  • Because your politicians have been indefensibly sluggish in responding to the demands that the institutions of the mentally retarded be cleaned up and eventually emptied out, the fight to provide humane and dignified care for them has been fought primarily in the media one in the federal courts. Successful lawsuits that have confirmed their human rights have been argued in 8 states, and lawsuits are pending in 11 other states. So this is a national movement. Our latest documentary was also presented in the form of a legal brief. We revisit the same mental hospital 3 years later.

Tonight I saw Geraldo on Cuomo. All the talk was about the last 25-maybe 32 years. What I want folks to pay more attention to is the early times. I'm 66 now. Geraldo came on with Good Night America when I was a teenager. When he got permission to play the Zapruder film and I saw the devastating injury to our President I was gobsmacked. Just a teenager, could not take it in at first what I had just seen. It's something easily found now, but it was a gut punch then. I'm seven years old and had seen Lee Harvey Oswald killed by Jack Ruby live on television. Then nine to twelve years later see the assassination in front of my eyes, pictures that were unimaginable. My parents were very young when JFK won the election. Dad was working 3 to 11 that week. I was one of those kids who was a born night owl so I was up and in the living room with Mom while the returns came back. I was only four but when Dad came home at midnight it was all joy."He won! He won!" Mom shouted and hugged Dad's neck. Great memory for me too. My very young parents who struggled and went through financially difficult times saw hope in a man they could believe in. Then he was murdered three years later. Geraldo had the openess to show what happened that day. It was mortifying but the country needed to see. Then came the the truth about Willowbrook. I was young and heard folks say things such as, well, he or she got too hard to handle so now they are in the home. Makes you kind of think that there are games of checkers maybe, sitting on a front porch, watching the sun go down, after they have had a nice dinner, just winding down the evening. Thankfully Geraldo dispelled that illusion by showing all of us Americans what truly is the life these folks have. It was a gut punch for me. How could people in charge let this go on and then go home to their families knowing that there are human beings lying in their own excrement, being abused by others, cold in the winter, hot in summer, and just shrug it off. "Oh well, what can you do". Geraldo exposed all of this to us. Yes, this does happen in our country, horrible as it is. Good Night America was giving us the ugly information that you surely don't want to see but you needed to know it. Thank you Mr. Rivera.

I have been watching Geraldo all of my life and in my opinion, the man has credibility and very passionate about his work. I now watch Geraldo on FOX The Five tho him and I have different political views, I hold the utmost respect for the man. Hail Geraldo \m/
