- In this video we show you how to paint wood paneling the RIGHT way...by first using an oil-based primer to seal in the tannins. We also used a paint sprayer to save hours and hours of painting all the cracks & crevices. We absolutely LOVE how this living room makeover turned out! Tannins are natural coloring in wood and wood stain that will bleed through any water-based/latex paint that you apply. No matter how many coats you keep putting on, the paint will not cover UNLESS you first seal it in with an oil-based primer. Although oil-based primers are very nasty/fume-y, this step is crucial to have a quality final product.

You two are a great team! Few points I have learned painting would include washing your panels with a good TPS solution and water first. Then do your caulking and repairs THEN prime. Two coats for that paneling would probably have been better since going with a white top coat. Also water based on oil based is best after oil based can cure for at least 3 days. Jut some tips for long lasting paint job. Love u guys!

The rooms looks so much bright and better! I have an a-frame with all wood interior walls that are varnished. I need to sand all that varnish before applying the oil based primer, right?

Looks great guys! What a nice cousin you are! I sanded my pine floor boards and used wood lye to bleach them a pale colour which is what the Scandinavians use.

I sprayed a house with Kilz without a carbon filtered mask (used a respirator with the particle filters). I was high as a kite for hours afterwards.

What if an oil based primer was not used first and the stain is bleeding through? Can the oil base be added after the fact and then paint over that?

Just watched this.
I heard you talking about patching some pin holes from nails, but not patching up the Knott's from the knotty pine knotts in the wood .
I know if people are looking for a smooth surface them knotts will have to be sanded first then patch because with out it you'll have alot I mean a lot of pin holes showing after painting white shows everything speaking frome experience.
I did a new bathroom and all the knotty pine knotts needed what i just talked about.
I say if you dont caulk every line where the two boards fit together you'll have open cracks so a ton of work is needed
1.I suggest sanding all knotts first for smooth finish if you dont want smooth finish then skip but it wont look as nice.
2.vacum cobwebs and any dust off walls .
3.wash walls do it dont miss this step wash afer spackling and sanding.
4. Fill spackle any holes then sand vacuum again yes again.
5.Do youre caulking last let set over night you don't want dust to stick to it if you need to sand something else.
6. Do your final look around touch up anything you missed.
7.Tape off anything you dont want paint on use good tape i use green frog tape making sure when taping to press firmly on the tape making sure you get a good seal so you dont get paint running back on to anything you dont want paint on.
I say masking taping takes a good amount of time if i say if you want it done correctly.
8.Prime use good oil based on wood dont chance it trust me do two coats especially on wood with lots of knots.
9. Paint then after painting you making sure to take off tape after paint dries dont wait because if you wait a day or two you could peel paint off walls.
10 have fun make it fun if you don't it will take even longer.😢

RUclips is reading my mind. I've been thinking about painting my wood panels but didn't know where to start. Well here it is... Thanks for the knowledge. Question if I may, would it turn out good if I were to hand brush and roller it or is the spray gun the only way to go now a days?
It would look good with rollers and brush, but it will take you a bit longer 😊
I have almost the same space and was undecided on how to change it. You guys have made it easy for me to go do it with the paint but do you think sheet rock could be another option and if so would it be cheaper for that size space? Great job!
Sheetrock would definitely be way more expensive…paint is the way to go! 😊

If you don’t want to run oil base through your spray rig, 2 coats of water base Killz 3 will block the tannins as well.
What kind of a sprayer do you use?

Thanks 😊 it is just an airless sprayer from harbor freight. We paid about $180 for it

Thanks! We used 2 gallons of primer and almost 3 gallons of paint 😳 The sprayer uses a little more paint but saves a TON of time 👍

@@SJ-fx8gu So I made a test piece of scrap paneling. I used four different brands of primer. I did not sand the paneling at all. I let it dry for two days. Then I used my fingernail to see which primer scraped off easiest. I could not scrape any of the brands off! They all bonded very tight. So when I ultimately painted the paneling in my basement, I did just use a fine sandpaper block to take the sheen off the surface just for extra adhesion. But I probably did not need to do that. I used a water based primer as well. The only change I made to oil based primer was when I had stain wood shelving to paint over. The stained wood does require an oil based stain blocker primer.
I have had a really brilliant idea, I live in a Victorian house in England and I need my wood panelled bathroom painted white and restyled. It will be great practice for you for your new English style house, I am in London, so if you turn up around 4pm I can provide afternoon tea?

FYI you can used Woodscapes latex stain by Sherwin Williams to stop tannin bleed, just used on a recent product over cedar paneling interior walls in a great room, you can also use Sherwin Williams exterior latex primer as well. Just some other options if you don’t like using oil paint.

Ok the wood pine looked very good. I am not sure why anyone would put paint over nice wood. Looks good but just white paint. The earthiness is mostly gone.

Nope just primer
I paint cars. In lacquer. Our opening shot shows the classical paint stroke error. At the bottom we see a curve form as the nozzel moves up. To do this properly you need to get yourself down low and then stand up otherwise you do this:: ) along the wall. So you need a step as well, to keep the gap the same as you get to the top. This wall is not a Porsche etc and you are using a brush or roller to even things out so the ) issue isn't so critical as it is in car paint. . I've worked with house painters and this ) motion is common. And it can cause problems but a brush helps cover a multitude of sins. With cars you must be very precise. Otherwise you get a dry speckeled texture at the top and bottom and no brush will make it right. says mr know it all

I lived in a house with beautiful wall paneling, timber kitchen, and hardwood floors. I love wood but the darkness it created was so damn depressing. Had to have lights on during the day. I found it hard to come to terms with painting the timber. After a long time of stressing about it, I painted the kitchen and the dado walls in a light color. Best thing I ever did. Should have done it years ago!!!

The “right way” is to leave the wood alone. Save the next person who doesn’t have hideous basic taste from having to strip that paint off.
