I'm in this boat and may have to go that route since I have a RRA SS barrel that took a pinned FSB. I plan to use the barrel for target shooting. Doesn't look all that complicated, just take your time with whatever you have, in this case it will be a Dremel tool.
Helpful video, most likely going to try this on mine! Anyway could youmake an after video kinda showing a reinstall, and then installing the new hand guard?
Use a piece of .750 diameter stock and you can clamp the FSB in the vise by the rings. That will eliminate any distortion from clamp pressure or heat. Just let it rest and cool off. Dunking it in water will make the material brittle. I would have used a low profile gas block as cheap as they are these days. Dimple the barrel and a little high heat threadlock and the gas block is there till you want to remove it. Reinstall the pins and tag your FSB with the serial number or batch number of the barrel so if you want to reinstall later, the pins match.
Yeah gosh I would hate for the barrel and gas block to get too warm haha jk this video was certainly helpful. Going to get moving on this project myself.
if i was going to spend 30 bucks anyway i would just buy a damn gas block. instead of spending the time and money to destroy a perfectly good a2 front sight/gas block
Who said you can't get it pinned? For 20 bucks, you could get a new low profile gas block and take it to a gunsmith who can drill/pin it for you for about 5 bucks.
Mark Scofkoe this is for people who already have an A2 block and maybe people who don't want to remove it and don't want a garbage $15 pot metal clamp or screw on block.
Excellent job! Pinned gas block is the way to go. As a plus your now a gunsmith!!! Well, just a little!!

is there an issue with chopping it while it's on the barrel
Just be careful and take it slow. I would use a hack saw and files as it got crazy hot with power tools

are you able to reuse the taper pins and gas tube roll pin? or would you need to get a new set?
Would you be interested in cutting mine down? If so what would you charge?
I’d have to charge more than you could just buy a low profile gas block for.
10 bucks for a can of spray paint? Where do you shop?
Someone should offer these for sale for guys who don't have access to the tools...I'd pay $40.
Thanks for the video. I'll be doing this to my rifle.
looks great!!! I just cold blued mine
Just buy a low profile gas block! They are fairly cheap. Now if you ever wanted to put back to original it’s expensive to do so.
Very nice.
Could get by with 20 dollars worth of hand tools... pulls out 10 dollar harbor freight angle grinder.
Very informative, tks

This is a good option if it’s already pinned on your barrel. It’s a more secure mounting method.
More like @$$ block
I would just get a low profile gas block and they r cheap
Pinned blocks are arguably better
+WesMerc you have a valid point

Try 45 bucks
Kami kadze I had bought an adjustable gas block and my gun smith pinned it for a small fee of 15 bucks since I brought him the pins.
FUAROCK!
I appreciate the effort but can get a good gas block for $40 or less....rather do that
So, you ruin a $100 A2 front sight gas block to make a Low profile gas block you can buy for $15.

Mark Scofkoe also A2's are like $30
