ik this video was made about 4 years ago, but i would love to see the next step from this video to where we got hid streetlights ranging from mercury vapor to sodium to metal halide!
I remember using Carbon Arc Spotlights in the Theater when I was in High School, 71-73. They did change them to 1500 watt incandescent ones shortly thereafter. They were in use for about 15 years in the Auditorium. They were heavy, large and awkward to use. And, and you mentioned, very noisy, especially with the fan on the ventilation that was necessary to prevent carbon monoxide build up in the projection room.

There's one that always at the front of the Baton Rouge Mardi Gras parades. It's close to six foot in diameter. You can see the smoke created from the arc. When you see the light beam in the sky, the parade is on it's way ! You can see it from miles away.
Hey as a fellow stage hand for stage crew in high school. I've heard about the old lighting setups at at the earlier years before I got there for quite a while that is. I don't know if they had carpal Darkfall spots but they may very well have. The main things that I heard of there that were carbon Arc was the projection system they had to Tandem carbon Arc projectors in the projection booth. That was also later converted to a lighting as well sometimes we'd be doing things from up there but generally we be running riding from in front of the stage but we had the capability of doing it from either or. The interesting thing is from what I understand is when they went from one technology of projection to another is it was straight to Xenon lamp based projectors. Two of them still! This of course was 16 mm film! Even onstage occasionally we would still run 16 mm but not very often at all in modern times. Generally when we would run 16mm film it would be somebody renting the auditorium and just showing movies essentially using our Auditorium as a theater for whatever film they're showing. Most of the time if we did projection it would be video projectors back then either laser disc or VHS generally we have a few other formats here and there but primarily. I think I only remember using videotape once we had the capability for just about anything that was around in those days at that school which was pretty cool. Was one of those students that didn't really have to be in class all the time! And still was present without being present and allowed to be so! There's things I could do that would be more of an educational value while still being able to just skip the stuff that was not necessary that I was there. Of all the stuff I was doing it was of technical nature Documentaries and more so I was actually seeing a lot of media and other doing other things in my downtime as I called it! Some of this was put toward work for stage crew as well as needed might as well! Whether it's working on getting equipment in better shape or more or things like the set dressing and more even sometimes just maintaining facilities that took enough as it was! In the most liberal sweat since I was the stage electrician as well even though I was not certified I was authorized to electrical work when and where needed at school not just stage! Trying to show you my skill level even back then and yes I casually didn't even moonline on maintenance if need be and much much more seems like there were days at school all I was doing was repair work honestly that sometimes happenend! People soon learned if I got called to the office it wasn't something I did wrong Bob is needed for something else outsid usual school activities one could say! Once. Called to try to connect the portable compressor to the pneumatically controlled heating system yep occasionally even Plumbing in HVAC related even the principal said that I probably had more potential in experience in one finger than most of the people that would have ever gone to that school seriously that's not something you here everyday and yes I had job offers when high school came to an end from the school themselves complete with potentially on the job training and possibly further education and even certification if it worked out in other words from a normal high school basically becoming a personal trade school which is just cool for someone like me. The odd thing is that place is quite old I don't even know how far back it goes probably earlier than the 50s at least some portions of the place. But, there were some places in there that we're kind of weird no one really knows what it was but yeah something going on some people theorize civil defense but no one really knows. There were civil defense signs on some doors but the thing is they did not lead to a bunker or the underground shelter which was actually the basement of the place. Long mutt look like reinforced stairways upwards to some of the other parts of the building. As well as there were some other things not sure if this is related or not but it was believed that was some sort of optical communication system do silver louvers in old windows high powered colored lights with shutters of some sort could be shown as well as some sort of optical receiver as well. It's so obscure no one has any clue what it was used for also nowhere near water so this was not some sort of lighthouse related or some sort of Aid to navigation! Most of the equipment was still there. One of the few people that I had ever seen it at least students of all the word equipment they were thinking I might know what through this is why I invited to take a look at this sometimes! Same with very very deep below the school in what we called the catacombs that will do my very much off-limits. It was like a whole underground city almost complete with its own power source?? They were thinking it might have had something to do if possibly with the trolleys but everything was wrong for that including the voltages and everything and yes this is an old DC system! And we had this particular problem of the lines blinking in the area in the school and in the vicinity turns out this was when certain equipment down there with starting up but no one knows what any of this Rand just it was still active after all these years and maintained with some Modern Parts but mostly the stuff that look like it had been obviously a hundred years ago sort of kind of thing. We are talking about for every converters big ones and Mercury Arc tungsten argon as well. Very weird multiple voltages and more we are talkin thousands upon thousands of amps of current. Also there was electrically operated cargo / maintenance Railway down the middle of these 4 doors beneath the schools no one knows just what everything is going on but something is it was in use as well everyone's while you'll hear rumbling of something like railroad tracks except very very slight even though during the day. The weird thing is I'm all the doors that would have opened it into the school property only could be open from the outside not from inside of school which is just strange. The locks on some of these things made a prison or jail lock look like a toy. Some people think that this was something to do with some government project but hard to say
A theater I've done work for use a carbon arc lamp for one of the spot lights. That thing was fun to operate. Now the only arc lamp I get to play with is HMI's.
Arc lamps were also used in searchlights on land and sea on ships during world war 2. The british used them during the blitz in the battle of Britain to search for enemy plans in the sky's at night. Arc light was also used in cinema film projectors from the 1930s to the 2000s.⚡⚡⚡💡💡💡💡
One problem: when you mention that carbon arc lamps had a short lifespan, one is led to believe that the entire massive thing needed replacement in a matter of hours. That's definitely not the case - the carbon electrodes had to be replaced, but the lamp could stay there and work for years, as long as someone bothered to replace them. That's the whole point of the high maintenance issue.

we still have arc lights at my highschool to iluminate the football fields, they also have drag weights to automaticly feed the carbon rods, ive only seen the rods being replaced once but from what i saw each lamp used two 4 inch thick cartridges and each lamp lasted around 500 hours running on 110v
one could argue arc lamps were the most important light source ever invented, as not only did they push for the development of dynamo's and generators needed for power transmission, but they would also be the building blocks for many types widely used today (although being challenged by LED) Fluorescent and neon, mercury vapor, metal halide, high pressure sodium, low pressure sodium, xenon car headlamps, HMI and Xenon short arc lamps used in projectors and spot lights for movie production, all of these lamp types use an electric arc.
Greenfield Village should have the "Moonlight" tower of 6 arc lights, but downscale it and dimmer lights. Greenfield Village is in Dearborn Michigan. There are 23 arc lights in Armington & Simms Machine Shop in Greenfield Village.

Yes, there are many of the old General Electric searchlights still operable today. Arc lighting was also used up to the 1980’s for movie projectors and theatrical spotlights. These were mostly replaces by Xenon lamps, which are an arc lamp sealed in a glass envelope filled with Xenon gas.
If I'm not mistaken, they did not emit Carbon Dioxide, but Ozone. Pretty great video. I'm a real fan of the look of arc lamps, so much so I made a nice hanging incandescent lamp with a nice orb. A bit of a reference to the ceiling mounted arc lamps, much safer too.
Surprised you did not mention the use of carbon arc for searchlights for anti aircraft use, military lighting as well as advertising. The later were very popular thru the 1980’s. Rarer not day I’m sure they are still around

I would classify metal halide lighting under the category of High Intensity Discharge. Some similarities between MH and carbon arc, but ultimately a far more advanced technology.
Carbon arc lamps were used extensively INSIDE people’s homes, business, & industry for illumination. There is absolutely no historical anecdotes that says anything to support this at all. Where this rumor came up is nonsense. Most personal homes used cheaper sources of light because of the cost associated with arc lamps. During this time simple carbon filament bulbs worked fine for home illumination. There was no need for pure white light. Many wealthy homes did however feature extremely ornate “parlor” arc lamps to show off their cutting edge tastes & ability to spend the thousands needed to purchase the technology.
Well, if you only want to cover things that get used, pretty soon that will be really simple. But you should be warned, *everyone* has a phone and knows how to use the flashlight.

Arc lamps put out some serious UV. Like welding, you will get sunburned welding in short sleeve with no sunscreen. I always wear sunscreen.

A theater I've done work for use a carbon arc lamp for one of the spot lights. That thing was fun to operate. Now the only arc lamp I get to play with is HMI's.

Correct ozone all electrical arcs do in an oxygen atmospher, including lighting.

Metalarc bulbs use a arc to create light and still used but led is causing them be phased out since they energy hungry compared to led
