  • Hi guys, I hope you find my experiences as a trainee pwp helpful. There were a few things that came to me after filming which are mentioned below. Please comment if you'd like to know about anything thats not covered or if you're unsure about anything. Enjoy!
    *The POSITIVES!
Reviewing the video made me think that I was being a bit of a negative Nancy in this video so I thought i'd bullet point a few positive points on the course:
    1. you have a LOT of support from your service supervisors (you get two) plus your manager, plus your university tutor and lecturers. Your supervisors are also people who have undertaken pwp training so they will know how to help you pass the course.
    2. In lectures you also get qualified pwps attending to shadow your work and role plays and give you feedback on the spot. If thats something you dont get then ask for it. Its very helpful and fun!
    3. As a student you will have access to student support services where they can review your assignments and work before you submit.
    4. You have each other (peers) for support to practice role plays and discuss points for your assignments. Don't isolate yourself.
    5. Everyone is in the same boat. It is likely that you as a cohort will undergo difficulties in understanding certain things together. No question is a silly question so make sure you ask about whatever you are unsure of.
    6. As a student, there will be student benefits with socialising, shopping discounts etc. Spend your time wisely on your wellbeing so you can have some amazing memories to reflect on.
    7. Becoming a trainee after some time away from academic studies? You wont be the only one. There were people around the age of 40 and 50 on my course who were worried about this. It's all about sticking to the teaching, researching and reading and being a part of peer groups that you can gel with.
    8. If you do find it difficult the course will allow you to put in for an EC request (if applicable) or defer from the curse until you're ready to continue

also I'm so glad I found your channel! this is so helpful and I really like your outlook on education & mental health I totally agree about the way university works it's sad it kind of takes away some sort of freedom of speech & creativity from you but it does get you the higher salary in the long run so it is worth it I think, it would be great if you made just general videos on MH and your opinions on certain things think that would be interesting to watch :)

Great stuff thanks for all your content. Quick inquiry please, im very much interested in this kind of work... i have about 3 years experience working as a support worker on a mental health ward, but no psychology related qualifications.
I am contemplating doing an MSc in psychology (my prior degree is an unrealted subject but this would be conversion course).
But from what I've heard I would ideally need at least an undergrad degree in psychology in order to apply for a trainee pwp role. Are there any ways for me to get into a trainee pwp positiion, or any similar roles you would suggest ?
Thanks again, fantastic and very informative videos.

I'm going to be moving down south to try for the Uni's down there after I finish my dissertation. Do you think I should be doing anything else before then that will improve my chances of being selected?

  • @xzclaire

It would be great if you could make a video about what experience you need to get on the course, I was wondering what your course is actually called? I don't really understand which one to go for as I've seen some called Low intensity psych therapies then advanced mental health therapies and then just CBT therapy masters it's all so confusing! also on your placement is it solely based on CBT therapy overall? as I do like CBT but I find counselling & talking about emotions/past traumas etc just as important as changing the way you think and behave in your life so not sure if I would like the job if I'm telling people to just change how they think? also do you apply through university's then or did you look for the job posts looking for trainees? is the only difference that the course may be paid for by the organisation if they are going to keep you on as a practitioner? (sorry for mass amount of questions haha I'm really interested in the role but so overwhelmed I've just completed my psych degree so just trying to figure out my life from here on out!)

Thanks for your comment! 45 minutes isn't enough to go through all the details of a persons life however as a PWP we aren't looking at the entire life - we are looking more at their current problem. That being said, I think many current problems can be as a result of difficulties in the past which would have to be assessed in order to make an accurate decision for interventions. Lottttts of grey areas and it isn't as black and white.

Hi Fatema. Are you happy about the career and $$ progression? I know that the trainee pays a band 4 salary ( which is ok for a trainee, but not much after taxes deductions) so I was wondering if talking about wages and how it takes to get a band 5... if you think it worth the work
    Thanks

    • @thepsychologycareersservice
      @thepsychologycareersservice  4 года назад +2

Hi! working in the nhs is on the agenda for change pay scale so you have to start at band 4 and then go up to a band 5. A lot of people would say the pay isnt enough for the job we do, but i think that's probs the nhs in general and more of a pay issue on a bigger scale. I guess you have to think about your career route, your values and what serves you best for the life you want to live.
