    The series has cyborg robot ninjas, vampires, and a dude who had his arm transferred onto another person posthumously that allows him to take over the person's brain, mind reading isn't that far-fetched.

    about the theory regarding psycho mantis' mind reading, I have an idea about how it could ACTUALLY work. what if Psycho mantis' brain matter has the ability to change or shift, and his neural networks can adapt faster than most other's? if this were true, and if he somehow had a way to tap into the other person's mind, maybe he could actually mimic the structure of that person's brain, his neural networks would adapt, and he would be able to have thoughts similar to the enemy, giving him the ability to essentialy read their mind.

      @cozyKyra  7 лет назад +1

      Oh, that's interesting. So rather than a "mind-reading" ability it's more like a "game-universe breaking" ability, so he can take advantage of the mechanics of the game to see what the different actors are processing, see controller input, have information unavailable to the others in the game... I like that. Works for Phantom Pain too, he just reads the actors processing and share some his game-breaking ability with them

    • @Peter_1986

      +LittleGadget
      Sure, however sometimes some people take fantasy and fiction a bit too seriously, and try to explain it and debunk it with real-life science, which is quite pointless.
      That's like trying to convince people that cats shouldn't be able to jump several times the size of their own body length just because humans cannot do that - those are two completely different types of scenarios.
      I once saw someone on the Internet criticise the eyesight of the Elves in Tolkien's "Lord Of The Rings" books, because apparently he insisted that the Elves "should have had much larger pupils" to be able to see details from several miles away.
      Well yes, _in real life_ their pupils would have needed to be much larger --- correct --- but this is Tolkien's world, where the laws of physics and biology are vastly different and follow completely different rules.
      And the beauty of fantasy is that it does _not_ work like real life, instead it presents worlds that we could only dream about, which can be a very fascinating and enriching experience in itself.

    sorry to say but mind reading (intuition/empathy) has been around forever, so technically we mind read without even realizing were doing it, now take that concept and add an ability to decipher different levels of chemicals like serotonin and dopamine though empathy/intuition, and bam you have a person who can literally read the chemicals from your brain, or read your mind, SORRY but not even mentioning the different chemicals in ones brain while talking about mind reading gets my thumbs down, for the record i went to university for psychology so if you want to update this video i can help, at the moment you should stick to the game world and forget real science

    • @cozyKyra
      @cozyKyra  7 лет назад +1

      +ThaDuDeMaN good point! I actually touched upon this in my Dark Souls and Undertale videos, minus the chemicals part. That's an interesting idea, but I'm skeptical about how much more information you can really get from a live feed of chemical levels that you couldn't just infer on your own through intuition and empathy, reading body language and facial expressions. Especially since there's evidence empathy involves an almost simulation of someone else's brain state.
      Besides, the information about someone's brain state and what you can get from watching chemical levels, which will be mostly mood and probably processing and energy consumption so you can see where people are devoting resources in their brain like an fMRI, it isn't really what people are talking about when they say mind reading. They want extraction of thoughts and ideas and memories. Which is going to be a much more complex problem of getting at the networks that encode these. Which we still don't even understand well.
      Also thanks for the offer but it's ok, I did neuro in university too :)

    Hi,
    Some remarks:
    - I do count Europe as "The West"... MSX was very popular in the Netherlands (about half a million systems sold) and several other parts of Europe also got some sales (mostly Spain and a bit of France and Belgium).
    - MSX came out in 1983, not in 1982.
    - Metal Gear was for MSX2, which came out in 1985.
    - You show a relatively obscure Talent TPC-310 at 1:18... OK... but why? :) That machine was only released in Argentina.
    - You show a Sony HB-10P at 1:46, which is an MSX and not an MSX2 and thus won't be able to run Metal Gear at all.
    That said, looking forward to your review on Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (also for MSX2).

    I played the NES version a bit when I was a teenager in the late 80's. Always concidered it to be memorable and a classic.
    From gog I downloaded the MSX2 version for really cheap on sale. I thought it is the better version except you can't do everything through just the controller. Some keyboard controls are required.
    I really like the gameplay, mechanics, and visuals better than the NES version.
    Konami was good at making games different on different platforms or choosing to make entirely different games for each platform of the same franchise. Konami had an awesome reputation back in the day. If a game was made Konami you knew you were going to be happy with it. I never regretted game purchases or rentals from Konami.

  • @capscaps04
    @capscaps04 5 лет назад +5

    Meh, I still like the mind reading thing. I honestly I don't care if it is not possible now. One phrase that was phrased by someone in the past was that "nothing is impossible, we just have to figure it out how to make it work".
    In this case, and problably in most of scyfi works, mind reading (if it become possible in the future) may not be like it is interpreted in the game.
    And also so far I know, mind reading is a thing now, so far I know there is a guy who was able to play a tomb raider game with his mind.

    • @cozyKyra
      @cozyKyra  5 лет назад

      Hm, I suppose it depends what you consider mind reading. You can use consumer-grade EEG devices to get real time brain readings and fashion brain-computer interfaces with them. I'm assuming this is what the Tomb Raider player was doing, I haven't seen that but it sounds cool! That Star-Wars Force Trainer toy is also essentially this just very cheaply. But the limitations of EEG, especially consumer-grade ones, is that it's really coarse signal and only from surface structure. So for instance you can read from your motor cortex really easily, all of that is on the surface. And you can mentalize motor movements without physically moving and see activation with EEG, which makes it the most intuitive way to train yourself and a computer to recognize certain patterns. So you can tie left-body motions to one action and right-body motions to another. Maybe you can even distinguish between upper body and lower body motions. But the difference between your index and ring finger are mapped too close together in your brain so you wont be able to distinguish that. That's about the extent you can reach with this technology. You can maybe push it a bit further with some band-pass filtering, for instance certain frequencies in certain areas might be correlated with certain functions or things, and thats cool.
      But I don't think that's really what are aiming for when they consider mind reading. We want to be able to discern actual complex thought, to read and detect intentions and whatnot, but we really aren't at that stage of even understanding how that instantiates in the brain let alone reading it in real time. And this isn't capable with the methods i described above. EEG is just too crude. It's really just bypassing your body. It might be nice if it freed up your hands to do other things, but that actually wouldn't work. Any physical movement you make completely drowns out the signal EEG's are reading since it's just so much stronger, so you would only be able to use your brain-computer interface completely still.
      That being said, this kind of bypassing is exactly what you want to do for developing controllable prosthetic. Not with EEG, again too crude, but by tapping in earlier in the nervous system directly with electrodes. Maybe implanting directly in the brain.

    I admire the MSX-2 version, but I like playing the NES version better simply because I can actually complete it, and quickly. Its exploits make it a cinch to complete in under an hour.
    The MSX-2 version is more technically polished for sure, but it's also a lot more inconvenient to the player, and intentionally so.
    The final boss is a prime example: You need 16 explosives to destroy Metal Gear, and in a specific order that you're only told in game once (better have written it down). You can't hold more than 15 explosives if you're not a four star rank. It is incredibly easy to shoot the hostages Coward Duck's boss battle. You go down a rank if you shoot a hostage. If you saved most of the prisoners already, you're screwed.
    In the NES version, there's no set order to blow up Metal Gear feet, Coward Duck's boss battle layout is such that it's much easier to shoot Coward Duck without a hostage in your crossfire, and you can glitch out of the Supercomputer room to the final boss. Poor programming saves the day.

    • @Peter_1986

      +LittleGadget
      I think that one reason why people are annoyed by the mind reading rant is because it makes you sound like you have to apply real-life science to everything around you.
      Sometimes it is actually important to allow oneself to detach from reality and just imagine supernatural and unreal stuff for a while.
      For example, do you constantly question everything that happens in books like Lord Of The Rings?
      Hopefully not, because they are not supposed to make sense from an everyday perspective, they are experiences of other worlds with other natural laws.
      We would go crazy if we never ever escaped from reality.
      That's why we always daydream, because this is out brain's natural way to "relax".

    • @cozyKyra
      @cozyKyra  8 лет назад

      Laurelindo Hmmm... is daydreaming relaxing..? I know it's supposed to fall back onto the default mode network, which is assumedly the "at rest" brain state. And so does mind wandering. But I would also think daydreaming can get pretty resource heavy if you get into it. Are daydreaming and mind wandering even defined as different things in research..? Thanks for this topic idea.
      I totally get what you're saying though, and I agree on that level. If you just go around taking fiction and trying to fit it into the real world for the sake of it, that's boring and not actually useful for anybody. And also why.
      But I think if you can take something and apply concepts in science or logic to it in a way that either generates new information/ideas, or is able to teach those concepts to other people, then that kind of application is worth doing. The act of going through and applying the concepts can be fun and creative in its own right. At that point its not that "everything needs to be explained!", but rather you can create something new or useful. Say hypothetically I wanted to talk about insanity, I could use Gollum as an illustration. You would both teach people about some research behind the concept, and maybe give some new perspective on the character. I think things like that can be enjoyable (i'm not doing that example though lol).
      I don't think i did any of that in this video though. Not by a longshot. My dreaming video is much closer to what I wanted it to be, but this video was a failure

      One thing that is definitely much better in the original MSX version is the menu controls.
      In the NES version this is a complete mess, and basically a guessing game between the Select, B and A buttons until you get used to it.
      Compare that to the MSX controls, where each submenu has its own F-key - for example, the weapon menu is both opened and closed with the F2 key, and the item menu is opened and closed with the F3 key.
      That's MUCH better.
      Granted, I am aware that the NES controller was a lot more limited, but this doesn't change the fact that the MSX controls are much more userfriendly.

    I disagree with you on the subject of mind control and here is why-
    We know that certain areas of the brain control different aspects (motor, auditory, ect...). We know that certain drugs can restrict or shut down parts of the body as well. Why couldn't it be as simple as stopping all movement by flooding the area of the brain with an overload of signals? If an opiate can stop a person from breathing by essentially slowing the brain down so much tgat it forgets to breath then why not? Forget targeting the small things like finger or thought....think legs and stop moving or flailing uncontrollably. Even better block the MU and flood their pain receptors to urge compliance. You have to think arpund the problem not through it.

    • @cozyKyra
      @cozyKyra  5 лет назад +1

      That's actually an interesting perspective, and in that regard yes mind control is easy. You can shut down a body or even targeted body parts pretty easy through anesthetics or other substances. You don't even to bother with the brain, you can anesthetize your legs and stop them from moving. The way typically anesthetics work is by binding to receptors between neurons and blocking the signal, so even if your brain sends the signal "move leg" it doesn't go past that point.
      You can even go a step further. ultimately all that matters for moving your arms or legs is that signal from your brain telling your muscles to contract, but that's pretty easy to hijack. Just attach an electrode an apply electricity. with different frequencies you can either induce or prevent movement, and there is no time delay like with drugs which is the main issue with going that route (heres a fun video that shows this in action ruclips.net/video/5QYpD428hAQ/видео.html). Your main difficulty then is refining this system to get fine motor control out of it, even the bundles of nerves going from your spine to the muscles in your legs are pretty dense, there's a lot, and with electrodes like this you're stimulating a huge amount. Some other food for thought, this is related (and maybe opposite?) to the work and research being done with prosthetic nowadays, where instead of hijacking the existing nerves in your leg to control the rest of your leg, you want to hijack those nerves to control a prosthetic leg.
      The main thing I find interesting about your response and where I disagree is you calling thoughts and fingers the small things. I think those are the biggest things (By fingers I think of being able to control a body for fine motor control like playing the flute, which like I said becomes a much more difficult problem to solve with this motor control hijacking approach). Understanding and interpreting what's going on in the brain is a hugely complicated task and thats where i'm saying I don't think its possible with our current technology.
      That being said, we actually can do some level of mind "control" at the level of the brain if you don't care about finesse and just want very broad and rough effects. Like you mentioned we know where in the brain motor control starts. We actually have it mapped out really nicely. If I can stick an electrode in your brain in the specific spot for your leg and apply voltage i can get it to move. There's still a lot out of your control further upstream, and that electrode is still stimulating millions of neurons even in the tiny area, but you can do it. If you want noninvasive, one cool technique is TMS, basically get a big electromagnet and put it near your head, run power. That electromagnet induces voltage in the region of the brain you put it over. Again really really broad activation (or inhibition depending on how you use it), but you can immobilize someone that way non invasively and with little to no lasting damage.

      That my friend was a fantastic response! Rarely do I find another person on RUclips with beyond exceptional intelligence. I want you to know that I am enjoying this conversation immensely.
      Yes, I should be more selective when I talk about motor function. Something as fine as playing a musical instrument hits just about everything one could imagine. From the sight of the instrament, the sound that hits the ear, memory or familiarity...it's staggering when you consider it.
      I agree completely, I don't think we will be seeing mind control so finely tuned that we could say give another person the ability to play the flute. Actually, I don't think it would be possible to control another's mind giving them the ability to play the flute if they don't have the brain mass to do it. Even with the technology at hand, I think at best it would be a hit or miss.
      On a lighter note...
      I know this might sound flippant or me being sarcastic but...it would literally be 404 Error- file not found. Learning to play a musical instrument with any proficiency takes years of hard work and dedication. One cannot simply sit down at the nearest piano and declare themselves the next Frédéric Chopin.
      At any rate, again enjoying myself.

      +President Obama Yeah right?? I didn't know. Even if you played the NES port, you'd still be missing the SECOND Metal Gear MSX game, Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, which is arguably even more story-important.
      That's where everything happens. The fight with Grey Fox, the thing about Big Boss's body. Campbell and McDonnell Miller are introduced... In fact I'd argue that Metal Gear Solid is an almost spiritual retelling of Metal Gear 2, as it uses a lot of the gameplay and plot elements.
      How great is that. The game that Metal Gear Solid was based on, that set up all the plot, was never brought to North America. And the NES equivalent of it, Snakes Revenge, is an entirely non-cannon game and has nothing to do with the series. Cool right?

      The MSX version is much more intuitive, it has one of the F-keys for each respective menu, and those keys both open AND close their respective menus, and any item that you had selected in that menu at that point will now be your new item.

      This is a MSX2 title, so back in the day you would be dissapointed. The MSX had better scrolling and more videoram (and I believe more ram, at least mine has it).

    He doesn't read your mind, it's a trick. Their file on you includes what games are saved on your memory card. Psyco Mantis just recalls that info from your file, as a trick, to catch you off guard and make you think he can read your mind. ("You've been playing a lot a Caslevania.")

    The MSX may be an overall better game, but the NES version music is the winner by miles.
    Forget Psycho Mantis' mind-reading powers - how does he levitate?

    good vedio,orginal version is only on MSX.konami just looking for money make nes version it is sad for most of western player playing fake version game .but any way thanks for put the both msx game on mgs3 and nes version became dark history never be able to accept in metal gear solid game series

      +李伟诚 Yeah, I guess even from the beginning Konami wasn't interested in the artistic contributions of teams or even a person (like how they kept changing developers for Silent Hill after Team Silent left), they just had enough good people making great games that it didn't show to the public. But now everybody that made Konami great has left...

      +Senya “Y2135” Fetisov well if you have played both version you will find NES have a lot of bug and compare with MSX ver even some of the boss battle been cut in nes ver just like in MG2 in NES ver when you fight with metal gear ,they just lock in a room and you just need to launch the rocket in to the room but in MSX ver the metal gear will chasing you and you need to move around and fight .

      My biggest problem with the NES version is the dumbass menu controls.
      I mean, sure, the MSX obviously has much more available buttons, so it was much easier for that console to make the menu buttons user-friendly, but I still feel that they could have handled the menus in the NES version a lot better.
      For example, they could have simply put all the items and weapons on one single screen, then had the Select button for both opening and closing that menu screen, and you could choose items and weapons by moving the cursor to them and pressing A.
      This would have made much more sense than the bullshit that they went with in the game.

    • @cozyKyra
      @cozyKyra  6 лет назад

      Honestly I'm working on a video for the "sequels" and its the same god damn thing. They don't make any attempt to try to make the controls or anything about the games more user-friendly for the NES. It's like they made the games without thinking about how people would play it.

      I personally consider the controls to be one of the most important parts for any game - poor controls can easily make a 10/10 game drop to 8/10, and possibly even less.
      One example of a game that I felt had a lot of potential, but that also had very uncomfortable controls, is "Nosferatu" for the SNES;
      that game was very similar to "Prince Of Persia", which is always a good thing, but the controls weren't nearly as polished.
      It is hard to explain, but once you start playing that game you will know exactly what I mean.
      It's kind of a shame, because apart from that, it seemed like it would be a very good game.

    • @cozyKyra
      @cozyKyra  6 лет назад

      Just tried this out and I completely agree, controls are really off! Really stiff but slippery at the same time, I'm impressed they managed that. It could have been cool though, they were so close to a great game lol.
