I’m in zone 3a and I have been growing lettuce, spinach, and radish indoors for many years. There is nothing better than eating a delicious fresh cut salad in mid January when it’s -50* outside. It just boosts your spirit!!! I grow cut and come lettuce, 2 pans, I cut from one and by the time I finish that tray the other one is ready and I just switch back and forth. Yummy! I actually planted 6! pans this year so I can share with my ducks, chickens, and quail. They LOVE the fresh greens! I bought one of those cheap little green houses that only hold 4 1020 trays, one per shelf. This way I can zip the plastic shut so my cat doesn’t get into them ( I cut small venting holes for good air flow) I plant in dish pans with holes drilled, and provide a little extra light with grow lights. We can have salads, tacos, fresh greens on sandwiches, wilted greens ANYTIME. Guys, it’s SOOOOO easy! You will be so happy with the results if you give it a try. I can’t recommend it enough ! There is something soooooo therapeutic about cutting fresh health greens in the off season.

This year I went crazy. We live in south Texas and can grow almost all year. I have planted 20 fruit bearing trees, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries. I have tomatoes growing under lights, several peppers, a bunch of pollinators and herbs. We converted our back yard to wood chips and raised beds. I have lettuce, carrots, bunching onions, beets, radishes, chard and celery. My herb garden is doing great too. I love gardening too and understand your joy!

I know as a person living in Australia this might not be really relevent here, but it does get coldish here in winter, and my mum used to have her her 'moveable polytunnel' . It was a old flat trayed truck used for hauling logs around in the timber mill, and dad rigged up clear plastic on the tray at the back, and mum used to leave smaller stuff in the front and wind up all the widows so as the sun could its stuff in the drive-way of a day. And on cold nights dad just drove it and just to leave in the garage. They used it OK for about 50 years or so.

Few years ago I bought a box of 100 tongue depressors (craft type) for garden labels but use masking tape on toothpicks to mark seeds. Don’t have a growing room, but bring 10 pots of my Gerber daisies in every year(supposed to be annuals), they die back over December then new shoots come up. I’ll have daisies for Valentine’s Day from just sun in windows. This is in Pennsylvania, US, which is North-East. Starting my herbs indoor bc I put in a “no till” raised garden in September using fence posts we had on hand & a lasagne layering of compost/cardboard/wood chips for herbs closer to the kitchen. Perennials & annuals

I was astounded to pull back my grow insulation covers and found some still alive! It’s much milder here Zone 9a even though we’re at 54 degrees north, NW England, so I have managed to keep some salad going even through out recent ‘cold’ spell where we had -11C at the lowest point and a prolonged cold snap. Mizuna has been great but some of my lettuces are looking worst for wear. Sprouting seeds will be very welcome. Thank you!

When I bought my current home years ago the previous owner had used blinds on a number of windows. I never cared for blinds and they had seen better days. Because I try to look for ways to recycle things I ended up using scissors to cut off the slats.
In the evenings while watching TV I would cut them into 3-4" sections complete with spikes on one end to be used as plant ID spikes in my trays as well as in the garden. Using a permanent marker keeps it nice and crisp whereas popsicle stick it soaks into the wood. I have actually reused some of these multiple years when planting the same type of veggies but my supply was finally starting to get low.
When I purchased my fixer upper retirement farm I was glad to find that they had a number of window shades that have seen better days. I'm actually going to leave the long middle sections intact for some experiments on other uses, but regardless of whether those get another usage or not, I will have a lifetime supply of garden ID stakes.

I would love a chat about your seeds! I dry packed unpeeled potatoes this year. If you want to give your canned mashed potatoes a second chance, rinse and boil them until they're fork tender, just like you would do with fresh, then mash and then finally and milk and butter, salt etc. They don't get as soft as you would think pressure canning would make them. Congratulations on your grow room!

    Awesome information -- Thank You!!!
I'm in BC too and have been testing seeds in a grow tent in the living room. Have another grow tent in the basement. I'm all about experimenting so I've been collecting seeds from everywhere (fruits and vegetables from grocery store, cooking beans and seeds, and in nature). Mostly seeds from what I've grown here but have only been here 3 years. Luckily there was lots of infrastructure and some orchard and garden areas but they hadn't been cared for -- very over grown and neglected. Work in progress homestead.
Saving seeds and getting them to grow is what I'm pursuing so we're not dependent on the seed companies :)
    Happy New Year!

I too love, love, love growing vegetables.....yay it's summer here now and I'm getting a few strawberries every few days, and my first tomatoes are almost ready to pick. This year I planted Beefsteak, Superbeef, Moneymaker, Sweet 100 red cherry toms, a yellow cherry, and 2 or 3 heirloom varieties Black Krim (a purple one), a red/yellow/green stripey one and a Roma paste....can't wait till theyre all in full swing! Bring it on! I'm also growing brassicas, and cucumbers, and spinach, capsicums, etc, etc....Great to see all you're planting, and good luck with it all. Catch you in the next vid! Dee from NZ

Yes please do a seed video. I had a ten thousand square foot organic garden along with four 4X8 above ground garden boxes, sixty-two organic dwarf and semi-dwarf fruit trees with the exception of three fig trees, various berry and grape vines as well. In Southern California we pretty much had a ten month growing season. Each of the trees had an early, a mid and a late season crop. The figs produced at least two crops sometimes three in sucession. Our family was truly blessed with the amount of delicious food we were able to grow, eat and share.
We have since moved to Central Texas where the soil, weather and growing season are completely different.

I get my seeds from High Mowing and they are fantastic. Happy you mentioned them for others. I've already started some of my seeds in doors and I sprout all the time. My favorite sprouts are radish and broccoli but honestly, they are all delish. I hope your family has a very happy and healthy New Year.

Happy New Year to you!! I think we do the micro tomatoes too. I believe they are jelly bean tomatoes. It is outrageous how many tomatoes we can get from 2 plants. So good. Nothing is as good as a home grown tomato. You shirt is great. Thank you!!

Planting seeds while it is snowing outside is pretty cool.

Hi Chelsea. Can you pls give more info on your lights for your seed trays. I’m totally copying your set up but not sure about how ‘low’ to set the lights to the trays, as the seedlings grow you have to move up the lights, I’m thinking 🤔, to stop them from getting ‘leggy’.
Love how you multi task in the kitchen like I do lol.
Your channel is calming, to the point and light hearted, very nice to watch. Not too mention so glad to find a fellow Canadian in the same zone, with your knowledge.
You’ve got a full time subscriber for life ☺️
    Stay warm
