Had the same exact reasons for getting my 2018 STI. For the price, it's hard to find the driving connection in another car. The performance, community, tunable nature and practicality sold me. Great vid as always man! Definitely got a benchmark with your car!
Bro, I literally just got my first manual, ever, 3 days ago. A 2019 wrx sti, and this video really gave me a lot of insight on this car. I can’t wait to watch more. I have A LOTTTT to learn man. I’m loving it so far. Mines was definitely a garage queen 😂 only 20k miles for it being 5 years old
@@CarsWithJR Thank you! Yea, I had always heard the whole mechanical feeling thing before, but can completely relate now after driving it for a bit; honestly felt the difference as soon as I put it in 1st for the first time and started to pull away. I did drive both before purchasing the WRX, but I was coming from an '07 Civic Si, so everything felt more "solid" and an upgrade from that. After driving the WRX for two years, I can definitely appreciate the difference now. It truly is a different driving experience. It has character. I chuckled when you mentioned passing on the "Recaro" seats in your video. Thankfully, I had learned they are not even the full seat, but just the upper, backrest part. Lame. This time around I specifically asked for a Base STi with the shortshifter and none of the other upsells. In contrast, my WRX was a fully loaded Limited. What I wanted on there already came standard now on the STi (keyless entry/push start, LED/ steering responsive headlights, leather). The only thing I miss is the Harman Kardon stereo system, but w/ Android Auto/ Apple Carplay the upgrade value just isn't there (maybe if the speaker system was packaged separately). I'll be swapping these out for a much better value later. I never used the nav and would just use Waze on phone anyway. These are just my opinions, of course. The WRX was a TON of fun at the end of the day.
The two main reasons I opted out of the sti were for the outdated high maintenance ej25 and it’s fuel mileage. I had a buddy tell me he’s squeezing 30 mpg on the highway in his wrx and how the fa20’s twin scroll setup having rpm torque I immediately thought. SOLD. Perfect for autox 😂😂
awesome video man I'm in my 3 year in my wrx I still love mine even though it not an STI I still have fun in it. keep up the good work mate love from Philadelphia PA
Honest assessment indeed. The VA series WRX and STI are not for everybody and have definite issues. The smiles/mile however are hard to beat especially when you start modifying.
yeah i agree, funny review. It's the raw feeling of driving it. They still have the manual handbrake too. Boxer rumble? shit you dont get in the modern 40k sports cars anymore. Everyone got a damn ipad in their car nowadays. I would still choose the sti over any of their competitors for the driving experience which includes the raw feeling with hydraulic steering, boxer rumble sound, visibility, looks, etc.
right? when he mentioned Subaru should partner with Porsche, I was shaking my head. I own a Subaru, my favorite brand since a kid is Porsche, but hell no. To co-develop, maybe, but to outright use a Porsche engine, like what Toyota has done, nope.
the STi sells pretty well, as long as they don't do anything stupid or too sporty/racecar like the EVO X, it should still sell well. They've added a lot of comfort stuff in the past years, to appeal to more non-enthusiasts, cuz those are dying.
I just traded in my 2019 STi with about 6k miles on it and got basically the original MSRP back out of it. Much happier with my '21 Tacoma. I always wanted an STi but waiting until I was 53 to get one was silly.
PSA: As far as warranties go, shopping around for a good dealership is just as important as shopping for a good price. Some dealers will refuse warranty work even if the car is stock, because they care more about the bottom line than a good relationship. (Remember, warranty work is not free-you may not pay for it, but a dealer will). When inquiring about a car, ask around at the dealership’s service desk. If any of the service managers have or have had WRX or STI, you’re likely in good hands. They are more likely to be sympathetic when issues arise. Ask around on Facebook or forums to see what service experience is like at a particular dealer, etc. If looking at a used WRX or STI elsewhere and not a Subaru dealership, make sure you buy an aftermarket warranty not associated with that dealership. (E.g., if you buy your STI from Chevy, don’t buy the warranty they will try to force on you.) There are plenty of other options, like Fidelity or AAA, who default to dealership recommendations on what works needs to be done, and then will then pay for that work. Make sure you establish a service relationship with a Subaru dealer before issues arise.
I like the VA interiors. They work good enough for me. I have a 16'. I REALLY wish I had the 6 pots. You have the same Cobb AP dash mount that I have. I just need it installed along with a dozen other things. And I just noticed you have Washington plates. Your winters must be rough. Keep the content coming!
Love your vids and build. Simple and clean. I actually traded in my wrx for an sti lol. I must ask why is the sti most hated car on the street. I also get random pickups reving at me. I get Kia and Camry’s right on my ass. It’s on coils and wheels only right now.
I have a 20/20 and I'm putting mileage on it about the same rate you are it's just too fun to leave at home. Everything you said about the driving physicality and so forth it's there just like I real race car not an Xbox game. Thanks for the video
@ My WRX Channel dude now i know i dont put much mileage on my Type RA. i have 15k after 2 years of ownership. Going full OEM+ with it with the JDM STI catalogue. a lot of which is on the S209. Then reliability mods and a more responsive turbo. 300whp is all I want on it.
ItsJustAlex man this is exactly what I was thinking. I have a friend that owns a type are and he is slowly importing all kinds of Japanese parts on his type R which I think is dope af
Can you please make a interior videos like different shift knobs because I’m looking to upgrade from factory and don’t know what I should buy like a heavy one or something similar to the factory one but nicer looking and other things that can make the inside more unique then then standard because I don’t really see anyone doing videos like that and it would be very interesting to see 😊
and remember, if you want crazy whp and tq, your going to neeed a built engine, iag possible, closed block forged pistons etc, and lets not forget a good oil pickup so it dont break and mess up your ringland and a oil catch can
3:00 that’s cap because the whole reason I didn’t buy one is because it felt like a boat compared to the competition and I also drove them all including the focus rs
@@CarsWithJR yah and then screwed everyone over when they stopped putting them in...not even in the final edition 🤷♂️....both great cars though your sti is real nice
I'm actually in the market for this car. I'm between a 2020, a Type R, or just waiting for the next-gen STi. I have a few reservations about the reliability of the current gen STi, the Type-R's are marked up so bad right now I'm half tempted to just go and buy an M2 every time I look at them, and the next-gens are probably 2 years out it seems. I honestly have no clue what to do.
Haha love the interior review part. I don't mind interior but yes it ain't no luxury car. Wish subaru gave us the jdm recaros.... audio definitely worst I've herd in a car. My first car 01 civic with a blown speaker sounded better.
I clicked your link for the accessport vent holder but its just a magnet clip, I think its sitting in a dock of some form? mine didnt come with that atleast. Anyone have more links to get the accessport setup like that
About your wheel setup: I'm running the same rims on my WRX but with 15mm spacers. I don't understand why mine poke out while you're running 20mm spacers and sitting flush?
Hey man . I’m in FL right now . In NFSG but I got an uncle up in WA in my home town Port orchard . He’s about to be an owner of an 8 second civic on E. Question , where do you go to gather your ethanol ? . He is willing to purchase a drum but I told him to hold off on it in case you have better advice . I wrote you through FB also .
So, the car is great, will hold it's own against a type R and golf R, except the engines blow, lift heads, blow bearing, rods, and just down right explode randomly like a bad GF. Except for those few minor problems, this car is awesome, except it costs about 10k over priced.
@@CarsWithJR for sure that is the way to go. My helmet would be touching the headliner at the track. Loved the subie but I moved on to a type r over a year ago.

I hope Subaru keeps it Japanese purist. I was disappointed with Toyota went with BMW for their motor instead of the 2JZ.
