They had the right key but due to a security feature on the locks if turned the wrong way the lock would disable itself. They turned it the wrong way. You can still see the marks on the floor of the cells where the army dropped Grenades in now. Awesome place
They found a picture of the brothers and Morris is unknown but they wrote a letter to the warden after the escape witch said “ha ha we made it” sign by there initials
Stroud was housed in D block, solitary confinement. When the marines were launching grenades into the housing area, because the authorities thought that was where the escapees were. I believe he was able to get them to stop with the bombardment due to the fact it was unnecessary. The escapees were not in D block, so they were just endangering the lives of innocent inmates.

They did make it and after Frank and John past away Clarence tried turning himself in so that he could get the medical help he needed. He died from cancer before he could get the help. He moved to California in I think it was 2006 and remained there until his death

2 survived foe sure. Their family has a documentary about it. They spent the rest of their lives in Brazil. They have pictures of them in the 70's in Brazil.

There was once another prison on Deer Island in Boston Harbor in Massachusetts and Mark Wahlberg actually served time there for a misdemeanor in the early 80s. The buildings are still there but have been converted into a waste water treatment facility.

I grew up in the Bay Area, Palo Alto, and every person I ever knew had been there, there was even a school field trip in 5th grade to visit it! My mother was horrified, she believed it had seriously negative energy and was dangerous for young people to be exposed to. I did not want to go anyway, so I've never seen it either.
@@christineparis5607 I have been a few times. It isn't "Creepy"... it's educational. You get to hear stories of the people who were in there. Many of them were in prison for things that you'd barely get a slap on the wrist for in today's times. If you get an opportunity to go, I highly recommend it. I've been a few times. I learn something new each visit. I've also taken my kids a couple times (they are NOW 13 and 10).

Im an Illinois resident(cant wait to leave). Luckily my friend lived in Alameda. Got to visit Alcatraz in 97. Shortly after the movie "The Rock" came out. I really had a great time visiting. Very powerful feeling, walking around with all of the history there. Very grateful to have had the chance to visit. I recommend it.
True Story about when I went to Alcatraz: Within the first few minutes on the boat to the island I got seasick making the trip quite miserable, We got in trouble because we sat on a ledge were it was very "unstable", my little sister wanted to leave since the second we got their (claiming she was scared) 😒😝 and we missed the boat back and we were stuck at the island for another hour and a half. 😅😆🤣😰
I visited Alcatraz and did the tour a few years before it was closed to the public. I made sure to hang back from the crowded tour, so I could get a feel and look on my own. There definitely was permeated feel of depression. Some areas I almost cried. Other areas felt scary, violent. It was cold, and hard. I can’t imagine how bad it was for inmates! Not that the inmates didn’t deserve to be there, but we all know even today plenty of innocent people get convicted and go to prison! I wonder how many innocent spent time there, like Shawshank Redemption! Compared to modern prisons, todays inmates have it easy!
