I can't believe you did not read the part with the table and the chairs...
‘So, this,’ the Lion said, gesturing to the long table. ‘This surprises me. A work of emotion, not logic.’
The light of the late afternoon, discoloured by the storm, flooded the chamber through high windows. A long table, carved from stone, dominated the length of the room. Around it were twenty-one chairs, all built for the scale of a primarch. Each one was cut from the same mountain granite as the table. The chair backs were draped with banners. The great seat, at the head of the long table was draped with the pennant of Terra. Two of the other pennants were plain and made of bleached, un-dyed cloth. The other eighteen were the banners of the Legiones Astartes.
‘You did this?’ The Lion asked.
‘Are you mocking it?’ asked Guilliman.
The Lion shook his head. ‘It moves me. You still believe in a day when all of us, all of us, can sit at a table with our father, as equals, and talk of the matters of empire.’
    ‘All of us,’ Guilliman nodded.
‘You made this room in anticipation of that?’
‘Yes, many years ago. Does that make me sentimental?’ asked Guilliman.
‘No, brother,’ said the Lion. ‘It shows you possess a soul.’
He set his hands on the back of one of the chairs bearing an un-dyed banner and leaned. ‘Two will never come,’ he said.
‘Yet their absence must be marked,’ replied Guilliman. ‘Places must be left for them. That is simply honour.’
The Lion straightened up, and slowly pointed, in turn, at the banners of Horus, Magnus, Perturabo, Mortarion, Curze, Angron, Alpharius, Lorgar and Fulgrim. ‘Others will never take their seats, unless as conquerors,’ he said.
‘I know,’ said Guilliman. ‘Yet their places must be kept. I believe in the Imperium… In the continuity of the Imperium.’
    ‘That it will endure?’
‘That it must endure. That we must make it endure.’

That is a great scene. I feel the Lion has been written very differently from book to book. This was my favorite portrayal of him. I love that he embraced Robby. It contributes to the idea that the Lion may be socially awkward, but he is not a machine. He cares for others, at least some others, but is not sure how to interact with people. Other depictions of him, I think, go too far into uncaring machine territory. I found the description of him as not understanding his underlings or their capabilities hard to swallow. He almost killed Sanguinius on Davin, lied like crazy to everyone hes entire life, treated hes foster father like garbage after discovery by Emperor which led to destruction of Caliban, vendetta against Conrad Kurze through Ultramar coused countless millions of dead.
Simply put it the only reason Lion didn't followed Horus is that he was TO PROUD and FULL OF HIMSELF and resented Warmaster title not being given to him the most of all Primarchs.

The lion didint care much about being war master he only cares to serve the imperium its as simple as that. Hell he even kept kurze alive for the emperors sake. Had the dark angels and the Lion joined horus I belive the imperium would have lost the heresy completely, the lion has a right to be arrogant he is the eldest brother and his legion expertise , and actions were the back bone of the imperiums victory and thats a fact. Also he did not treat his foster father like garbage , infact its quite the opposite. Luther took the time to contemplate letting a nuclear device go off and kill the lion out of jealousy. Now, if any other primarch had found out they would have killed luther on the spot; but what did the lion do? I am a First Legion guy. The Lion all the way.
I have the audio of this book and this is my favorite part to replay. The meeting tells you SO much about the two primarchs.
Roboute felt that he needed to justify himself to the Lion, that he was overshadowed by him.
The Lion had legitimate affection for Guilliman, but was willing to "burn and splinter Macragge" if necessary.
The Lion did not ever build HIS own empire, it was all for his father. Guilliman saw the 500 worlds as his own, an issue of vanity.
I like Roboute, but the Lion is my guy.

    • @Catonzo
      @Catonzo 4 года назад +3

There's so much of WH40k (or 30k as it would be) that I do not know and probably even more things I have misunderstood; however didn't Guilliman practically crown Sanguinius as the rightful heir of Imperium Secundus? That particular picture used where he holds Sanguinius' hand raised with his own. If I am right about how I understand that one, this also means he considers Sanguinius as the rightful heir of ALL of the Imperium should something happen to their father. Macragge is under Guilliman's rule, but he is no king/emperor. He is a General or Lord. A Primarch. Second only to the Emperor of Mankind OR the Warmaster who acts in his stead. I don't think Guilliman displays a whole lot of vanity in the ways of owning his own worlds. All of it belongs to the Emperor.

    • @kingbaldwiniv5409
      @kingbaldwiniv5409 4 года назад +11

@@Catonzo, Guilliman and the Lion both were, in the absence of their father, willing to settle on Sanguinius as a trustworthy compromise.
In this very book, Guilliman says that it was HIS empire, the 500 worlds, though he would never say it out loud.
Besides, with the Lion present, who Guilliman admits to feeling overshadowed by, he couldn't take the crown of the Emperor himself but he was willing to give it to the Lion until a 3rd, more preferrable option appeared.
Thing that makes it vanity is that even when he had agreed to grant the throne of Imperium Secundus to Sanguinius, he kept assuming back authority. Sanguinius had to correct him a number of times. In one such outburst, he broke the Lionsword.
I think that the case is made fairly well between The Unremembered Empire, Angels of Caliban, and Pharos. I think that Guilliman is both good and noble, but he is not perfect. He becomes attached to his creations, positions, and institutions.
David Annandale points this out well in Guilliman's primarch novel.

The First. So precise that they can make the master of the Ultramarines envious. Think about that. The Ultramarines, held up as the paragon of all things Space Marine, get out Space Marined.
Even over Sanguinious, Guilliman looks up to Lion. Adds more to the speculation that The Lion may have been named warmaster, had he been found before Horus.
But we also see a bit of Lion's flaw. He shows respect for Guilliman by showing perfection. He probably would have done the same, had he visited Fulgrim. But while Guilliman showed admiration, bordering on envy, Fulgrim would have showed envy, bordering on rage.
But this is also a wiser Lion. One who had started to understand betrayal, and started to prepare for the unexpected. He is absolutely correct to have the legion on standby. To keep Curze a secret. This is a Lion who follows the "trust, but verify" doctrine.
I sincerely hope Lion is the next to return to 40k. I think it creates interesting interplay. A chapter that has some suspicion around them, led by someone Guilliman respects more than anyone other than The Emperor. But The Lion has been burned by betrayal. How much can Johnson allow himself to trust his brother? Will doubtful 40k Guilliman become overly deferential to the one loyalist primarch he truly feels is beyond him? Will Lion be wise enough to realize that Guilliman covers some of his own weaknesses?

The Lions biggest flaw is the fact he just doesn't really that good at interacting or judging other people, this flaw led to the Dark Angels Legion being torn in half because the Lion banished Luther back to Caliban.
This flaw is highlighted in one perticular scene in the Fallen Angels book where a Dark Angel called Namiel comes to the realisation that it was actually Luther who was the one who united the Knightly Orders on Caliban after having doubts about the Lion when the Lion asked for his opinion on the Imperial Govenor and Mechanicum reprisentive of the planet Diamat.

Horus Pre-Quad-Chaos-God-Empowering would probably have been beaten by the Lion and his Legion in an all out war, possibly even easily, but where the Lion was amazing in one arena (war/fighting) he was woefully lacking in loads of other areas that are necessary for rule and empire building. The Lion had no charisma, relatively no ability to bring a world into the Imperium unless it was with war, he had a great amount of pride as well, and socially was inept when compared with others like Horus, Guilliman, and Sanguinius. The Lion could probably take them all in a war, but the Emperor wasn't looking for a scorched earth plan for the galaxy. He wanted unity. He ultimately wanted peace. He wanted worlds to willingly submit to the Imperium without conquering them, but war would suffice if they refused. Now if the Warmaster was just the one in control of the military he would easily be the best choice. If they divided the tasks among the Primarchs, the Lion's task would be head general. Sanguinius could have been the "Leader", the Lion could conquer for the Imperium, Guilliman could build/ be in charge of diplomacy, and Dorn could defend it. As it was the Warmaster was in charge under the Emperor so he kinda had all those parts to himself and only having one out of four necessary skills (maybe two because the Lion could defend via slaughtering any attackers), is not a good enough skill ratio for the presiding ruler of Primarchs.

@@danceswithgerbals1 Lion had no charisma, we are talking about a primarch here, chap.
I agree on the other points though. That being said Lion was not Angron and his World Eaters. Even if he secured a planet through conquest he wouldn't have done it in a way that it'd leave it in ruin. He was smarter than that.

He was now only a few paces away. The lion stopped short and removed his helm. He watches as his brother did the same, pulling the blue helmet of the ultramarines tight to his side. He bowed his head in acknowledgment as he closed the final few paces between them. There could be no doubt, this was his brother. The Lion could now see the heaviness in his face and eyes. Weariness? Perhaps. This new imperium they have both found themselves thrust into was indeed burdensome place. Or was it weariness of the lion himself. Why him. Why this brother and not another? Why the Lion, the one whom was banished for his secrets.
He shook the notion from his mind. They were nearly face to face now, and as ElJhonson prepared to speak, his words became stuck in his throat, he felt a pain in his chest.
The pain of regret. The pain of failure. The pain of bonds broken that had not yet been mended. The lion stopped short of his brother. He could see the sadness in Roboute's eyes, but also the fire that only the eyes of a primarch could hold. His mind was now racing, desperately searching for the right words to say, he had never been as good a statesman as his brother for whom these things seem to flow naturally. He feigned a cough as if clearing his throat, now barely holding his classic stoic and aloof gaze that had served him all his life.
    And then it happend.
The great winged helm he held at his waist was now tumbling in slow motion Before him. His brother, without a word or sound, and without even the Lions exemplary reflexes allowed to react, embraced him with such force that this time it was the Lions helm that was dislodged from his grip.
He winced at first at the sounds of his helmet rolling and clanking off the ceremite floor, but the strength of the embrace he now found himself in said everything that was needed to be said between them. Relief washed over him, and the Lion replied with an embrace of his own. One befitting a Lion of the first. And as they each pulled back Guiliman smiled for the first time since their eyes met. He looked down at the Lions helmet and bent over to pick it up. As he rose to hand it back to his brother so spoke for the first time. "Your getting slow old man." Said Guilliman with a smirk. The lion roared in laughter, the memory of their last meeting brushing his mind. "Perhaps I am, " he let his response hang..." but I'm still faster than Angron."
Robute's face darkened if only for a moment at the mention of his traitorous brothers foul name. Then placing a hand on the Lions shoulder he said " Now that brother, is a story I must hear."

"mom,dad....if you were both here....youd be wanting me to relax as i cried myself to sleep every night, wouldnt you...funny... now that i think of it."
as the sword of unity placed a caring hand upon it,hed get up and mourn, only to see in the distance, the feathers of a hawk, and a raven. on the ground. the feathers of both birds in the area gave guilaman flashbacks,to that of corvus and sanguinius, brothers he, albeit not got along with usualy, were his dauntless few, his trusted and those he worked well with.
"this must be what it is like for you, isnt it....being broken, nearly alone.... unable to save anyone. and that's what you both felt. pain, sorrow, lonelyness."
drawing his gladius incandel, with one motion, the feathers would be sent on there way via the wind
"sanguinius,corvus... whereever you may be are my brothers....i only hope it is a place better then here."
in the warp, the sanguinor looked out to the chaos drenched hellscape, and to the star child. the sanguinor spoke.
"tell me, father. do you know if we may ever retake the galaxy and save it again?"
the star child shook his head
"i know not. but i have faith in guilaman. i only hope his will can survive long enough to see his brothers again. the lion especially"
    "would omegon even join guilaman?"

The Lion is like any older brother. He keeps his eyes and heart open to his younger sibling. He loves his brother deeply but wouldn’t hesitate for a second to put him in his place. If you’re an older brother you understand why that is. And if you’ve ever watched a younger sibling fall to their own vice you know his pain as well. On both these levels I relate to the Lion. And it’s a strange feeling to hear the perspective of a younger siblings thoughts about his older brother. The subtle child like adoration and jealousy is sweet and yet so sad. You can feel love between them and yet this unspoken suspicion. The heresy already taking its toll on them both and you can already see where this will eventually lead in the far future when they reunite. Guillimans vulnerabilities marked by his humane side now amplified by the massive losses suffered by the imperium as well as his revelation of the emperor’s true feelings regarding his children have left him doubting all he’s ever believed. The lion, having been betrayed by his closest friends in his own legion is now colder and even more machine like in his demeanor. More pragmatic than warm. So divorced from his emotions that he would cut Guilliman down without so much as a tear in his eye if he suspected him of anything. The truth of the emperor broke Guillimans heart. The truth of the emperor was always known by El Johnson as he has always known his purpose.
It’s a beautiful moment to see here and it’s well read by you sir. It brought a tear to my eye as it made me remember my sibling and me as well. A time before all the pain when I could embrace them and they looked to me for guidance. The story itself is a fine work but the emotion and moment of remembrance was worth it’s weight in gold. Thank you for that.

    Lord Rho.
First off, let me say that Dan Abnett is one of my favored authors of 40K stories. Another is Sandy Mitchell, but for other reasons. Abnett's portrayal of Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt is, in my opinion, only second to Sandy Mitchell's portrayal of Ciaphas Cain. Both are shown to be utterly loyal to the Imperium of Man, and yet so vastly different as to be leaders of totally different forces, and utterly different manners of leadership. Gaunt is seen as an utterly loyal man that will weather any trial and come out on top. Whereas Cain sees himself as a coward, and can never see that his 'self indulgent' nature is seen as Heroic by those around him. Both Gaunt and Cain display, in their own unique ways, their loyalty to the Emperor and the Imperium of Man.
I did take note that you properly pronounce Gulliman's name as Rho-Butte-E and not some odd pronunciations I have heard over the decades. I tend to agree that the meeting between the Lion and Robute to be significant and meaningful. And Abnett's portrayal goes far to show that both are, indeed, penultimates of Humanity's best aspects, while still maintaining that essential 'humanness' and character that makes us all Human. Both, as other authors and poets have said: An Angel with a Devil inside.
I feel that you should keep on making such videos about the Primarchs and others. I would love to see your 'take' upon both Ibram Gaunt, and Ciapas Cain. To me, Gaunt is a pleasure I can publicly take pride in reading of his exploits and those of his men. But Cain is almost a 'guilty' pleasure that I enjoy equally as much, or more.
Keep up the good work. I enjoyed this video a lot.
