U.S. Immigration Policy and the Violation of Human Rights | Michelle Brané | TEDxBerkeley

  • As border stops have increased and the U.S. quietly steps up restrictionist immigration policies, the plight of refugees, many of whom are women and children, is only worsening. Despite the clarity of international law regarding the acceptance of refugees, many of whom are fleeing political instability and violence in Central America, the United States refuses to allow these vulnerable populations into the country. As Michelle Brané argues, it doesn’t have to be this way.
A lawyer by training, Michelle Brané has dedicated her life to serving some of the world’s most vulnerable populations. The Director of the Migrant Rights and Justice Program at the Women’s Refugee Commission has over 25 years of experience advocating for the critical needs of women, children and other vulnerable migrant populations in the U.S. As one of the nation’s foremost experts on immigration detention and reform, she has testified before Congress, appeared frequently in various media outlets, and frequently presented at conferences and international bodies, including the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in Geneva. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    That was so heart warming
It makes me so sad to think that people can just take away their children and separate families, just because of what they look like and where they come from 😢❤️❤️❤️
God bless all of the families that have been separated 😔❤️

Crazy, when you cross the border illegally it's called a crime, you separate the parent when they get a DUI with kid in car. Today now that borders are open. 80k plus kids are missing from immigration system. That's because illegals used unaccompanied children to get across then got rid of them. From separating kids to verify relationships to now 80k plus kids just gone now. Why aren't the same people who were crying then saying anything now. This was bullshiiii to make Trump look bad. Only to find out he was right all along. 80k missing kids is all on the people who were brain dead and believed the media.

Yes do it legally. But they need the opportunity to do so.
If they need protection, the defense of those in danger should be taken seriously.
They want benefit of different land, different government. They do need the opportunity to take benefits of said government legally.

I want to know why are us citizens (white conservatives) so scared of Latinx immigrants coming to America as refugees or coming here to work and live a life in America. America is still such a new country and we have so much to offer people who are willing and wanting to make a new secure life for themselves… why dont we have more systems in place to set these people up with opportunities to live here comfortably and independently??

You have to ask that question? Clearly you are not familiar with the crime rates. Why should our nation be a flop house for fentanyl runners, drug dealers, rapists, narcos, and abusers of women. They have ruined their countries. They will ruin ours. Why should schools drop Honors classes to pay for ESL classes? Why should US taxpayers provide WIC and food stamps for children whose parents are illegal but have citizenship bc they dropped these babies here. These baby citizens will never hear English spoken in the home. If we need more people and that's a big if, let us have high IQ people who will speak English and not bring crime.

After 15 minutes in the country, they will get in your face and tell you that they are just as American as you. Mexicans have a saying: My stomach is in the US, but my heart is in Mexico.". I seriously do not think your one example represents the majority but minority. You know because we do have laws for those seeking political asylum and in fear of their life.
Then, when talking about immigration for asylum the over whelming majority is not just going to the next country for the asylum they need, refering to those who actually need it. These people are not just stopping at the first country they come to, one that has the same language and simular culture. But, will go through several. Countries to get here.
I seriously doubt your statistics are correct. 99.8 is such a fake number. There is no way you can support it. Reason I am saying so is that I have taught in one of the largest school districts in the country. For a couple of weeks there was a rumor that ICE was going to show up and collect those students who were not there legally. Result? Classes I was teaching, which normally had about 35 students a class, were almost completely vacant. Yes, almost empty for those 2 weeks. I went from teaching classes with about 35 students per a class, give or take, to 1-2 students per a class. That means 5.71-2.85% of the classes and school were there legally. The rest were not. Meaning 94.29- 97.5% of the classes, the school were there illegally. So, basically the 2-5% of the population was paying for the education of 98-95 percent of the educational population. Wea had become no longer the majority but now are aliens in our own country. What is wrong with this picture?
In tip of that I can tell you I have actually experanced going to large chain, well known national chain store and been refused service because I did not speak spanish. Agsin the primary language taught in our education system is not good enough?
Then when not teaching and looking for work. I had experance people who did not have education in the fields I was looking for, which I did have a degree in, were being hired over me. Simply put, there are so many immagrents in the area, one of the largest cities in the U.S. where the primary job requirement was to speak a foreign language, Spanish, over having an actual degree in that field. This coming from someone, me, who is also from a Spanish haratage. But, because I speak the primary language spoke in the country and educational system , I am far less qualified. What is wrong with this picture? So, we have such a great influx that in a sence we are not even citizens in our own country.
I think we all are here to want to help others.Ameruca us known for its charity, far greater than any other country in the world, and very likely more than all other countries added in the world.
Also conservative are actually well documented to also for giving way more than liberals for charity as well. Yet, the general though is the liberal agenda, who is though to voices more charity is actually in action the uncharable groups. The point is Americans should not be 2nd class citizens in their own country. And, if we want to be a greater source of assisting others it is the Conservative approach which works best.

You can question and doubt, but she is the EXPERT on this and has been doing it for over 25 years. How long have you been doing it?
Her statistics are fact, not opinion. Without immigrants doing the work that others won't this nation would not be as "great" as you think. Americans are the people who were born here thousands of years ago, long before your or my ancestors came here to kill them and steal THEIR land and resources.
If you want to talk history, do it right and stop acting like we white people were INTENDED to be here. We weren't. We were invading conquerors and theives who stole what we wanted, murdered or enslaved those we felt were "below" us and brought our own ridiculous "moral standards" to a country that was doing just fine before WE showed up.
We are the very people who destroyed this country by our own immigration here. So you can just shut up about your conservative approach to this. All that has ever done is lead to more and more violence against other human beings. Your facts are skewed all the way around.

The USA welfare / freebie store is closed. We don't need any more people who can't take care of themselves when we as a nation are not taking care of our own homeless women children men and veterans. There comes a point of which you have to say we can't do anymore. We still take in 1 million legal people per year we can't take in the whole world.
