versions? I have two MY’s, both HW4 on different versions and one is a teenage driver and the other is the adult in the room. (And we traded HW3 Y’s for the HW4’s, not just for that reason though). Just saying…

@@VxO4fame Not at the same time. I have two Y’s and they are months apart on the version they are on. So very possible that any two cars are not on equivalent versions at any given time.

The section of road they put those two cars through is an extreme case. Not one you would generally use autopilot on. Where you would use autopilot - on the freeway - it works just fine, even in extreme weather. I have probably 200k miles across five teslas of driving and I have never had it act dangerous on autopilot, I trust it almost entirely. Full self driving, however, is another story.
