Mantis shrimp are wicked! I used to work at a bait shop, and have seen the larger ones split buckets, fingernails, and skin.
I had one about 8 inches long split my finger wide open. 6 stitches. The one that got me had these hammer like front legs that busted my finger open. Didnt cut it it busted it . Hurt like hell and I just about stomped a hole in the floor of the boat killing the damn thing.

mantis shrimp are known as thumbspitters. they have a striker in their mouth that can crack even shells. they are cool to have in saltwater aquariums, but you can't put them in glass aquariums, because they have been know to crack the glass. they will certainly split your thumb if you have your hand in the wrong place in the aquarium.
lemon rigs good for night time fishing aswell… can put the little glow sticks in them and it will stay lit all night

In SoCal, Mantis Shrimp are referred to as "thumb-splitters". They are rather large and look like small Pacific lobsters which are just a tail and to my mind one of the best tasting lobster, very sweet. The Mantis have a spring loaded claw that moves so fast you can't see it, next thing you know you have a deep gash on your thumb that requires immediate attention.

It's an empty container of the lemon or lime juice, tied on the line to act as a bobber or float to keep the bait off the bottom.
As far as how to rig it, the thumbnail gives you a good idea but you could just tie it on the line.

yeah. can set your leaders to the depth you want.. say you have two ft leaders on both sides then your bait will sit at 4tf down. easier than casting a 4 ft leader. or 8ft leader on a straight line. (if that makes any sense)

That rig is a very very old technique. My dad knew of and old woman that would fish one of the parks on Ocean Drive with that rig. Any weather, any season she caught fish.

If you wanna be smart, drill a small hole through the green cap to tie in your line, but break off the flip cap part, fill the container with dead shrimp or small pieces of cut bait...when the container hits the water it will start to admit all of the smells from the bait inside the container through the opening where you broke off the flip cap....it will act like a homemade chum bucket that you cast out into the water. It will make for some crazy schooling to gather around your hooked bait.

If you hook the shrimp about half an inch above the tail it stays alive longer and makes more noise than if you hook it through the head.
Lately I’ve been having the most luck fishing the surf side of the Port A jetties. Last trip I caught two small shark and the trip before that I got 2 mid to upper slot reds and one huge bull, easily my PB, that my buddy dropped while trying to land it for me. Needless to say I was extremely bummed...
